Uhura: Oh, but they do give us something, Mr. Spock. They give us love. Well, Cyrano Jones says that a tribble is the only love that money can buy.
Capt. Kirk: Too much of anything, Lieutenant, even love, isn't necessarily a good thing.

Wise words Captain! For some reason, that quote came to me when I read this graphic novel. Can't for my life understand why...lol

This is a really cool and entertaining graphic novel, I would say it's really a perfect gift for an ex or an expectant ex hehe.

It's a wonderful collection of love stories, but with twists. A mix of zombies, astronauts, monsters, superheros, “ordinary couples” etc. It's hard to stop reading since they are all so short and often very amusing to read...in a sick and twisted way.

Sometimes not even death can give you the peace you seek:

Never break up during an ice skating competition!

Never talk during a movie!

And for love of God never ever dump you kosmonaut boyfriend in space to be with your kosmonaut girlfriend...

I walked into a local comic store and asked if there was anything out there today like the old EC comics from the 1950s; I'm not much of a comics fan, but these were always my favorites when I was a kid. The owner couldn't think of anything, but I perused for a minute and picked this up. I was hoping to see that good horror and sci-fi stories established in titles like Weird Fantasy and Tales from the Crypt are still being written, but unfortunately, Love Hurts didn't match their quality.

This is a complete collection of the individual Love Hurts comics, and I'll say that the author improved with practice: the more recent episodes are better by far than his first few. Still, most of the comics are too short to establish much plot, let alone character development. Most of the stories are just ironic ideas that weren't fully fleshed out. And there's hardly a really scary idea in the book.

I loved EC comics growing up because the stories were unsettling, smart, and iconically drawn. I'll guess I'll have to keep looking for something that holds up, or else just keep reading the classics!

Not my cup of tea!

I bought it because the author is Swedish and I wanted to discover new artist Beyond Martin Kellerman and Natalia Batista and her Nosebleed Studio. I didn't know what I was getting myself into when I bought this comics.

This is a collection of short stories dealing with love. The sick kind usually. There are men on the verge of leaving their girlfriend who find themselves with literally no heart; there are little wallflowers who plan big revenges; dolls trying to kill each other; girls ready to sell their soul to get even with the man who dropped them off a cliff; little zombie girls... And so on.

I definitely didn't like it. Sometimes it even seems to be a sort of comics book for male readers, like Kellerman's Rocky.

I didn't like the art very much and the color were too "heavy".

I appreciated the introduction to this. Knowing going in that young college grad Kim W. Andersson created this series of short pieces mixing tropes of romance and horror as an exercise to improve his craft made this more interesting.

The stories themselves were pretty much what you'd expect from EC comics or short Future Shocks, with a twist ending you almost always see coming. But analyzing this and watching Andersson grow as a writer and artist made this interesting, at least for me.

Waste of 30 minutes overall I would say. Most of the stories in there are pretty naff and not overly exciting. Liked how all the drawing was different In each one but I think when you read the first story in it and it is just mmm then you probably don't need to continue reading. A couple I liked but not enough to give it anymore than 2 stars.

This was a fun read. Tales of getting revenge on lovers. It was mostly women getting back at men, but there were a few men getting back at women and homosexual relationships. This was definitely an interesting read with nice graphics to go along.

A fun series of commentaries on love and the situations that people find themselves in. Not demanding, but fun.

It never really swept me up, I think because they are shorts. Right when I get into one it’s over. The art is great.

A mixed bag of interesting love gone bad tales, some are engaging others not so much.
I sort of wish the cover image had been expanded into a story.
Either way a fun sexy (at times) romp.

More of a 3.5 ⭐️
Not groundbreaking but entertaining enough. The kind of short horror comics I like to read here and there.

This is a trimmed down version of my review, to view the full review visit The Book Ramble.

I received a copy of this book from Dark Horse on Edelweiss in exchange for an honest review.

Love Hurts is a series of short comics about the ways in which love hurts. The stories often focus on lovers becoming violent with each other or dying to protect their love (more often things end in murder though). The stories are grim and funny with gritty art.

I'm sort of on the fence with Love Hurts. I think the stories were funny and often had some interesting ideas, though there were a lot of repeated gags and horror moments throughout the series as a whole. I found the art to not be my favourite, though I think it often fit the tone of the stories.

A lot of the stories were sort of "scorned lover" situations wherein one member gets revenge on the other - often by murdering them in some gruesome way. I actually quite enjoyed that and found the revenge aspect was quite satisfying, even in such short stories. I do think it would have been cool to see it done over the longer span of one story instead of throughout a whole bunch of short ones.

I wasn't a huge fan of the art, it is really not my style, or to my taste, but I did think it suited most of the stories. There is something less clean and perfect about the art which fits the grim and gritty stories of this book. I did sometimes think it seemed out of place, but largely thought it was suitable for the book.

I think I would recommend this book, even though it wasn't really for me, because I think the concept was done well with suitable art and it really worked overall.

I had never heard of Kim Andersson or the Love Hurts comics when I saw this book at the library but if it has anything to do with love I am game so here I am writing a review for this pleasantly morbid collection about love, loss, lust, and everything else in between. Some of the strips concentrate more on love and others concentrate on revenge (some even going the way of murder…it can get intense so prepare yourself). It is a collection that I would give to an ex if I wanted to get my point across.

The couples aren't normal. There's a mix of zombies, superheroes, monsters, and a few other categories of non-human and human characters. There is no continuity; each strip is its own story so it is really easy to pick up and put down. The only problem is that it wasn't one that I wanted to put down so I didn't.

Some of the strips would be better suited for Creepypasta while others would fit nicely in the science fiction section of your graphic novel collection. I guess the best way to classify this collection is "bad relationships ending badly!"

It is a very different collection so if you're into different and obscure; this is a collection for you.

I loved how the revenge strips were basically women getting revenge on wrong-doing men. Graphic Novels can cater so much to those who classify as male so it's a breath of fresh air to finally stumble across one that empowers the vagina.

The design of this book reminds me of the series "Cheerleaders vs. Zombies". Both series have very short stories of only several pages at the most. The Cheerleaders vs. Zombies books are humor with a touch of horror. "Love Hurts" is somewhat romantic horror with a touch of humor.

Love Hurts is much better written than the Cheerleaders vs. Zombies stories. A few of these stories remind me of a really good horror story from the EC comics days. The art work gets better the second half of the book.

Overall, this is an in interesting book with a quick pick up and read story premise that shows the dark side of love and romance.

***Thank You Edelweiss and Dark Horse Books for letting me review this in exchange for an honest review!***
This is such a fun and different graphic novel. This has different stories and some are better than others but all in all they are brilliant! I can not lie I requested this from Edelweiss all because of the cover, but there is so much more to this than a kick-ass cover. the stories inside are all about love but some are different kind of love and some can be quite gruesome. The art work inside is bright and fun and I loved it. I really cannot wait to own my own copy!

First time reading anything by Andersson and I must say I am impressed! These short stories are very interesting and different. Gruesome, crude, and beautiful are all words that can be used to describe this collection. I find myself repeatedly scanning through the comic after I completed it because I love the art and it's grittiness THAT much.

4/5 stars because some of the stories were a bit predictable for me, but other than that it was VERY entertaining.

OK, in order to survive, I'm giving myself one sentence for each and every book I read, nothing more, nothing less. So, here goes:

This is an incredibly impressive debut book, chronicling the evolution of a comics artist from the first tentative steps up until nigh perfection, all the while giving us interesting, beautiful, scary genre pastiches with terrifying, romantic twists.

Really enjoyed these shorts! The art was beautiful and creative. The stories made me laugh, think, and raise a brow sometimes in the same set. lol What I liked most is the fact that the artist was not afraid of going outside the box. Love can be painful and this compilation shows us the many ways :)

via NYPL - 3.5 stars. Inconsistent, but solid artwork. The stories are all short ones, all of the love lost/scorned/etc. leading to a tragic/darkly humorous/violent finale. The theme runs out of steam at times, though quite a few of the tales are well done. It may not stick with you for long, but Anderson looks like a talent to watch for in the future.

The stories were simple and not very original. The twist at the end of each story is almost always the same. That said the style of art was fitting and there were some interesting ideas. The execution though was subpar. I prefer something more complex and with less male jerks. I liked the double layer of nr. 5 and nr. 18 and the diversity of nr. 13.

I really enjoyed this collection of insanely unique and interesting stories. Putting 35 stories in 200 pages means that many of them are only several pages long, but that didn't detract from my enjoyment of them. I'm very interested to see what Astrid beings us next year!

This was beautiful and fascinating all the way through. The stories ranged from Creepypasta-esque to sci-fi epics. It's an amazing collection of short story comics, and one of the most unique and stunning books I've read this year.

I suspect different stories will resonate for different people. Some didn't work for me at all, some were absolutely brilliant, and there's a lot of fun to have between those two extremes.
