Gemma McDougall is certain about three things: One, she’s never going to lose her Latina ass. Two, her career is more important than the crappy (and nonexistent) relationships she’s had to endure her entire adult life. Three, she’s going to get the next promotion to detective if it kills her. But then her job literally almost kills her, and she’s forced into unwanted medical leave.
Sam London is certain about three things: One, he has no idea how to have a normal adult relationship and will likely die cold and alone, ravaged by wild dogs. Two, playing a game of Drinking Jenga, while fun, also leads to late nights sneaking into the neighbor’s yard and getting held at gunpoint by the neighbor’s daughter. Three, he has no idea what kind of trouble Gemma McDougall has gotten herself into, but he’s going to be a part of it, no matter what.
Mary Frame writes romantic comedies with quirky characters, steamy moments, and banter that will make you blush and snort-laugh at the same time. She’s a full time mom with a full time job and has no idea how she manages to write novels, but it probably helps that she's a dedicated introvert. She doesn't enjoy writing about herself in third person, but she does enjoy reading, writing, dancing, and damaging the ear drums of her co-workers when she randomly decides to sing to them.
She LOVES hearing from readers and will not only respond but likely begin stalking them while tossing out hearts and flowers and rainbows! If that doesn't creep you out, e-mail her at: maryframeauthor@gmail.com
Update 4/20/16-- It's here! Well, it's been here for a few days. I sort of forgot to update this.
I'm not really sure what to say about this book. I've read it so many times and edited so much that it's impossible for me to look at it with unbiased eyes at this point. I have to admit, though, Sam is probably my favorite male character that I've written to date (except for perhaps Ted). ;)
Anyway, I hope you enjoy the story! A HUGE thank you to everyone who requested an advance copy and to everyone who wrote reviews and read and sent me messages, I really appreciate all of you!
While this is penned as a third novel in the series, it's got nothing to do with the previous two installments. The first two novels' protagonists were young adults. "Practically Imperfect" is definitely not in the new adult romance category, as both protagonists are around thirty, have well-established careers, and there is no over-the-top drama and angst, which are so prevalent in the new adult genre - all pluses as far as I'm concerned.
Gemma is a policewoman, who's got injured on the job and is having medical leave. Sam is a partner in an architecture firm. While Gemma can't find a guy who'd be OK with her job, Sam can't seem to stay in a relationship for too long, and he's at a loss as to why. They've known each other for a long time, as they lived next to each other during their childhood. But for whatever reason, they never got along.
When Gemma's attacked in her parents' home, where she was convalescing, Sam inadvertently saves her. They end up hiding in Sam's house. As expected, feelings develop. Meanwhile, Gemma's work situation is getting stranger; reports are being modified and evidence is disappearing. The police mystery/drama/suspense (not sure how to categorise it) added an extra layer to the story. As for the love story, it's pretty straight forward, without too much conflict or build-up - if anything, and I can't believe I'm saying this since I often complain about the over-the-top drama and misunderstandings, the love story could have done with a bit more something in that department. But other than that, it felt very realistic and natural, like most normal, functional adults would/should have.
So, I'll conclude by saying that this was a quick, enjoyable read, that would be the perfect on a rainy day (as it was the case for me), or on holidays.
This one is adorable. As long as you go at it from a pure entertainment and don't analyze the police part of it, the two main characters are pretty cute!
This one is Sam's story - Lucy's...youngest older brother. One of the pranksters that loves to leave his photo on Lucy's ceiling. I love his humor and good nature. I love how laid back he was and easy to roll with the punches. But he is much like Lucy, maybe a little too serious about life and has a tough time showing others who he really is.
So he's struck out in love.
But in walks his neighbor, back on to the scene at maybe the worst possible moment. The two could be good for each other. Or maybe not.
The best was also the peak into Lucy's world and to see Freya again! I loved the little moments with them and having seeing their personalities from a different POV. It was a fun quick read.
Mary Frame é uma querida! Esse livro é um presente, basicamente. A leitura flui com tanta naturalidade que vc lê e nem percebe. O lado ruim disso é que ele acaba logo, logo.
O humor é ótimo. Os personagens são mega cativantes. A trama é inteligente e sagaz.
Os personagens dos outros livros aparecem e só complementam positivamente nessa leitura.
Adorei a Gemma e o Sam. Recomendo muito os livros da autora.
*será que é querer muito um livro sobre o Jackson??
"Practically Imperfect" by Mary Frame is a charming, witty romance that captivates with its imperfectly perfect characters. The third installment in the "Imperfect" series, the story unfolds with humor and heart as protagonist Daphne navigates life's chaotic journey. Frame skillfully weaves a narrative of self-discovery and love, making readers laugh and root for the relatable characters. The book's refreshing honesty about imperfections adds depth to the romantic tale, making it a delightful read. With its blend of humor, romance, and authenticity, "Practically Imperfect" is a feel-good novel that reminds us that imperfections make life beautifully real.
First of all I'd like to thank the author for sending me a copy of this wonderful story. This book is much more different from previous books of this series. By the first scene I was plunged into the atmosphere of police station's life. I clearly imagined all little details beginning with copy machine's noises and ending with some little pranks for rookies. All of this set the tone for a whole story. I liked the main heroine Gemma, she is tough and she is a good friend and a really good person. She is funny and has her special way of communication with people. She is not perfect, she is just a person who wants to succeed. I loved Sam, his strange sense of humour, I adored his family, his sister Lucy, who helped him to realize how just to be himself, I enjoyed to read about his way to find himself, his interactions with Gemma. And finally, I liked the quotes in the beginning of every chapter, they were about perfection, and I found them very useful and wise for every person who ever thought about imperfection of his/her body, character or life. All those quotes help to remind how different we all are, and it's not bad to be imperfect.
What I love most about this series is how the heroines are not very typical. Lucy, Freya, and now Gemma, all of them have exceeded my expectations on main female characters. They are such bad ***es in their own unique way and most definitely, they are no damsel in distress.
Gemma, was a very strong woman and I like how she stands for her principle and beliefs and does her job well. I like Sam for not stereotyping when it comes to women like Gemma. And the way he cared for Gemma was absolutely a plus. The two of them together is so hilarious to watch I enjoyed every bit of their moment together.
And since this is sort of a romance-comedy-mystery/suspense novel, it also had me on edge when the suspense bit played into the picture. Add Lucy, Freya and their other friend whose name I can’t remember, I’m telling you, you’ll have a hard time putting this book down.
And Lucy ‘showing’ how much she loves her brother while in a wedding dress is definitely my favorite scene.
If you want a bit of suspense, laughter, drama and love, this one is highly recommended!
Practically Imperfect begins when Gemma, who is a cop, ends up stumbling upon something that puts her life in danger. The thing is she really doesn't even know what she stumbled upon and it's not only getting dangerous it's getting downright terrifying for her and her loved ones.
Add in the addition of her long time neighbor Sam and things get even more out of control. When Sam and Gemma can't seem to stay away from each other, and the fact that he gets dragged into everything things take a turn for the worse.
This book was very interesting. I really enjoyed the plot line, and getting to see characters from previous books. This one wasn't as good as the previous ones, but it was still very enjoyable. I liked Gemma and Sam together. I just wish we had got to see a little bit more of their time together. It also ended with a nice HEA!
I really liked this third book in the Imperfect series. I loved the characters in it and I was happy to read more about some of the characters too. It was a quick read once I was able to sit down and actually read some all at once. LOL
"The brave may not live forever, but the cautious do not live at all."
Grandma "Is well known for drinking too much and calling everyone Scooby. I think because she's forgotten all of her grandkids' and great grandkids' names. I don't really blame her. I have a hard time keeping track of my own family, too. There's just too many of us. I can't decide if Grandma is senile or a genius."
I laughed out loud with those lines, as well with the part when grandma is reading the streets signs.
Pearls of humor about family love like those, and like the stories about the pranks the London brothers pulled to each other when younger, were the best part of reading the book.
The previous book in the series (Imperfectly Criminal) stole my heart (If you haven't read it, hurry to get it now). This book had a high bar to rise to. I felt the heroine didn't have a voice as unique and recognizable as Freya and Lucy had in the previous novels. I also felt something was missing to make the chemistry and progression of emotional intimacy between the main characters more believable (maybe some more soul-baring exchanges or deepening of the background stories to reveal their vulnerabilities). Yet the book was still at the level (or better) than the last three books from "Bestselling Authors" I'd picked up.
And if the humor didn't crown it all, there's also the thought provoking quotes that appear in every chapter. Quotes such as "Better to do something imperfectly than to do nothing flawlessly." And, my favorite, attributed to Sam the Hero himself, "The brave may not live forever, but the cautious do not live at all."
This is book 3 of the Imperfect Series. Technically you could read it as a stand alone, but the main characters are side characters in books 1 & 2 and vice versa. I am loving this whole series. I don’t want to stop reading. Gemma is a cop who’s been burned by ex boyfriends who can’t handle her being a cop. Sam is the guy who grew up next door always pranking everyone. But he’s all grown up now. One night when she’s staying at her parents, and he knows they’re out of town, Sam is drunk and sneaks over to go sleep in her parents snow plow (that he and his brothers stole in book 1) Gemma catches him sneaking over, but he’s just in his boxers. All grown up and looking good. Gemma ends up needing to hide from criminals and Sam comes to the rescue. Neither one wants to fall for the other one, but will they be able to resist it? And can Sam help save her from the danger she’s in, even though she’s the cop and he’s not? No spoilers here. I’m on to book 4!
It was an okay read, but less compelling then the first two. Gemma keeps thinking that the fled suspect is someone she recognizes, she just doesn’t remember from what. As a reader, you start thinking of all people that have been mentioned in the book… but if it’s not someone mentioned, it doesn’t feel like a mystery solved of a huge plot twist. Did enjoy the little banter between Sam and Gemma, but could have been more.
Review of the series (1-3): Books intertwined nicely, with all the characters being the “hero’s” equally. The 2nd book had me in hysterics when the couple visited her mothers house. Honestly never laughed so hard when reading. All books are light hearted, funny and with extremely lovable characters (except jenson’s parents!)
This book, like the others of this series is highly entertaining. Gemma and Sam are great together, and individually as characters, too. Plus we get the best of Lucy and Freya and co. as well, so that’s fun. What I liked best is the way it’s written, because this author has a way of adding humour in unexpected places. Loved it!
This third installment of the series focuses on Lucy’s older brother and his involvement with the McDougall neighbors’ daughter next door (who is also a cool cop). Like all books in this series, you can definitely read it as a stand alone, but it’s also very fun to see our old friends Freya, Ted, and Jensen make cameos throughout the pages.
Not sure if the author did this on purpose but Sam and Gemma gave best friend vibes instead of romantic partner vibes. The book was mostly boring and there were missed opportunities that could’ve been used to build up on the romance. Although the police stuff was more fitting in this story compared to the last book because Gemma was a cop, I really didn’t care for it and it dragged on.
DNF due to boredom at 40%. I was, of course, VERY skeptical about unarmed heroine cop chasing HUGE man in the beginning, but continued reading anyway. Was completely uninterested in the mystery part, eventually skipping a chapter and wasn't engaged by the romance, as you can tell by my DNFing while the hero was bleeding from a bullet wound.
This entire review has been hidden because of spoilers.
This was a fun read! I like more the more recent works of Mary Frame nowadays (the Fox series is amazing) but like to go back to the Imperfect series from time to time. Gemma and Sam were cute and supportive of one another in a crisis that brought them together after not really knowing each other from years. And loved the Lucy and Jensen and Freya and Dean cameos!
