Donald J. Sobol was an award-winning writer best known for his children's books, especially the Encyclopedia Brown mystery series. Mr. Sobol passed away in July of 2012.
3/9/22: I would rarely not finish an elementary book, like it or not, they are so short that I would just power through it. This one though, was just little snippets of dumb criminals. Some were 10-12 sentences long and some were just 2 or 3 sentences, but all were just silly and I read two chapters, 48 pages and just had to stop. I was expecting the nosalgic Encyclopedia Brown mysteries of my youth, but this isn't that. I will be putting this one in a free little library somewhere and passing it along to maybe kids who might enjoy that sort of thing. I won't rate it because it is totally me, not the book.
This type of book was very new to me since it doesn't only have one story, but it has lots of different stories. The stories in this book were crimes, that were shortened and simplified. The crime stories that Donald J. Sobol chose aren't just ordinary crimes, but it was strange crimes, just like the title of the book. Also, the stories are written so that the crimes sounds interesting and funny, even adults can enjoy this book just to have a little laugh. The short stories of the crime are around 2 sentences to 2 paragraphs long, so I recommend this book for people that are busy since they can just read a whole story within a minute.
I thought it was interesting how Melvin use sally toothbrush because it is nasty for someone to use the same toothbrush. This shows how close the two characters are. They have a very unique relationship.
This is one of those great mmystery books like all of the clue ones where the reader has to guess what the answer to the mystery was. I loved reading these types of books growing up and sitting there trying to solve the mysteries.
There's a single "solve it yourself" mystery to start this book, then the rest of the volume consists of funny, humorous, offbeat crimes that really appealed to the rather weird sense of humor of this one-time kid. (And, quite frankly, they are still pretty funny.)
It was okay. There was only one "Mystery" with the answer in the back - the rest of the book was snippits of "strange but true crimes" from around the world. Most of the snippits were very, very brief and only contained enough information about the crime to be humorous.
I loved this book. It was so fun to read all the crazy crimes people come up with and actually do. It would be a bit difficult for young kids to understand but older ones would love it.
A great childrens series about a younf boy detective. He solves the mysteries that go on in his town with the help of his friends and insight from his father the police officer.
A collection of snippets, and stories of true crime are covered in ten chapters. The title of each individual chapter gives the reader a clue of what they are about to encounter.
