This one was…fine. Pretty boring actually since nothing really happens. Like, at all. *sigh* I kinda feel like this series is being dragged out longer than it needs to be at this point. Or that’s just me, which is highly possible, haha.

I do know a lot of people read the back of this volume and think there’s going to be a love triangle between Shirayuki, Zen, and Obi (which I thought too), but after reading this I don’t think so just because Shirayuki and Zen are totally committed to each other and Obi respects that.

So no drama (which is fine). Or action (which is not fine). Or…anything.

There’s also a separate one shot at the end called “Beyond the Drops.” Sadly, I didn’t care for it. 🤷🏼‍♀️

This new installment of the series depicts a transition, as Shirayuki leaves the comfort of Wistal Castle and has to say goodbye to all her friends. The best part of the manga was definitely the conversation between Zen and Obi. I love seeing these two characters interact, and appreciate how mature they were while having this somewhat difficult conversation and how much respect they show for one another. The other notable scene were the goodbyes Shirayuki had with the rest of the cast. It was really heart-warming to see each of Shirayuki's relationships represented with as much importance as her relationship with Zen. Overall, I just wish there was more to this volume. I'm hoping volume 14 is a bit longer, and I'm excited to see where this story goes next.

I'm pretty sure I cried three different times when reading this volume, which was horrible for my allergies since they have been really bad today, but THE EMOTIONSSSSS!! *sobs*

If I thought the last volume was an emotional roller coaster, this one was times ten!!

I'm not even sure which part to focus on because the beginning was pretty crushing. Not because anything "bad" happened, but because of the sadness of the situation and then Zen (and everyone else) encouraging Shirayuki.

Then everything with Obi…*cries harder*

I was definitely worried because I thought Obi was going to leave too, but that conversation with Zen really hit in the feels. *sobs*

I KNOW this is a romantic story, but I think the fact that Shirayuki is willing to leave Zen to go pursue her passion and NOT throw a fit (even if I could NEVER see her do that anyway, but still) speaks SO highly of her character. How many shoujo manga are out there where even the leads are willing to be apart so that one (or both) of them can grow as individuals? I think of my passions now and while they are a deep part of me, I don't know if I could give them up for my spouse. And while Shirayuki and Zen aren't married, I think it still makes the situation no less important or hard. These two young characters really are something special. <3

While I'm sad Shirayuki has left the palace, I can't deny that I'm really excited for Shirayuki and Ryu's upcoming adventures. I love seeing them together and know Shirayuki will grow a lot in this time and was SO happy about the final page!! Left me feeling encouraged because I think even if I'm excited, a small part of me was bummed that are gang wouldn't be together anymore for a while.

Cheers to another adventure for our characters! <3

Zen and Shirayuki spend time apart, certainly, but are always close at hand to one another. Thanks to Zen’s brother, however, that’s all set to change. With so many impending departures it’s time for some real talk, but not necessarily between the people you might be expecting...

Life happens to our characters and that’s a good thing. While splitting everybody off into smaller groups makes perfect sense, it turns out that Zen’s brother may have left some critical information out. Basically his brother’s a jerk and while I suspect this twist to a twist is his latest attempt to nudge Zen forward, it’s still kind of rotten (and Zen rightly knows he can’t do squat about it either).

Still, what makes this such a smart change is that it forces our leads to be a little more honest with themselves, plus it also goes a long way towards letting Shirayuki shine outside of Zen’s shadow. Not that she’s been a damsel by any stretch, but I love that this series continues to have her advancing in her career even as she’s coupled to a prince (and she’s good at it!).

What this volume actually turns out to be about, however, is Obi, who has been here from the beginning and mostly in Zen’s service, but certainly to a slightly shadier degree than Mitsuhide and Kiki.

He’s also nursing a massive crush on Shirayuki, which has been pretty obvious for a while. The way Zen handles all this and his conversations with Obi over the course of the volume show the constant maturity to this particular story and also seems to finally change the way Obi perceives his comrades and vice-versa. It’s different, but good different.

And you get the usual goofing around even as the status quo is being tossed for something more interesting - there are SO many possible plots spinning out of this that it practically reinvigorates a series that has not really needed it because it’s still so good. When Shirayuki and Ryu get to their new home we get a slew of new characters and old favourites, many of whom show lots of potential.

(As usual, the incredibly deadpan Kiki walks away with the ‘best character’ award)

On the downside, this cast is somewhere beyond sprawling now and while the regulars are easy enough to place, the return of people who haven’t been around for 4 volumes (at least) clearly might mean more if I had any flipping clue who they were. To say nothing of everybody new being added.

Then, the dreaded ‘bonus one-shot’ fills the back of this book as well and these often serve as something I could really do without and this one is no different. I will say it’s perfectly fine, but also not what I’m here for. It also kind of pulls its punches at the end too.

4 stars. Obviously I didn’t think the one-shot was anything special, but the rest of the book more than made up for it. This series has a fantasy world, yet the characters feel far more real than most series. Still an incredibly strong title this many volumes in.

Love the characters, but this felt more like a transition volume to get people set up in new storylines. Not much new action.

Nothing too exciting happened in this volume, but I anticipate it’s the bridge to some upcoming intrigue. As always, the art in Snow White with the Red Hair is a treat for the eyes – simple, smooth lines. Detailed, but nothing too overwhelming. Very fitting for a fairy tale-like fantasy manga.

As sad as it is to see Zen and Shirayuki separated, I think it will enliven the story. I’m glad to see that Obi will be maintaining his watch over Shirayuki during her time away. I quite enjoy watching their friendship and trust in each other build. Obi and Shirayuki were born into much different lifestyles than Zen, Kiki, and Mitsuhide, and we’ve seen them each grow during their time in Zen’s party. I’m not a huge of love triangles, but its easy to see why he’s a qualified contender and wish he was the true love interest in this story.

It's been so long since I spent time with these characters, and it was good to be back! Everyone's goodbyes to Shirayuki were so sweet. Not much else actually happened, though... Except for one conversation that I did NOT expect! 😯
Eagerly awaiting the next one!

This series has been dragged on for too long but I keep reading it because its really convenient to read them and they're short. Obi finally confesses to Zen that he likes Shirayuki

"Snow White with the Red Hair" is fantasy-type manga that takes place in a faraway kingdom. At the beginning of the tale, Shirayuki wants to become an herbalist, but the prince of Tanbarun is planning to make her his concubine! She makes a run for it and encounters Zen, the second prince of the nearby kingdom of Wisteria. Zen helps her escape from her plight and escorts her to his kingdom, where she becomes a full-fledged court herbalist. The rest of the story follows their adventures together (and apart!) as they develop deeper feelings for one another and work to overcome the gap between their social stations.

What impressed me the most about this story was how balanced the characters were. Often, characters are written with extreme characteristics and stereotypes. While this can be funny and distinctive, it can also get old after a while. It was refreshing to see that Shirayuki wasn’t a helpless princess, nor was she refusing assistance. She certainly did want to do things for herself and on her own, but she wasn’t above accepting help when she needed it. Even Zen, despite his stubbornness and rule-flouting tendencies, didn’t just rush off to do whatever he wanted all the time. Instead, he faithfully played the role of prince and followed his duty rather than his emotions.

Personally, I find it so much easier to connect with a character who knows how to flex and adapt as their situation changes. Plus, it was so exciting to see these characters build their relationship the “right way,” by working through the rules and customs of their world so they could perform the roles they’d been given to the best of their abilities.

I have more to say on this series (and other books!) in my blog! Check it out here:

So our regal older brother Izana has dispatched Shirayuki to Lilias (the same border city of learning we had visited in a previous arc), which well, with so recently Zen having confessed his intentions, does seem like Izana is presenting them challenges like 'are you sure your love can survive a long distance relationship?'. I love Izana, I really do, and I see his point, not to mention it allows Shirayuki a chance to grow away from the protection of Zen and the others. But am I also sad that he is separating the lovers for two whole years? Also yes.

Anyway, so most of this volume is about goodbyes - Shirayuki is sad at leaving Zen, and Mitsuhide and Kiki and Obi (she is supposed to go to Lilias accompanying Ryuu alone). Kiki orders Zen to reassure her (love that woman), and they have a sweet conversation. Meanwhile, Obi is not sure what he wants to do - even the others notice that he has been 'off' lately; even when Zen asked him if he'd like to follow Shirayuki, he refuses, and goes into contemplation (which for him, is making himself scarce). And when he comes a decision, he goes to have a 'chat' with Zen. In related news, I have nearly canon confirmation of my OT3 hehehehe.

On Shirayuki's side of things, we are back in Lilias, and now that they are here as herbalists on staff and scholars, they get everyone hyped up to check out who these two people under the famous Royal Herbalist are. We meet new characters, colleagues who Shirayuki and Ryuu are supposed to work with, and they are warm and awkward, in that order.

As of now, I do love the pacing, and want to see what challenges and journey they will have respectively.

"It is there, in the place where all of Clarines's knowledge is kept...that I expect you two will discover the roles you're meant to play" -King Izana.

The above quote is why I think Izana is a sage character. I feel like he knows what Ryu and Shirayuki should do, but I think he doesn't know how much they are going to go beyond his expectations. Personally, I think they will, but I am not sure what that means.

Obi and Zen
As the summary tells us, Obi and Zen has a talk. Honestly, I was slightly confuse on this talk. There was a word that was use that I am not sure what meaning we are using it as. Was Obi and Zen referring to the word that sounds like planet or were the referring to a word that is in the word evolution? I do not think it was the word contained in evolution, because Obi asked Zen about what his plan is for Shirayuki and himself. I think it is the word that sounds like planet. If it was the word in evolution then I think it is still in the realm of friendship. It's hard to tell for me. Maybe the Japanese would have been clearer? I don't know.

Lilias and its Crew
I think I am going to like these characters. I am curious to know whether we will have a timeskip or will we just go through it all with Shirayuki and company?

The Volume's End
Hey, Friend! You have joined the party. You can figure out what I mean by that.

Verdict: Why does July have to be so far away before the next volume comes out?

Hi, an Emerson character here. Obi is my favorite character so this book HURT. It hurt enough for me to pause and write a review.
Shirayuki is getting carted off to Lilias with Ryu, leaving the rest of the crew behind. Not only did this break my heart, but she didn't take Obi, in which I threatened to cry. Izana is really pushing the limits of Shirayuki and Zen's relationship, but I think he expected this to make them stronger. He's probably right, still he didn't account for Obi, who in this book He also asks Zen when he's going to propose to Shirayuki (because we all know it's going to happen, Zen is just slow). I think that's the most wonderful thing. Yes, Obi has feelings for Shirayuki, but he understands and respects that she's in love with Zen and vice versa. He's willing to help the two of them get together, even if it means battering his own heart. This is why Obi is my favorite character. He may act aloof, but he cares for people and is willing to do what it takes to keep them safe and happy, even if that means hurting himself.

Obi, you deserve happiness, I can't wait to see what Akiduki does with you next. Five stars, even though it's sad happy for me.

Review:

This is such a cute story. It makes me sad that Shirayuki and Zen will be apart for so long. I can tell that Zen's brother isn't doing this to be cruel. He's actually doing them a favor. They've been practically attached at the hip since she's been at the palace, and he saw how capable she was without Zen by her side. I think he's doing it to force both of them to grow more as people. I do hope that he at least visits her. Two years is a long time. They are so cute and 100% belong together.
I like Obi, but I can't see him and Shirayuki as a couple. He may be in love with her, but she doesn't look at him the way she looks at Zen. She's always happy to see him, but the way she looks at Zen is special.

I have the next 4 volumes from the library, so glad that I don't need to wait.

So ummm, remember how I said I was not going to finish it before tonight? Yeah well, I finished it.
(BIG SURPRISE) not😑
It was soo GOOD though! I couldn't put it down!
ZEN and Shirayuki had a sweet moment together, Kiki HUGGED Shirayuki😲😲! Mitsuhide and Shirayuki hugged, and Shirayuki hugged Obi. It was sooo beautiful😢
Ryu and Shirayuki are going to be in Lillias for two years😟. Obi is also going to be with them😄. Obi made brakefast for Zen Kiki and Mitsuhide, and confessed to Zen that he likes Shirayuki😀😀. Sadly I don't think anything will come from it🙁. Obi is to respectful to interfere with Zen and Shirayuki's relationship. Which is one of the things I like about him, no matter how much he jokes around he is respectful. 😏
Now Shirayuki and Ryu work under Shidan, so hopefully we will learn more about Shidan and Garak.
