সন্দেহ নেই, লেভচেঙ্কো যে সময়ের কথা বলেছেন, তখন সমাজতন্ত্রের অন্তিম দশা চলছে, একদা মহাপরাক্রমশালী সোভিয়েত ইউনিয়নের সুর্যও পাটে বসতে শুরু করেছে। দুঃশাসন, দুর্নীতি, বিশৃঙ্খলা আগাগোড়া গিলে ফেলেছে শাসকযন্ত্রকে। কেজিবিও এর বাইরে ছিল না। অনেকটা হিটলারের গেস্টাপো বাহিনীতে পরিনত হয়েছিল তারা, অন্তত পশ্চিমাদের ভাষ্যমতে।
কিন্তু তারপরও আমেরিকায় বসে লেখা লেভচেঙ্কোর এই বয়ান পড়ে মনে হয়েছে, গোটা বইটাই তিনি লিখেছেন পুজিবাদী বিশেষ ধরণের এক রঙিন চশমা পড়ে। যে চশমা চোখে দিলে, সমাজতন্ত্রের খারাপ দিকটাই কেবল দেখা যায় আর পুঁজিবাদের ভাল দিকটা। অনেক সময় রীতিমত বিরক্ত হয়ে গেছি ভদ্রলোকের অভিযোগ আর ঘ্যানঘ্যানানি পড়তে পড়তে। রোমহর্ষকও কিছু মনে হয় নাই। এক্সপেকটেশন অনেক বেশি ছিল - এইটা একটা কারণ হতে পারে। ভাবছিলাম, কেজিবির ইনসাইড ইন্টেলিজেন্স সম্পর্কে অনেক কিছু জানতে পারব। এইসব কিছুই পাই নাই। 'কেজিবির লোক' হয়া লেভচেঙ্কো যা জানাইছে, অনেক সাংবাদিক বা সংবাদ মাধ্যম তারচেয়ে অনেক বেশিই জানাইছে। ওভার অল, তেমন ভাল লাগে নাই। তবে, অনুবাদ বরাবরের মতই সুখপাঠ্য ছিল।

I have always found accounts of life in the former Soviet Union to be interesting and humbling, because they depict a life I can hardly even fathom. This book provides that perspective as well as showing how this compared to life in a developed country - in this case Japan. Finally, it discusses some of the foreign activities of the KGB at that time which keeps the book upbeat.

I would recommend this book to anyone.

বইটিতে জীবন নিয়ে আত্মকথনের পাশাপাশি লেভশেঙ্কো KGB তে তাঁর কর্মজীবনের বর্ণনা সমান্তরালভাবে তুলে ধরেছেন। এছাড়া ৫০-৬০ এর দশকে সোভিয়েট সমাজ-ব্যবস্থা এবং Cold War এর সময় স্কুল, কলেজ এবং বিশ্ববিদ্যালয়ের মতো প্রতিষ্ঠানগুলোতেও নজরদারি জোড়ালো করার জন্য KGB কিভাবে অক্টোপাসের মতো তার সমস্ত বাহু উজাড় করে দিয়েছিলো - তার বর্ণনা বিশদভাবে উঠে এসেছে এই আত্মজীবনিটিতে।

সবচেয়ে চমকপ্রদ লেগেছে কেজিবি'র এজেন্টদের ট্রেনিং ব্যবস্থা এবং MICE (Money, Ideology, Compromise, Ego) এর মতো প্যারামিটার দিয়ে টার্গেট দেশ থেকে তথ্যদাতা রিক্রুটের কৌশলগুলো জেনে!

শার্লক, ফেলুদা বা ব্যোমকেশ নয়, বরং CIA, MOSSAD আর KGB'র মতো বাস্তব গোয়েন্দা-জগৎ কিভাবে কাজ করে তা জানার জন্য এটি নিঃসন্দেহে রিকমেন্ড করার মতো একটি বই!

As a veteran who was on active duty opposing communism during most of Levchenko's career, I found this a compelling memoir from inside the enemy's camp. Everything he describes, from his personal life to his covert life, rings true to all else that I've read on the subjects. It's a miracle that he refused to "drink the koolaid" of the political machine in the Soviet Union. It's another miracle that he survived the defection. They must have been/be most anxious to see him dead. I read one review that dismissed this book as the venting of a whiner. Well, dammit, he had a lot to "whine" about! Only someone brought up in the freedom of a democratic nation could dismiss the description of the soul wrenching oppression suffered by the citizens of totalitarian societies as whining. Levchenko lived in a country where saying the wrong thing to the wrong person could get him killed. No trial, no lawyer, no appeal, no hesitation; just disappeared. Read this book! It's a history lesson. President Putin is proving that just because the Soviet's empire has crumbled doesn't mean the Bear is dead.

I didn't really care for this book. Stas Levchenko worked a mediocre job at the Institute of Fisheries and Oceanography in the USSR before he was recruited for the KGB, and he even talked about his reservations for working for the KGB as he was being recruited. If he had reservations, why did he even accept the position? Most of the book was just him complaining about how much he had hated his job and his life in the Soviet Union, and how little he saw his wife, and how much he wanted to leave his job and do something else. It was really frustrating, and I began to see him as weak, someone not cut out for the life of a KGB agent.

কেজিবি এজেন্টের জীবনকে ভেতর থেকে দেখা, মোটামুটি ইন্টারেস্টিংই লেগেছিল। তবে প্রাক্তন কেজিবি এজেন্ট হিসেবে লেভচেঙ্কো খুব সাংঘাতিক কোনো সিক্রেট কিছু তুলে ধরেছেন তা না। হয়ত সেই পর্যায়ের এজেন্ট তিনি ছিলেনই না। ডিফেক্ট করার পর আমেরিকায় বসে এই স্মৃতিকথা লেখা, বইয়ের সুরটা তাই অনেকটাই অডিয়েন্স বুঝে বাজানো বোঝা যায়। আশ্চর্য কিছু না।
