Camilla d’Errico is a product of her split heritage, Italian and Canadian rolled into one: Italian fiestiness, Canadian politeness, and an early addiction to Saturday morning cartoons, comics and manga. Growing up she was more often doodling sexy damsels and dragons on her textbooks than reading them. In 1998 when Camilla first attended her first San Diego Comic Con she realised that a 9–5 day job would kill her and this was what she wanted to do. Thanks to her relentless energy, dedication, and just enough sleep deprivation, she has followed her dream of working creatively for a living.

Camilla’s unique style continues to be in demand and her client list includes Dark Horse Comics, Image Comics, Random House, Tokyopop, Hasbro, Disney, Sanrio, Neil Gaiman and she also works with video game and movie companies on character development. Her own characters and properties, Tanpopo and Helmetgirls, are loved by fans and followers and now inspire Cosplay costumes. She has successfully merchandised and licensed her beautiful artwork across a variety of categories: clothing, stationery and gift, accessories, art prints, etc. and continues to expand her licensing program. Her emotive and eloquent paintings have propelled her to the top of the ranks of the New Contemporary art movement, and she is represented by Opera Gallery of New York.

Camilla can’t live without Holbein’s “DUO” water-soluble oils, green tea lattes, Hello Kitty merchandise, and her daily fix of manga and anime.

Ah, reading random graphic novels at work. I picked this up because I was curious to see what the circ stats were on a comic made to promote a second-rate teen pop star, but the comic was actually not as bad as it could have been.

This is more than a shameless advertisement for Avril Lavigne. In fact, it's barely about Lavigne at all. It's about a teenage girl who happens to love Avril Lavigne, but the plot revolves around a troublemaking demon she ordered off the internet that grants wishes.

Like the Monkey's Paw of yore, her wishes come true in the worst ways possible. Bad things happen to make the good things she wants possible, and she doesn't end up getting what she really wanted after all.

She dies at the end. She commits suicide off a bridge in a dark turn that I wasn't expecting from a comic that I expected to be garbagey and lame.

This doubtless would have been better without the Avril Lavigne aspect. What might be a quality comic with vibrant, engaging art was ruined by having to shill for some dumb singer. I wouldn't read it again or recommend it to people who aren't fans of Lavigne, but I will look for more by this artist.

Teenage me loved this book alot more than 28 years old me does.

The best thing about this book is the artwork, it's beautiful and in full colour throughout.

The story is much darker than I remember. This follows right on from the last one, Hana is waiting to see how the wish about her being popular in school is going to come true. And it does come true but in a pretty horrific way. This leaves Hannah depressed and she ends up throwing herself off a bridge, just after she finally manages to talk to Avril in real life but she has no idea as Avril is cosplaying.

I'm not really sure if she's dead at the end or not. This is a very bleak way to get across 'be careful what you wish for'. And I just don't like Hana, she's so depressing. I'm not really sure what the point of Avril being in this story was, I guess it was just to sell copies to fans.

I guess teens will like this, they will be able to relate to Hana more, I certainly did like this book when I was younger. But adults should probably avoid, although the artwork is worth taking a peek at.

YUCK!

I was expecting something else from this OEL manga. I mean, because of one stupid girl there are four deaths and a man who loses his mind. I'm not sure I like the concept that other people are paying for the mistakes of one cretin girl.

I disliked Hana in volume #1 as well, but here she shows her worst. I have the feeling that she wastes her wishes for unimportant things and she can't grow a spine to try and make things better. She just leaves herself falling.

After the tragedies she finds a friend and a possible group of people where she could belong to but it's too late. There's no hope left for her.

I didn't like the answer she gives when she's asked why she's hurting her classmates and her teacher. She says that she hurt them because people always hurt people. YAHOO!! Pessimism at its worst!

The art, who kind of saved the first volume, changed and I disliked it. The new artist tried to imitate Camilla d'Errico's style but he failed.

Sigh! What a bad ending!

Great actually.

Personally I think this series would be more positively remembered/ actually remembered if there was another volume.

To be honest I think there should've been a volume 3, then what happened to Hana would've probably made more sense to all of these confused first-time readers.
A volume 3 would've given the ending fairly better pacing and I think generally it would be better regarded. I think Hana's imaginary Avril Lavigne should've had at least a bit more screen(page)time. I think the concept of Hana having an imaginary version of Avril in her head which she uses to cope with her current reality is really interesting and oddly relatable (\at least for me. I did the exact same thing when I was younger with the only difference being it was an imaginary older brother).
I also think there should've been perhaps more emphasis or from the beginning there should've been a stronger thread of specifically suicidal thoughts or ideations for Hana as that would probably would have made it much easier for much more younger/ juvenile readers to understand what Hana ends up doing at the end.

TL:DR, Highly enjoyable, some pacing issues before the end makes it slightly harder to enjoy for a lot of readers. Still recommend this book (´• ω •`).

Reviewing both volumes together as I read them one after the other.

I've been an Avril Lavigne fan since her first album and I feel like I definitely read these graphic novels online forever ago, but I didn't remember anything about them. They were actually so surprisingly dark, which I was not expecting at all and I actually respect the decision to write them this way because it could have been such an easy and probably more profitable choice to make a basic, happy story. I liked the artwork most of the time, it was very dream-like and the character design was cool, especially the demon.

The main character Hana is interesting as she is obviously very mentally unwell, but also just blatantly unlikeable for the first part of the story. She does grow and have a character arc, I'm not sure how satisfying it is to witness as a reader but it's definitely there. Avril as a character worked well within this story as Hana's conscience - it was a clever way to integrate her into the story.

Make 5 Wishes is not the story I was expecting, but it was definitely an entertaining read.

I’m actually so angry that I read this.
The synopsis and advertising make this seem like such a fun and cute graphic novel about Avril Lavigne, but it’s not. I feel like they used her name just to drag in the fans.

This is not a fun story. It’s dark and horrible and unnecessary and I’m upset that I was drawn into this because of false and misleading advertising.

Trigger Warning: for pretty much everything: suicide, cyber impersonations / bullying, murder, divorce, some family abuse, depression, suicidal thoughts

Just ...avoid this if you can.

This is the most hilariously emo thing I have ever read. Very of it's time, but I had fun reading it. Could have done without all of the r words though.

(Will use the same review for both books)

This two books follows Hana, a lonely girl, whose life at school and at home are not what she wanted them to be, so to get out of her reality, she imagines a world where her best friend is the famous single Avril Lavigne. Avril will be like a Guardian Angel for Hana throughout the story, trying to keep her from doing something bad and guiding her to practice good actions instead. But, there’s always one but, right? Hana one day finds a website that grants you 5 wishes, and what kid or person can resist that kind of temptation? So Hana buys those 5 wishes and meets Romeo, a demon that will grant her wishes, that in the end...turned out to be more dark and deadly that Hana ever expected them to be.
When I first bought this books, I thought the story would be light, adorable and with a nice end, but their where the complete opposite of that. The illustrations where incredible and transmitted the exact feelings the characters where having, the story was so much dark and profound that I was expecting, dealing with lots of heavy themes, such as depression, treason, dementia, death and suicide, that my mouth fell open at the end!
Such a powerful story locked in two books, where Avril is the good Angel, and Romeo the devil in the other hear.
Just be aware that this books, although they might look cute, they have lots of triggers and shouldn’t be read lightly!

I don't know what it was but this second volume just didn't seem to have the same magic in it as the first. This full color manga was still beautiful, and the artwork stunning, but just didn't give me the same feeling as when I read the first part. Most of the story was told in the first book as well, so this book just felt like a wrap up from start to finish. The ending was darker than I expected, (no happy endings here), with just the moral that you should be happy for what you have and grateful that you're alive.

The true nature of the demon becomes known when it reveals who it's granted wishes for in the past, like Marie Antoinette and Faust. Hana wanted her parents marriage to get better, but he grants it by having them split up totally and each one finding happiness separately, later.

The demon causes an explosion that kills two students and a teacher. Hana is the only one in the room to survive it. Other things happen that are bad, including the slightly inconclusive ending of the book which really, totally and truly, sucks.

This was an absolutely dark, horrible book that really accomplishes nothing other then push the messages about not trusting anyone and no matter how bad things are at the moment, they could be a lot worse.

The Dresden Files have a more positive outlook than this book. Best advice; don't read it. Or the first one, either.

One star lost for the ambiguous ending. I'm not sure if they had planned a third book (I suspect not), but I felt it robbed the book of meaning in exchange for a pretentious "you decide for yourself what happens".

Well, then, in my ending, Hana finds out she's half kraken, and rises to devour the world.

Anyway, the ending was definitely weak, as was the motivation for her to do what she did ("He tricked me! I was the Avril Lavigne".) Girl, you specifically SAID the real one. Seeing yourself cosplaying as Avril does not, under any circumstance, count as meeting the "real Avril".

Bad, shoddy writing and so, one star less.

I liked this, but it's more shaky than the first volume, and the annoying Avril factor gets much more irritating. Also, there's the fact that I found out the artist was not invited back to do the second volume and so they had other folks approximate her work, which is just kind of nasty. I need to look at them again to see the different, but...not a good thing for the series. It also gets very dark in this volumes (with fires and people dying) so I was a bit taken aback, though in the end I liked the increasing darkness.

I was actually quite surprised by good this little story was. It struck me in an enlightening manner on several occasions. I didn't quite get why Avril Lavignes was idolised so much, why there was a write about her life, or why she was named in the title. Most likely it is shameless commercialism, but the touching beauty of the tale seems unable to be driven by stark crassness.

You get 5 wishes. Anything. But it's not as easy as closing your eyes and wishing of anything. There is a dark side, an evil one. What started out as good has turned out awful, leaving Hannah sadder then ever before, with only one choice left to make.
