Going off sugar and bread has been torture, but so far, I can tell there's a difference in my body. I learned a lot about nutrition and wellness from this book, so it was a plus to know how bad habits can do a lot of damage and this is my opportunity to remedy my poor eating choices from the last few months. Most of the inflammation on my stomach is gone after I started a week ago and I really can't wait to see the results after the last two of the three weeks are over.
UPDATE 12/30/16 (it was going to be updated last Monday, but I forgot): After I finished the diet, I weighed myself and found out I lost about 10 pounds and I lost my love handles. I'm amazed at the results and now I'm more careful with what I eat.
I am almost finished with my 21 days and am down 9 lbs. This is without exercising. I am going to continue doing the plan and add in some exercise now. I didn't realize that broth is so good! I am sleeping a lot better. My skin looks better. I have more energy. I have more weight to lose. Why wouldn't I continue?! I'm not into the recipes, as I already cook healthy. The book could have been condensed into a booklet. General guidelines: Cook broth, drink it two days week with an evening 'snack', the other days, eat healthy and watch your portions.
If you’re interested, but don’t want to read this whole book, it’s essentially Whole30, but for weight loss, with two non-consecutive days a week of bone-broth fasts.
I was hoping there would be more facts regarding bone broth and its benefits rather than links to her website. I could have read the website for free rather than buying the book. There were also too many of her associates, friends and other experts saying pointless things, that added no substance to the book itself but were purely just advertising another book, product or specialist to go and see. There is no doubt that this would plan would work but I am still left wondering if it is because you have cut out loads of bad foods (sugar, processed foods, gluten, dairy to name just a few) or added in bone broth.
I had the carbohydrate flu the 2nd day of the 21 day diet. Eliminating all sugar, dairy, and CHO's hit me just like the flu and it was God-damn awful. Thank the lord, I was over it about 36 hours later! The recipes were not that great because A. I'm a really good cook, and B. The recipes call for an over abundance of seasonings. I began trolling websites for healthy recipes that were way better. Recipes like Brussels sprouts hash with mushrooms at Closet Cooking. Cauliflower rice recipe at Damm delicious is awesome with some modifications to fit the bone broth diet guidelines. The great part of the diet is, I finally have the homemade bone broth down and it is amazing. It is so good and tasty that I don't have to add salt, pepper, dill - nothing. I will say that I look ravenously at the clock for 7 pm so I can have an acceptable snack on Fasting Days ( Fasting Days are twice per week and it's basically bone broth, coffee, tea and water.). Now the 21 days have come and gone and I have loosened up some restrictions, like a little dairy use. I lost a modest 11 pounds over the past month and that was with exercise. So, I would give this book a 3.5 star rating because I did not like the menu/recipes.
This is a very simple diet and not especially original, and thus, did not require such a long treatment or claims of originality. That being said, I feel as if I am not a part of the target audience (women and specifically women who have had difficulty sticking to diets), and I listened to the audio version (the slow reading of numerous recipes was skipped!), on those two basis I will check my negative opinion. I did pull a couple of nuggets from the book (how to make bone broth); and therefore this is a recommend, even for someone like me who’s read lots of diet books, and exercises regularly, but may be in the market to learn a new perspective.
This protocol helped me lose weight when nothing else worked! Many thanks! I didn't use the recipes in her book. I just modified the current recipes I had and did a lot of replacements. The secret to this diet is to PLAN EVERYTHING. Very well written and fast read. Totally delivers on her promises... and I love bone broth and incorporating it into my lifestyle.
My grandmother used to make something she called "beef tea" which was to be given to someone who was seriously ill. If I were sick, I would want to be given beef tea or bone broth and juiced vegetables. Good book. To me, bone broth is another tool in the tool box.
Fascinating & I will definitely incorporate bone broth & hydrolyzed collagen into my diet. Tons of recipes & very detailed plan for her 3-week diet.
I am not planning on doing the actual diet she prescribes & I would have preferred more facts, etc about the benefits of bone broth. I felt a lot of info was lacking & she said basically 'for more info on _____, see my website at _____.' I may check out her site, but I was hoping the book would cover much of what she led us to her site for. I felt like she repeated a lot of the same phrases (granted I read the whole thing in one day) & tooted her own horn about all these people she has fixed. This gave her some credibility as a dietician & naturopathic physician, however, I didn't like the tone.
Sound advice to EAT REAL FOOD, healthy fats, mainly veggies & of course bone broth. I appreciated that she gave reasons she advises on avoiding certain inflammatory foods, etc.
This author does present a plan to lose some weight quickly, but this book and author have so much else to offer. She backs up everything with research results. But you are probably like me. You have tried almost everything, lost weight, and then eventually returned to your old ways and gained a lot back. But there is so much more to being successful than losing weight temporarily. This book actually does have ALL the answers. When you read it, you will agree! So, get reading!
I've made the Bone Broth Diet a way of life after reading this book. Dr. Kellyann's recipes are so good! Not the kind of recipes where you need to go pick up specialty ingredients before you can start. You can use much of what you have on-hand. She gives a shopping list of the week's groceries if you want to follow her menu. My leaky gut symptoms are gone! And everyone has been telling me how great I look.
Finding bones (from grass fed pasture raised animals) is not an easy feat to make your own broth. The concept of fasting twice a week with bone broth is a very healthy way to lose weight and in general just healthy to add to your normal eating habits. The recipes did not impress me at all. But there is some helpful information that I already knew so I wasn't the target audience. Still this could be helpful for some.
Fad diet item status aside (this is so early twenty-teens): I was looking for a variety of broth recipes (Chapter 5, containing nine recipes, and multiple of each type). I'd rather have a recipe with proportions, rather than experiment for broth, then use it as a base or stock for a nourishing, flavorful soup.
Interesting concept. Tried the diet. It was difficult keeping up with all the bone broth production and I didn't see the benefits that were promised. But it's still good information. And, I still make bone broth once a week.
You will learn nothing from this book that you can't get from a Paleo/Ketogenic/Whole 30-type book. Her recipe for the broth is also completely inaccessible (who has a neighborhood butcher offering cow's feet?)
I've been hearing a lot about people making bone broth and it's health benefits. Since we are now staying and working from home and restaurants are closed, I figured I'd look into what it's all about. I like that Dr. Kellyann breaks down times to have the bone broth versus other meals and provides a large selection of recipes. I also liked the portion of the book that delves into exercises and mental and emotional self care. I'm looking forward to giving it a try for a few months to see how it goes.

Too time consuming and detailed for me. Recipes for soup not bone broth. I already boil bones to make a clearish broth. Nothing new that one cannot find online for free. [read the book, not kindle]
Every couple of years I just get bored with my usual diet. So I stumbled on this and its nifty take on diet. It's winter, and chicken soup is my all-time favorite dish, so the timing is right for bone broth. The recipes are easy and different than the regulars.
The coolest part is that I realized I *love* fruit. Cantaloupe! Red Pears! Kiwi! I don't go a day without two servings. IDK why...maybe because it allows me to get my sweet during the day (and wine at night)?
Not much different than a Paleo/Keto/Whole-30 diet with the exception of the two mini-fasting days where an individual drinks nothing but bone broth. While admittedly, the diet works—I lost 4 pounds in just the first week alone—I experienced quite of bit of digestive distress on the mini-fasting days, which was surprising since I'm a carnivore. I love meat!
This book was extremely enlightening. I had no idea of all of the benefits of drinking bone broth. Just a few benefits are healing the gut (I have no more GERD, it is healed), reducing inflammation in your body, and reducing wrinkles!
This is a very well written book with plenty of recipes and guidance. The diet seems like it could develop into a lifestyle that would work for me. I will try it this year and see if I can make progress.
My friends are doing this diet and they have been losing weight. I don't need to lose any weight, but I wanted to be able to understand this process and understand their conversation.
