The second book in the Souls of Fire series continues the story of Emberly, her partner Jackson Miller and her life mate Rory. Sam also continues to be featured in his role as a member of the Paranormal Investigations Team. Emberly and Jackson are looking for stolen research for a cure for a plague-like virus created in a failed government experiment. However, their mission is interrupted by Emberly’s prophetic dreams of a creature on a murdering spree.

The premise was great. This urban fantasy was suspenseful and action-packed, but I felt somewhat disconnected to the characters. However, I feel I missed a lot by not reading book one first. There’s a lot going on with several subplots that left me underwhelmed.

Overall, this intense novel is an interesting urban fantasy with a bit of paranormal romance and plenty of action and violence. Unfortunately, I didn’t connect with the characters.

I purchased a copy of this novel. All opinions expressed in this review are my own. The publication date was July 7, 2015.

Keri Arthur used to be one of my MUST read authors; her RILEY JENSON GUARDIAN novels are still, to this day, some of my all time favourite werewolf books. Then, I gave her DARK ANGELS a whirl, and my zeal for her writing took a bit of a dive. Being the ever dedicated fan-girl that I am, I snatched-up FIREBORN and enjoyed it. WICKED EMBERS on the other hand was freakishly similar to Arthur's other two series, so newcomers will probably enjoy it, while as seasoned stalkers like myself might conclude that it’s just more of the same.

The story was good—prophetic dreams about a beast on a killing rampage, and the red cloak plot line thickens. I was hoping for more phoenix mythology, but that particular aspect was (unfortunately) a little on the light side in this installment. The action was plentiful, and surpassed my Urban Fantasy standards; then again, I'd expect no less from this writer because that's her #1 strength when it comes to this genre, well that and thread weaving.

Emberly is clearly a hybrid of Riley/Risa. Her abilities are different; however as I mentioned, the author didn't really go into them that much, so the variations were negligible which made all of the other similarities extremely noticeable. Sam could be the meat in a Quinn/Azriel sandwich, and Rory is a close proximity of Rhoan/Tao, except she doesn't have sex with either of the latter which brings me to my next point...

I accepted Riley's promiscuity because she's a werewolf, and they tend to get around. And, maybe that's unfair of me, but all three of Arthur's heroines have been easy lays, and don't know the meaning of the word monogamy. It's difficult to cheer for a protagonist who thinks with her woman bits first and her brain a distant second. That being said, I'm deeply tempted to pick-up the next title based solely on the last sentence.

There was nothing significantly wrong with WICKED EMBERS; I've just read this book three times now.

Most of Wicked Embers follows the plot that started in Fireborn so it definitely can't be read as standalone. Jackson Miller and Emberly are still after the missing research notes on Crimson Death. They need to confirm those notes are still out there, find them and stop the sindicati coming after them. Since there are two factions they need to find out which one is after them. So for the most of the book you follow Em and Jackson looking for various players connected to Crimson Death research notes.
The leader of red cloaks is revealed and I can't say it surprised me. There are lots of hints to who he is in previous book too.

Sam makes an appearance a couple of times. Although I haven't quite warmed up to him yet, he wasn't as bad as in the first book. At least he tells Em what happened to him.

The other story Em gets involved in through her dreams is a bit neglected thanks to their main investigation. A pity.
However, the hunt for this shape-shifting creature announces what is to come since it seems to be one of the first in an approaching darkness wave. And Emberly is one of few who can see the early warnings thanks to her dreaming gift.
You could say Wicked Embers is sort of a transitional story: they are still after the notes and there is something worse than red cloaks coming.

Anyway, even though I would have liked more of the story about the creature and less of their moving around the city looking for various people, Keri Arthur has yet to disappoint me. I love the rules of her fictional worlds (if you've read any of her books, you'll know why). They will always make her books better than most others where authors don't bother to follow the rules they themselves set up.

I'm on the fence on if I'll be following this series. Unfortunately the idea behind the Phenoix does not line up with the reality that is this series. I'm not a fan of Sam & her unhealthy obsession with him is annoying. He's an asshole. Ember is pretty weak as a character & in some cases emotionally pathetic (with the ongoing whining).I do like Jackson but not enough to continue the series simply bc of him. All the other characters aren't developed enough to keep my interest. The next installment promises Ember becomes proactive & that has some possibilities. Overall the book wasn't great. In fact 50% I thought of DNF-ing it. At this point I wouldn't recommend the series unless your goal is to fight insomnia bc this book was yawn inducing. 2 stars

Not a bad story by any means; it just wasn't anything new. Emberly is a variation of Riley/Risa; and her sex life/need for sex runs along the same lines as the previous two series. And like the previous series, Em's sex life is hashed and rehashed like it was a separate character. Why does every h in Arthur's world have to be a slut to survive? Oh, and Sam is turning into long-suffering Quinn/Azriel; waiting by the side while Em/Risa/Riley have sex with other characters.

The case itself, about a serial killing shapeshifter and the redcloaks, was pretty good; but the book itself reeked of déjà vu in both plotline and characters. If you like Riley and Risa, you'll like this. It's more of the same. Except for being a Phoinex, Em IS Riley/Risa. This book could easily fit into either series with minor changes.

Again, not bad, but I'd hoped for more; or at the very least something new and fresh.

Mon avis en Français

My English review

I loved the first book and it’s true that I waited impatiently for the second volume to see what the author had in store for us once again. I think that I was a little less carried away this time but I had again a great time with the story and the characters.

As in the first volume, a premonitory dream will launch our heroine, and Jackson, on a new investigation. Indeed, it seems that a strange creature is in town, leaving corpses in her way. As it was eating on freshly dead people, it seems that it now wants to turn to the living, and the youngest, the best. Then, it’s up to Emberly to understand what is happening and to stop the creature before it kills someone. But this quest will also lead her to cross the path of her ex, Sam, and thus to face all the feelings she is trying to bury deep within herself. Yet that’s not all … In fact, our characters will also face the consequences of the first volume, that is to say the becoming of the humans into something else because of the epidemic that is spreading elsewhere more and more. It also seems that many conspiracies are running over it all.

Many things are mixed in this novel, many events and it is quite important to remain attentive to the details not to get lost in the story. By cons, it is true that we learn a little more about the Jackson’s past, about the life of the phoenixes or even about the reason for the sudden change of attitude for Sam. I confess that I suspected about the revelation, as well as the identity of the villain of the story, but it’s true that it was interesting to learn more. By cons is true that I was really surprised by the new type of creature that Keri Arthur brought us here and the author reserves us many things about it.

Of course, the story between Sam and Emberly remains very tense and I wonder if one day the tensions will diminish a little bit so they could talk a little more about what they want both. This relationship makes me think of the one between Quinn and Riley from the Riley Jenson series and I wonder if the purpose will be the same.

In any case it was a good second book and I’m curious to see what the next book will present us.

A book for adrenaline junkies who have read (and remember) the first one. I loved the idea of a phoenix, but the story is a spin off. So, same world of Riley, similar settings. Good for fans, but not exactly new.
Still the vamp mafia is such a "fun" idea :)
Anyway, good, but not great. I never get the urge to read her books again.

Ms Arthur' stories remind me of one a friend of mine told me close to 25 years ago. She was in Melbourne (Australia), visiting a family member. They went to a disco or club one evening. After a while she went to the Ladies. But once there she was stunned to see a couple blocking the entrance...because they were having sex. In public.
Need being what it is, she went looking for someone to tell her if there was an other toilet. The barman brought her back to the same place, and, unflappable, lifted the lady's leg (still being shagged against the wall), and told my friend to get in.

So, I am not particularly shocked with the different sexuality in her books :). I have always thought of Aussie as a place with less "restraints" than either USA or Europe *grin*.

Urban fantasy, action packed, suspenseful and fast.
Emberly is flaming hot and sharing her life with her two men Rory and Jackson. Rory he life mate and Jackson her man for those lusty moments she needs. The three work well together and have each other's backs when in danger. Emberly and Jackson are working a case in their PI business that just might slightly cross the line of where Sam said not to go. They are working a case where body parts are being eaten by huge beast, and still trying to figure out the missing notes dealing with The Red Cloaks. The Red Cloaks raise the stakes becoming more dangerous with bigger numbers.
Sam, who still has the ability to break her heart a little with each visit happens to be in charge of an investigation that Eberly is having dreams about. He threatens, bullies, and snaps at Emberly every chance he gets. Such a jerk, and she loves him. The heart can be a cruel organ.
Eberly is having dreams, prolific dreams , horrific with a black beast, and death. She chases them hoping to find the answers but she is always a step behind. She speeds up the chase and risks it all when the beast starts picking younger victims.
An excellent urban fantasy, fast action, intense suspense, horror and a light touch of romance. I was left hanging with so many questions, I'm craving the next installment. Keri author has done it again.

Another fabulous series from the talented Ms. Arthur. Full disclosure, I did not read the first book in this series. I recommend reading this series in order. Still, I loved this book. Emberly is a fascinating woman who reminds me of Riley from RILEY JENSON GUARDIAN series. The bit of difference is Emberly fully accepts her poly-amorous side. Emberly the fire elemental phoenix is smart, sexy and stubborn. This is attractive in a heroine.

The world building in this story is similar to other Ms. Arthur books so it is very easy to slip right into it. The different secret organizations to police the supernatural seems to be reoccurring theme. It's a popular one because it works and in this story, it works well. The mystery part of this story is exciting and enjoyable. Trying to figure out what is happening based on the clues keeps a reader turning page after page. The dark gritty scenes are vivid and easy to imagine. Ms. Arthur paints a memorable picture with each murder scene. The backstabbing and conspiracies between different criminal factions is familiar and nicely laid out in this book. It adds to the complexity of this world and even though it seems as if there are multiple threads going in tangents, Ms. Arthur masterfully reels them all in and creates a somber picture.

This story would have been fine without the sex. Without it, it would be closer to urban fantasy. Since there is a bit of romance to it, some may quibble and categorize this as paranormal romance. Regardless of categorization, I argue the sex and the complications that come with Emberly's needs, gives Ms. Arthur this wicked edge. For those who judge poly people as sluts and believe the one true way is monogamy, move on. For those who understand and appreciate love can be shared with more than one person, Emberly's love life makes a sexy torrid twist. The secondary characters in this story are a great supporting cast. Jackson is a man of mystery. Hopefully he will feature more in the next book.

This new series bewitches me and I want to read more. After finishing this book, I immediately found the first book to read. Not sure how I missed this new series coming out. This series is not to be missed. This novel is a delicious blend of supernatural, spicy sex and violence. Highly recommended for urban fantasy readers who enjoy strong female leads who are smart and sexually confident.

I am so on the fence about how I feel about WICKED EMBERS. I really like the characters, but like other reviews have stated, they are a lot like Arthur's previous characters and it's really hard not to compare them or be a little bit bored by them and the situations they find themselves in.

The actual storyline of WICKED EMBERS was entertaining. The book starts off not long after the events of FIREBORN. There is a new serial killer case that Ember is working to solve with the help of her dreams and the redcloaks storyline continues on and the stakes get even higher. I really enjoyed learning more about the Phoenix's talents as well as their relationships with their life partners. We also get to meet some of Jackson's Fae friends which I hope to read more of in future books.

I think you would be very lost if you jumped into the Souls of Fire Series with WICKED EMBERS, so make sure you read FIREBORN before picking it up. I really enjoy Keri Arthur's writing so I don't see myself giving up on the series just yet.

I really enjoyed the first book but this one really didn't do much for me. I was pretty disappointed, I absolutely love Keri Arthur and this is the first time I've almost felt let down.

While I didn't hate this instalment, I far from loved it and I almost felt I could predict most of the storyline... Hence my disappointment.

3 stars = pretty good. Back for a second round of this sexy urban fantasy,I liked the fiery cast: Phonenix Ember, Rory, the mate she needs to survive (but Phoenix mates are cursed to not love each other), and Fire Fae Jackson, her lusty PI partner and current bed buddy. Other than the necessary sexy breaks - because both Fae and Phoenixes need lots of sex - this is mostly just a continuation of the hunt related to the red virus from the first book, and a deepening of impending darkness in the world, as Ember's dreams show her an evil flesh eating serial killing creature who is escalating to the most vulnerable of victims.

A more minimal presence of this life's heart breaker is a minus and plus - the sorrow for the loss of the love she is cursed to lose kept Ember feeling emotionally flat, but Sam was so hostile that he was annoying last time around.

At this point I am still on the fence on this series, I like the Phoenix idea, but I am less captivated by the background arc. Still the action packed ending of this book left this on a high note and some secrets revealed are promising as well. So I will likely keep an eye out for the next book.

Really enjoyed the 1st one of this series Fireborn (Souls of Fire, #1) by Keri Arthur and this one picked up straight after it.

However, if you've read any Riley Jensen you'll quickly recognise Melbourne, the badass h, battling supernatural creatures (usually vamps, but some monsters as well) under the human radar, the many love interests and the sex.

Despite the fact the h, Emberly Parson, is a phoenix, it really felt just same old, same old. Which is a shame cause we don't get many phoenix stories.

Loved the cover and I'll probably read the next one, Flameout, due July 2016, cause I do want to find out about Sam's brother Luke, and the Red Plague.

3.5 stars. Fun urban fantasy with a unique world and premise. The mystery with the evil creature was awesome and spooky, but there was a whole second plot and they didn't combine at all in this book. Definitely continuing the series, but this felt a bit like second book syndrome.

Review originally posted on my blog: A Book Obsession..

I love a strong but vulnerable heroine, especially a unique brand of character like Emberly being a Phoenix. She's incredibly powerful and yet not without limitations. She also had a huge weakness for saving others, which while not a bad thing moral wise, it's another story when it comes to her own safety. The risks she take for others is staggering, and I couldn't love her more for it. So much so that you can't help rooting for her even when you know it's almost pointless due the heartbreaking curse she's under in the romance department. I really hope to see that somehow resolve and break during this series even if I'm not the biggest fan of this "lifetime's" love. Emberly more than deserves a bit of real happiness, so as I said I'll be rooting for her.

I'm really enjoying the unique world behind this series. Not only is the main character a phoenix but the rest of the cast is very varied in species as well. This makesfor a fresh read especially now that we're two books and I have a better grasp on all that's involved. In my review of the last book I had expressed a bit of frustration with the lack of world building or full explanation of what was going on. I'm happy to say that wasn't a sticking point for me this time around. While there's still plenty of unanswered questions I didn't feel so in the dark and was able to fully immerse in the story. So if you read the first book and felt just a bit lost, I'm happy to report it's much another this time around.

All in all this was yet another fast paced and enjoyable read from one of my favorite authors. I know every time I pick up a Keri Arthur book, I'm going to have a solid block of entertainment, and this was no exception. I highly recommend to anyone who enjoys urban fantasy with a fresh world and great characters.

Wicked Embers is the second book in the Souls of Fire series, and I was curious to find out what would happen after book one left me conflicted. Although I powered through this one in no time, my feelings towards this one are quite similar to book one.

Wicked Embers had me hooked, happy to power through the pages, as there were plenty of elements that I wanted to find out more about. This one confirmed a lot of my beliefs from the first book, and I’m curious to see how they develop throughout the story. It’s certainly something a bit different, something that keeps me wanting more, but it doesn’t quite wow me. I’m curious, but I’m not in love with it.

I’m hoping the next book gives a wee bit more, as there’s a lot of potential with this series and I’m eager to see it grow.

--Actual rating 4.5 Skulls

Wicked Embers picks up where book #1 left off in true and fantastic Urban Fantasy form.

Emberly and her beau Jackson are investigating a unique and dangerous case for their shared private investigation firm and trying not to step on the toes of her cop ex, Sam, while keeping those they care about, including Emberly's life mate Rory, safe.

Emberly's dream visions kick into gear, making the case even more dangerous and intriguing, especially when they find out that everything behind the scenes is still tied to the Red Cloaks and their nefarious leader, the Grey Cloak.

As Emberly and Jackson chase down the mysterious beast wreaking havoc, their tie-in with the Red Cloak virus-afflicted becomes even more convoluted. Death and destruction await around every turn, and secrets that they wished they wouldn't have learned are revealed.

Wicked Embers was a beautifully written and gripping urban fantasy with lots of action, edge-of-your-seat suspense, thrills, and even some hot and sexy romance.

This was another stellar book by Ms. Arthur. I am loving this series almost as much as Dark Angels, and that is one of my absolute favorite UF series ever. I can't wait to see what happens next!

Arthur once again, ignites our imaginations with Wicked Embers.

Emberly, Phoenix, with the help of her partner Jackson, Fire Fae, are on the hunt to cure the plague. Searching for answers has put them in the hot seat. Some want what they have, some want to hide it away, some want revenge and some are plotting for more power.

While Emberly and Jackson are searching for truths, Emberly starts having dreams about a strange beast that is devouring the dead but its activities are escalating. Its an evil that Emberly doesn't know if she can defeat. Does she let nature take its course or will their paths crash.

Highly seductive and wonderfully action intense, Wicked Embers is an urban fantasy plot you can loose yourself in.

I received this ARC copy of Wicked Embers from PENGUIN GROUP Berkley, NAL / Signet Romance, DAW in exchange for a honest review. This book is set for publication July 7, 2015.

I really have trouble with the way Keri Arthur does romances. I really wish she would stick to a couple instead of the weird ass triangle she has going on. I did like the plot of the story and even though it took me longer than usual to finish, it was good once I really got into the story.

DNF around 100 pages. This absolutely was not the book's fault. I read the first book in the series so long ago that I don't remember it at all. Actually, the author did a really good job explaining what happened at the end of the first book all while picking up right where the first book left off and jumping into the action. And I remembered that I did like the characters, but I've been reading less and less urban fantasy and I found myself not caring where this book went and certain that I wasn't going to pick up the last two books in the series and I decided that I didn't need to keep pushing through this when I had already decided I was done with the series.
This is nothing against the book. If you read and liked the first book, and like urban fantasy, you will probably really like this one.

A creature of ash and shadow on a murdering spree is jeopardizing Emberly and Jackson’s desperate search for the stolen research for a cure for the Crimson Death plague in this thrilling urban fantasy.

Emberly’s prophetic dreams are changing and every instinct is telling her that the creature’s murderous spree is only going to escalate but with warring factions of vampires and the Gray Cloak after her she’s doesn’t have a lot of time to breath much less look for the research and the reader can’t help but get caught up in all the intrigue and action as Jackson and Emberly try to stay one step ahead of the bad guys, keep PIT happy and just survive. The characters are strong, bewitching and demand reader’s attention from the very beginning while the steady to fast paced plot keeps readers on the edge with lots of suspense, action and Emberly’s complicated love life which adds lots of flames to the story and by flames I mean that literally (really gives new meaning to setting the sheets on fire).

Building tension and expectation ensures that the reader can’t put the book down and all the exciting battles with the bad guys, not knowing exactly who all the bad guys are and some unexpected twists keeps everyone on their toes. Well written scenes and details capture the imagination and make it easy for the reader to get totally lost in the story and the well-orchestrated events ensure that there is never a dull moment.

Okay, first let me say that I have not read Firstborn (yet) as I somehow missed it but that did not stop me from enjoying this one although I do feel as if I missed a whole lot. Now, Keri Arthur always brings me the most fascinating series full of such intriguing character and refreshingly different elements and surprises, so it’s no wonder that I fell for this one because it certainly has an abundance of enjoyable qualities and Emberly is quite the heroine, so I can’t wait for more.

Review: This was a bit of a slow starter for me and starts pretty much where Fireborn left off. Emberly and her PI fire fae partner Jackson are still in search of the research notes missing from the first book and tracking down the few remaining characters that might lead to their discovery. I'm afraid I'll forget all of this by next June. Love Keri Arthur and her Riley series which was one of the first UF series I discovered when reading this genre and hooked me to series reads and all things UF and PNR, but this lacks her usual smexy moments. The characters and elements are there but barely used as in her other series. We know it's gonna happen... Just prefer sooner, especially with a year between releases.

This took me several tries to get through. I adore Keri Arthur's writing, but this just didn't have it for me. It was too slow, the love aspect too lacking. There is barely a hint or nod to romance in this series so far. She is pining away for Sam as is her curse, Sam is a complete douche at times, and Jackson I don't think is long term, though I do like him. It however, has been made clear that Fae don't really love, they have bed buddies until they need to procreate I believe.

So this story basically takes off where we left off. I'm a bit disappointed in the plot, it moved too slowly for my taste. Maybe if I wasn't reading the books as they came out and instead binge read it would have been easier to accept the slow pacing of the plot.

I'm also not sure where this story is heading in terms of how this works with Em. And who her long term love would be. I hope they can overcome the Phoenix curse though.

Overall it just took me way too long to finish this book (July to December). So it wasn't as great as I had hoped for. But that doesn't mean I'm giving up on the series though either. I may just wait for more books to be out before I pick it up again.

I am a little bit torn -- at one hand, I felt like things were really going nowhere with the investigation towards the red plague virus, but at the same time, there WERE significant information that came to surface ().

I guess the investigation felt rather repetitive and it frustrated me a bit: Em and Jackson would find clues, they would kick some of the 'lower players' ass, then they would encountered PIT, and then the villains would have another move, then Em and Jackson followed the clues, they fought again, and encountered PIT ... and rinse and repeat. In between, we had Em reminding us readers that Sam is the love of her lifetime this time but Rory is her life mate -- while Jackson the fae doesn't want commitment, so it's good to have sex with him from time to time. Well, at least the sex part was toned down a bit.

So at times I would skim the story because I started to lose interest, but then I liked the new information provided.

I guess I will still try to read book #3 and see how I will go from there.

Disappointing.

After I finished book one, I could hardly wait for the second to be released. However, I was slightly disappointed.

Unfortunately, this book fell into what I like to call 'the second book bridge syndrome'. While it still had all of the authors signature flare, steamy romance, and kick butt characters; it literally was just a bridge from book one to three.

It tired up some of the questions left from book one and set the stage quite nicely for book three hence my nickname of 'the second book bridge syndrome'. So honestly, it was kinda boring for me, especially seeing as how the 'monster' in this book felt like an afterthought and want really important to the bigger story.

So, there you have it. It wasn't awful but it wasn't great and I expect a bit more from this author.

Wicked Embers was an ok read! It started out slowly with a dream and the pace didn't pick up until a third of the way into the story. They're still looking for the scientist's notes for the virus, nothing has been resolved. A new character has been added to the mix but I'm not sure why because it has nothing to do with the storyline.
