Thanks to the author for giving me a copy of this book to review!
Visions is about a girl who is different than others: she is clairvoyant.
What this means is that if an object, or person, has a deep emotion seated in it, Heather (the clairvoyant chick) will see a vision of what caused the emotion.
At least, I think that's what it means... The exact details of her power weren't really explained.
Anyway, this had a good concept. A girl moves to a new place and encounters a vision of a 10 year cold case. During this, she meets friends and a potential lover, and she fears that she might lose them if they find out her secret. But being drawn to solve the mystery, how can she keep her powers from them? It had mystery, paranormal, romance, and drama. Everything I liked in a book.
But why a 2 rating star, then?
Well, in my opinion, the concept wasn't well delivered.
Not that I'm saying the writing was horrible, because it wasn't. I mean, sure, there were a few grammatical errors and such, but nothing too bad to bother me. Plus, the speaking parts (when the characters talked) seemed pretty fluid and normal, which was great (a lot of writers make them sound too bland, or without feeling).
What I mean is that two of the main parts in this book fell flat to me. What are these parts?
Well, one was the romance. I couldn't really get into it. Well, actually, by the end, I almost hated the romance. In a way, it reminded me a lot of Twilight's romance: super hot and sexy guy meets really awkward acting chick and for no seeming reason at all, they are instantly attracted to each other and fall in love and yadda, yadda, yadda.
Funny thing, though, is that I actually liked Twilight. Because even though the attraction was instant, it was like that for a reason (or some semblance of a reason). This romance was barely even explained, it was just told to you by little snippets of "it was easy to talk to him" or "his sexy smirk that made me melt." It was just so hard for me to like Heather's love interest when his only defining characteristic was "sexy."
The other part of this book that fell flat was the mystery. Which was a big bummer, seeing as it was the main thing that drew me to read this.
I really like detective stories, and any book with fun and unexpected twists in it really makes me happy. But this book was so predictable for me. I'm not even joking when I say that I had predicted every "twist" in this story. And the big who-dun-it question was so easy that I almost cried (not really, but you know what I mean).
I don't really like reading a book when I can figure out the ending in the first few chapters. It's even worse if the majority of this book is focused on that "mystery."
So, yeah, you could say that I most likely won't be reaching for the sequel.
