There’s never been a better time to discover the novels behind the blockbuster Starz original series Outlander . Blending rich historical fiction with riveting adventure and a truly epic love story, here are the first four books of Diana Gabaldon’s New York Times bestselling saga that introduced the world to the brilliant Claire Randall and valiant Highlander Jamie
OUTLANDER DRAGONFLY IN AMBER VOYAGER DRUMS OF AUTUMN
Scottish Highlands, 1945. Claire Randall, a former British combat nurse, is just back from the war and reunited with her husband on a second honeymoon when she walks through a standing stone in one of the ancient circles that dot the British Isles. Suddenly she is a Sassenach—an “outlander”—in a Scotland torn by war and raiding clans in the year of Our Lord . . . 1743. Claire is catapulted into the intrigues of a world that threatens her life, and may shatter her heart. Marooned amid danger, passion, and violence, her only chance of safety lies in Jamie Fraser, a gallant young Scots warrior. What begins in compulsion becomes urgent need, and Claire finds herself torn between two very different men, in two irreconcilable lives.

I had trouble putting this series down. It has accompanied me to bed many a night, travelled across the mountains on several trips and filled leisurely hours while resting on a beach vacation. My only consolation with the completion of this series is that I have the next four books to enjoy!
As I watched the television series before reading the books, I can’t help but compare. Obviously the books are better. I much prefer Claire’s character in the books though. She has much more of a backbone. I’m not sure why they changed her character so much in the show. She was frustrating and sometimes I would just want to tell her to stop whining and get a grip. At least in the books she seemed like she actually grasped that she was in a different century and had to do things she wouldn’t have to otherwise. I look forward to reading the next 4 books and hope they are as good.
Whenever I stop updating Goodreads it's a good sign I'm stress-reading (yes, that's like stress-eating) the Outlander series (again). Third time through the first 4 or 5, and Outlander remains the place I most want to disappear to. Some people zone out on TV; I choose to blanket fort with Jamie & Claire. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
Longer then stories, this bundle of four novels is amazing. Time travel adventures, hisory, medical and life saving situations, dangers all over the time and place, and above all, love and passions between characters that drive them to kill someone, if necessarry, to save the loved one.
CW: graphic descriptions of sex, violence, rape, torture, injuries, death, etc.
Ok....so many thoughts about this series. I absolutely LOVED the concept, loved the storyline....didn't love the amount of graphic open-door sex. I felt like I was constantly skipping pages of sexual content. I finished reading the book (it was an all-four-in-one ebook from the library) because I was fascinated to find out the ending, but till the end I was incredibly frustrated with what felt like gratuitous violence and sex.
I don't believe I'll be able to finish the series, unfortunately.
Although the plot seems to get a little more ridiculous as the series progresses, and by all rights Jamie and Claire should have died several times over, I am enjoying this series! It’s pure escapism and I can’t wait to see what happens to them next!
These books are an expansive, multilayered story/stories that will keep you on your toes as well as fully submerse yourself into a world that you will be equally invested in the "mundane" as you are the fantastical.
All of Diana Gabaldon’s Outlander books are outstanding, love filled and marvelous reading experiences. These stories are well researched albeit fictional accounts of history as lived by our protagonists Jamie and Claire Fraser, also our favorite love interests throughout these eight, soon to be nine of ten books in the Outlander series. It could be classified as historical, romantic fantasy but Outlander is also so much more that won’t necessarily fit neatly into a particular category. Ms. Gabaldon’s has done something right in her many Outlander books because her first book, Outlander, was published in 1990. This is 2021, so 31(almost 32)years later there is a highly successful STARZ series now getting ready to start showing it’s 6th Season early in 2022, her ninth book in this series will hit bookstores November 23rd and her fans are as faithful as ever if not more so as a second generation has now been introduced to this author. One can easily forget the time travel elements in the stories because Ms. G’s characters are so well drawn. There are really no small characters because she finds apt spaces for each of them. There is violence. The 18th Century in Scotland and the new world of America was full of violent events so her meticulous research does not glorify the violence; it is but a backdrop. The same can be said of the sex in these books. It is loving, beautiful, honest, sometimes even funny but never gratuitous. The words that come from Jamie to Claire, Claire to Jamie as well as to all of her characters are deep, loving and memorable. Just ask any of the fans of these books. They’ll say the same. I hope this review helps others in choosing to read all of the Outlander books. To say that I love the story the tell would be an understatement. This is my third time through while many of her long time fans reread them all each year. This is the best I can say to recommend all to just read Outlander. I think you’ll be hooked; but see for yourself.
I loved the Outlander books. I've read almost all of Gabaldon books. I am waiting for the last two of her Lord John Grey books. The books give you a look at Scottish life under the English in the mid 1700's. Also, what life was like in the soon to be USA. Claire, a women who served in the 1940's as a nurse for the British soldiers in WWll. After the end of the war she, accidently gets transported back two hundred years in time, to meet the love of her life. Jamie Fraser is a scottish Laird who suffers at the hands of English Soldier known as Black Jack Randall. A multigenerational relative of her husband, Frank Randall, the resemblance is startling. The books span around 30 years. Between the time Claire arrives in the past knowing some of the history of the past. She knows Scottish life will not be the same after the battle of Culloden. Jamie should have died in the war. Jamie had sent Claire back to the future. She becomes a surgeon and has Jamie's baby. Read the books if you like historical novels you should love these. I have reread the series three times.
I was very sad to be coming to the end of the first 4 books but I am sooo glad that I haven’t completely finished the series. I love to escape back in time with Claire and experience the Scottish culture of my ancestors. Watching the Outlander series on Netflix and Prime (on my 3rd time through right now) made me want to read the books. I am addicted to the show but I love the books even more and I love the differences the books bring to this beautiful story. I am a descendant of St.Clair and Wallace stock and I was born in North Carolina so I have enjoyed a special kinship with the storyline and I have loved learning about Scottish history as much as the love story of Jamie and Claire. Thank you Diana for allowing me to reconnect with my roots through your epic tale. I hope to visit Scotland one day.
The book is super glue. Dear God help me if I couldn't put the damned thing down! Never come across anything like it! Utterly brilliant and believable adventure that keep you wishing you had more hours just to keep reading it. Mine was the 'cross stitch' version. Dragonfly in Amber isn't a book. It's an experience, and after you read it, you will never forget so many scenes and moments. The biggest compliment to Diana is that I cannot remember how she evoked just vivid scenery in my mind. It all just seemed to be interwoven into the objective narrative all the time, without me noticing. But as I think back to the book, I can clearly remember rooms, landscapes and castles, as if I had seen an image on a screen somewhere. There are strong sexual scenes. Highly recommended only for mature audience.
The author is masterful st creative g characters who stick with yours. After finishing this 4 book series, it took me a while to get their stories out of my head. Jamie & Claire, Bree & Roger. We cringe every time they get into a life challenging scrape, even though there are more books in the story and death of a main character is not likely. The descriptions of landscape, weather brawls and meals are likewise complete enough you feel you've been there. On the other hand, as each chapter brings a new life threatening situation to one of the characters, we know that the outrageously brave characters will out think, out fight, or otherwise rise to the impossible challenge and rescue them selves or their loved one. It does become formulaic, but we lap it up.
After watching the first five seasons of the hit show I decided to read the the books. I was lucky enough to obtain the first four books as a bundle. I enjoyed the world building, the history, the characters, and the love between Jamie and Claire. I have now purchased the next four and look forward to diving back into the story to see what happens to my favorite people. I would recommend this to anyone that loves history, love stories and time travel and for anyone who loves reading about Scottish men of honor and the strong women who love them.
Intriguing, suspenseful, heartwarming, action-packed love story!
Time traveling between 1946 and 1743 is where the story begins. The books are captivating from start to the and very difficult to put down. Diana Gabaldon writes these novels with captivating and descriptive scenes and characters. I find these books especially exciting and fascinating because my grandmother was born in Scotland. The historical facts are well written and exceptional to learn. I love these books and the series made from them. I look forward to reading the next book. I hope you enjoy them as much as I do! Happy reading! 😊
My friend has been trying to get me to read the Outlander series for a year now. Me: Timetravel? No, thanks.
She finally convinced me to watch S1E1 of the tv series at her house. I stayed 'til midnight to watch seven episodes.
I marathoned all four seasons and immediately bought the 8 ebooks. I *love* the characters (even the ones I hate), the settings, the nuanced dialogs. When I'm caught I'll start on the Lord John series.
Overall, the later books are better than the first. As an introduction to the world of Outlander, the first book lacked character development for Claire resulting in a very two-dimensional portrayal. This issue improves vastly over the next three books. Independent of this issue, my biggest dislike about this series is the extremely racist depiction of the character Yi Tien Cho. It seems to go beyond what was strictly necessary to portray the racism of the time period, especially from Claire's perspective.
This is my favorite series. The main character is a survivor through and through. There is a beautiful, real evolution of love and relationships that I haven’t found elsewhere. Diana Gabaldon weaves fantasy, historical fiction and fact, romance and tragedy to create this exciting, sometimes heart wrenching, story of love across time. I just finished the most recent book, Go and Tell The Bees That I am Gone, and am ready for the next. Grab a glass of scotch, settle in for the night and enjoy. Slainte!
I started this series 4 weeks ago and now have just finished the 4th book. Each character is so vivid and richly developed that I care very much and want to stay with them. The details of the places provide all the sustained energy to support the characters. The well documented history makes it all worthwhile. I will charge through the next four books with a smile and a grateful heart. I am watching the STARZ series as well.
OMG! This series is outstanding! If you have a summer to kill, I highly recommend it. If not, you can probably make the series of eight books last for a year easily! History, fantasy, romance, all rolled into one series. It your a stickler for consistent point of view this may upset you as the point of view in this series switches from time to time. It didn’t bother me because I was too caught up in the story!
When I began the Outlander books, I fell so hard for the character of Jamie Fraser and his relationship with Claire, the time-traveling WWII nurse, that I was reading them at stoplights while I was driving. I’m not proud, but they are THAT good. This box set contains all my fave books of the series—Outlander, Dragonfly in Amber, Voyager, and Drums of Autumn. There are four books here so I decree I’m allowed four sentences.
The Outlander Series bundle books 1 - 4 has transported me more than once to the eighteenth century. While reading g I am no longer a spectator, I am there. I am able to look through my minds eye to witness their expressions, inner thoughts and subsequent actions. I am there, and have come to love this family. Respect their honesty, their preservation, their loyalty, their love of family and each other.
This is a bundle series of 4 books 80 hrs of read time. I found the Outlander tv series and couldn't get enough of Claire and Jamie so I start on the long journey of a read which I highly recommended. You can feel the love Jamie has for Claire on these written pages which makes my heart flutter. Claire is a accidentally time traveler and Jamie is a manly man with deep honor and too much pride 200 years in the making.
