"Brown has created strong, intriguing leads in Jade and Whitney, both seemingly poised to continue in future adventures...a promising debut...an engaging novel." —Kirkus Reviews
"DON'T SPEAK is fast-paced, entertaining, and full of twists—I thoroughly enjoyed it. Jade Harrington is a kickass heroine." —Meg Gardiner, author of UNSUB
The nursery rhyme was wrong. Words can hurt you.
Ambitious, twenty-something FBI Special Agent Jade Harrington cuts her vacation short to investigate the murder of a conservative radio personality only to discover that he may be the victim of a serial killer. Whitney Fairchild, the elegant and charismatic Democratic senator from Missouri, campaigns in a cutthroat race for president of the United States. Cole Brennan, the most popular conservative talk-show host in the nation, battles nightly to save his country and help the incumbent Republican president maintain his ‘inner conservative’ to win re-election.
The lives of Jade, Whitney, Cole, and the killer—who has an agenda of his own—are on a collision course. That course will not just impact them each in ways they could never have foreseen, but also the future of the United States of America. Amidst a backdrop of contemporary power politics driven by the influence of talk radio and social media, Don't Speak thrills even as it explores many of the complex issues facing Americans today.
Prescient, Don’t Speak was completed a year before the 2016 US presidential election.

This is a very entertaining story for a new author, with great descriptions of characters and scenes so that you feel like you are watching a movie instead of reading! FBI agent Jade Harrington has spent the first day of her vacation making a list of what to do while she is off. Then the phone rings... The boss calls her back to work, a few people have been murdered in the same way and thoughts of a serial killer push the investigation. I really enjoyed the quick pace and action of the FBI team, and the killer is believable. Several twists keep you on edge, with a big reveal at the end! I won this book in a GoodReads giveaway, and it will hold the interest of most thriller readers.
If you're Independent or Democrat, you'll like it. Whitney Fairchild is about to be elected, but serial killer during the campaign is after right wing talk show hosts. They're killed by serial killer all over America. This book was written in 2015, brought back those ugly days. Unbelievable ending will surprise you.
I have had this book on my TBR list for years (!) and it always kept getting pushed down the list. Luckily for me, was a Goodreads’ Giveaway winner for the ebook version! Let me just say – I LOVED this book!
There are two overlapping plot lines in Don’t Speak. It is an election year and Whitney Fairchild, an elegant and eloquent Senator from Missouri is running just left of center race against the very conservative incumbant. In addition, Jade Harrington, an FBI agent, is called in to investigage the murder of a shock jock, conservative radio host who also has had his tongue removed. Soon after the investigation begins, Harrington realizes that it is tied to other similar cases, both in the past and occuring in the present.
As a former campaign manager and Sentatorial aid, I can attest to the veracity of the campaign. Obviously a lot of research went into this portion of the book. There were so many people who despised the talk show hosts that suspects grew with each chapter. There was a lot of action, a lot of drama and an extremely well thought out story in Don’t Speak.
Interestingly, the book was first published prior to the 2016 US presidential election so any comparisons come after the fact. There are very obviously some similarities between real and fictional radio hosts but any others are from hindsight. That fact made the book all the more interesting. I’ve read where this is a book that only “liberals” would enjoy but I disagree. Yes, the conservative talk show hosts are the ones who are targeted but because we had to read their on air tirades, you actually get a very two sided view of the two US political parties. I can safely recommend this to anyone who likes political thrillers or crime fiction.
Thanks to #AmazonKindle and #Goodreads for my copy of Don’t Speak.
This novel has a female running for president of the USA. A detective loner seeking a serial killer. The killer is murdering conservative talk shoe hosts. Is the battle of Dems and republicans. How familiar it sounds. The woman, a liberal wins the election, unlike our real recent election. This novel was well written, bet left a bitter taste in my mouth because of the politics of 2016. Just like real life, the people interested in politics are such two year olds. The mystery part was good, the politics not. Thanks to Goodreads.
J. L. Brown is an excellent writer. Don't Speak is a must-read for anyone who is a political junkie, thinker, and/or would enjoy learning about issues and policies. As an avid reader, I enjoy books that grab me from page one. Don't Speak grabbed my attention immediately, and I found myself turning the pages and couldn't put it down. I went through so many emotions while reading the book: I laughed out loud, I cried happy tears as I cheered for some of the characters, I got angry and wanted to scream at some characters as well, because I disagreed with their morals or ideology. That speaks volumes for J.L.'s writing, because I imagine each character and scene as reality. There were moments that I was even afraid. Let me just say that the book reminded me to be present and pay attention to my surroundings. There were many times, I caught myself yelling at the book, telling the FBI agent, Jade Harrington, to look at other areas for clues. Well, I was completely wrong. What a twist at the end. I was left wanting more. I hope J.L. is spending every moment writing the sequel because every day, I am wondering what her characters are doing.
Bravo, J.L. Keep writing. Write fast because I am ready for book 2.
THANK YOU, J.L. Brown, for this Absolutely, POSITIVELY, Fantastic Read! SHE is one of the best authors I've EVER read & 2 of my favorites are John Grisham & David Balducci!!!! And for the next to the last words throwing a HUGE curve ball!! LOVED IT!!!! OK, if you love mysteries, political thrillers, Today's Current complex Issues, serial killers.... This book has them all! I loved the phrase "Commiecrats'", you'll just have to read this book to find out what that means..... I am Blessed & Honored to have received this book as a giveaway & Thankful to be able to write this review!
This political thriller grips the reader by the seat of your pants......right to the very last 3 words. This novel has the right amount of everything a good thriller needs. The characters and the storyline are both engaging and well written, right to the point that's it's the last person you think of......with a smack in the face ending
The first Jade Harrington novel is a combination fair-play puzzle mystery and political thriller. We know that the killer is going to strike again, and we hope that Jade and her FBI task force will stop him in time ... but we don't know exactly who he is.
Jade and her team are on the trail of a serial killer who is targeting right-wing/conservative commentators. He's leaving a trail of bodies, with their tongues cut out. His primary target is Cole Brennan, who has thrown his support behind incumbent Pres. Ellison as he runs against female senator Whitney Fairchild.
The book, published in January 2016, feels oddly prescient. Ellison is a less-stupid version of Donald Trump, for example. Cole Brennan is an amalgam of many right-wing talk show personalities, but he most reminds me of Rush Limbaugh.
In any event, we get to know who all of the characters are and what their foibles are. Jade is trying to come to grips with a possible new romance -- with no less a person than Sen. Fairchild's legislative director -- while also trying to stop any more murders from happening.
The tension is first-rate, and all of the clues are laid out along the line to point to "whodunnit" -- except that they're so exceptionally well embedded that I was still surprised by a couple of the twists and turns. Highly recommended.
While I found the main character, Jade, and her team to be compelling, the story, itself, was not. With all that's going in our political world, there is nothing worse than stereotypes. Every. Single. Right-wing. Host had not one redeeming quality about him or her. Most were based transparently on actual talk show hosts. People need to be more educated than to rely on stereotypes. Just because one is pro life and has several children, doesn't mean one is evil or has (as the author wrote) a "Stepford wife." There were so many talking points taken right out of today's headlines with no real facts to support them. Sure, there are bad talk show hosts out there on both sides. I am open-minded, and I always look at both sides of an issue. I wish everyone would -- stop and listen. Do research. I have to because I teach research writing, and it's becoming more and more difficult to find reliable sources and to convince my students that 5 second soundbites do not tell the whole story. Don't allow a good novel to be bogged down with empty talking points.
I am going to read J. L. Brown's other book because I did like the main character; she did her job even if she didn't agree with the people who were murdered. I just hope this author doesn't continue to write with political empty talking points.
I received this book through the goodreads program. The book opens with someone getting beaten to death with a baseball bat, then it flashes forward 10 years. The conservative and liberal sides are clashing over the presidential race. And opinionated talk show hosts are being murdered. I actually really liked the book. I found it timely, especially given the current political situation. Looking forward to the next installment!
I loved this book!! It was entertaining while also intellectually challenging, well-researched, full of mystery and suspense, and was written to keep you from wanting to put it down. Great for a debut book. Can't wait until the sequel!!
I received this book as a goodreads giveaway. I really liked it. It was thrilling and never felt like it dragged. I enjoyed that it had a good balance of political views rather than being blatantly one or another. Great twists and turns.
THIS WAS A VERY INTRIGUING BOOK. I HAD A HARD TIME TRYING TO FIGURE OUT WHO THE BAD GUY WAS. IT DEFINITELY HAS A SURPRISE ENDING. DEFINITELY LIKE HOW THE AUTHOR TIED EVERYTHING TOGETHER
I loved this book! It was extremely well written and the story pulls you in from the first page. I thought I figured out who the killer was and then was shocked when they were revealed. I loved the ending and am looking forward to the 2nd Jade Harrington book.
As an avid reader and somewhat of a book snob I somewhat cringe at debut novels because, well, they just aren't that well written sometimes. I sure can't say that about Don't Speak, the debut novel from J.L. Brown. This book did not read as a debut novel but as one from a seasoned author. A fascinating storyline along with sharp writing made this book impossible to put down.
This book had me hooked from page one. I enjoyed how the author combined the political, legal, and entertainment aspects of the story into one storyline that was easy to follow and easy to believe. I also liked how the author changed from third-person telling of the story to first-person in the killer's chapters. This made me feel like I was in the mind of the killer and it really added to the story. I also loved how the political storyline seemed as if it was ripped from today's headlines. This really added a layer of authenticity to the story and made it seem real.
I loved the fact that the author kept me guessing until the end as to who the killer was. I have to admit I was shocked when the killer was revealed and their story was told in full. And then there's one more surprise left for the readers. When I realized what the surprise was I have to say it was a jaw dropping moment. This just made me love the book even more and also the author's ability to keep me on the edge of my seat and guessing from beginning to end. J.L. Brown is a gifted storyteller and this book proves it.
I can't wait to read the next Jade Harrington novel. Jade is a character I enjoyed reading about and want to know more about. She is strong yet vulnerable and is a character that most females can relate to. I'm hoping the next novel will keep Jade's group together and we can learn more about those characters as well.
If you enjoy reading thrillers you will enjoy this book. Although there are some graphic descriptions in the book nothing is too gory. (Believe me, I am someone who doesn't like to read really gory, yucky scenes in books and nothing in this book made me cringe.) Now I'm off to anxiously await the next installment in the Jade Harrington series.
I won this book from the goodreads give away. The book is breathtaking from the beginning to the end. the end of the book left me in an WOW what a twist for days! It's definitely a page turner.
I received this book from Goodreads, and thought it was a great book. very timely. Will be looking forward to the next one. I would highly recommend it.
I can think of a goodly number of people who perhaps should read this story. It's that incendiary in ways that speak to exactly how the political scene in America is today. The perspective is a fascinating view of what's taking place right before our eyes. This is a story so well plotted that I was surprised at every turn. It moves that fast and is what kept me involved in suspense, mystery and a need to know what was coming next. It is one of those stories that allowed me to feel I was part of the action. I like that a lot when I am deep into every aspect of a novel, keeping track of what the characters say, think and do. All the while, I was right beside the main character, Jade Harrington, as she struggled, in spite of her advanced expertise, to find the killer antagonist who has disrupted her life and work on a personal level. It's a complex psychological assault on her skill as an FBI Agent. I felt this too was timely to address the rigors that people experience in that profession. Even now, as we are bombarded by those who would speak out against agents of the FBI who serve our nation every day and night to keep us safe gave due concern as I read about how it might be for them. This story begs us to look at our opinions with a bit more open-mindedness.
There are events in Don't Speak that make it an entertaining read as well as providing insight or perhaps just makes us think about things in a way that may be different than we thought. I believe to craft a storyline such as this with some of the surprises that occur along the way, shows immense understanding of the art of fiction writing. I would recommend this novel to anyone who enjoys a thriller kind of suspense. I certainly did. Further, I have purchased the next novel in this series with great expectation of what surprises lay ahead.
When I read the brief description of this selection, the plot sounded very compelling. However, as the book unfolded, this once promising novel became just another “soapbox” for failed socialistic ideas. The FBI agent in charge investigating the assassinations of constitutional speaking radio talkshow hosts is the liberal stereotype black, female, and former basketball star. Not unlike our present biased FBI, this agent has a close female friend who is blogs and is in chat rooms with Marxists . The sub-plot is that of a Presidential campaign where a female, Democratic Senator is running against a sitting Republican who is controlled by constitutional speaking radio talk shows. At one point the female candidate ponders WWHD ( What would Hillary Do?) I was sure that the novel when then include the killing of US Ambassador in Benghazi, the killing of her husband’s advisor, inside trading on the Agriculture Futures Market, the establishment of a foundation to aide people where only her family got rich, or at the very least the planting of a dossier implicating her opponent of dealing with the enemy of the United States. But alas, it only had her husband having an affair with a neighbor which was naturally the neighbor’s fault. If you enjoy reading Marxist rhetoric, the idea silencing of ideas by assassination, and law enforcement with political agendas, you will like this book. I was very disappointed in what could have been a very good book if the author was not trying to further her political philosophy.
I won this book through Goodreads. "Don't Speak" is a political thriller. I very much enjoyed the politics. It was timely and I was impressed that we read about both sides of the issues. There was obviously a lot of research done on the political climate in DC today. Even better than the political discourse was the mystery. I liked that Brown used the first person point of view for the killer and switched to third person for the rest of the novel. It gave us a little bit different perspective. The mystery itself was complex and kept my interest. The "doer" wasn't obvious and several potential killers and potential victims were brought into the plot, leaving the reader questioning the motives of everyone right up until the end. I really liked the lead character, Jade Harrington. She's a strong woman but with her fair share of issues that help to keep her character interesting. Definitely a page turner that I would highly recommend for those who like politics or are interested in learning more about politics, those who like well written mysteries and for those who like strong female lead characters.
Don't Speak is the first novel in the Jade Harrington series of thrillers. Jade is a former Stanford basketball player who played briefly in the WNBA and overseas, before switching career paths and joining the FBI. Her latest assignment: track down the TSK, the Talk Show Killer who is brutally murdering conservative talk show hosts nationwide, both radio hosts and internet bloggers. This takes place during a presidential campaign, so you know the rhetoric is ramped up, and emotions are running high. . I like reading thrillers, but try to avoid politics. There's enough political drama on the news; I don't need it in my books. Brown, however, has created a gripping tale of Washington politics and all of the associated back-stabbing and deceit associated with that word. This story is smoothly written, and the author has created a cast of characters that readers will like to come to know as the series develops. The backstories and pasts of the characters are not fully formed, which is usual for the first book in a new series, but Brown has started off on a high note. . My Rating: 3.75/5 stars
