a space pirate’s dream when it comes to booty, but not a good place to hide when bounty hunters come looking. Pulling up stakes means Rafe must leave his vintage trailer behind, but in the process he acquires a passenger a mouthy female who seems to think she’s calling the shots.

She’ll soon learn who’s the captain. And it isn’t Annabelle, his sassy ship.

A true red-blooded male, Rafe does his best to teach Emma her place in the universe, but her human attitude gets in the way. So why doesn’t he sell her when he gets the chance?

Damned if he knows, but despite his motto of 'The Universe Revolves Around Me', he finds himself putting his life in peril to save hers. But that doesn’t mean he’s letting her in on all his secrets. Some things a man has to carry alone, and some revelations a pirate will kill to keep.

The universe might be out to get him, but he’s not giving in without a fight.

Hello, my name is Eve Langlais and I am an International Bestselling author who loves to write hot romance, usually with werewolves, cyborgs or aliens .

I should warn you, I have a twisted imagination and a sarcastic sense of humor something I like to let loose in my writing. While well known for my shifter stories, I am also extremely partial to aliens, the kind who like to abduct humans and then drive them insane...with pleasure. Or do you like something a little darker, more serious? Then check out my cyborgs whose battle with humanity have captivated readers worldwide.

3.5 Stars. Rafe has a sassy ship named Anabelle and she isn't the only lady in his life giving him grief. No, he picked up a passenger in Earth, a curvy woman named Emma. While they are running for their lives, he's also fighting an attraction to the wench. I definitely had some laugh out loud moments and enjoyed Emma's spunky attitude and antics. Rafe is cocky as hell and it comes across in a comical way. The world the author created was interesting and different. It felt like a solid start to a great story. I was disappointed to find that it ends in a pretty big cliffy. Reading the blurb for the next installment, I'm not quite sure if I will continue despite having liked the first story well enough. After the connection between Rafe and Emma, I hate the thought of Rafe possibly being with other women. If I can get confirmation that this doesn't happen, I would definitely continue. Safety: No OW/OM/Sharing. No rape or abuse.

I don't read a lot of SciFi Romance, and I have been saying that I should remedy that. So this new series from Eve Langlais was the perfect opportunity. A trusted author and the blurb sucked me right in - winning! And this book had a bit of a Men in Black feel to me - I think it was the type of humor and the multitude of alien lifeforms.

Rafe Abaddon is the space opera version of a Romany Gypsy and a bit of a space pirate. He is an alien traveler of the galaxies, humanoid in face and form... well except for those pesky nipples. Despite having traveler's blood, Rafe is obviously running from something or someone, and without being told outright, we have an inkling of his backstory before the end of the book. He was a great hero... handsome and funny in a oversexed ridiculous way as he was quite preoccupied with his dangly bits and where to stick them. Despite being a randy pirate, Rafe was a capable hero. He was adept at flying his spaceship and evading capture, some of which could be attributed to his onboard artificial intelligence, Annabelle. Annabelle was a great addition to the story, a smartass computer that handed out snark and sarcasm at every turn.

While Rafe is on Earth stockpiling goods for the black market, he begins lusting after the curvy driver who delivers all the random goods to his rusted out trailer in the middle of the desert. Emma is an unsuspecting and disbelieving human, secretly lusting after Rafe, when she gets caught in an battle between him and alien bounty hunters. As Emma had no family and few friends, and had all the requisite female parts, she made the perfect impressed crewmember for Rafe's spaceship. Unfortunately Emma was not keen on her forced servitude and she wasn't afraid to let Rafe know it... and she certainly wasn't going to ease the way for his dangly bits. She was a bit annoying sometimes, and had the penchant to ignore Rafe's warnings and wind up in danger.

I wouldn't characterize the relationship between Rafe and Emma as a romance (yet). There is a lot of banter, attempted flirting, and arguing with one another for the majority of the book... followed by a bit of intimacy which is hopefully the start to something more. I liked the adventure of this story and the descriptions of all the other aliens. Eve Langlais imagination was definitely highlighted in this story. There is a cliffhanger that makes it clear Rafe's story will continue on throughout the Space Gypsy Chronicles. I can't wait for the next book.

The narrator, Chandra Skyye, did a great job with the performance. She was believable as both male and female characters... and those dubious gender aliens. She also knew how to deliver Annabelle's snark and Rafe's randy quips to highlight the humor in the story.

I received an advanced copy of this audiobook from Tantor Audio in exchange for an honest review. 4 stars / 3 flames. Full review posted at Bambi Unbridled.

Rafe is an intergalactic gypsy pirate, on Earth to buy coconut oil and other stuff to sell on the black market. He’s living in a trailer, getting drunk and getting naked. He likes answering the door naked when delivery woman Emma shows up. She’s hot. She’s resisting his seduction, but at least she’ll laugh at flirty innuendos about his package.

Then suddenly, Emma’s truck explodes and aliens attack. Rafe bundles her onto his spaceship and they’re off to explore the universe together. Rafe’s all about how he’s just a dishonest pirate making a dishonest living, but he’s also got some secret family-political thing going down. It’s only loosely developed in this book, so there’s undoubtedly more to come in the series. And more around the romance too, because most of the book has Emma determined not to sleep with Rafe just because he’s hot and available.

This book is the first in a series. I’ve read a few of Langlais’ space romances, although she’s more known for her shifter series. Shifter books aren’t really my thing, but I do like a bit of cyborg every now and then. Langlais’ romances are on the smuttier side, but she prefers humour and sarcasm to dark. There’s a lot of frank smutty chat in this book, but not a great deal of sexy action.

I liked Langlais’ world building. She’s going for grungy space travel, no real universal political government, and almost universal chauvinism. There are some interesting hooks with the potentially malfunctioning ship AI, and the mysterious adventure Rafe is on.

I have a problem with the chauvinist universe. It’s really prevalent in the genre, and while it’s all gravy for alpha males, it’s pretty terrible for everyone else. What isn’t sexy is that the heroine has nowhere else to go. Not only is she stuck because she doesn’t understand the culture, has no money, no legal status, she’s fair game for any male who wants to take her. The pattern with these books is that the heroine has to survive a few abduction attempts (successful or otherwise) and generally makes out ok because the hero turns out to be super-rich and powerful, Happy ending for her, not so great for everyone else. And while historical romance, and even some contemporaries can work along the same lines (everything’s better when you’re rich and powerful), I think I still prefer a more Star Trek view of the future. Just because more people have access to a better lifestyle, and can freely express themselves and feel valued at work, it doesn’t detract from the hero and heroine’s adventures. Where are all the space romances in an equal opportunity galaxy?

And I am really restraining myself here, from launching into a very passionate and largely uninformed rant about tech. I’ve already said that I liked Langlais’ world building, and I’ll stick to that. She’s going for style and humour, and it works.

Character feelings aren’t a big focus. Emma is an orphan with few friends and few ties. Rafe is generally easy-going, and not looking for anything long term. They spark off each other, there’s some chemistry and some adventure, but there are some huge red flags in this romance, and I couldn’t completely enjoy it.

While it’s admirable that Emma has great coping skills and doesn’t spend the first few weeks in space curled up sobbing, I can’t see how this is going well for her. Emma is completely reliant on Rafe. He’s taken her on as crew, and she’s tough cookie and stands up for herself. But she is powerless, and she’s completely dependent on his good nature. She finds him attractive but she doesn’t want to sleep with him. The longer they spend alone in space, in close quarters, the more she finds herself considering succumbing to him. This is boredom. Rafe called it out early: he thought Emma would eventually get bored enough that she’d sleep with him and Emma does start to feel it too. Sure, it’s funny, it’s honest, but this is a horribly unromantic reason for two people to get it on. There’s maybe an undercurrent of deeper affection. What does come up, though, is the stronger hint that eventually Rafe will get tired of asking for sex and ‘light-heartedly’ exposing himself to Emma. And at that point, he’ll run out of reasons to keep her around.

It’s possible that the deeper emotional stuff emerges as the series develops, and this book works with two characters striking sparks off each other and having adventures and encountering new and interesting stuff. I haven’t completely ruled out continuing with the series, but as a first book, this wasn’t strong enough for me to rush out and grab the next.

Pirate by Eve Langlais
Genres: Adult, Romance, Sci-fi, Suspense.
3.5 stars

Tended to drag in quite a few spots. The flow was off.

The premise was interesting. There is plenty of action/adventure. Just the right amount of adult romance.

The main characters, Emma & Rafe, are amusing.

Annabelle is the most curious spaceship I have had the pleasure to meet in a story! I can't decide if she is the ship itself or the computer that runs the ship. Or maybe both.

Filled with snark, lots of grinning, snickering and laugh out loud moments. Some of which was from Annabelle (the ship).

A fun read. I enjoyed it enough to continue with the series.

What a spectacular launch to this series! I couldn’t put it down. Between world building and plot twists I was glued to the pages and enjoyed every minute of it. This novel was action intensive yet still fun and light-hearted. Langlais balances the best of both to create a universe that I’m dying to travel in. The character intensive plot allowed me to experience the different cultures while getting to know the basis for what promises to be a fantastic series. The intricate world building was phenomenal, filled with fantastically vivid descriptions. The mystery that begins to unfold has me guessing left right and centre.

As always, Langlais’ characters are vibrant and unforgettable. The animated back and forth between them really pulled me in. I love how loud and in your face they both were at all times. His cockiness and her refusals came together to have me laughing throughout. The collision of cultures and personalities was priceless. All the while, Langlais developed these two as well rounded individuals that I truly enjoyed getting to know and couldn’t get enough of.

Not only did I thoroughly enjoy this novel while reading it, I’m also still thinking about it now and dying to know what happens next. Langlais has launched her new series with a flair only known in other galaxies.

Rafe is something else, that man is cocky as hell, “little? Lying isn’t attractive, wench. We both know I’m more than adequately endowed.” Rafe must be very proud of his ding-a-ling the man is always talking about it, “just adjusting it for comfort, wench. Males of a certain size have that problem.” I loved this book, I loved Rafe.

A slow start and a bit less humor than expected, a story that started different themes and then jumped to something else... the whole thing was a bit messy. But the ending was rather promising, and made me want to read the next book. (Cliffhanger alert)

My review and an extended sample of the audiobook are posted at Hotlistens.com.

Pirate is the first book in a new series by Eve Langlais called Space Gypsy Chronicles. She is an author that I love. I’ve read, and listened to, a ton of her works and I’m still not caught up yet. Langlais is one of my go-to authors if I need a pick-me-up and some humor in my day. I know that Eve will always make me laugh out loud and this book was no exception.

The story starts off with Emma delivering packages to a trailer out in the middle of nowhere. Her and Rafe have a bit of a history as she’s been delivering packages there a lot and for a while. She never knew exactly what she was delivering and where he was keeping it because his trailer just wasn’t that big. Hell, he didn’t even know her name because the tag on her coveralls was Stan. “And she most definitely didn’t look like a Stan.” So he called her “wench”, since he refused to call her “Stan”. Well, after a little bit of banter between the two, bounty hunters attack. Rafe forces her onto his spaceship and whisks her off Earth for her own safety.

We then go on to learn much more about this vast world that Langlais has created, complete with other worlds and an array of different types of aliens. It takes a while for Emma to come to terms with, not only aliens and the that people live on other worlds, but also in how to interact with these aliens. Needless to say, these aliens might be better at technology, but they are really behind when it comes to feminism. Women are not equal and many are slaves.

This wouldn’t be an Eve Langlais book without her trademark humor. She brought that out in a unique way in this story. Rafe’s spaceship is called Annabelle. Annabelle has come complete with artificial intelligence that helps him run the entire ship without any other crew. However, Annabelle has a bit of a defect, she talks back and that shouldn’t be happening.

“Annabelle is the artificial intelligence running my computer who thinks she’s a smartass.”
The melodic female voice held not a hint of humor as it replied, “I don’t know what you are speaking of, Captain. While I am programmed for intelligence, I have no physical form, either in the buttock version or of the Earth donkey variety.”
“You’re doing this on purpose to vex me, Annabelle.”
“I am incapable of such an act, Captain.”

“You’re a pig.”
“No, wench, I am a randy pirate. You must be referring to the Piorcuma species. They are true swine.”
“I really think you should talk to your doctor about prescribing new meds. I don’t think the ones you’re taking are strong enough.”

Narration
Once again Chandra Skyye did a good job with the narration of this book. She has been narrating quite a few books for Eve Langlais and she has really grown on me as a narrator. I really enjoyed her portrayal of this story. She does a good job with male and female voices. She also does a good job with the snark that comes in an Eve Langlais book.

**I like to thank the publisher for providing me with a copy of this audiobook in exchange for an honest review.

A science fiction story about Rafe, an alien gypsy space pirate and Emma, the human delivery girl that ends up becoming his shipmate after getting caught in the crossfire between him and the bounty hunters after him.

The two embark on an adventure that opens up Emma's worldview exponentially and gives Rafe someone to boss about in his spaceship, apart from his impertinent AI Annabelle.

Light and fluffy, this first book introduces us to the main characters and their world, but doesn't delve too deeply either on Rafe's mysterious past or the relationship between him and Emma.

The series continues with Sinner next where their adventures continue.

Pirate is the beginning of a new series by Eve Langlais and while this isn’t a horrible, awful cliffhanger, this series does follow the same couple so things are not anywhere near resolved. I loved the world building, loved that we jumped straight into the action and there were no unnecessary characters on Earth introduced. I enjoyed the banter between Emma and Rafe and I look forward to seeing where this story is going to go in the next installment.

So I wasn't really sure what I would think about an alien romance, at least he looks human and isn't a different color. :) He is just from a different planet and a space pirate.

So Rafe thinks Earth is a space pirates dream because of all the goodies he can get and sell off in space. He orders things and they are delivered by the sexy and cute Emma whom he loves to tease and she has no idea he is an alien, until some ruffians come after him and they have to make a getaway in his ship.

Emma can't believe she is in a space ship, and there are aliens and people chasing them. It's all a lot to take in, especially being all alone up in space with one sexy space pirate.

Of course, it wouldn't be a Langlais book without some sort of mystery that will go from one book to the next probably. Rafe has a lot of secrets and they might be catching up to him. Emma is in for one heck of a ride.

Like all of Eve Langlais's books it is full of laugh out loud moments and a bit of suspense surrounding the ending which makes you want to dive right into Sinner to see what is going to happen.

Not my favorite series of hers but it was fun and low key and I really needed that as I have been having some reading duds lately. :)

Listened to audio narrated by Chandra Skyye. Rafe is a pirate, who comes across as an 'I only have sex on the brain' kind of guy, who constantly makes sexual innuendos and overtures. The story starts out with Emma making a deliver to Rafe and ends with aliens attacking them and Rafe fleeing Earth with Emma in tow. These two have a relationship based on a lot of sexual suggestions but no action but once they're aboard the ship it ramps up. For me the ramp up was not good, he relentlessly pursues Emma for sex, not for a relationship but to relieve his needs. No matter how many times Emma turns him down, he keeps pursuing her, masturbating when she knows she'll come into the room. It soured the read for me, Rafe never changes his ways.

There is some fun and snark with his jealous ship AI named Annabelle, and when Emma isn't playing dumb damsel, I liked that she would stand up for herself. This was just and okay read and I'm hoping the next book in the series will be better.

Only the start to the story and tried to have a cliffhanger epilogue that was just confusing.
The characters were cute and the story/description of the space and space port interesting but the story isn't fully complete. This the beginning and the connection of the two main characters. This is not erotic as it mainly is their sex banter and no real happening until the very end. It was fun up to the end when it ended. Yep, that is my main issue. They get together and the story that is being built up about who he is and why everyone wants him, or her, is just touched on.

It was an argument for me whether to bump it up or down for the incompleteness but since I liked the characters, I bumped it up. Silly but fun banter.

Sexy space pirate who was hiding and replenishing his cargo on Earth ends up back in space running from everyone trying to capture him for the bounty on him. In addition to his cargo he has an unexpected human woman with a quick tongue that keeps thwarting his numerous advances.

Honestly I giggled and laughed so much at these two characters it was great. Awesome story world build up and charcter development, kudos to the author. Not a super long story but not super short a sweet in between that gives you enough to enjoy and look forward to more.

The usual quick witted dialog from Eve Langlais. My only disappointment; this book is a story in 4 parts. That's enough for me to knock a star off the review. Give me a complete story in each book of a series, or give me a warning!

Rafe is a Space Pirate currently residing on Earth to purchase goods that are cheap on earth but fetch a hefty price in other galaxies. He's even got a cute delivery girl to ogle and constantly tries to get in her panties. She's not buying his charm although he's just cute and hilarious. Emma is sassy and such a smart mouth! I really enjoyed her. She thinks he's crazy when he throws out stuff about space and his ship. That is until he gets attacked and brings her along with him because he cant just leave her to die. So...he saves her and she's happy but not too happy to be stuck. She doesnt succumb to his advances until well into the book towards the end.

Although its described as Sci-fi meets Urban Fantasy, I didnt feel that way when I read it. I read UF a lot and this was more on the Sci-fi romance side. This had a lot of mixed reviews. I think because it ended on a huge cliffhanger and its not a typical EL ending. They end on HEA. It was easy to get into but middle way in it slowed down for me. Then picked back up. This is a continuing story/series so I believe the other books she comes out with will have cliffhangers. I dont know if I like this well enough to read the others though. Thats kinda feels weird to say because I am a huge fan of hers.

Heee! A new space-faring romance from Eve Langlais. *high fives self enthusiastically*

So. Rafe is your average space pirate looking for his next score. Ha. Yeah, right. He's more like a perpetually horny frat boy who looks to be hiding a secret or two under his nipple-less skin. Sure, he's convinced that the only good woman can be found on her back, but he soon learns that earth girls aren't made to take things lying down. No, wait. Some things are better when lying down. AMIRITE?!?!

I know! I make myself laugh, too.

Anyway. Rafe and Emma. He's never met a woman who intrigues him like she does. She's determined to milk her outer space adventure for all its worth. Even when it lands her in hot water.

There's danger brewing in the stars for these two. Just you wait!

I loved some bits, but I also took a lot longer to read this than I should have because I kept putting it down. I wouldn't say it was 'boring' but sometimes I was pretty bored and I think the majority of that was because it was kiiiiinda like reading an Alien Abduction book, but this species isn't purple and they call themselves pirates and there's some secrets that need to come out. The shards and stuff were cool it made me super excited to find out more, but I didn't expect it to not really have an ending, because I'm so used to books being one couple per book, and I'm pretty sure this will all be revolving around him throughout the four books. Is that bad? No, I just didn't expect it. Will I read the next book? Maybe, I'm not one to spend over $6 on a kindle book because I'd rather buy a paperback but we shall see.

I hadn't had any expectations when I started this book. I hadn't even read the blurb when I dove into the book, solely on the authour. I'll also be honest to state that the book felt familiar to another by same authour, with really very little difference, except the endings

All that being said, I still really enjoyed the book. Know going into it, each story is individual and complete, but this is a serial. So we get this whole story, but at the end, you know it is going to continue as the overall story is not yet complete, but this part of it is

That being said, I will be along for the ride, as I did enjoy the story completely!

Pirate by Eve Langlais

First in the Space Gypsy Chronicles series.
A space pirate adventure. A feisty Earth female. A horny pirate who is also a gentleman. Romance!
Rafe certainly tries to get Emma to accommodate his sexual urges but respects her saying no. Unlike more recent books by the author, the sex scenes were limited to the last quarter of the book.

An adventure on a space station and an overall arc alluding to Rafe being more important. It was fun except the last few paragraphs actually makes it a cliff hanger to the next book.

So, this started out promising, but became so mired in chauvinism and stupid decisions that I was disappointed. The heroine is a delivery truck person who has a route that leads her to a house in the middle of nowhere in which a sexy man lives. He always comes on to her and they have been flirting with each other for a while now. Then one day while she's making a delivery they are attacked by aliens. And this is where things turned south for me. It turns out the customer is an alien as well, and he's been stocking up on black market items that are in demand because Earth is a banned planet. That part is fine, but the heroine is singularly stupid at this point, and the sexist comments the hero had been making in a rather joking manner turn out to be normal for him. The entire universe off Earth treats women (at least humanoid women) as chattel--something I found really disappointing and trite. So, the heroine has attitude, but doesn't use the brains that she otherwise might have. The hero is pretty one-dimensional. There are hints of more, but his expectations are limited despite his breadth of experience.

I listened to the audiobook, which might have increased my disappointment. The narrator created an accent for the hero that I found annoying and what was supposed to be a sexy drawl came out as nasal, juvenile leering. She also lacked the affect and liveliness the story demanded, and there were pauses that were either too long on her end or reflected limited editing of the soundtrack. I found that she dragged out what should have been snappy dialog and frantic action scenes, and I listened at 1.5x speed.

While I knew this was a series, I hadn't realized that it is about the pirate's search for pieces of a certain artifact. The book ends just after the first part of the journey concludes. I have the next book as an ebook, but likely won't be in a hurry to read it. And when I do, I plan to avoid the audio.

Rafe is a Pirate Gypsy romping through the universe making his own way while running from something going on with his own people, And in this book we get little hints of why he avoids his own family but, won't yet find out what he is trying to avoid. He has a Ship with an on board AI, Annabelle that has a personality quirk that I hope develops more throughout the series.
Emma whom gets unwittingly caught up with Rafe has a fairly strong sense of self and does not let herself get pushed around .....much. Although some situations arise that don't allow much choice. I like how she does not fall apart except for maybe one tiny moment of loss, understandable when dealing with the loss of everything you know. But, soon enough pulls it together and onward and upward quite literally. I love that about Eve Langlais' female characters, no shirking violets here!

I did dislike the abrupt end of the book but, luckily I had bought Sinner when getting Pirate and will immediately start reading in hopes we don't keep doing the abrupt endings of the book. Promising series that is entertaining and definitely intriguing! 3.5

Okay, yes it was a mostly fun book to listen to, and I've learned about myself that I want more romances set in space. But I can't bump this book up to three stars when the main characters (and side characters apart from Annabelle the ship) are completely unlikable and frustratingly idiotic. Hey, I can have some standards with my smut and I expect at least my main characters to make me side with them. Every word that came out of Emma's mouth made me dislike her more, mainly because she's really whiny and combative without thinking. Would you want to save someone who's idea of escaping a sealed room is to bang on the door and demand to be let out, and then demand that the other character comes up with all the plans? And Rafe has no charm whatsoever, everything he says and does is misogynistic and childish. I hope Annabelle (the ship AI) ejects them both into space.
