Jody Hedlund is the best-selling author of over fifty books and is the winner of numerous awards. She writes sweet historical romances with plenty of sizzle. Find out more at jodyhedlund.com.
Jody lives in central Michigan with her husband, five busy children, and five spoiled cats. When she’s not penning another of her page-turning stories, she loves to spend her time reading, especially when it also involves consuming coffee and chocolate.
Every time I hold a new Jody Hedlund novel in my hands, my reader heart is just alive with anticipation, and I admit, a bit of trepidation – how, oh how could this new story possibly be as good as the one before? And every time even my tiniest worry is unfounded. Newton and Polly is an utterly absorbing story that captivated me with superb historical setting and details, as well as a love that came to life. The plot flows effortlessly, the characters endear themselves so quickly, and the emotions of the romance are poignant and realistic. Jody just knows how to pen an engaging, entertaining story.
My favorite reading experience, particularly with historical fiction, is one that keeps me engrossed in the story, while also making me feel like I’m learning new information. I loved all of the details about the smuggling activities – especially those who opposed it – as well as John’s time spent on ships. The details about sailing and what it took to for such large vessels to travel were fascinating to experience through John’s story.
John’s character transformation is one of the best of any character that I’ve read this year. In the beginning, readers only see his potential and feel the same disappointment as Polly at the decisions that he makes. Polly’s reeling emotions are keenly felt, as is the shock at the turn of events in John’s life – events that came about through no one’s fault but his own. Though doubt and despair soon take over John’s life, the story is never without hope. Polly’s character – much like I imagine how she was for John in real life – is the beacon that carries hope throughout the story. Their romance is heartfelt, but never overpowers the plot or character arcs. John comes to realize that no woman’s love can keep his despair at bay, nor provide the answers that he denies that he needs for so long. In a compelling journey of grace and mercy, John’s perspective soon changes from self-seeking to seeking God – Polly being the one who planted the seeds of God’s love and mercy in John's heart before that journey ever began.
One thing I have come to adore about Jody’s writing is how she highlights women of history who may otherwise be overlooked or overshadowed by the famous men they loved. In this story, Polly Catlett’s life as a young woman is brought into focus, and although it’s fiction, Jody is respectful of the true events in history. Few liberties were taken with these details, and I appreciate Jody’s effort to stay accurate to what is known about Polly Catlett and John Newton. She also stays true to the unsavory details of the time, of which there were many, and I’m so glad that she chooses not to change or sugarcoat anything for the sake of making things more comfortable or easy for her characters. Jody creates a plausible, realistic story for them, keeping many important details of the beginning of their relationship for authenticity. Through Jody’s story, I can entirely see how the travails of his life before he found God to provide the impetus for penning a song with as much power and emotion as “Amazing Grace.”
Fans of Jody will no doubt be captivated with Newton and Polly, and readers new to her books will find a gem of a story. Highly recommended for readers of historical, romantic, sweeping stories.

Jody Hedlund introduces readers to the story of John Newton and Polly Catlett, two young people who immediately fall in love but face many challenges along the way. While Polly and her family are devoted to the Christian faith, Newton has never found much patience or time for any religious beliefs whatsoever. After all, how could a selfish young man who gives his life to the economy of the slave trade be a man of faith that would eventually write one of the most popular hymns? This is the exact question that Hedlund sprouts her story from and does so in a beautifully written tale.
This beautifully written and moving story of hope concentrates on 8 years (1742-1750), which are the crucial years of Polly and John conveying their purpose in life and what it takes to get there.
John Newton, English Anglican clergyman, is a rebellious young man and Polly (Mary Catlett) is a pious young lady. They have only one thing in common - love. As life leads them to reach a deeper level of understanding each other and with their growing love for each other with each day, this leads him to write “Amazing Grace” – a beloved hymn in the world.
The story opens with Polly enjoying the tradition of wassailing with her a bit rebellious aunt and her group. They go door-to-door singing and offering ale drink from the wassail bowl in exchange for gifts. Polly’s voice warms the hearts of villagers and one visitor, a sailor by the name of John Newton.
As fate connects them again, a relationship develops, which is set against historic backdrop of English smuggling issue. “Without the cost of the import duties, the smuggled tea, coffee, tobacco, spirits, and silks were more affordable.” As weeks pass, Polly’s favorite part of the day becomes composing with John.
Soon after, John sets sail, and Poly, heads to boarding school to get an education she longed for. His life of degradation on sailing boats continues until a stormy night, which opens his eyes and changes his life forever.
This aw-inspiring story, vividly written with interesting characters, takes readers on a wonderful journey. And one of the most memorable for me.
“Amazing Grace” – “the most beloved hymn in the world, as well as the most recorded and most sung. It has been sung for over 240 years across all continents and all cultures by billions of people.”
My heart is so full right now. So full, in fact, some of it is spilling out of my eyes in the form of tears even as I sit here and try to figure out how I can possibly write a review worthy of the beauty of Newton & Polly. The truth is, I simply won’t be able to do it justice.
Hedlund has a gift for bringing history to life on the pages of a novel, and in my opinion Newton & Polly is the best example yet. This is a story to savor, to linger over, to fully absorb. Yet, at the same time I found myself unable to put it down unless out of dire necessity and then only briefly. John Newton and Polly Catlett both leaped off the page at me right from the beginning, and I experienced the story through their eyes and emotions. I winced when Newton was beaten (the first time… the tenth time), and I felt my heart pitter-patter along with Polly’s as she fell in love. I laughed with them. I cried with them – and for them. And I must confess to “yay”-ing with a big grin over one kiss in particular.
Bottom Line: Rich with history and romance, even richer with grace, Newton & Polly is not to be missed! You will laugh and smile and swoon, to be sure, but you will also find your throat thick with tears more than once – sometimes at the tragedies that sin bestows, other times at the exquisite beauty of such amazing grace. One thing I know for sure: You will never again sing Newton’s most familiar hymn without feeling a surge of thankfulness for God’s redemption of an undeserving wretch and for the way He used Polly Catlett to introduce Newton to the sweet sound of grace.

As a book lover with a "to-read" pile that will likely outlast my time on earth, I seldom re-read books due to an overwhelming desire to conquer my tbr. However, Jody Hedlund has given Newton & Polly that little something extra that earns it a spot on my permanent bookshelf. Captivating and memorable; it has enough details to satiate history buffs, a sweet romance, and an outstanding story of God's pursuit of one sinner which would be unbelievable if it weren't rooted in reality.
John Newton's life exemplifies that of the prodigal son (Luke 15:11-32). In reflection, I can see how Hedlund instilled in me a fondness for John even while he was making small, seemingly insignificant, poor choices. I found some of his actions endearing because his heart for Polly was overriding his sense of reason. Nevertheless, as his sins became more egregious my affinity for him waned and his suitability for Polly came into question. I could feel Hedlund building towards a monumental event. At the climax of the story I was both relieved and elated — completely invested in the tale.
With Newton & Polly, Jody Hedlund secures a place on my Best of 2016 reading list as well as a Christian Shelf-Esteem book club endorsement. #ReadGoodBooks #ShelfEsteem

What a beautiful story of true love, patience and character change.
In typical fashion, I didn't read the book summary and had no knowledge of John Newton's story prior to beginning the novel. I was rather shocked by John's behavior at points in the novel. Fortunately, beneath all that rough and tumble and poor decision making was a man in love with one woman and willing to do anything to win her favor. Even more importantly is that John ultimately gave himself over to God (surely this is no spoiler folks - the man wrote Amazing Grace).
The best part of the novel was the final 25-30 pages. Simply delightful conclusion.
As always, I enjoyed Jody's author notes at the end. She is so good at sharing what in her novels are factual and what is fabricated.
I am fully loving her "historical" novels and hope she will continue writing them. While Newton and Polly has not surpassed my favorite Hedlund novel, Luther and Katharina, it is my second favorite. It's a beautiful novel full of lessons and history to be learned. I highly recommend it for fans of historical fiction.
A sweeping tale rife with adventure, love, and God’s relentless pursuit of his own. With her signature depth and detail, Hedlund plunges her readers into a fascinating and powerful story that has gone untold—until now. Set sail with Newton and Polly and become anchored in amazing grace.
Previous to reading this book I was only vaguely familiar with the story of John Newton, gleaned from the movie Amazing Grace in which he is a minor character. It made me more fully appreciate the powerful simplicity of the hymn, so I was thrilled when I learned that one of my favorite authors was writing a book about the love of his life and her role in his transformation.
I thoroughly enjoyed their early romance, but had an underlying feeling of trepidation, knowing that John would be somehow reduced to the most humbling of circumstances. The characters and setting are depicted so vividly that I was instantly drawn to Polly's devout sweetness and John as the charming rogue. There is a stark contrast in how they interact with their family members that foreshadows their future paths. Polly is respectful and compliant, while John kicks against the opportunities that his father lines up for him. There are harsh realities of life to be dealt with and accepted, and the more John fights against them the more trouble he gets himself into, but always finds someone else to blame. I admired that Polly stalwartly continues with her life even though she longs for the chance to receive more education and wonders what God has in store for her.
The times are turbulent with dangerous smugglers threatening the townspeople who don't look the other way, press gangs abducting men to serve in the navy to fight the war with France, and abolitionists pursuing the unpopular cause of freedom for slaves. Suspense is woven throughout the story as John and Polly's relationship strengthens each time their paths briefly cross, just to be pulled apart as John faces the serious consequences to his reckless decisions. His flaws and dark experiences are realistically portrayed, as well as his yearnings for a better life with Polly and struggles with accepting the God his beloved mother was devoted to.
Along with the powerful themes of forgiveness and grace, I loved that Polly's father exhibited unwavering integrity in his career and taught his children by example. He reminded me of my own father with his gentle and loving manner. Despite their difficulties with each other, John's father proved to his son his unconditional love over time and his relationship with John could be seen as a metaphor for the attributes of justice and mercy of God. John's transformation brings a sense of light and hope to the remainder of the story as it becomes Polly's turn to make a momentous decision that will affect her and John's futures. Highly recommend!!!
(Thank you to Waterbrook Multnomah and the author for a copy of the book in exchange for my honest review)
History came to life for me in this deeply moving novel based on the story of John Newton and his true love, Polly Catlett! It was hard to watch as John made so many decisions that caused emotional pain to himself, to Polly, and even to his father. However, at the end of the book, it was clear to see how God was working through this man’s life to turn him into someone who would honor both God and Polly.
Newton and Polly’s romance was magnetic and captivating! I could definitely understand why John was so hesitant to leave Polly for voyages that would take years to return from. It was also interesting to see how both of them had to grow, not only in how they loved each other, but also in understanding about who God is and what grace he provides for us.
Newton and Polly was such a joy to read and I highly recommend it.
I received a complimentary copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.
Hedlund did a brilliant job of showing just how messed up both Polly and Newton were before they each came to a true saving faith in Jesus. No one can argue that. Learning that Newton's own autobiography created the framework for the story (including almost all of the characters) really showed the impact that God can have on a life. It's interesting, I'd never considered Newton as being a classic "prodigal" in any particular way until I got to one part and went, "Whoa..." Sure enough, just a bit later, Hedlund showed it clearly as well. I was glad to see that Polly realized that feelings aren't enough to commit to, and I loved seeing that Newton could finally be mature enough to give up what he wanted most if it was best for her. Beautiful. Honestly, the last half chapter and epilogue were what made it fall just the slightest bit flat there at the end. After a book full of rich conversation, realistic interactions, and beautifully flawed people coming to understand the Lord... we got typical effusive protestations of undying love (the ones in the rest of the book I believed to be heartfelt but this...) and then a couple of monologues by each to wrap it up faster or something. I had been bothered by how fast the story wrapped up, but considering what happened in those years, I appreciate that Hedlund left it out. We can get a feel for how bad it was without having to read all that. Thank you.
I recently read a book of Newton's writings and picked this up since I only knew the basics about his story. In the author's note at the end, she indicated that nearly everything except for the love triangle was true in this book. Why unnecessarily add a love triangle? Who knows! So I can't judge the book based on the story, if the story is true. But this was pretty sappy, the romance was almost entirely physical attraction, which was disappointing, and the writing was pretty simplistic. The story of John's conversion was the redeeming factor in this book, along with the research and Polly's recognition for her own need of grace. I definitely enjoyed reading Newton's own writing more than a fictional book about him. But I can also see how readers who like Hallmark movies would like this book too.
I loved listening to Newton and Polly! The narrator did an excellent job with the voices, and I was totally captivated by the story. Jody Hedlund obviously did excellent research that added depth and John and Polly Newton's story. Knowing they were real people made it even more fascinating. I highly recommend it to all those who enjoy well-written historical fiction.
I really enjoyed learning more about John Newton through this novel. Jody Hedlund does a wonderful job of turning history into a romantic novel. However, given that the hero and heroine spend much of the novel apart, I would consider it more of an historical novel than a traditional romance. That doesn't lessen the rating one bit. I thoroughly enjoyed the story.
Be sure to read the author's note at the end of the book to learn what was fact and what was fiction and more.
Wow, y'all! Just… WOW! I love this book! Powerful history and masterful storytelling going on here! Jody Hedlund is one of my all-time favorite authors and she absolutely ROCKS historical fiction!
Young John Newton is impulsive, immature, and often frustrated with his father. Polly Catlett is a beautiful, talented, and devout young lady and John is instantly twitter patted. While Polly enjoys the easy comradery that she shares with John, she is concerned by his rowdy lifestyle and lack of faith.
John’s poor choices eventually land him in the wrong place at the wrong time, but it’s his bitterness, anger, and bad behavior that really send his life spiraling out of control.
I can't wait to see which hero of the faith Jody Hedlund will bring to life next!
I requested the opportunity to read and review this book through Blogging for Books. The opinions expressed are my own.
I loved this book!! This story about John Newton - the author of the world's most famous hymn, Amazing Grace - and the woman he loved, was very well written and captured my attention from the moment I first started reading it.
John Newton was not a boy/man that most fathers would want their daughter to fall in love with and marry. But he had a very charming personality that could woo just about anyone. When he meets Polly, he falls instantly in love with this beautiful, devout girl. But John has given up on God and doesn't think He really cares for him or what happens to him. And John is still young and very impulsive. So even though Polly also feels this intense connection to him, John has a long way to go in order to win her heart and her father's approval.
Although Polly tries to be as devout as others think she is, she struggles with the same humanness we all do. She's tempted by the intense attraction she feels to John. She struggles with envy towards the more affluent trappings that her friends have. And although she loves and admires her father, she struggles with the honesty & integrity with which he does his job, which is what keeps their family from the bribes that make her friends families more wealthy. She struggles in feeling that her prayers are going nowhere and and worries that she feels no closeness to God.
As I read this book, I was drawn into John and Polly's world. I shook my head every time John made an irresponsible decision and groaned when he continued his sinful ways and suffered the consequences of his actions. I felt the pull of love between John and Polly every time they met and cringed when it looked like all was lost. Tears came to my eyes at the poignancy of the moment when John comes through the storm and re-evaluates his life. And I read with bated breath towards the end to see if Polly would choose an uncertain but love filled future with John or a more affluent life with Billy.
What a journey! With themes of love, redemption, forgiveness and the mercies of God, you'll be blown away with the depth of feeling in this book and how much more you can appreciate where John Newton's song, Amazing Grace, came from!
*Thanks to Blogging For Books for a copy of this book. I was not paid or required to write a positive review and all opinions stated are my own.*
John Newton has an amazing story. I am so glad I read this book. Jody Hedlund did a wonderful job portraying Newton's life. The romance is so sweet. I was cheering when John kissed Polly in front of her family. There is a good bit of violence. The history is fascinating and sad but it has a great ending. I loved it.
Engaging and compelling, this was a challenging tale of God's grace. Non-believers might find this book a little preachy. I, on the other hand, felt encouraged by it. For any of my safety gang friends who might be interested in this book, it's important to note that this was not a safe story.
Overall, my wish that the h had ended up with somebody more faithful and true just goes to show how unsuitable I am to be a divine being in charge of doling out grace. I need to work that out for sure. As far as the writing goes, Hedlund's style is easy to read but some of the language was a bit modern. The details of the story do seem researched thoroughly, but sometimes the dialogue or inner monologue would jar me out of the time period. All in all, this was a minor quibble. Being a character and message driven story, I'd give this a solid three stars.
I see some of my favorite reviewers gave this book 5 stars, but this book didn’t do it for me. I felt this story dragged on and I became quite bored half way thru. Unfortunately it never picked up for me. I also didn’t like John Newton the main protagonist. He was very selfish and he only changed at the ending. I gave this book 3 stars. I love Jody Hedlund but this wasn’t one of my favorites!!😢
How do you begin to review a book that actually created a very good romance?!
I will begin by saying that Newton and Polly: A Novel of Amazing Grace is the best Christian romantic story I had ever read. I think the other books I read on this genre do not compare to this masterpiece. This book is not only about romance made in a very clean way , captivating, deep and loyal but also is about family and the wisdom in listening of your parents.
My favorite character had to be Polly's father because he was an honest man that put God's commandments first in his life and that is way God gifted him with wisdom in how to lead and protect his family.
The story follows the love story of John Newton, the author of Amazing Grace, and his beloved Polly that will be his future wife and a very suited help for God's plan.
John starts as a very lost boy that hides behind his mask of jokes but after meeting Polly his all heart is captivated by this girl in a way that will make impulsive things just to see her. The book is a masterpiece not because he does impulsive things for his love because the main issue here is that he fell to the modern slogans "do what your heart wants" when the Bible advise us to do the opposite because the heart is misleading and that is how John goes on the path of destruction.
Lucky for him God holds him in His strong hand and doesn't let go despite John being against believing God.
Polly is in the other extreme...she tries every spiritual thing from praying to suppress her bad thoughts in order to gain God's love but the reality hits her when her mother says to her that we cannot deserve His Amazing Grace no matter how hard we try. His Grace is a gift that was giving to us in the sacrifice of our Lord Jesus.
The chemistry between them was so amazing, not only I laughed at their witty comments but felt also sadness at their separations.
Another good aspect of the book was the relationship between Newton and his father, I literally shed tears when his father died and he did not had the time to tell him face to face that he was sorry for what he did.
This book teaches us that love is not a feeling but a choice, that listening to God will bring you more peace and fulfillment then listening to your heart, pleasures or material thinks you wish to obtain.
Loved this story behind the song “Amazing Grace!” It was the life story and the love story of John Newton and his wife, Polly Catlett. It was highly addictive and fun to read! Rating: 5 stars 😍 Recommend: for everyone ages 16+ Warning: disturbing details about smuggling, whipping, maritime life, slavery, and illicit sex Read: 5/3-5/20
What a powerful novel on the life of John Newton and the love of his life, Polly! I loved reading about Newton's life and everything he went through, namely everything God put him through trying to get him to turn his life around for the better. Reading this has given me a whole new perspective on the song "Amazing Grace" and I know I will never be able to listen to it the same.
Beautiful cover, intricate characters, challenging topic & era combine to create a story, which at times, may seem frustrating and certainly will be difficult to read in parts. Jody Hedlund has taken the true story of John Newton, author of one of the most well known songs ever written 'Amazing Grace' and his powerful love for Polly Catlett. They meet as young teens (though Jody has 'aged' them a little in her story in order for it to be more believable to modern day readers), and their passion forms a connection that is tested through countless separation's and trials. Most of all the epic journey of faith that John must go through. While he doesn't start out totally lost, he eventually finds himself there through a never-ending bad choices and decisions that seem to dig him into deeper and deeper holes of despair. He is reckless, his opinion's about God seem to become more & more cynical. His life seems to be taking him further and further from any opportunity to be with Polly. She also must choose, between waiting for a man who will likely never be able to meet her spiritually, and settling for another, whom she does not love but will be able to provide for all the financial expectations of the day for the middle class of England.
I read this book, wondering if there would be any hope for John & Polly, especially knowing that Jody had used real life events and characters to base this book on. Personally, I prefer to read stories with a more positive outlook. I'm also not always a fan of reading true life historical drama. Some of them are tedious. The cover for this book however was a big pull, and the reputation of Jody Hedlund, who always writes with skill and expertise - and heavily researches her topic. Of course, it tackles some difficult subjects, first the distrust and abuse of the authority in Customs, with the illegal trade & smuggling that went on. Though many tried to stand for what was right, they often did this alone or faced serious repercussions, often ending in death. Also, the Slave Trade is a large part of this story. During this time period it was accepted by the 'civilized world'. I found some of these descriptions hard to read, Jody wrote them with sensitivity in mind I am sure, she could have included much, much more.
One part of this book stood out to me above the rest. As John is reflecting on his past choices and thoughts in regard to God we have the following .... "What if the Scriptures that he'd long opposed were true? What if they were not only historically accurate, but what if the message of the gospel was real and applicable?" I am certain that most of us, including those that maybe are not sure if there is a God in Heaven will wonder these very same questions at some point in our lives. This is the turning point for John Newton, and for all of us, we must ask ourselves at some point - do we believe in God? Is He real? Are the scriptures written about him true? With those answers, whatever they may be for us, we then need to plot our course and put that faith into practice.
Thank you to Waterbrook & Blogging for Books for the complimentary copy of this very thought provoking book. This is my honest review.
So I finished Newton and Polly almost three weeks ago, and didn't have a chance to write a review until now. But let me tell you, the story--their story--is still swirling around my mind and heart.
John Newton and Polly Catlett's tumultuous, enduring love story makes for the perfect tale of amazing grace, and author Jody Hedlund paints their lives in vivid and such personal detail I felt like I was stepping along the cobble roads of Chatham with Polly and breathing in the sea air on the deck of the Greyhound with Newton.
One of the strengths of this story is Jody's ability to show wayward, irresponsible young Newton in a light that draws the reader to him, making us cheer for him despite his reckless spirit and decisions. Sweet, devout Polly cares deeply for Newton, although her parents' hesitancy hinders their budding relationship.
Newton and Polly is definitely one of Jody's finest stories yet, and that's saying a lot because I love-love-loved Luther and Katharina (and all of her other stories!). She beautifully paints the redemption that occurs in Newton's life as his poor choices lead him down dark roads, until he crashes into God's amazing grace.
There were definitely a few tears shed near the end of the story.
Easily one of my top three reads this year, Newton and Polly is a transformational journey of a man who didn't know he needed to be found, by a God who rewrites even the most broken stories, and authored by a gifted storyteller.
I've heard a lot about John Newton's life growing up. In fact, the hymn Amazing Grace is one that is probably on my list of favorites. But I didn't know much about his early life.
This book pulled me in from the beginning. At the time that I received this book, I was in a bit of a reading slump, and nothing was holding my interest. Then this book arrived in my mailbox. It's been on my list for a long time as the author is one of my favorites. So I started reading it. Over the course of a weekend, I was in engrossed in John and Polly's story.
I never realized how exciting of a time that these two lived in. I also never knew exactly what sort of obstacles that God put in Newton's path to get his attention.
To say that I loved this book, would be an understatement. I loved it. But I think what I loved the most about it is the picture of grace that is portrayed throughout.
I received a complimentary copy of the book as part of the Blogging for Books program in order to share my honest opinion about the book. I was not required to like the book, only share my honest opinion of it. My thoughts and opinions are my own.
Recommended to fans of Jody Hedlund, Lynn Austin, historical fiction, Amazing Grace
A story of God’s amazing grace to one John Newton, whose life was so mired in the depths of sin that he felt he could never be redeemed or ever called worthy of God’s love. A story strife with one man’s journey so far away from God, that in human terms, could never be fit for a God-fearing society. One who, not only dipped his toes in sin, but plunged to the very depth of things unspoken on the lips of a righteous man. It only makes this story even more awesome when on one fateful night in John’s life where death was eminent, he began to cry out to the very God he so hated & his life was changed. Where he threw himself on the One who could extend the kind of mercy and grace so undeserving, yet so amazing that his life was never the same from that night forward. He knew his sins were unforgiveable, yet God in His infinite love, saved him from death’s door and extended salvation.
I never knew the story behind John Newton until now, but the depth that the author goes into telling the account of his life made it a reality. I learned so much through this & it helped remind me of the mercy and grace God extended to me when I became one of His. It also made the song Amazing Grace even more meaningful once I learned of all Newton went through & how it perfectly applied to his journey from a sinful, wretched man to one God redeemed! I was invested in this story, emotionally moved to tears in places, my heart aching for how far Newton fell & how in awe I was when God called him out of the dark place into His infinite light! And I enjoyed learning of Polly, the one bright spot in Newton’s life who God used to remind him of all that was good in the world. How she prayed & begged God in the wee hours of the night for his very soul. Their love story was bittersweet, wrought with pain and strife. But oh the sweeter in the end! I can’t recommend this highly enough; I think everyone needs to read this story. The author does an amazing job of telling the story of how God can call anyone from the very depths of sin to His glorious love, mercy & grace!
*I received a complimentary copy of this from Waterbrook publishing in exchange for my honest review, which I have provided here. Thank you Jody for another exquisite tale as old as time, told in your unique memorizing voice! Here’s to many more adventures! *
This is one of those novels that is such a gem and so well crafted that no words seem fit to describe the work itself or the emotions it evokes. Jody Hedlund has brought to life the story of a lost, vile and decrepit man who through God's grace, mercy, and power was used to write an ageless hymn. I knew that part of the story; yet I was still mesmerized by how real it was and the fervor and passion that surged from the pages. . What I didn't know was the story of his love for a woman that never left his heart and who God used to bring about his conversion and his famous hymn.
It's a simple story in that Christ saves...anyone and everyone. However, to read the events, the heart wrenching scenes, and feel the characters emotions makes it a beautifully written masterpiece that will fill your mind and heart....and leave an impression there.
I highly recommend that you read this novel, learn from its pages, and rejoice in the amazing grace of our blessed Savior.
"'Oh God,' he breathed again, knowing deep in his heart that God had heard and answered his calls for mercy, had in fact answered them when he'd least deserved it."
I received this novel from the publisher for my honest opinion which I have given. It was indeed a pleasure.
Jody Hedlund has done it again. This book, while not my all time favorite of hers, is still a fantastic read. I loved going behind the scenes in Polly and Newton's life. The setting is great and of course the real life story, which very historically accurate, is a wonderful addition to my library. While this book spans about seven years, Hedlund did a nice job keeping the reader up to date and not confused. Hedlund is one of my favorite authors and she hasn't written anything I haven't loved.
If you enjoy historical fiction with a dash of romance you will enjoy this sweet novel.

How did I miss this book when it released last year?! Waterbrook needs to do a better job of book promotion. I love Jody Hedlund's stories, and she knocked this one out of the park. Seriously. The way she introduces John Newton and then develops his character so that the reader is sucked into his story is nothing short of brilliant. Everyone will love Polly, she's an incredible young woman, but it's Newton who steals the spotlight as we watch him become the man God wanted him to be. It's a roller coaster of highs and lows. No spoiler here. Read the book!
I love historical novels that engage me in such a way that I find myself doing research on the actual subject (be it a time frame or a person, as in this case). I definitely felt that way about this book, and looked up more on the life of John Newton. It's also kinda cool to read a book where you know the 'ending', as it were. In this case, we know that Newton eventually gave up his rebellious ways and embraced the gospel of Jesus Christ with his whole heart . . . going so far as to become a minister, and penning the words to several beloved hymns that teach us essential truths. But, to see his behaviour at the beginning of this novel was heartbreaking . . . each time I thought he couldn't get more obstinate, that he couldn't possibly try and pass off his bad behaviour and choices as the result of someone else's 'misdeeds', he somehow manages to. I suppose the author showed us this to emphasise what a huge change Newton went through when he finally 'got it'. I liked that we got to see what Newton's sweetheart Polly might have been like. I like that even though she was attracted to Newton, she was willing for the most part to listen to her parents and that she understood that she couldn't have a relationship with Newton unless he were to give his life to Christ. I also really enjoyed the way the author used little phrases from the hymn 'Amazing Grace' throughout the story . . . showing how Newton might have been inspired to choose specific lyrics for that beloved hymn. 4.5 stars
This is a fictional story about John Newton and his Wife. However, there is a lot of what really happened in the story which I appreciate. John Newton wrote the famous hymn Amazing Grace. This story tells about his life before he was a Christian and when he met Polly. Eventually he does become a Christian in the book. I was amazed at how horrible he was as an unsaved man. I also was amazed at how many times God saved him from death. It is a really good testament of Salvation to save a man like John Newton. That being said Polly and John’s relationship had great chemistry and they were fun together but also you felt for them when they couldn’t be together. When they finally do get together at the end and John is a Christian it’s a happy ending! The writing is great and I loved the way the story was told. Overall a great read, clean and I definitely recommend! ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
