You know when the first line of a novel consists of a large black tentical exploding from a wall, you’re in for a fast paced, wild ride. The Jagannath provides just that. It has been a while since I have read a science fiction story, most of what I read is horror or thriller. But I was very pleased with my first in while tread onto Sci-fi turf. The story takes place in the future and a giant shape shifting creature is devouring mankind - pretty cool so far- but mankind has regrouped and is now starting to attack and test the creature for weakneses. This is the part that really drew me into the story. So many “end of the world” storylines show us, mankind, falling apart much too fast, and much too completely in my oppinion. Maybe I am just so full of hope for us, but I feel that if the end came, be it through zombies, aliens or what not, we would band together and stand against it much more than what is depicted in many stories. That’s just what we’ve done in Jagannath.
The character’s in Jagannath range from soldiers to civilains and all are well crafted. There’s Lily, a little girl you’ll grow to love. I won’t give anything away, but it’s made clear that she seems to hold the answers of beating this thing and the story evolves around searching for her. The search is led by a soldier, Kimi. Another character I enjoyed reading about, but not my favorite. My favorite character might be considered an odd choice, but I really liked the way the auhtor handled him. His name is Cooper and he’s a dirt bag. Again, I don’t want to give anything away, but if you read the story, I t hink you’ll like the way it was handled as well. All in all, Jagannath is definitly worth your time reading. It moves fast, has a lot of action, but also focuses on strong character development. It’s got everthing the sci-fi kid in you will love, hovercycles, holgrafic videos, wrist mounted gel guns (gel being a weapon they developed to hurt the Jagannath), hoverships, and of course a menacing creaturing trying to destory mankind.
