In Wall Street Journal bestselling author Melinda Leigh’s edgy new thriller, Louisa Hancock thought she was safe…but there’s a new killer in town.

When a mysterious package lands on Louisa Hancock’s doorstep, the Philadelphia museum curator can hardly anticipate the nightmare that’s about to envelop her. The package is addressed to her father—an expert in Viking culture—and inside is a ninth-century sword, a chilling thank-you note, and photos of two dead bodies in a tableau evoking a Nordic funeral. The gruesome images match a recent crime scene. But before the police can investigate the killer’s connection to Louisa’s father, Ward Hancock vanishes.

Sports bar owner Conor Sullivan wants nothing more than to spend his life with Louisa. Devoted and protective, he refuses to leave her side after her father’s disappearance. When a troubled young boxer he’s been coaching is suspected of the murders, Conor is pulled in even deeper. Desperate, Louisa and Conor take it upon themselves to find her father, but soon another ritualistic slaying makes it clear there’s a Viking-obsessed serial killer on the loose. And he has a new target: Louisa.

Louisa Hancock is no stranger to danger; she survived a serial killer’s obsession. Now she has a bright future ahead finding the love of her life, Conor, and reconnecting with her father, Ward. But just when she thinks everything in her life is finally calming down, a killer sends a disturbing package to her father. Seems this wacko is obsessed with Nordic death rituals, something Ward is a renowned expert on.

When her father goes missing Louisa and Connor will not rest until the find him. Louisa doesn’t want to lose her father now that she finally has him back in her life. Unfortunately, involving themselves sets Louisa on the killer’s radar, putting her in danger all over again. But Louisa is not helpless, and she has Conor on her side determined to keep her safe!

When I picked up Midnight Obsession I didn’t realize this was the second story featuring Louisa and Conor. They met and fell in love in the previous book all the while a serial killer had his sights set on Louisa. I guess she barely survived, but that experience made her stronger, more proactive in her safety, learning self-defense and boxing from Conor. Previous readers may appreciate Conor and Louisa’s romance a little more, but not by much. I connected with them as a couple pretty easily.

I was on edge for Louisa afraid she’d be victimized all over again since the killer fixated on her so quickly, but it became clear she wasn’t going to make it easy for him to snatch her. I was happy she wasn’t one of those characters that frustrate because of reckless, stupid decisions.

There’s another story line with the troubled teens both Conor and Louisa work with, and it combines with the murder investigation. Also, the two detectives from the previous installment reluctantly include Conor and Louisa in their investigation, and we get some interesting revelations about them. It sounds like a lot going on, but it was pretty much a straight forward and entertaining mystery.

Good, but...

One loving and supportive family, other family will do anything for money. Even manipulate and kill. Good fast paced story. But when detailed sex scenes written into to do mystery, don't like it. Do understand the loving couple, but not to interrupt the story, just leave the details for us imagine.

Advanced Reader Copy (ARC) provided by the Author and Publisher via NetGalley in exchange for an fair and honest review.

The Midnight Series is a tightly written and connected series. Reading in order is highly recommended. We have a family, the Sullivan's, who take care of their own. The plots are wonderfully written and the romance is sweet. "Midnight Obsession" is slow to start, but be sure to clear your schedule because as it hits the half way point, you won't want to put it down.

Louisa and Conor have barely recovered from the horror of Louisa being held by a murderer. Things are returning to normal. Louisa is trying to pick up the strings of her life and not live as if she is under constant threat. Unfortunately, life is not going to be normal any time soon. Her father Walt, a Viking scholar, receives a mysterious package and is then kidnapped. The kidnapper also has his sights on Louisa to be part of his transition to Valhalla.

With a serial killer on the loose, Walt being kidnapped and Louisa in this nasty's sights, Conor is being extra vigilante. He also has problems with a kid, Jordan, he is trying to mentor. Jordan is a suspect in the murders and his brother, Shawn, has gone into hiding from a gang and the police. Conor is a caring man and is trying to protect everyone. But the gang and the killer are going to try his abilities.

Louisa Hancock is the curator of a museum in Philadelphia. A package arrives there addressed to her father who was an expert in Viking culture. Inside is a sword and pictures that match a recent crime. After her father disappears she and Connor Sullivan look for him and it seems there may be looking for a ritualistic serial killer. Good read. I would like to thank the Publisher and Net Galley for the chance to read this ARC.

Great book! Wonderful characters, a thrilling storyline, and not a dull moment at all. One of the best books I have read.

While Louisa and Conor try to get their life back on track after her abduction a serial killer has set his sites on her and her father.

Through this book of friendships and loyalty and family this is a constant theme. The Sullivan family have not only welcomed Lousia as one of their own but have also shown her what she has been missing and that family sticks together through thick and thin!

I received this ARC in exchange for an honest review.

I just love Melinda Leigh's books..

I liked Louisa and Conor in the last book and I still liked them in this one. This was very interesting inasmuch as it was about a serial killer killing people, and in his mind, sending them to Valhalla, where he also wanted to go, with a Valkyrie, of course. And the way the killer talked to Ward, Louisa’s dad, you knew he really believed he was going there AFTER he killed enough people. And he was going with Louisa, once his mind convinced him she was a mythical Shield Maiden Valkyrie. Melinda Leigh writes such looney, loopy, insane, crazy, nutty characters. Ya’ gotta love that!

Then, there was the side story about the gang, and the family that Louisa and Conor helped.
Ouch! What happened to the leader Orion was just so gruesome. It didn’t break up the gang but it sure took care of the leader. AND I’m sure you’ll all be astounded at the twist at the end.

There was nothing sexual in this book but there was one sex scene. Ms. Leigh writes good murder mysteries but she always plops one round of sex in each book, nothing that leads up to it and nothing after it. So, you only have to skim past a few pages if you don’t like sex in your books.

I’m surprised that this book has the same two main characters as the third book, Midnight Betrayal. I mean, Louisa was almost killed in book 3 and she and Conor got their HEA sooo... And speaking of surprises I see that I only reviewed Midnight Betrayal on Audible and NOT on Goodreads. Hmmm?

As to the narrator: He didn’t do as nearly as good a job as he did in Midnight Betrayal. His emotions were practically non-existent and his MALE voices were terrible, especially Conor’s voice. His WOMEN’S voices were fine. Go figure.

Dr. Louisa Hancock and Conor Sullivan find themselves entangled in another murder mystery. This time it seems that a Viking enthusiast has taken Louisa's father because he is an expert in Viking history. The kidnapper wants Ward Hancock's help so he can enter Valhalla like all Viking warriors. The kidnapper stages a Viking warrior burial by murdering a local boxer to prove his worthiness to the Valkyrie so they will take him to Valhalla. Police detectives Anthony Ianelli & Emmanuel Jackson are once again on the case. The detectives seems to be looking in the direction of some local gang kids for the murders rather than looking for the real killer. When a second murder occurs, it is Louisa & Conor that start to bring pieces of the puzzle together. But the now serial killer has decided that he needs Louisa because she is he perfect mate & she should be with him for forever. The only way to Louisa is through Conor & the serial killer sets a trap. Will Louisa & Conor find Ward? Will Conor be able to save Louisa from the serial killer? How many more people will have to die?

This is another compelling & captivating story by Melinda Leigh. I've been a fan of Melinda Leigh's writing & have read most of her books. She has a way of telling a story that keeps you sitting on the edge of you seat wanting to know what happens next. This story is the fourth book in a series & to fully appreciate the characters it helps to read the whole series. If you enjoy romance murder mysteries you will not be disappointed.

Just meh

This wasn’t a good end to the series. Too many things just didn’t add up and some parts of the story weren’t developed enough. Don’t get me started on the number of sick things happening in the story.

If you love a really great mystery, cozy or otherwise, then you should be racing to grab a copy of MIDNIGHT OBSESSION right away because it's well written, appropriately chilling and engrossing suspense that will leave you wanting more! I'm completely blown away by Ms. Leigh's writing and I've got to wonder what the research process is like when I read such a book that both creeps me out and leaves me in awe of the writer's skill.

Fresh off a case that came too close to ending her life, all Louisa Hancock wants is stop living in fear and for life to return to normal. Unfortunately for her, her wish is not going to be granted any time soon. Her boyfriend, Conor's mentees are on the run after being pressured to join a local gang and being named as the suspects in a ritualistic double murder. In the midst of this storm, a mysterious package is delivered for Louisa's father at her work location, which contains items identified as Viking in origin and linked to the murders currently under investigation. Then her father is kidnapped and the only common denominator is the murders.

How do the murders connect to the Louisa's father and the missing young men's issues with the gang? Another double murder alerts them to the fact that they have a serial killer on the loose and with the police overwhelmed with the non-stop crime spree, Louisa can't sit on the sidelines while her father is missing. Her involvement in the case only serves to put her on the killer's radar and soon Louisa is the ultimate prize in a game whose rules only a deranged mind knows.

Conor would love to shield Louisa from any and all issues, but he knows she's not the kind of woman to hide away when her expertise is needed and with her father and the boys missing, Louisa won't stop until she finds them. Conor is not one to sit on the sidelines either and their extension of a helping hand to a family in needs makes his family the target of the gang.

Vikings, gangs, murders, rituals - there is so much going on in this book and the skillful way Ms. Leigh ties all of this up is really amazing. The identity of the killer and the motive are not easily deciphered until the last page and there are no bread crumbs to provide any kind of clues but the end is an eye-opening moment where all those seemingly unconnected threads come together perfectly.

This book focuses more on suspense than romance, so an avid romance fan may not find this very enjoyable, but if you're like me and don't mind the minimal romantic elements, then you are certainly in for a really great time with this book. This is my first book in this series and I can say that I didn't have any issues for not reading it in order.

I wasn't too sure whether this could be read as a stand alone novel or whether it would be best to read the previous books in the series. I think I should have read the other books first! Anyway, it was good and enjoyable despite a slow start and the pace soon picked up. It is the first time that i have read any novels by this author and i do hope to read more. Especially the earlier books in this series.

My thanks to Netgalley and the Publishers and this is my honest review.

I'm sorry to say that I don't enjoy this series as much as the Morgan Dane series. Or even the Scarlet Falls series. I couldn't connect with the h at all and the romance was a too sappy for me . Normally, I can't wait to find out who the killer is, but I had a hard time finishing this one.

This book starts with Conor and Louisa settling into a life together. Quickly they are pulling into another police investigation, this time around a boy Conor is mentoring. Things quickly spin out of control, Louisa's father is at risk, the bar takes a huge hit, along with one of the Sullivan's. Things really don't look good for them all. It all comes to a head and Louisa is the one that figures it all out and saves the day. Once they all are safe, Conor realizes it's time to stop waiting and finally lets Louisa know how much he loves her. Nice to see this series end on a happy note!

A BRILLIANT READ!

1. Characters ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐
Dr. Louisa Hancock is an Assistant Curator and Conor's girlfriend.
Conor Sullivan co-owns Sullivan's.
Jordan Franklin is a teenager Conor is mentoring.
Ward Hancock is Louisa's father.
Detectives Jackson and Ianelli are investigating a murder case.
Vivian Banks has a collection of Celtic items.
Rowan and Asher Banks are brothers.

2. Plot ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐
The story opens with Nicole, a hooker, getting in a car. The driver goes to a secluded place; he gives her something to read, he grabs her hair and slits her throat.

Dr. Louisa Hancock is examining a Celtic iron spearhead. Her father, Ward has moved to Philadelphia to be close to his daughter, to reconnect with her. He's planning a dinner party in his new townhouse.

Conor is mentoring Jordan Franklin. He's teaching him how to box. Jordan is in an after school program called "Haven". It's a program for at-risk teens. Louisa and Ward volunteer and she tutors Jordan.

Ward receives a package at the museum and Louisa accepts it. She takes the package to his house. He opens it and finds a Viking Short Sword. There was a note enclosed with a photo album - it was a picture of two dead bodies. Ward calls the police.

Jordan shows up late for his training session with Conor. He was beat up by a gang, the Sixes. While Jordan and Conor are on their way to Sullivan's, they are jumped by the gang. Conor is able to fight off two gang members and they took off. When Officer Terry Moran shows up, Conor realizes that Jordan was gone...

Detectives Jackson and Ianelli are at the construction site. They've found two bodies; a man and woman. They found a folding knife in the man's hand. The woman's throat was slit. The man was severely beaten. The killer set fire and left the scene but the snow melted and put the fire out.

Conor and Louisa go to Ward's house but he doesn't answer. Louisa calls him and he doesn't answer. She feels something's wrong so she uses her key to open the door. Conor starts checking the house and when he gets to Ward's bedroom - there's been a struggle and Ward is missing!

Ward is with the killer; he's chained to a water pipe. The killer wants Ward's help to find out how to go to Valhalla.

Louisa is checking on Viking artifacts; especially the Short Sword and finds out that the Banks family has a collection that she'd like to see. Louisa and Conor arrive at Vivian Banks home and begin to look at artifacts. Her son, Rowan, is there because he's taking care of her. Her other son, Asher, has not been around and can't locate him.

The killer kidnaps another man and woman. He beats the man to death with Ward watching. He puts the dead man and the alive woman in the van. The bodies were found in a park - the man blugeoned to death and the woman's throat was slit.

Who is the killer? Will Conor and Louisa find Ward alive? Time is running out!

3. Writing Structure ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐
Melinda has created a story that is full of suspense with twists and turns. The story continues with Conor and Louisa living together. The Sullivan family takes Louisa in as their own and it's a new way of thinking for her. The love that the Sullivan's have for each other is wonderful. Melinda allows the reader to feel that love; that no matter what, they are in it together. The story delves into Viking folklore and how someone who is mentally unstable uses it to get what he wants. Melinda also shows how Louisa begins to trust and believe in family. Louisa begins to see that she possesses inner strength but allows Conor to protect her.

4. Ending ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐
OMG! OMG! OMG! Without giving anything away - the ending is absolutely BRILLIANT! When you find out who the killer is, it will blow your mind. The series of events that take place put you on the edge of your seat! I don't want to say anymore...just read it for yourself!

5. Overall ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐
This is book 4 of the "Midnight" series and I think this book is her best work! The characters she's created grow and develop. I love Conor, Louisa and the Sullivan family. I think it's a family I would love to have in real life. I've read the "Scarlett Falls" series and now this; I have never been disappointed. I don't know if this is the end of the series; but if it is, the story was a great finale. Thank you Melinda, for writing such a fantastic series!

A spate of murders based on Viking rituals somehow involves Louisa Hancock once again, not long after the trauma she suffered at the hands of a deranged killer a few months ago. Similar to ‘Midnight Betrayal’ in format, ‘Midnight Obsession’ delivers the same thrilling ride, with the key difference being that Louisa and Conor are an established couple here, even if their hard-won HEA in the previous book comes with more bumps along the way. That said, it’s definitely good enough as a standalone, though reading the previous installment would definitely provide a fuller picture both Louisa’s and Conor’s history.

The romance certainly isn’t quite the focus here—there is no relationship conflict or angst to get through—leaving the suspense and gang-wars to drive the narrative. Yet Melinda Leigh writes Conor and Louisa in a fashion where there’s mutual admiration and much loved-up feelings on both sides, leaving us with no doubt that their relationship is rock-solid through this ordeal. The pacing as well, is steady, without dramatic lurches from breathlessness to sluggishness, perhaps it’s a little slow at the start but it picks up as each murder and/or tragic event start piling on top on one another as the noose tightens around Louisa and Conor. But because the story’s pretty light on the romance, I had expected more gore or at least a greater immersion in the Viking rituals already laid out in the plot; instead the book doesn’t quite deliver these, yet what it does however, is reaffirm the rightness of this couple with many statements on how far they’ve come with each other, right up to the very end.

A huge part of the draw in reading mystery/crime novels is the wild goose chase we’re led on as we’re teased about the identity of the suspect. Leigh does this and more, but most importantly, I felt as though I’d had an entertaining time.

Okay, so.. I was a bit behind on "reading" so I bought the audiobook and I am not sure I got much done since I started this one. Talk about a good book. I said the last book in this series was my favorite, and it was.. until now. Midnight Obsession blew my socks off. Seriously. I laughed, I may have shed a tear or ten, and DUDE, I never figured out who was the "bad guy" was.. LOL

I was on the edge of my seat. I am still in shock believe it or not. As with the other books Melinda brings the characters to life, and the narrator was fantastic.

Conner and Louisa have had a rough go of things in the last few months, and this book, Midnight Obsession, only adds to the craziness in their lives. Connor, Louisa and her father, Ward are all going to be taxed to the end of sanity. With a surprise gift (one that was dropped off to Louisa to bring to her father) the chaos reigns down on them. The gift is not only one that will make your stomach drop, it makes you take a step back and say, "what the bloody hell is that all about". Possibly a few other things.

A Viking short sword is not only used to murder someone but sent as a gift to Ward. Before they can figure out why its been sent to him.. he goes missing. The race is on to find a killer, find her father and keep them all alive in the mean time. Whoever has her father is fileting people and leaving them to be found. A gang is trying to start an all out war on the streets and Louis is trying to keep it together.

Its one thing after another and seriously, a complete page turner. I could NOT put this one down. I had to keep going. I had to KNOW who did it... and now that I know... well.. I want more. LOL These books are like my drug of choice. I can't wait to see what Melinda comes up with next!

Pretty good but way too long

Conor, Louisa and her father Ward are the major players in this book. The characters are the continuation of the rest of the books in this series however, the book took way too long for the conclusion. There are a few surprises, and a great conclusion. Well worth the time and enjoyable to the end.

Melinda Leigh has crafted a great romantic suspense novel that will appeal to fans of Lisa Jackson, Nora Roberts and others.

The story is multi-layered, without being overly complicated or confusing.

The main storyline involves a ritual murder which recalls the warrior burials of the Vikings. When Louisa Hancock's father - an expert on Vikings - goes missing, Louisa and her boyfriend, Conor Sullivan, must race against the clock to figure out what's happening. At the same time, Conor and Louisa get wrapped up in a violent gang war, which may also tie into the Viking killer's plans.

I had not read the other books in the series but I didn't feel lost at all. The story does well as a standalone. There are references to old plot lines, but nothing is spoiled for those that want to go back and read the others.

The main mystery was pretty good - it's one of those "don't look away until the end," because it's not totally done until it's done. I like books like that, because they don't let you rest until you're done. You don't lose interest because it's all solved.

There's also a very creepy resolution- not to give anything away but it's really....twisted, blurring the line between victim and perpetrator/good and evil. It makes you think, which is good.

I enjoyed this book and look forward to revisiting some of these characters in future books. I will be picking up the others in this series.

This is book #4 in the Midnight series and continues the story of Louisa who again finds herself under a killer's radar. The action begins on the first page and continues throughout the book with many twists and turns along the way.

There has obviously been a lot of research involved in the production of this book and some of the Viking text I found to be way above my understanding but this didn't affect my enjoyment at all.

The characters continue to develop into well rounded realistic people as Louisa finds herself enveloped by the love and protection of the whole Sullivan family as her relationship with Connor progresses.

There are many adrenaline pumping events throughout the book as other people caught in the fallout. Different stories and threads all end up interwoven into an edge of your seat ending.

Another excellent book by Melinda looking forward to more from this very talented author.

I didn't realize this was part of a series (Midnight) before I started reading it. I don't think it was a problem that I didn't read the the three previous books first. Now I have three new books to read!!

At first I found the book to be a little slow, but then it picked up and I couldn't wait to get to the ending to find out the identity of the the viking obsessed killer. I had my suspicions about the killer, but I was wrong. The ending was not what I expected, especially when Louisa went to visit someone who actually encouraged the killer.

Louisa and her father are experts on all things viking related living in Philadelphia. Her father goes missing after receiving a disturbing package in the mail. The police discover bodies that are arranged in viking rituals. Throw in some gang activity and more dead bodies. Louisa is desperate to find her father along with her boyfriend Conor. The killer not only has an obsession with vikings but also Louisa.

The whole story was too convenient. The story convoluted. How many murders after one family? The reasons for the who done it were convoluted too. I listened because I was bored and it was there. I wouldn’t have paid to listen.
