Weil eines meiner Patenkinder dieses Buch gerade in der Schule liest, wollte ich mir auch ein Bild machen. Die Geschichte ist recht kurzweilig, wenn auch nicht über die Maßen originell. Das schadet aber auch nichts, denn Kinder sollten vielleicht erst einmal die Gespensterklischees kennenlernen, bevor es ausgefallen wird. Und der Einsatz von Friedhofserde und Veilchenparfüm gegen Gespenster ist schon ganz nett.

Zu meiner Erleichterung wurden die vielen Abkürzungen, die am Ende des Buches erklärt werden, größtenteils nicht genutzt, das hätte mich vielleicht verwirrt. Wir lernen nur kennen: MUG (Mittelmäßig unheimliche Gespenster) und UEG (Unglaublich ekelhafte Gespenster).

a quick and fun read of an old childhood favourite. Every time I read a Cornelia Funke book I realise more and more how much her stories have shaped both me as a person, but also my own writing and the kind of characters I enjoy writing.
This is one of those children's books where the parents are basically inexistent which never felt weird as a child, but now as an adult, I definitely notice it more. One thing I've always loved about this series is the intergenerational friendship it has! Older characters in children's books who aren't parents or grandparents bring me so much joy because they're rarely represented but those relationships are so fun and there is so much both characters can learn from the experience of the other! Also Hedwig Kümmelsaft is one badass old lady and I'd love to go fight ghosts with her.

Esta edición que leí es preciosa. Tiene unas ilustraciones que te mueres de lo bonitas que son y además tiene un precio genial para la calidad de las páginas y para ser tapa dura. Es una pena que sólo me haya durado un día, y ya quiero leer el siguiente libro.

Tom es un chico al que las cosas le pueden salir bastante mal y su hermana Lola suele ser cruel y burlarse de él por esta misma razón. La historia comienza relatando la visita de Tom al sótano por encargo de su madre. Él siente temor porque puede encontrarse con algún fantasma y de hecho su mala suerte lo lleva a toparse con uno enorme y terrorífico que lo espanta. Sus padres y hermanas no le creen porque al ir al sitio no encuentran rastro de dicho ente.

Tom está muy preocupado y su abuela le cuenta sobre su mejor amiga, Hedwing Comino, una señora mayor que le enseñará como hacer frente al fantasma del sótano. Pero las cosas no resultan como espera y Tom está decidido a ayudar a Hugo, el fantasma, a regresar a casa.

Cornelia Funke es una gran escritora que logra ser verosímil a pesar de que este es un libro de fantasmas y de nombres graciosos para los personajes. Creo que el libro puede enseñar a los niños a entender que está bien sentir miedo y que nos podemos enfrentar a eso que los atemoriza, además, logra retratar la amistad entre personajes tan distintos y de encontrar soluciones creativas a problemas enormes.

Finally, I resume reading through the works of Cornelia Funke. I fell in love with the Inkheart series. Devoured Dragon Rider. Inhaled Reckless. Delighted in Thief Lord. I wonder if the translators are catching up with her smaller works now.
The Ghosthunters series is enjoyable for all ages, yet, I found them in the young children's section, perhaps (as is not always obvious why they choose one area over another), perhaps because they are shorter, who knows.
As ever, she takes a known idea and takes it to an area new to me. I like how she makes it playfully serious.

I look forward to more.

Eine seltsamere Gespensterjägertruppe als die drei, die uns in diesem ersten Buch der vier Bände umfassenden 'Gespensterjäger' Reihe von Cornelia Funke begegnen, kann man sich kaum vorstellen! Es sind dies nämlich der von seiner großen Schwester Lola gepiesackte Angsthase Tom Tomsky, die wackere alte Dame Hedwig Kümmelsaft (auch was pfiffige Namen anbelangt zeigt die Autorin ihren scheinbar unerschöpflichen Ideenreichtum!) und – ausgerechnet! - ein Gespenst höchstselbst. Hugo, so heißt dieses schimmlig-grüne, schleimige Wesen, mit dem überhaupt alles anfing! Ihn entdeckte Tom zu seinem allergrößten Entsetzen im ohnehin schon ekligen, ganz und gar nicht einladenden Kellerraum des Wohnhauses, in dem Tom mit seiner Familie lebt. Und glaubte ihm etwa jemand, als er von seiner Begegnung mit einem Gespenst erzählte? Das übrigens hätte er besser nicht getan, denn sein Angstschlottern war Wasser auf den Mühlen seiner unbarmherzigen Schwester. Doch halt – die Oma lachte ihn nicht aus, sondern schickte ihn vielmehr zu ihrer Freundin, die sich mit Gespenstern auskennt – zu besagter Hedwig Kümmelsaft nämlich! Die nimmt Tom ernst und sagt ihm auch gleich, wie er das schleimige Schreckgespenst in seinem Keller loswerden kann, das sie als MUG identifiziert, also als Mittelmäßig Unheimliches Gespenst, mit dem Tom ohne weiteres fertigwerden könnte, mit den altbewährten Abschreckungsmitteln Spiegel, Musik, rohen Eiern und roter Kleidung – alles Dinge, wie jedermann weiß, die Gespenster wie das in Toms Keller so überhaupt nicht mögen.
Gesagt, getan – Tom jagt nun seinerseits dem Gespenst einen Heidenschrecken ein. Damit hätte die Sache eigentlich erledigt sein können, wenn das Gespenst, das sich als Hugo vorstellt, nicht so unglücklich wäre, weil es nun Toms liebgewonnenen Keller verlassen soll, heimatlos, wie es jetzt ist! Denn eigentlich wohnte Hugo in einer alten Villa am Stadtrand, in der er und der Bewohner, Herr Lieblich, sich friedlich miteinander eingerichtet hatten. Bis ein UEG auftauchte, ein Unglaublich Ekelhaftes Gespenst, das unseren Hugo in die Flucht schlug und von nun an den armen Herrn Lieblich nach Strich und Faden tyrannisierte. Was also ist zu tun? Hedwig Kümmelsaft, die flugs konsultiert wird, weiß Rat! Sie ernennt Tom und Hugo kurzerhand zu ihren Assistenten und heckt einen Plan aus, wie das UEG, ein ganz anderes Kaliber als ein MUG und dazu noch gemeingefährlich, unschädlich gemacht werden kann, damit Hugo wieder zurückziehen kann in seine Villa, um die Wohngemeinschaft mit Herrn Lieblich wieder aufzunehmen.
In der Tat wird es von nun an sehr spannend und überaus turbulent und spaßig. Tom mausert sich vom Hasen- zum Löwenherz während seines ersten Einsatzes als Gespensterjäger – und kann am Ende sogar noch einen längst fälligen Triumph über seine große Schwester feiern, hinter deren großer Klappe eine weit weniger mutige Person steckt als das, was hinter der Schüchternheit ihres Bruders zutage tritt! Und da kann man sich nur freuen für den kleinen Kerl, der bewiesen hat, was in Wirklichkeit in ihm steckt....
Einen schaurig-schönen Gruselspaß hat sich Cornelia Funke mit ihren Geisterjägern einfallen lassen, deren vorliegender erster Band schon in ihrer frühen Schaffensperiode entstanden ist. Besonders reizvoll sind auch die Illustrationen, die sie selbst dazu angefertigt hat, denn das Zeichnen versteht sie, die als Kinderbuchillustratorin begonnen hat, ebenso meisterhaft wie das Schreiben qualitätsvoller, sprachlich differenzierter, ungemein kreativer, phantasievoller Romane. Vielseitig ist sie, packt die unterschiedlichsten Themen an, lässt sich nicht festlegen – und so wurde sie zu Recht zu einer der international bekanntesten Autorinnen in der Kinder- und Jugendbuchliteratur, jemand, deren Bücher, die wirklich jeder jungen Leseratte zu empfehlen sind, zum Teil sogar als Schulliteratur genutzt werden.
Und wer noch nichts von ihr gelesen hat und ungefähr sieben oder acht Jahre alt ist, könnte es ja mal mit ihren Geisterjägern probieren, die, nebenbei gesagt, zu den besten Büchern dieses Genres gehören, die ich kenne, denn sie haben alles, was ein gutes Gespensterbuch ausmachen sollte, vom Wortwitz, der eines von Cornelia Funkes Markenzeichen ist, ganz zu schweigen! Und es darf angenommen werden, dass so mancher junge Leser – wie die Verfasserin dieser Zeilen dereinst - danach von den Büchern der Schriftstellerin gar nicht mehr genug bekommen kann...

I found and read this in the school library when I was little but didn’t even realize that it was by Cornelia Funke, whose Thief Lord I fell in love with when I got a bit older, and whose Inkworld series I’m still dying to read someday. This book was so much fun - language, illustrations, story, flippable animated little ghost on the corner of the pages and all. I love her <3 Our (tiny and shabby, yet resourceful) library was at times the perfect treasure trove. I would never have found Eva Ibbotson, Patricia Wrede, Gwyneth Rees, Sharon Creech, Jacqueline Wilson or Emily Rodda without it - authors that produced memorable, flawless, clever books that made me love reading as a child. Makes me wonder how a lot of the books I read now (talking to you, YA genre :P) don’t even come close to the quality of the ones I read as a child. Children’s books (especially the beautifully well-written ones by these authors!) have a different kind of engaging magic to them.

Doamna Chimion, din relatările lui Tom, descoperă tipul de fantomă- o FMS (fantomă medie sinistră) și îi oferă informații cum să scape de ea, dar lucrurile iau o întorsătură și ajung cei doi să-i ofere ajutor fantomei

Cu ajutorul propietarului, domnul Pirpiriu, reusesc să izgnoneasca FIT (fantomă incredibil de ticăloasă) , iar Hugo (FMS) să se întoarcă "acasa"

Super süsse und witzige Geschichte um einen Jungen, der in seinem Keller ein gruseliges Gespenst findet. Das Buch ist total hübsch aufgemacht mit einigen farbigen Bildern von den Gespensterjägern. Kann man auch als Erwachsener noch gut lesen, auch wenn es schon auf eine jüngere Zielgruppe gedacht ist.

Well, that was fun. I still prefer the German book cover & voice I imaged for Hugo, but a good book nonetheless. Can't believe it's only a 2 hour audio book, I felt like it was a super long book in elementary school. It's kinda refreshing how there's no world building/setting the scene at the beginning of the book, we jump into the action straight away.

Ghosthunters and the Incredibly Revolting Ghost by Cornelia Funke is a thrilling and enticing science fiction novel that pulls the reader in immediately. This book follows a nine year-old boy, Tom who comes face to face with a creature that humans fear the most, GHOSTS! Not to mention that this Average Spooky Ghost lives in the cellar of his family home AHHHH! Tom quickly begins to use his ghost busting skills to vanquish the ghost while becoming friends along the way for the common good of dissipating a bigger, meaner, and scarier ghost that has been haunting the town and bullying the Average Spooky Ghost.

This was a WOW book to me because it is a thrill-seeking novel that captured my attention from the beginning and kept me entertained the whole time while reading. I love the spin that the author takes when making the main character, Tom become unlikely friends with the Average Spooky Ghost (ASG) to fight off the scarier, Incredibly Revolting Ghost (IRG). This book shows the tale of true friendship and the depths that individuals will take to save the ones that they care about.

When it comes to activities for this novel, many ideas come to mind. One idea could be to have the students draw a picture of their own ghosts and instead of personifying them as scary, have the students make the ghosts do something good for other people. This will allow children to understand that the perception that one person gives off changes your viewpoint of that certain individual. Another activity could involve the students writing a different ending to the novel and how they would have showed bravery when it came to fighting off the Incredibly Revolving Ghost. This allows students to use their imagination and be able to figure out different heroic actions that could have occurred to fight off the ghost that was haunting the town.
