Lumberjanes: Beyond Bay Leaf Special #1

Rate this book

What’s to Love: It’s our first-ever Lumberjanes special and we could not be more excited to welcome writer Faith Erin Hicks (The Adventures of Superhero Girl) and newcomer artist Rosemary Valero-O’Connell to our growing Lumberteam. This self-contained story perfectly captures the spirit of what the Lumberjanes are: hardcore lady-types who can fend for themselves, but also quick to help those who are in need!

What It Is: In this special one-shot issue, a monster is terrorizing the Lumberjanes camp and the girls go to stop it. However, it turns out that the monster is being framed and now the girls have to figure out who’s doing it and to what end! Join April, Jo, Mal, Molly and Ripley as they earn their Beyond Bay Leaf pin!

Born in the wilds of British Columbia, the young Faith frolicked among the Sasquatch native to the province before moving to Ontario at age five. There she was homeschooled with her three brothers, and developed an unnatural passion for galloping around on horseback, though never without a proper helmet (because you only get one skull). After twenty years of suffering through Ontario’s obscenely hot summers, she migrated east, and now lives beside the other ocean in Halifax, Nova Scotia. She worked in animation for a bit, and now draws comics full time. She’s not sure how that happened either.

Summer will end. Our friendship won't.

Short and fun read. Their simple yet wacky adventure made me giggle and feel warm.

This special is so mundane. It looks interesting at first, but shortly it becomes a template job. Jen takes girls to some learning, and suddenly a wild adventure appears. The girls behind Lumberjanes ensures me with every single arc and special that they have nice ideas about fantasy adventures, but zero to none creativity and innovation how to compose it to the whole story. it's like pub stories, which starts and ends completely same, only the shenanigans in middle is somewhat different (but still in the similar environment). I know I shouldn't expect much from Lumberjanes, but oddly I want to. So there comes the disappointment.

Not crazy about the art in this one and while I loved seeing Ripley have her moment and get to save the day...and I mean come on, GHOST PONIES!... this was yet another issue that felt unnecessary and like filler we didn’t really need. I like when we steer from the main story line but even when doing so, I’d like the reading experience to be worth it.

Probably my favorite Lumberjanes story which emphasizes how much the girls care for each other as friends. Also I thought the magical horse was really cool.

I really liked the special. The story manages to capture the essence of our Lumberjanes and the panels help the story greatly!

Nice little stand-alone issue and Riley gets to meet a "ghost pony"! Friendship to the max, yo.

A ghost pony, a summer camp, friendship, and an evil lady. What more do we want?

Those who have been following me on Goodreads/my reviews for some time know, I did not enjoy Lumberjanes. For various reasons, like no character development, story? whut?. But when I heard about these little short specials, my curiosity rose up. Especially since, despite the terrible start Lumberjanes had, I always kept being curious about the series. Would it become better? Would later parts have an explanation? So these shorts would be perfect for me to maybe easily slide back, and maybe give the second volume another try. But first the shorts!

This one starts with our band of rowdy girls going out during the night for a fun stargazing activity. I knew immediately, and also due what I saw from the first Lumberjanes volume, that this wouldn't just be a cute and fun stargazing activity for long. And indeed. Quite soon Ripley sees something and dashes off in light speed mode (really, that girl can RUN).

And so it all begins. Our girls quickly lose Ripley, and so our group is split up. Ripley finds a ghost horse, and I was in stitches over what she named it (that poor horse is now wishing he had thought of his own name before letting her pick one). While on the other hand our group is getting slightly lost but then finds a campfire. They meet up with someone named Sola. And with Sola the stories reunite again as the ghost horse that Ripley met is of importance for this creepy lady.

I have to say I never once trusted Sola. That woman just vibrated NOPE NOPE NOPE vibes and I was just trying to get the girls to understand that (yes, I know that the story is already set, but still!).

Our ghost horse's story was very sad, the poor thing. :(

And of course there is a battle to save not only the horses, but also the girls, as Sola makes a very tempting over to Ripley (she really knows who to pick out).

This was so exciting to read, I never once was bored, there were creepy moments, hilarious moments, and I just loved the friendship between the girls. Yup. This was a hit! I just got a few more specials to read, and maybe, just maybe, I may get to reading Lumberjanes Vol.2 and further.

Ah, I forget, the art was fabulous! <3

I love this artist usually, but, seriously? This borrows too heavily from The Last Unicorn. Shiny horse beings tracked down and captured until there is only one left! It tries to escape the evil person's bull wolves but is caught! Our heroines free the unicorns shiny horse beings all at once in a rush! On a cliff! :-/ Disappointing, since I was very excited to see Hicks's name attached to it, but I was hoping for something a little more original.

Absolutely terrible. The redemption was Ripley with her ghost pony, but the rest was horrible. The art was wonky. The characters didn’t even seem like themselves. The story didn’t really flow and the font was incredibly hard to read. The Lumberjanes deserve better than this hot mess.

Just a quick comic to finish up my unread Lumberjanes. Ripley finds a ghost pony (EEEEE!!!!) and something evil is lurking nearby to get to it. Girl power to the rescue! As usual, great graphics and a fun quick story.

It was cute! It’s always really irritating to me when the illustrators switch, though. I️ prefer the original person instead.

Realmente el arte me parecio muy feo, eso sin contar que si se sentia como una historia de relleno. Me decepciono un poco

Ripley chases after a ghost pony. The other four girls go after her and encounter Sola, who is also after the ghost pony.

A special issue of the Lumberjanes. A fun story with the Lumberjanes.

No, este especial no pasó la prueba. Sobre todo porque no entendí el cambio en los dibujos. Parecía estar viendo a alguien más, pero con las actitudes y nombres de las Lumberjanes.

I could've sworn that I had read this before...in fact, I know that i have. I guess I just forgot to mark it as read on here.

Anyway, I love the Lumberjanes. They're fun.

This was a cute read, but I prefer the storyline graphic novels, those have more adventures. Still nice graphics though.

The only reason I'm giving this a 3 stars is because I was COMPLETELY lost. I'm new to the comic book world and when I saw this in the comic book store and saw that this was "volume 1" I automatically assumed it was the FIRST ever Lumberjanes but after reading the reviews, I now know this was a special. I might change this rating if I decide to reread this comic after I've actually read the REAL first volume. This story was still incredibly cute and there was a ghost pony in it sooo that was pretty cool. It definitely made me look forward to reading the actual series from the beginning. Also, I think the art threw me off a bit because I was expecting it to be like Nimona (which was the whole reason I even PICKED this up) but of course, the art wasn't even Noelle's (not that it was bad though! It was still pretty cute! Anyways, I dont have much else to say about it except THIS IS NOT THE FIRST VOLUME OF LUMBERJANES IF THATS WHAT YOU'RE LOOKING FOR lol.

Ripley just has such a special place in my heart. I love any stories we get where she has a chance to shine and not just be a source of ridiculous one-liners. Not the longest or most complex short, but it was cute! I wasn't fond of the art style in this one, just because it was SO different, but after a couple of pages you get used to it and just focus on the ghost pony story.

Summer will end. Our friendship won't.

I get so emotional whenever these gals are offered their greatest wish (or threatened with their greatest fear) and all they want is for summer to last forever so they never have to be separated. It's such a real, raw preteen way to love, and thinking about the Roanokes growing up and apart made me cry.
