A good start to the series. Kiera Hudson is a great character. Intelligence and tough and determined. Though physically she us way out of her league.
I enjoy this series and it got better as it went along the last half of the book I could not put it down. I like how Kiera's character developed through the book. At the beginning I thought she was just an ambitious young police officer on a case way out of her comfort zone. Then it turns out how great an investigator she is and her reason for doing what she does.
There are many twists and turn in this book, many I did not see coming. One of the things I did not like about this book is how someone so smart could not see the clues in from of her about vampires? Though thinking about it someone so grounded in facts would not see them as they did not believe in them.
I very good start to the series I am definitely interested to see what happens next.
The first half of this book was great. Full of suspense, mystery and a heavy dose of horror, I was literally engrossed. But oddly, the second half lost all momentum. This is pnr and about vampires, which I love but the actual premise of the book? Not so much. These creatures are different, I won't say how but I wasn't impressed. Even the romance was strange. It was insta-love to the extreme, with the heroine questioning if she loved the hero within days of meeting him--there was minimal physical contact at this point. Even the physical scenes( not sex ), were awkward, they didn't flow like they should have and lacked emotion, tension and heat. Later I realized this was written by a male. I'm not saying male writers can't write romance, and although there are exceptions, female writers have that market cornered. Sorry. Mind you, that was my overlook, missing the actual gender of the writer.
Anyways, after 50% the book died a slow death. I loved the horror, the tautly frightful atmosphere and the mystery. But after all was revealed, and I mean the actual premise not the conclusion, I was sorely disappointed. The story also lacked meat, things being touched on lightly that should have been elaborated on, but maybe in later books? because this is the first in an extensive series...no thanks. Even with the book finishing on a cliffhanger I wasn't even remotely interested in continuing. So the rating for this book is specially for the horror. Nothing else.
OK, honestly. I’m so incredibly tired of the vampire theme in YA books today, I want to gag when I read the word vampire in a blurb or book title. But one – this is not a YA book. Two – I didn’t read the blurb. And three – these are not your everyday fall-in-love, sparkling, will-save-you-in-a-heartbeat vampires. No, no, no. These are monsters. Just the way I like ‘em! Ladies and gentlemen, allow me to introduce you to another marvelous horror writer. Yep, Tim O’ Rourke’s Vampire Shift scared the bejeesus out of me, and as I am a huge fan of horror, scaring me is something not easily done. It’s been a long time since I’ve read a book that creeped me out so much I felt like hiding under the covers after turning off the lights. Reading Vampire Shift was like watching a horror movie on the big screen. It had all the ingredients necessary to get my adrenaline pumping – terrifying vampire monsters, a sinister, small town cut off from the rest of civilization, the customary ominous old priest (a character with a twist I never could’ve predicted), the main character snowed-in with no means of escape, desecrated graves and dark underground tunnels leading to…well, I don’t want to give away too much. The entire time while reading this I had goosebumps all over and many times nearly jumped out of my seat with fright. This book is not for the faint of heart I can assure you. Horror fans be warned, you will love this!
What more can I say? The writing is good and without too much detailed descriptions the author still managed to create a sense of foreboding and trepidation throughout the story. Everyone was a suspect. Seriously. The good guys seemed to be the bad guys, and then certain things happened to convince me the bad guys are actually the good guys, and then some more unexplained things happened to have me so thoroughly confused I couldn’t make heads or tails of who the good guys and who the bad guys were. I have to hand it to the author – he knows how to construct a complex plot that keeps the reader intrigued, riveted, and guessing right up to the end – and maybe even questioning the strength of your bladder. All the characters – protagonists and antagonists alike – were all richly formed and three-dimensional. None of them, not even the minor characters, felt like carbon copies of characters I’ve come across before in similar books or movies. I was greatly impressed by the author’s creativity, especially in the fight-scenes and how I was constantly kept on the edge of my seat while paging my way through all the nail-biting suspense. So folks, keep an eye on this author. He’s going to make it big! And horror junkies…why are you still reading this? Aren’t you supposed to be on chapter two of this book by now? Go get your copy!
I was originally drawn to the stunning cover of Vampire Shift , it really caught my eye. Kiera just stares right through you.
I loved Tim’s odd group of coppers stuck out at The Ragged Cove trying to solve the mysteries of the ever increasing grizzly murders. Murphy the slipper wearing , pipe smoking Sergeant, despite the sign stating , “It’s against the law to smoke on these premises”. Potter the, crime scene contaminating , resident wise crack and forensic specialist and then there is the handsome , 22yr old Constable Luke Bishop, who can disappear on Kiera when she needs him most..... is he friend or foe?
20 yr old police officer, Constable Kiera Hudson upon completion of her initial training is posted at The Ragged Cove . I must admit when I started reading I youtubed ‘On The Floor’ by Jennifer Lopez and listened to it whilst reading the opening chapter as that’s what Kiera was listening to on her car radio, thought I would get into the mood of the book...lol!! But then... her radio failed her...she had entered The Ragged Cove district and I too had to shut off my song, I was really ‘feeling’ this book.. lol!!
Kiera has a gift , she can really ‘see’ her surroundings and sum up a crime scene within minutes, even with Potter carelessly contaminating them. Kiera just goes about her business, nothing really perturbs her. She has a Sherlock Holmes type personality.
I must admit by the end of ‘Vampire Shift’ , I was really liking Potter. He really grew on me, especially when he started sayng 'easy tiger’ to Kiera...me thinks he is crushing on her..... or not. I am hoping for more Potter in the sequel , ‘Vampire Wake’.
There were scene stealing action / fighting scenes that I could really 'see' as I was reading. Tim writes visually very well. You can see his characters and goings on very clearly.
There are twists and turns all through ‘Vampire Shift’. The couple things I figured out were outweighed by the rather surprising turn of events that Tim threw at the reader. He quite masterfully threw curve balls. I was suitably impressed as I am a reader who reads looking for clues and hints at possible outcomes of a story. I don’t just read. He surprised me several times.
I loved the quirky old lady who owned the Crescent Moon Inn with her crucifixes and bottles of holy water and her not so appealing grotty son, Roland.... the inn chef...eeep!!
Tim’s book has such originality, you truly believe that you are walking around The Ragged Cove and being part of the goings on. He has given a very original take on the Vampire genre which I found very refreshing, mix it with some quirky characters and you have a great page turner.
I could really see this book as a British movie with its odd characters of The Ragged Cove.
FAVE QUOTE:
“You make sure you do pretty lady, cos that Sergeant of yours couldn’t find his own arse with both hands and a flashlight.”
MY LITTLE POEM I WROTE FOR ONCE UPON A READ-A-THON CHALLENGE
This is a different take on Vampires, original, me thinks, An odd assortment of Coppers and their clink, A girl named Kiera, with jet black hair, A lad named Luke who acts like he doesn't care, A town named The Ragged Cove, Where people are left with big gaping holes in their throats.
A mystery to solve, Kiera is a bright one who is in the know, For Kiera has a gift, She can 'see' through the shit, A crime scene she can sum up in minutes, As long as Potter stops smoking his cigarettes.
There are twists and turns, Tim O'Rourke tells a great yarn, Do not go out alone at night, I can guarantee you won't be able to fight, Who really should Kiera fear, Is it ? or........oh dear.
Let me start by saying that when I first read the synopsis for Vampire Shift I was a little leery. I mean it's talking about police work, crime scenes, murder investigations, the main chic is a cop...To say that my Urban Fantasy radar was going off is a bit of an understatement.
More like there was a four alarm siren in my head, bleeding my brain through my ears, screaming Don't do this to yourself!! You don't like Urban Fantasy/CSI type books!
But....I gave it a go anyways...and it was AWESOME!!
Ok so this is NOT another one of those UR genre books. Nope you don't find yourself sucked into a world of boring police paperwork, trying to solve a murder, while the big bad heroine chic runs around kicking butt, and saving the world. Don't ask me why but those kinds of book tend to bore me half to death...Chinese water torture might even be more preferable in those cases.
In fact this "big bad chic" gets her butt handed to her on more than one occasion;)
Vampire Shift will leave you on the edge of your seat, gripping your Kindle. No emotions are left behind here. Tim O'Rourke makes sure to paint a picture that will not only make you swoon for his characters, but leave you utterly TERRIFIED of the dark. Jumping every time the cats start stampeding through the house in the middle of the night. Even for the not-at-all-religious wishing you had a bottle of holy water & a crucifix to sleep with. Maybe even praying for one;)
Keira's character is well done and fleshed out. YES she has a tough girl facade. YES she is basically a mess with a death wish at times. But it works for her. I love that she is all snark and attitude slaps in the face, even after she finds out that she is up against things of nightmares, that can very well kill you. I laughed out loud on more then one occasion at her comments while she was seconds from having teeth sank into her. The best way for me to describe her is Buffy the Vampire Slayer. Which would explain why I love Keira...because I mean who doesn't love Buffy?
There are parts throughout the book that you might think to yourself "Wow that was random. Why did I need to know that?
PAY ATTENTION PEOPLE I assure that Mr. O'Rourke doesn't just go throwing random, unnecessary thoughts of filler in there. Every last detail comes back around full circle. Taking you on twists and turns you never could have pictured. Taking the most insignificant, barely there characters, and turning them into OMG moments. Do yourself a favor. Stray away from the usual Paranormal Romance and jump into this dangerous world, where the humans are reminded that vampires are not friends. Where vampires are reminded that they are monsters, a creation of all things evil and chill inducing.
That's right kids...these vampires DON'T sparkle....and I loved every minute they tried to scare the pee out of me!
Vampire Shift is the first novel in the Kiera Hudson Series. Kiera is a 20 year old constable who recently graduated from the Police Academy. Unwilling to seem like she was hard to deal with and inflexible when it comes to duty stations, Kiera agrees to take a job in the remote village of The Ragged Edge. Kiera has a gift of noticing things that others can’t see which is basically saying that she’s got a sixth sense in discovering things that may be important in solving a case. Who needs CSI when you have Kiera’s abilities to work with? Kiera is also on a mission to find out what happened to her mother who seemingly vanished into thin air 3 years before.
Kiera is an interesting character in that she openly walks into a situation where she is over her head and ends up dealing with things that she couldn’t have imagined before taking the duty station. There are mysteries surrounding the disappearances of other constables stationed at The Ragged Edge, as well as the fact that someone appears to be desecrating graves of the recently deceased. Kiera, however, truly believes that her “Gift” will allow her to solve the mysteries so that she can move onto the more important task of finding out what happened to her mother.
Kiera ends up with the late shift, affectionately called The Vampire Shift. Her coworkers Sergeant Murphy, Constable Potter, and Constable Luke Bishop all seem to be hiding something and later we learn a few more mysteries which Tim reveals piece meal and I will not spoil. It was not much of a shocker to learn who Kiera would end up having a romantic interlude with.
I’m so very glad that I found the time to dive into this series as I have been putting it off for months now. Thanks to Tim for sharing these books with me! Vampire Shift is such an interesting concept and the differences between vampires is profound. Readers will be kept in their seats as this is a fast read that goes by quicker than you can imagine. I can’t wait to jump into Vampire Wake soon!
This book was appalling. I felt my brain melting as I attempted to read it. I made it to 52% before it hit the DNF pile so my review is based only on what i read.
My major issues with the story; * Police officers get stationed in Ragged Cove then go missing- never to be seen again but the police force as a whole (scotland yard/whatever) do not investigate, instead send out more officers to work there. * Luke & the other officers claim not to want any other people/police officers to get hurt but they keep letting officers get stationed with them and then make them only work the in the night when it is the most dangerous. * 20 murders & 30 missing people but apparently a police task force of 4 people are left to deal with it?! * People who live in the village do not leave after all these murders & disappearances. Worse than that.. people with children do not flee to safety with their loved ones.. come on! I do not know a single parent that would live in a place so dangerous.. graves are robbed, children go missing & children die - all the time. The village as a whole think it is vampires.. so why would people stay to be used as chew toys/vampire fodder/a snack?!
Also.. how come a known vampire (cannot say who without a spoiler) can wear a crucifix & another can touch/hold one but the other vampire exploded when it touched it?!
A little dark, a little edgy, VAMPIRE SHIFT by Tim O’Rourke is a very different take on vampires and their origins. Meet Kiera, a young constable on her first assignment in the tiny village of The Ragged Cove. One day in and she knows something is not right, but the town police force merely smirks. When leaving town becomes impossible, Kiera is about to enter a world of darkness and fangs, with a mysterious dark angel by her side.
Mysterious deaths, holy water and dark secrets are about to meet the tenacious Kiera Hudson, but will Kiera find she is falling for the enemy in the disguise of fellow constable Luke Bishop or will she find she has more in common with him than her worst nightmares could have dreamed up?
This one sped by, peppered with a sense of impending doom and expectation for some great revelations!
Not a recent release, this one proves that good storytelling never goes out of style!

I've wanted to read this series for quite some time now, it was the book covers that appealed to me - big time! I've not long invested in the books and as you can see, I've just read the first one...
Wow... what can I say, totally unexpected and I thoroughly enjoyed it! Kiera Hudson is something else... mind you, so is Luke (grins)
I love the quick and easy way this book is written, I love the way the words just dance into my brain and stay there... no having to read a line twice, just plain simple words that I can completely comprehend.
The storyline took me by surprise, I didn't expect so much action and adventure as quick as what I got... it also had me guessing in so many places... and I can happily say I was wrong with just about all my ideas!!!
I was gutted in some places, Kiera's history kind of touched me and then the little old lady from the Inn, she was fabulous...
Anyway, I think that this book is just a stepping stone into a series that I believe I am going to completely enjoy, quick easy reads and wonderfully captivating... Tim O'Rourke, you have truly surprised me!
First, I'd like to thank the author for sending me this for review.
The book was dark and mysterious and a fantastic read. Tim O’Rourke’s version of “vampires” in this book was very unique. Obviously, I don’t want to spoil the surprise for anyone planning on reading the book, but it certainly wasn’t something I’d heard before. And yet it went really well with the story and I didn’t feel like I was reading something I’d heard a thousand times. This book was surrounded in mystery. I never quite knew what was going on and every now and then when I thought I did...BAM....something else would happen and all my thoughts and conclusions would be thrown out the window. It was very intense, but I found I liked it and it kept me reading—eager to know what was going on.
I really liked Keira. Her “gift” made thing interesting and I’m still eager to know more about it. At its base it’s a very instinct based gift, but all things considered in this book, I think it’s potentially going to be poor and have a bigger purpose as the trilogy continues. Keira was a real go-getter. Fresh out of the academy, but eager and confidant in what she was doing. She missed nothing, picking up and seeing this most others wouldn’t notice. Nothing escaped her notice and she put two and two together so well. She was such a great all round character, and I generally wanted the best for her in this book; she was someone I enjoyed following on her tale.
Oh, how I hated Murphy and Potter in the beginning. Honestly, the way they treated Keira at first and their attitudes towards police work made me wanna sock it to them! They seemed to be nothing but cruel jerks yet in the end I was surprised by the people they actually turned out to be. Potter’s still an arrogant jerk, but there’s something about him, and it may have to do with what he does for Keira at the very end of the book (not saying what) that makes me think there’s more to him. I don’t necessarily feel like the relationship between Keira and Luke was rushed, because in most ways it wasn’t. There was a connection between them that they both felt and they were attracted to one another, but occasionally I’d feel like certain things between them were a tad forced. I’m also not quite sure that the feelings of “love” between them are plausible. They didn’t know each other well enough to feel that way, nor it they really spend that much time together. Like and lust I’d totally believe is accurate, but maybe not love. Still, I think my feelings about that could change in future books. They defiantly have the potential to have something really real and I’ll be watching for that in the rest of the trilogy.
Vampire Shift is an edgy tale full of suspense and mystery. The storyline is engaging and the characters interesting. This is a great start to a fantastic new series, and with so many questions left at the end, I for one can’t wait for the second instalment!
This entire review has been hidden because of spoilers.
The hobbit has done it! (for those of you who don't know, I call Tim - THe Hobbit ---- He loves it! at least that's what I like to believe lolz) What a wild magic spooktacular ride he sent me on. Not down a rabbit hole but into the bowels of uhh... England or the Shire or some other hobbity place.
I could say the UK but what's the difference between that, Britain, and England? Yeah.... Ummmm.... so to the SHIRE we go!!
We meet this girly who's name is Kiera who kinda has a mentalist quality going for her. At least that's what I think. I've never seen the show but I'm going to assume it's like the same thing. Kiera is a cop who can pick up on the tiniest tid bit and solve a muderers and they both are probably pretty hot (i've seen commercials!) and you know have good hair and get all the girls... but with Kiera she only wants one dude and he's a cop too but dah dah dah dah.... there might be something else going on with him that I'm not allowed to talk about and it would wreck the plot but now I've got you interested.
So, girly girl just graduated from the police academy over in the Shire and is sent to go hob nob it with the good ol boys over in Ragged Cove uhh.... Shireland. And she goes down there and nothing electronic really works right but her ipod is full of girl power pop music (what?!! No Beyonce?!! TIM! We better have Beyonce in the next one!!).
And then things go all CSI cuz THERE'S BEEN A MURDER and the rollar coaster that is the vampire shift starts
The story is pretty original. Especially the people that weren't vampires but something else. I can't tell you about that either because it would be a big spoiler bunny.
And there were some spooky parts and big loud thunderclaps and loads of sharp teeth that go bite bite bite!
There was even some swoon!
I KNOW!! Who'da thunk it!! I was impressed with that. I always wonder if guys can write swoon and Tim did quite well at it.
I will warn you though... the ending is quite a cliffy but fear not because book 2 is already out.
Can't wait to read more!
Things that I thought of when I read this book: Jeepers Creepers scary dude that killed people in corn fields Vincent Price in "The Bat" Superman (that's right TIM! I saw that!!) Star Trek "First Contact"
Things I liked about Keira She didn't cuss a lot. I don't know why but I like it when authors don't have a ton of cussing She thought for herself. She wasn't afraid to ask for help She drove a cool car but wasn't a car fanatic She wasn't a badass but if given the chance she totally could be
Things that I enjoyed about reading VAMPIRE SHIFT I liked all the little subtle hints to figuring out the story What the other non-vampire thinga thing was soo clever Now with WINGS! very cool! The old lady mom chick at the Inn. The girl in the graveyard. And all the actiony stuff. Most awesome!
Okay...so O'Rourke nailed me between the eyes with his "Black Hill Farm" novel and a book blogger I follow raved about Shift so I thought I'd take a chance on yet another vamp book! Wow. And that doesn't even cover it! O'Rourke is British and his writing style/diction/syntax is really different and so refreshing for an American who is pretty steeped in my own country's works. He doesn't explain any of the vernaculars that are so common place in the UK and as a reader I was definitely along for the literary ride!
Kiera is a young woman fresh out of police school and assigned to an arduous post in the middle of nowhere along a stretch of creepy coastline. O'Rourke sets the stage for us to see the misery of her surroundings perfectly and as a reader I wanted her to get the heck out of Dodge! I love the way Kiera is insightful and sees details others don't. It deepens the mystery of her surroundings and what is happening wonderfully. I loved the plot. Although somewhat slow in the beginning, about 30% through the novel the plot twists arrive and the action takes hold and doesn't stop until the shattering crescendo at the end. There were several little surprises sprinkled throughout that endeared me to O'Rourke, pegging me to the pages until I was finished. He's excellent at telling a mystery and allowing a slow unravel as the story progresses. The ending leaves the reader puzzling over three main points that I will answer by purchasing the next installment, of course! I recommend this for readers who enjoy the following: mystery, intrigue, paranormal, light romance and vamps that definitely do not sparkle! Ha!
This book started off great! I was intrigued and really enjoying the feel and suspense of the book. All of a sudden, near the end, maybe 85% in, it went waaaaay down hill. The love story (if you can call it that) fell completely flat. I felt nothing, absolutely nothing between the 2 characters. Then, he dropped the "L" word....really??? You've known this chick all of like 1 week!? Ridiculous. Once that happened, I was done! Not only that, but there are so many questions left and I don't mind being left hanging, or having a question or 2, but this one left me with more questions than when I started the book and that is huge pet peeve of mine! I don't understand what the "hollows" are, or why the vampyrus are ALL men, minus the 1 woman that all of a sudden sprouts wings at the end? Where do they "come from?" How were they created? Why does anyone stay in that town at all if they are being attacked by vampires? Why does going back to the hollows make the craving for human blood magically disappear? The entire thing just made no sense. There are other questions, as well, but they would be spoilers to mention so I won't go there. Bummer, too, because I think the book had real potential, and maybe all of these questions are addressed and answered in the rest of the books...?
So at about 1am, I was really sleepy but my head is buzzing with the murder-mystery ravaging the Ragged Cove much like the classic Sherlock Holmes movie. Fast forward to 1:30am and my eyes are really ggetting sleepy and just when I though I could finally put a bookmark on the page and drift to sleep, O'Rourke would pull another number on me and would jolt me to wakefulness more effective than coffee.
So I've finally given this series a chance. I've been seeing this book's cover on my friends' shelves very often lately, but paid it no attention 'cause I thought the cover's a little too over-the-top (and cheesy). BUT, my curiosity got the best of me so I gave it a try and was reminded: Never judge a book by its cover.
Vampire Shift is about a 20-year-old police constable Kiera Hudson, the MC, who is recently assigned to investigate a very strange town called The Ragged Cove. There, she met her new colleagues, Murphy, Potter, and the eye-catching constable Luke Bishop. Kiera has a gift of seeing what other people can't---not like having a third-eye sort of gift, but more of being a very keen observer; that she notices every clue there is behind a crime scene that other investigators miss. With that said, Kiera is fully confident that she can and will solve the mystery behind the murders in The Ragged Cove. That is, until she found out that the answer to the said mystery is quite the opposite of everything she've concluded.
The story was really UNpredictable, at least for me. During the first few pages, I was rolling my eyes because I thought I have figured everything out by that time. I thought I was one step ahead of the main character in solving the mystery---which is, as you know, very annoying because nothing seems surprising anymore---but, boy, I was so wrong. I even came to a point wherein, like the main character, I don't know who and what to believe in anymore. Like, I'm doubting every character in the book because I was so clueless as who the culprit/s are. Another thing that I liked the most about this book, apart from the twist and turns of the story, is that every question I've had while reading it were answered; there were completely no loose ends. Except, of course, the cliff hanger in the end (but that's okay because there are sequels for that). And, I must point out that I liked Potter more than Luke, just sayin'. :P
So, if you haven't given this book a chance yet, then trust me my fellow booknerd, that this series is not to be missed!
Deserves more than FIVE stars!!! As I have been patiently waiting for this release I will be honest, this review is bittersweet for me. One the up side I absolutely LOVED this book, one the down side I finished it in just a few hours and now it's over. ;) It's not that it is a short book or a novella, it was that it caught me at the first few lines and I could hardly put it down from there! I stayed up till 11:30 pm because I just HAD to know how it ended. Vampire Shift was thought to be released on Amazon.com on Sunday, June 26, 2011 but to my surprise I got a message from the author that is was up and ready for download! This is not your run of the mill vampire story by any means. There are murders, and mysteries, twist and turns throughout. The main character, Kiera Hudson, is a fresh out of the Academy cop in the southwest of England, who volunteers to go to the town of The Ragged Cove, a town so remote she loses radio signal in her car the closer she came to the town, no phone signal, closed signs on most of the little shops and stores that line the cobblestone streets, and on first inspection not a soul around. Oh and also a town where other cops that have been sent to work there have gone mysteriously missing! O'Rourke left nothing missing in my imagination of this quaint little town. His descriptions are so thorough, and the story plays out beautifully. On arriving to The Ragged Cove, Kiera pops in to the police department to meet her co-workers, one a hottie, one a arrogant jerk, and another a grandfatherly type. Not soon after saying her hello's she tags along to a murder call and gets her first taste of the craziness going on in this quiet little town. As the story progresses Kiera discovers things about her family she never thought possible and finds love she wasn't looking for. Things are not always as they seem in The Ragged Cove and you will be on the edge of your seat wanting to know more the further along you read. This is a great beginning to a Kiera Hudon trilogy that will not disappoint!
What a wonderful start to a new series as I tend to get bored with the whole vampire thing after awhile as it has been done to death. Kiera is a green police woman with little experience and her new posting is nothing that the academy could have prepared her for. She is attracted to police officer Luke and is determined to fit in but she is drawn into a world that she never knew existed. Something terrible is happening in the Ragged Cove and Kiera will stop at nothing to solve the murders. In a town full of secrets and intrigue, Kiera will do whatever it takes to solve the mystery but in doing so will put her own life in jeopardy. A story with a bit of everything, romance, suspense and lots of supernatural elements with plenty of twists and turns to keep you guessing. I am so looking forward to following Kiera's journey in the next book.
There are times when writing a review is harder than usual. You realize the author is a real person, not a name on a cover and what you're going to say may hurt her/him.
Vampire Shift is an indie and I'm ready to give some slack to self published books. The authors often do not have access to editing and proofreading (and is unfortunately evident).
Kiera is Holmes (sometimes almost literally) in a skirt dealing with vampires and vampire bats (hey, it's different!:) rather than hounds. World building is weak, the story and mostly the characters lack depth. The plot and its twisting are unbelievable and the heroine's mysterious mother is confusing.
I wish Mr O'Rourke all the best in his career. But I do not think I'll be buying any other Kiera Hudson book.
Here's what I enjoyed about this book...we went back to basics. Vampires that are like bats, vampires that are scared of crucifixes and holy water destroys them! BUT not only that he threw in some modern twists to these age old vampire stories we just Love to read! What are they? Well pick up the book and find out! There's a mystery in here with twist and turns and just when you have it all figured out the author surprises you. And just when you think you'll get the ending you hope for a decision is made that you didn't see coming. Sometimes the best answer is "no." great job on the book I look forward to reading the next one!
Sometimes I think Kiera was to nice to Luke I mean I think I would demand where Luke went when she was being attacked. The rest of the story was pretty good other than that she didn't whoop his butt for what happened. I am curious to know more it kind of lift on a mini cliff hanger I want to know what happened to her mom like she does.
At first, I was really enjoying this book. It reminded me of Hush Hush and Supernatural. (Two amazing things) I mean, it was weird, but weird is good. Sadly, it got a little TOO weird, and I found myself cringing at just about everything. It went from good to bad pretty quickly! Plus, the writing style got annoying after a while. But hey, if you're wanting to read it, it's free on kindle and it never hurts to give a book a try!!
Let me start out by saying that the reason the book didn't receive 4.5 or even 5 heart rating from me, is all because of the Keely Beresford. This is the first time I listen to an audio book, where I haven't already read the book - and Keely's narrating was just too over the top and childish for me. Her narrating reminds me of parents reading to their children, and doing those over the top different voices for different characters. Granted it works when you're about to tug your child into bed, and want to finish their day with a nice bed time story. For me it did not work at all - it was actually rather annoying, and it stole the attention from the plot. Some of the chapters that were really suspense filled made me laugh, because of the way she read it out. Such a shame!
Aside from the horrible narrating, the plot is great! This is not your run of the mill sparkling vampires, who forsake their very nature to save humans. Nuh-uhh! These vampires are dark, twisted and live (if that's what they do), to spread terror into the very humans who's blood they crave. The world building is great and the author pays a great attention to detail. Through this, he managed to create an angst filled setting. Everyone was a suspect. Without carrying around a big obvious sign on the forehead, the good guys seemed to be the bad guys, and with constant twists and turns being thrown into the mix it was so hard to guess who I should be cheering on.
One of the thing I feel like I often criticise authors for, is their character building and development. This is one of the rare cases where I have no critique. None at all. All the characters, protagonists and antagonists alike, were all richly formed and felt three-dimensional. All of them - even the secondary characters, felt whole and I had no problem connecting with them and despite the annoying Keely Beresford, I did at times feel like a part of this world.
Now this book is advertised as a paranormal romance story, which is almost misleading. I mean sure there's the paranormal aspect, which is covered by the vampires. Then there's the romance, which is supposedly covered by the typical man and woman instant love aspect. However, that's the only part that doesn't feel like it's explored completely. I actually think this is one of the first times I read a romance book written by a man, but as I recently read one where the male author nailed it, this leaves a lot to be desired. It's almost like the author distances his work from it, even though he's the one leading his characters towards it. Sure the "L" word is mentioned, but it's almost like the characters doesn't even believe it themselves. It's hard to describe, but it's like one of those really bad films where the actor reads out the script, but there's no feeling behind it. That's how the romance feels in this book.
However, I was greatly impressed by the author’s creativity in bringing his world alive and the plot would probably have kept me on the edge of my seat, if I had been reading the book instead of listening to it. However, as I purchased the 6 books in the series in an audio bundle, I will be listening to them all. Time will tell whether or not the narrating voice improves!
new adult paranormal romance. Ok in places, but none of it come together for me. There are a lot of books in the series but neither the storyline in this book, the style, or the characters grabbed me. I skimmed a great deal andf that is never a good sign.
So I bought this book a few years ago now and only just got round to reading it.
And I’ll be honest with you, it’s wasn’t that bad it’s a good start to a series with action and a little bit of mystery - what else can you ask for... ohhh I know - vampires!
I definitely think if you like them three things this is the book for you!
I’m looking forward to reading the next one in the series
I needed something quick for a reading challenge and this was certainly quick. Mainly because the writing was very thin. I can suspend my belief - this is a vampire story afterall - but to have a character and story take place in the space of 3 days (during which she is nearly killed on at least 4 occassions and falls hoplessly in love)? I don't think so.
My other main problem are the mystical beings that form the centre of the story - they look like people, but have wings and can fly and then hide their wings when they're not using them - no, they're not angels - they have fangs. Guess what guys???? Vampire Bats. Meh.
Vampire Bats that live in caverns under the earth, they can live overground, but when the need for blood gets too much, they go back underground until the feeling wears off. If they do drink human blood they get addicted and the humans they drink die and of course come back as vampires.
The heroine of the story gets sent to The Ragged Cove (yes, that really is the name of the village she's sent to), a place with no mobile phone reception - or any working phones. She's a rookie police officer and village is plagued by disappearances and grave robbing.
To start with it reminded me a lot of Hot Fuzz, except it wasn't funny.
I'd rather watch Hot Fuzz any day of the week than read anymore of this series.

So, today I finished reading this book, it took a few days since I only read during commute to my different jobs, but I swear more than once I almost missed my bus-stop because I was so buried in the book. The characters were so easy-to-get-to-know... the paranormal stuff in it was simply credible and the writing was easy on the mind. I must say I honestly enjoyed this book and will read the second one in the series very soon, I just need to complete some buddy reads with my group before I get there. I also want to read the Black Hill series by this author, now. He seems to write just the way I like. The characters are easy, and I've made them now, my personals friends, I despise the same people they do, I fear the same guys and I love them. The adventures are in line with one another and you can easily follow through the steps of this group of people as you can follow my steps through the day.
So, I had to give it 4 stars because I read the entire book in one sitting (the book isn't that long but still). I liked all of the characters and I was definitely trying to figure out the mystery behind The Ragged Cove. It definitely was NOT predictable and had lots of twists and turns. I think it's a great start to the series and I am looking forward to getting to know everyone better, especially Kiera. I think there is definitely more behind what she "sees" that everyone else misses and I certainly feel invested in finding out what happened to her mother.
