I absolutely love anthologies. I feel it gives me a great introduction to different authors. Fourteen authors have put their own twists on our much loved fairy tales. This in return gave us a perfect collection of short wonderful gems.

Although some of these stories are not genres I normally read I pretty much devoured and enjoyed them all.

I'll certainly be stalking I mean looking into quite a few of these authors and their books.

If your looking for something different that may push you into genres you don't normally try then I highly recommend this collection. Loved it.

What a fantastic collection of creatively rewritten tales. I absolutely recommend this collection to EVERYONE.

There are a few of these stories that struck a chord with me, and I want to give them specific shout outs.

Uncloaked, A Reimagining of Little Red Riding Hood by Wendy Owens
- This is a whole new spin on LRRH and I adored how the author was able to pull a well-known tale and pull it into one of my favorite worlds - Faery.

Blayze & Ash, A retelling of Beauty an the Beast by Jessica Sorenson
- this is no Disney movie people. It is emotional, raw, sad, and (other than a little magic) easy to relate to.

Priceless, The True Story of Rumpelstiltskin by Sarah J. Pepper
-Ok, I'm going to be honest, I didn't make great notes for this one, but the fact that my note attached to the end was "Oh hell yes!", you have to understand I loooooooved it I did. I just kept bad notes.

The Snow Queen Retold by Shannon Morton
-Holy F!@#. This one seriously screwed with me and I LOVED IT!

~~~ "You are slaves to the feelings evoked by words on a page." ~~~
OMG!! I AM!! How do you know that?! And that was just the prologue. The twisted wickedness evoked a lot for me, and the note at the end in my kindle? "Holy S@#$!" Yeah, that says it all.
Casting Crowns and Other Curious Things A retelling of Alice in Wonderland by Elizabeth Montgomery
- Alice in Wonderland has ALWAYS confused the crap outta me, I have never read the book and barely paid attention to the Disney version. So, I didn't expect much from this story. I was pleasantly surprised with my emotional bounty. My favorite quote:
"Tyden, well, he is my happiness. His is the smile on my face each morning. The reason I know what it feels like to be alive."
Now, if i didn't pick out a story, it doesn't mean I didn't like it. I enjoyed the ENTIRE collection. I will say, this needs to be read in spurts. I became overwhelmed trying to read it straight through, I mean, crap, it's FOURTEEN stories! You certainly get your money's worth with this one.
It's more 2.5 stars
I was expecting something more from this one... because it's a book full of retelling, how could not I?
There was something good in here, but not so much.
Unloacked 2.5 the idea was really good and original, and the stalker lycan was fantastic! But the ending was sooooo plain!
Blayze & Ash 3 it was not bad and the characters seem good but it wasn't original or really good.
Dance with me 3. It was ok.
The little mermaid 2.5 plain and boring.
Awakened 2.5 I really can't remember this one, and on my notes I written just 2.5 so... 2.5 it is!
Priceless 5 I loved this one! It's original, dark, sexy and intriguing. And the characters are good!
The Snow Queen 2.5 the idea was intersting, but the story was... meh.
Caged 3 again, the idea was original but the story was ok.
Puss in Boots 4.5 this one was good too!
Rell 3 unoriginal and really, really classic, but not too bad
Casting Crowns and other curious things 4 This one was good. I liked it!
Hansel & Gretel 4 Original and really dark. I liked it a lot!
Real Boy 2.5 I was really happy to find a Pinocchio's retelling and the idea was quite good, but again, the story wasn't so good.
Jaclyn and the Beanstalk 3 It was not too good but the idea was original and the story was intersting.
5 Crazy Ass Stars!!!!!
I've been curious to read this particular subgenre for a while so when I was presented with a chance to sign up to review for the blog tour, I jumped at it. I absolutely love what I've read from the collection. Below is a quick review of each story in the order that I've read them.
Rell by Amy Daws was a great twist on one of my all time favorite fairytales.
Caged by LP Dover gave me new perspective on Rapunzel and I got to say I like this adult version.
Awakened by Kristen Strassel was a vamped out Sleeping Beauty. It was different but I enjoyed this sexy tale.
Next Cinderella, my other all time favorite tale is Alice in Wonderland. Elizabeth Montgomery did a great job with Casting Crowns and Other Curious Things. This is my favorite in the collection so far.
I can't wait to read the other stories in this collection. I'm loving this subgenre.
Hey guys! Today I am reviewing Fairy Tale Confessions
I was so excited to receive and review this book. One because I love retelling and I was so excited to see all of the amazing ladies spin on the tales I grew up with. Secondly two of my favorite authors wrote a story for this anthology and I couldn't wait to get the chance to read them.
I came into this anthology with no knowledge about the other authors in this anthology in hopes that I would like their short stories and come out with some new books to read. Not surprisingly I have found a lot of really interesting authors to read from in the future.
Now back to this anthology. The majority of the stories are romance heavy with happy endings but there are also a few more horror driven stories. I think it was about 4 horror stories included. I really enjoyed the variety of stories and the fact that not all of the stories followed the same arc. There is at least one story in here for everyone.
When it comes to retellings I can be really picky about them. To me it's so important to be able to recognize the original story inside the retellings. Seeing the most important moments and symbolism still present while giving the story a new twist. You know the moments that define the story for you. Cinderella's glass slipper or Belle's Beast for instance.
With that being said I really felt all of the retellings treated the stories we all know really well. I was able to easily identify the stories and see the strands of the originals stories in all of the stories I read. Be it a Cinderella retelling titled Rell by Amy Daws or a really unique twist on Rumpelstiltskin.
To me the perfect short story is one that closes the story without leaving anything unsolved but yet makes you wish the story was a book or a series. Developing a full engrossing story in such a short amount of pages is so difficult but the ladies of this anthology did it so well. Each and every story resolved nicely at a great point but left me wanting more in the best kind of way. The kind where you just really want to keep reading and reading because you can't get enough of the world they built.
I decided to list the stories and tell you a little about what I thought of them individually.
Unlocked by Wendy Owens- A Red Riding Hood retelling. This is one of my favs in the collection it would be really cool to be in this world longer. So much could happen here. Lots of action and suspense Loved it!
Blayze & Ash by Jessica Sorenson - Beauty and the Beast retelling! This is my favorite Disney story so I was really worried but it was really enjoyable. I really liked the end result in this one as well as the beast aspect it was different than what we are used to.
The Little Mermaid by K.R. Wilburn - This one was really interesting the story was twisted from the story we all know and I really liked that. I liked the twists a lot. However I felt a little more explaning was need at one point of the story it got a little muddled and needed more explaining to be fully understood.
Dance with Me by Tish Thawer ~ 12 Princesses. I dont actually know much about this story before reading this other than when I was little and watched the Barbie movie. However I thought the story was good. I felt a lot of information was added to the story towards the end and it was nice but if it was longer and the story was given more pages to expand and grow that it would be an even better story.
Awakened by Kristen Strassel ~ Sleeping Beauty This one was completely unexpected for me. I wasn't expecting this twist on the story at all before hand but it made such great sense that I can't believe i didn't think of it before now. It was really interesting I liked it.
Priceless by Sarah J. Pepper ~ Rumplestiltskin Ok so I loved this one! This is the first of Sarah's works that I've read as a solo author and I adored it. I Need to pick up some of her longer works like last week! I loved this story it would be so awesome if it was expanded as well loved totally recommend.
The Snow Queen by Shannon Morton - This was really interesting and one of the darker less happy stories in the book and I really liked it. I've never read the original but I am really interested in someday actually getting to it! Really enjoyed this one.
Caged by LP Dover ~ Rapunzel This was a really great romance I really liked it. It had betrayel, heartache, love, and so much cuteness.
Puss in Boots by Brynn Myers- I really wanted to love this but I ended up just liking it. I liked the concept and where it was going until the main's secret was revealed or her gift. It just wasn't what I was expecting and made it meh for me. This is also on the dark side.
Rell by Amy Daws ~ Cinderella I'll be the first to admit that I picked up this book because I knew Amy had a story in it and I LOVE her. Needless to say I loved this retellling it was just perfect! I loved the modern feel of the story as well as Rell. Her character was just delightful.
Casting Crowns and Other Curious Things by Elizabeth Montgomery ~ Alice in Wonderland – Alice in Wonderland is one of my favorite stories ever so I was really excited for this one. I really enjoyed it there was a great twist I didn't catch until it was Bam in my face. I really enjoyed it. It would be so amazing as a longer story.
Hansel & Gretel by Cameo Renae - I liked this it was really different than what I was expecting but it made since to put it in the world. I just learned that it takes place in the same world as her novel lengthen books. Which was really interesting I'm really interested in seeing the rest of the world in her full length books.
Real Boy by Kellie Sheridan ~ Pinocchio- OMG this reminds me of one of my favorite Mangas at least the premise does and I really enjoyed it. It was both creepy and interesting. I just wish there was more.
Jaclyn and the Beanstalk by M. Clarke this one wasn't my favorite in the collection. Not because it wasn't good but because it felt like it needed more time and pages to develop the story and the plot. It kinda read like it was possible for more of the story to come later and I would 100% be into that in the future.
My favorites was Rell and Priceless
Alright so that all for this anthology it was really enjoyable for me. I recommend it to any one to pick up it was just so much fun to read. I found so many new authors I want to try out now because of it and I'm really excited.
This is a fantastic compilation of stories for those who are lovers of the fairy tale classics we have all grown up with. These authors have a wondrous knack for taking the fairy tales near and dear to our hearts and twisting them into deliciously dark or seductively romantic tales that make us fall in love with them all over again. There were paranormal twists to favorites like Sleeping Beauty and the Twelve Dancing Princesses and we even were able to fall in love with a certain sexy handsome incubus demon in the likes of Rumpelstiltskin.
I loved being able to read these stories in a new light, it was so much fun and even more exciting then the first time you hear these stories as a child. I would have to say that my stand out favorites were Priceless (Rumplestiltskin), Blayze & Ash(Beauty & the Beast) and The Snow Queen. The Snow Queen in particular was a very twisted and dark tale and excellently retold by Shannon Morton in which our evil protagonist Winter is bent on freeing people from their emotional cages by breaking their hearts. Its both intriguing and heartbreaking but Winter is so good at being evil that you can't help but admire her tenacity.
Great fun read whether you read the stories back to back or read them individually over time. You will love how these authors have given their own spin on these memorable tales!
Fairy Tale Confessions is the retelling of fourteen classic fairy tales. All of these stories were amazing. I seriously could not put down my iPad because I wanted to finish these stories. Each story made their specific fairy tale their own with a modern take on it and the authors did not disappoint. Each author made their own story unique and stand out. What I liked the best was the strong female characters. More stories need strong female characters.
I truly enjoyed them all. I will confess that this anthology introduced me to authors that I did not know about, I will definitely be checking out their works and their social media pages. I thought that each story flowed very nicely. My only complaint with the book is I wanted more. I’m greedy when it comes to stories in an anthology.
I seriously cannot wait to re-read these amazing stories. I will definitely be recommending them to friends and family. I give this anthology 5/5 Platypires.
Fairy Tale Confessions gives you fourteen entertaining twists on fairy tales we all remember from our past. It is the perfect read, especially for this time of year, for those who are fans of supernatural or paranormal elements to go along with your romances. Elements of dark also turn up in theses shorts, making them very much for the adult.
This is a must read, again – because I enjoy Autumn and Halloween, I think it is a perfect read for this time of the year. It’s hard to pick which stories stick out; I did enjoy Sarah J. Pepper’s version of Rumpelstilskin, as well as Shannon Morton’s The Snow Queen. Oh, and I adore Tish Thawer!
Go get this adventurous anthology NOW!
My Review
Wow, well where do you start writing a review for 14 books all at once! Overall this is one of the best collections of Novellas that i've read in a very long time! When i saw the authors involved i was instantly sold! Between the hilarious and romantic modern day goddess that is Amy Daws and the twisted queen of intrigue Sarah J Pepper i knew this was going to be a book to be reckoned with! However, i was surprised by the sheer quality of all of the authors involved...did i love every story? of course not but each were well written and none detracted from the overall magic that flowed through the veins of these modern day classic re-tellings.
In general i can be a little...shall we say...fussy? when it comes to remakes of classics...the story needs to either, remain completely true to the original orrr it needs to be reworked and reworded until only a whisper of a ghost remain...a nod to it shall we say!
For the purpose of this review i'm going to focus on 3 of my favourites!
Priceless- a Rumplestiltskin tale by Sarah J Pepper
“But love was complicated for everyone. Even in the sweetest of fairy tales.”
I wasn't sure where Sarah would go with this, i've loved the original since i was a little girl who devoured fairytales for breakfast so i was nervous...unfoundedly so! Sarah has reworked and remastered this story until only a tiny remnant remains! and what a remastering it is! This story will have you on the edge of your seat never quite knowing where it will end and i, for one, would love to see her turn this into a full length novel. It's stayed true to Sarah's usual sassy style but added a slither of The Brothers Grimm. Perfect.
The Snow Queen Retold by Shannon Morton
Shannon was a bit of an unknown quantity to me, i'd heard of her but never actually read anything she'd written before...that's going to be something i rectify asap. I adored this story! the author gets inside of your head and paints a picture of humanity at its worst. This story is dark and twisted and in my opinion...bloody brilliant.
Rell By Amy Daws
Ohhh Ms Daws i loved it! You reached into my chest and stroked my heart while i clenched my fist. I'll freely admit that Amy is one of my ''go to'' authors, i see her name on something and scream 'Take my money' This woman has a way of charming even the most cynical reader, she incorporates humour and love, with a cheeky slice of lust and seduction on the side. I've given up really knowing what to expect with this lady! each book she releases just gets better and better but with Rell...this is something different.
Don't even think about not one clicking on this beauty! The collection has something for everyone...although, perhaps stick to the originals when it comes to bedtime stories....these are definitely adult only!
Do you believe in fairy tales?
Is it all magical happy ending?
Princesses in disguises,
Evil-doers in disguise,
and princes in disguise.
Fairy tale Confessions is a modern twist of fairy tales we grew up with.
I give this 4 Cat's Tales Up, While I enjoyed some of the tales, there were other that weren't my taste and that's okay. You can't like all fairy tales.
I spend most of my Meow MEOW MEOW thoughts about the fairy tales that I truly enjoyed. Check out the link to my blog where I have clip arts :-)
http://sassycatsbooksreview.blogspot....
MEOW . . . MEOW . . . MEOW
This fairy tale anthology was a fun mixture of the fairy tales we grew up with with a modern twist. I wish I could talk about all the fairly tale that were in this anthology but some were tales I've never heard of and others were just not my taste. But the ones I'm going to talk about are Blayze & Ash (Beauty and the Beast fairy tale), Rell (Cinderella fairy tale), and Caged (Rapunzel fairy tale) those are the one that stood out to me.
The retold of Beauty and the Beast, Blayze and Ash had a interesting twist in the whole BEAST aspect. Even more so of how to break the "CURSE", I like that the characters had their own sad pasts. It what brought Blayze and Ash close together, but everyone paints Blayze the bad guy but I honestly think he was simply misunderstood. For Ash she saw that and trusted her judgment until the EPIC party that Blayze always hosts take a dark turn. The ending was surprising and Ash's love for Blayze shows love conquer all.
Rell was for sure the modern twist of Cinderalla and I love that Rell is talent designer waiting to be found. The prince in this tale seem genuine to Rell but Rell let's the evil step-mother and step-sisters in the way of her happiness. She also let her insecurity get in the way, I almost wonder if she was going to get a happy ending and she sort of did but its not like in Cinderella where she get married. It's more of starting over with what her insecurity tarnished.
I also want to share this that was just on facebook and I think Rell could easily master it!
Caged I was extremely surprise on how much I love this! I was never into Rapunzel, something never clicked even if I read books and I can't really say if I've ever watched any movies. I love the twist in this story and the whole whose the prince and whose the bad guy. It almost like it should be it's own contemporary romance story. Needless to say I'd enjoyed Caged and I love the small twists it had.
I was given an ARC book for an honest review free of persuasion from the author or anyone else affiliated with this book.
I would like to say I do not do anthologies. I despise them. No one can seem to get them right. This book -- This anthology was so different and so much better. I loved how each author took the fairy tales we grew up with and twisted them into deeper/darker/adult versions of your own little fairy tale fantasy.
What made them even better were the 14 fantastic writers. They seemed to turn them into something that they already had out or was working on, so you could already relate to the stories. If the stories were not already woven into their previous works, they were nicely wrapped up into a bow. Some of them were paranormal/fantasy, a few contemporary, and one will surprise you with the genre it came out as.
This book had me hooked till the very end. I always go for the happily ever after. I was not disappointed, however sometimes not all stories end with a happily ever after. Will yours? I have already pre-ordered my copy as I will look forward to re-reading this again and again!
Fairy Tales Made Twisted and Awesome!
I enjoyed this book so much. There is literally something for every reader in here. Not only have I found some new authors to love but the twists on these fairy tales is amazing. While each author has done a twist on a fairy tale, some going way outside the box, some making them ultra modern, each author has their own style and flair, adding twists, sexiness, evil and magic, which when blended in with the other talented authors makes for an amazing compilation. I loved all of the stories but my favorite was Awakened by Kristen Strassel. This is a dark twist on Sleeping Beauty and of course, I love me some Sexy vamps. I think that this is my favorite anthology of the year thus far and I definitely recommend it. I was generously provided a complimentary copy of this book for an honest review.
I like books that this that has several different style of writing and stories. Some stories I liked more then others and that just comes down to personal taste. You can tell all the authors worked hard on developing their characters and still holding some elements of the original in there. Great work to all the authors!
I recommend this book for everyone to give it a chance. You are bound to find a story that speaks to you in this collection. I did buy this book because Im familiar with one authors work and I found a few more authors that I need to look up and find other books that they wrote because Im now a fan due to their writing in this book.
Fairy Tale confessions is amazing!! Each story is short, but incredibly well written. Its amazing how much you can fall in love with the characters in such a short time. My favorites were Blayze and Ash by Jessica Sorensen and Caged by LP Dover. Both stories are so engaging you won't want them to end. You get sucked in so deep! Seriously, get this book! Fairy Tale Confessions is perfect if you love romance, fairy tales, magic, mystery, and/or evil villains! There isn't a bad story in the bunch!
This book was amazing!! Not only because I found some new authors to love, but the twist on these fairytales is genius!! I of course had my favorites, but there were all just so good! I’m impressed with the imagination and talent on how the stories were twisted, making me think “that was so much better than the original!” OK I am going to give a teeny tiny, abbreviated thought on each story ;) but I really enjoyed the writing style of all the authors, even if I didn’t like the story.
**Unlocked by Wendy Owens ~ twist on Little Red Riding Hood- Very interesting! What a fun twist on this story. Exciting and full of action and suspense, and a twist I never saw coming!
**Blayze & Ash by Jessica Sorenson ~ twist on Beauty and the Beast- FREAKING LOVED this story! Beauty & the Beast is my fav Disney story, so I was nervous for this one, but it was great! I really loved how it came together, so different yet the same. The ending made me tear up a tiny bit and left me warm and smiling.
**The Little Mermaid by K.R. Wilburn- GREAT twist. Really enjoyed how the tables were turned in this version, and the ending was perfect. Twisty greatness ;)
**Dance with Me by Tish Thawer ~ 12 Prncesses- This was a good story, honestly, the only version of this story I know is the Barbie version my 3 year old loves, and boy was this one different! This brings out a lot of different emotions and I really liked the way it ended.
**Awakened by Kristen Strassel ~ Sleeping Beauty- Dark and twisted! Not at all what you would expect from a Sleeping Beauty story, I enjoyed it very much
**Priceless by Sarah J. Pepper ~ Rumplestiltskin- I freaking LOVED this story!! The minute I finished it I went straight to my computer to stalk this author and get some more of her work, which left me very pleased after seeing her books! I am surprised how much I loved it, because this type of story isn’t really my genre, but yep, epic! And I can’t wait to read more by her!!!
**The Snow Queen by Shannon Morton- This one was very hard for me to read  the writing and imagination of the author is great and she is without a doubt talented, but the story itself left me with a tummy ache. I literally hate the main character! LOL Just a vile and dark creature. I kept waiting for the turning point where she realized she was an evil demon spawn of satan…but it never came. She was just an evil human being and I had a hard time reading about the joy she got from destroying beautiful souls  I really want to go read something else by this author so I can write a review for a story that leaves me happy, because I did enjoy her style very much!
**Caged by LP Dover ~ Rapunzel- Great love story! Full of hope, heartache, betrayal, and a fight for your heart that is inspiring!
**Puss in Boots by Brynn Myers- Another great love story with a twist that just makes you smile….and cringe a little in places, but all in all just a fantastic story that has you really cheering on the characters.
**Rell by Amy Daws ~ Cinderella- I really loved this twist! Made me cry in all the wrong places, yes I said that, because I’m a weirdo and cried at all happy parts, and I didn’t want it to end! Great great story!
**Casting Crowns and Other Curious Things by Elizabeth Montgomery ~ Alice in Wonderland – This was a fun and dark twist that I very much enjoyed. Will be looking for more from this author.
**Hansel & Gretel by Cameo Renae- OK, I’m not gonna lie, I went into this book purely to read this story! I am a sucker for a Cameo Renae story! This epic tale was set in the ARV-3 world and just…so….freaking….AMAZING!!! Hands down my fav in the book, and once again having me long for book 4 or anything from this scary and fantastic post apoc world!
**Real Boy by Kellie Sheridan ~ Pinochio- I really liked this twist, totally creepy for me because I already have a fear of robots taking over the world LOL but I just felt like it just ended way to fast. It got all intense and exciting!! I sat up in and got anxious and then BAM! It just spun and was over  I wanted just a little more drawn out ending. But I guess me wanting more is a good thing. It must be hard when it’s a short story.
**Jaclyn and the Beanstalk by M. Clarke – This was another fantastic twist with a great ending, one that left you satisfied, but also with the giddiness that there could be more of a story to come, fingers crossed!
So all in all I adore this book full of twisted fairy tales by such amazing and talented authors! Even the one story that hurt my heart to read was amazing and well written. A book that is a must read and can’t wait to get it on my shelf!
Not Disney Fairy Tales, But Sooo Much More . . .
Everyone loves a good Fairy Tale and these 14 amazing authors delivered twisted, beautiful, passionate, contemporary and magical renditions of timeless classics. Having all these crazy novellas put together in one set is a "Dream Come True" and should be grabbed up immediately for your enjoyment. These short tales leave you wanting more and more.
My Quick Thoughts:
"Uncloaked" by Wendy Owens-
Not a typical Little red riding hood story. It's vampires, or the reborn, vs. werewolves with the help of witches and fae.
"Blayze & Ash" by Jessica Sorenson-
Modern day Beauty & the Beast. Blayze is self sacrificing and feisty. Ash is a prick but Blayze brings love into his life and turns his life around.
"Little Mermaid" by K.R. Wilburn-
Navy Seal meets Triton's runaway princess. Great twist fairytale twist and just cute. Loved the dramatic ending.
"Dance With Me" by Tish Thawer
Was unfamiliar with the original fairytale, so this whole story was a complete surprise. Overall just a strange story that's ends with a good ending.
"Awakened" by Kristen Strassel-
Sultry, Sexy and Hot! Vampire rockers finally succumbing to their lust, yep soooo not the classic sleeping beauty but great nonetheless.
"Priceless" by Sarah J. Pepper-
Wow sooo basically no Prince Charming or Mr. Right but definitely a Mr. Dangerous & Delicious for the female lead. The couples flirtation is tension filled, hot and bothered to the max!
"The Snow Queen" by Shannon Morton-
C-R-A-Z-Y!! Mind messing short story about a girl who breaks boys of their emotions. Waaaay twisted.
"Caged" by L.P. Dover-
For a short story it felt full of emotion and action. Great modern twist on Rapunzel, could see this made into a full novel.
"Puss In Boots" by Brynn Myers-
Super cute. Loved the story and unlikely couple made the strongest because of who they really are on the inside not external facade.
"Rell" by Amy Daws-
Modern version of Cinderella. This time Rella has a dream to be a swimsuit fashion designer. Nice twist there.
"Casting Crowns and Other Curious Things" by Elizabeth Montgomery-
Alice is the absolute heroine of this tale! No damsel in distress found in this tale.
"Hansel & Gretel" by Cameo Renae-
If you've read the After Light Saga series this story is a great snippet into that world, but fairy tale style. I kinda hope we get to see Greta in the next books somehow cause she's just as awesome as Abigail Park.
"Real Boy" by Kellie Sheridan-
Oh creepy! iRobot meets bicentennial man Pinocchio story. Bottom line never trust a robot man!! It's clear just stick to the real deal for a true HEA.
"Jaclyn and the Beanstalk" by M. Clarke-
Heroine sets out to save mom and ends up becoming Buffy the Vampire Slayer! I'd totally read a book spin-off from this short story. Really who needs Jack anyways?
Note: This review contains NO spoilers
I am so glad that I decided to review this collection of fairytale retellings! Although I haven't gotten to all the short stories in time for this blog tour, I am already enthralled with the dark and paranormal twists to these fantastical short stories that I have read..and I am even more excited to continue reading the rest of these short stories! Taking all our favorite fairy tales that we grew up with...even watching it through Disney's vision, this collection takes these classics to a whole different level of romance...and sometimes, not so romantic. The imaginations of these authors can be seen in their remarkable writing. Their ability to world-build and develop character with such vivid and depth brought these paranormal and dark twisted fairytale retellings to life.
I can't name just one as a favorite since each short story brought its own intensity. All I can say is that each retelling has its own story to tell that kept me wanting more....mind you, not all has a "happily ever after". But! The "happily ever after" in each story is definitely not what's expected...definitely endings that kept me in awe.
I was provided an advance copy of this book so that I could read and give an honest review.
This is an incredible book. It thoroughly enjoyable to read, and there are plenty of different characters to love, or hate. There is an impressive amount of talent in the fourteen authors who wrote these stories. Each gives new life to old (and sometimes even older) fairy tales. The voices of their characters are distinct, yet each story feels like it belongs with the whole. Some authors write way outside the box, while some give the classics a face lift and a modern twist. Most of the stories fall somewhere between.
These twisted fairy tales are absolutely amazing. They are creative, imaginative and engaging. Some stories resonate better than others, but the book is a good read in its entirety.
It's a great book! I wasn't so sure how Fairy Tales retold as paranormal romance would be. Each author used the basics of a well known Fairy Tale & rewrote it so it had elements of the original but with romance as the ending (except for one tale). Each tale was totally different and I couldn't wait to read the next story. 14 authors and 14 tales. My copy came signed by all the authors!
M. Clarke-Jack and the Beanstalk Kristen Strassel - Sleeping Beauty
Amy Daws - Cinderella Tish Thawer - The Twelve Dancing Princesses
L.P. Dover - Rapunzel K.R. Wilburn - The Little Mermaid
Elizabeth Montgomery - Alice in Wonderland
Shannon Morton - The Snow Queen
Brynn Myers - Puss in Boots
Wendy Owens - Little Red Riding Hood
Sarah J. Pepper - Rumpelstiltskin
Cameo Renae - Hansel and Gretel
~~I received this in exchange for my honest opinion~~
If you THINK you know the stories that you grew up with, you are wrong. Man, reading this collection of fairytales, sure made me look at the stories very differently, it definately wasn't the stories that I grew up with after I read this book. Each author that is in the book makes the stories that they write come to life. You get pulled into their stories and you live there until the story is done. Much like when you were a child, but this version is the adult version.
You will love this book!! You will love reading stories that you grew up with, but with an adult twist on it!!
This was a fun book! I love fairytales but these were not the stories of the fairytales I grew up with.
Some of them are a bit dark, some are slightly twisted, and some just take the story to a whole new magical level.. Each author has brought a different prospective to an old tale and it was very enjoyable.
I enjoyed the book as a whole. The Little Mermaid and the Rumplestitskin were the stand out favorites for me. I will definitely be looking up some of these authors because of their ability to make old story fresh.
I read Jacklyn and the Beanstalk and plan to read the other stories from Fairy Tale Confessions. Jacklyn and the Beanstalk is written by Mary Ting, who is fabulous. Her twist and take on the old story Jack and the Beanstalk is a completely new take and one I have not read before. She really had me glued from the beginning and then it was over!!! I wanted, NO NEEDED more!!! I mean there was sexy vampires, and even hotter monster slayers who wouldn't want more? I can't wait to see what else there is in store for us. This anthology is by far my favorite for 2015!!! These authors rocked it!!
I love the idea of this collection, and some of the retellings were very original in their twists. Some of the stories were rather darker and gorier than I expected - call me a sap, but I prefer happy endings, which some stories had, and others did not. Also, it could've used a stronger edit, both in sentence structure, and in line edits. If your the type of person who gets you're panties in a twist about those kinds of misspellings (*raises hand*), then they might distract from your enjoyment of the storytelling.
My favorite stories here were The Little Mermaid and the creepy Real Boy (a Pinocchio retelling). It's definitely worth a read if you're a fairy tale fan.
Fairytale Confessions
• Uncloaked – Wendy Owens
A thrilling take on Little Red Riding Hood. I loved the characters and would love to see more of their world!
• Blayze & Ash – Jessica Sorenson
The story was beautiful and romantic. I didn’t care for Ash through most of the story but by the end I think I liked him better.
• The Little Mermaid – K.R. Wilburn
I have to say, The Little Mermaid is my favorite Fairytale and retellings leave me a bit nervous and usually unimpressed. K.R. Wilburn’s Little Mermaid was absolutely powerful and moving. I had all kinds of feels as I read it. I had to stop reading the book at the end just to write down my thoughts and process this amazing story!
• Dance with Me – Trish Thawer
This was fun. I didn’t know much about The Twelve Dancing Princesses but after this story I really need to get to know it.
• Awakened – Kristen Strassel
This story was just fantastic, a rebellious Sleeping Beauty and the fairies are selfish. It is definitely a far cry from the original but oh so good.
• Priceless – Sarah J Pepper
Seeing as how I love fairytales with a twist I am aware of Sarah J Pepper! Priceless was definitely a new twist on Rumpelstiltskin. This story is beyond words, it deserves 5 to be a book all on its own. I was on the edge of my seat the entire story and couldn’t even begin to guess at how it would end. Loved it!!
• The Snow Queen – Shannon Morton
OMGosh! What words can I find to describe this story? It was clinically creepy and inspiring. It was very smartly written and the end left me chilled!
• Caged – L.P. Dover
Caged is a twist of Rapunzel. I was shocked at the twist and pretty much reading the story wide eyed and talking to myself. Loved it, this would be a great story to lengthen!
• Puss in Boots – Brynn Meyers
I admit, the only story of Puss in Boots I know is from the Shrek movies. This version was definitely sexy and intriguing!
• Rell – Amy Daws
I went between gritting my teeth in anger and annoyance and weeping with sadness and joy, this modern day Cinderella story was perfectly written.
• Casting Crowns and Other Curious Things – Elizabeth Montgomery
This was, in my opinion, a perfect retelling of Alice in Wonderland! It stays true to the basic theme but like the movie, this story shows a new Alice. A strong Alice who will win out the day and save Wonderland. This was the first story I read in the collection and it set an amazing tone!
• Hansel & Gretel – Cameo Renae
Wow, wow, wow! This is Cameo Renae in a new light! Hansel and Gretel is set in the After Light Saga world and I loved every second of it! It was scary, thrilling, and so good!
• Real Boy – Kellie Sheridan
Pinocchio in the future. I will always think of this story and i,Robot when companies start making robots for the home. Totally creeptastic! I was left wanting more!
• Jaclyn and the Beanstalk – M. Clarke
A must read for those who loved their fairytales as a kid but are ready for them to be a little more adult!
What a fun anthology! Fourteen of today's most exciting indie authors have brought us this collection of twisted Fairy Tales. Some added a darker element to their classic tale and some gender-bended theirs or updated it a bit. But, however it was achieved, each story succeeded in enthralling me and left me wanting more. I will definitely be reading more from each of these authors!
My personal favorites include:
*Uncloaked, by Wendy Owens - A twist on Little Red Riding Hood. This one was full of action and suspense and, even a bit of "badass-ery"! And the ending was fabulous!
*Dance With Me, by Tish Thawer - A fun, yet instructional, update to the tale of The Twelve Dancing Princesses. I feel like I need to re-read the original, now.
*Priceless, by Sarah J. Pepper - I loved this retelling of Rumplestiltskin! The mystery was there, as mystery always shrouds a well-told "Rumple". And there were heat-and fire-added into the mix, as well!
*The Snow Queen, by Shannon Morton - A great modernization of a timeless tale. This story will leave you cold and give you chills.
*Puss in Boots, by Brynn Myers - A sweet love story! Very well-written and enjoyable.
*Rell, by Amy Daws - A twist on the classic Cinderella story, in which our main character loves to create new fashion pieces, especially swimwear. I loved how modern this story was, while still incorporating quite a bit of the original tale's major plot devices.
*Jaclyn and the Beanstalk, by M. Clarke - I love the addition of vampires and monster hunters, which take the original tale to a darker place. I mean who'd have thought that there was something scarier than hearing "Fe fi fo fum..." Now, there is and it's not to be missed!
I hope we hear more from these ladies! Maybe new fairy tales next year? Or twisted Greek Myths? Who knows what they will come up with next?
I was provided with a copy of Fairytale Confessions in exchange for an honest review. These short stories are absolutely wonderful. They are captivating and alluring, but I have to say that I love dark fairytales. The darker, the better—in my opinion! My two favorites from this collection are Blayze & Ash by Jessica Sorensen and Priceless by Sarah J Pepper. I enjoyed every single one of these stories, finding myself lost in worlds that each author briefly creates for their characters. All authors have a fantastic character development and the scenes are very detail oriented. Some stories are a little slower than others; however, none of them lack fascination or failed to hold my attention. As a collection, Fairytale Confessions deserves an honest five star rating because it is full of creativity derived on twisted versions of original fairytales. These stories encompass the entire spectrum of emotions from love to hate, even pain and euphoria. I would definitely recommend this collection to anyone who enjoys dark fantasy, paranormal romance and science fiction. I would also like to note that I would most certainly love to read anything else written by any of these authors since each and every one has provided such a spectacular new perspective on an old tale!
ARC received for an honest review.
WOW! What an amazing compilation of amazing authors. I like anthologies as they show you different authors, different stories and different styles. But mostly I liked them because it shows that authors work hard for the readers to create an amazing piece of work. I really admire that.
I loved every single one of the stories included. I am a big fan of Cameo Renea, but not only her story was amazing. All of them were awesome.
They took their time and reecreated stories from our childhood and made them into dark, seductive and sexy stories. They had some twists that I have not expected and I have to admit that all of the authors involved put together all my favorite genres and it made the book even more interesting.
It was my first but not the only read of those stories.
Well deserved 5 heavenly stars! <3
What a fantastic twist on all those much loved stories that sparked our imaginations from a young age. From a rock chick, vampiric-ish Sleeping Beauty to the sexiest Rumplestilskin I have ever met, this collection of dark, sensual, romantic and adventurous tales will ignite a new passion for the old classics.
Some of the authors in this anthology I have had the pleasure of reading before, others are new to me and I am so glad I had the opportunity to get a taste of their beautiful writing. As with some of the authors, so some of the fairy tales were new to me and I loved diving right into each and every masterpiece that fills the pages of this book.
