Scandalous gossip, wild parties, and forbidden love—the Greek tale of Hades and Persephone gets a romantic modern update in the gorgeously illustrated, Eisner Award-winning Lore Olympus, including a brand new bonus short story!
“The Underworld has a queen!”
Persephone and Hades are finally reunited when the banished goddess of spring returns to the Underworld to claim her rightful place as queen. Now that Hades and Persephone have defeated and imprisoned the power-hungry Kronos once more, nothing can keep them apart, and years of being separated have only made their desire for each other grow. But the other Olympians can’t help but meddle, pushing the pair to make things official with a coronation—and a wedding.
Ignoring the others who try to define their relationship, Hades and Persephone choose to take things at their own pace and focus on rebuilding the Underworld. They begin by investigating how Kronos was first able to escape, and they learn the horrifying truth that he has captured a powerful young god whose abilities help Kronos project his thoughts outside of Tartarus—thoughts he uses to plague Hera’s every waking moment. Though Kronos’s physical form is locked away, Olympus will never be free until they can rescue the child from the furious Titan’s grasp.
To save the realms, Persephone must figure out her fertility goddess powers and embrace her role as Queen of the Underworld—even as it takes her further from her mother’s expectations and her former place in the Mortal Realm.

"IF EYES COULD EAT, LORE OLYMPUS WOULD BE A FEAST." —NEW YORK TIMES BOOK REVIEW
“I will love you, even when all the mortals have forgotten about us and we are nothing but stardust.”
this was a really good installment! we still have themes of healing, in all the different ways, at the forefront of this story, but we also get to see the underworld thriving with a queen who is rebuilding her new home with her king. and seeing persephone want to experience everything, without missing out on anything, to truly be the person she wants to be? oh, it was just everything.
and we also get to see so much backstory from other characters within this volume. like, i really was shedding some tears over minthe! and i think that really speaks to this author being such a good story teller. and a reminder that i am still (and forever) obsessed with daphne. and lastly, we love a timely and educational katabasis word drop moment! lol >.<
cws from the author at the start of this book: physical + mental abuse, sexual trauma, + toxic relationships
other tw/cw i wrote down: blood, nightmares, neglectful parents in past, mention of loss of mom in past
I read this for free on webtoons but I will end up buying a physical copy because the art is gorgeous. 😍
Honestly these ratings are purely based on vibes. I'm writing these reviews after finishing the entire webtoon so it's hard to pinpoint specific plots and I noted the ratings whilst reading. The story is so good I love the modern spins and twists on greek mythology and their story.
Lore Olympus volume 9 by Rachel Smythe Woww wow wow , I loved Hades and Persephone’s love, passion, heartbreak and growth threw out the books. The art is mesmerising and this world was truly beautiful. “I will love you, even when all the mortals have forgotten about us and we are nothing but stardust.” 😭 turns out there’s gonna be a 10tgh so it’s not the last thank god 😩 Rating:⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
Read on Webtoon! These episodes were so good. I’m really enjoying where the story is going and I’m excited to see what happens next. I love the art and these characters are written with great depth.
Persephone and Hades deal with repercussions from last volume's big finale, some awkwardness and intimacy issues, and Demeter's desire to keep them apart.
The book thrives whenever Persephone and Hades talk to one another, but the need for a plot always interferes, dropping in a bunch of characters who are sometimes not well introduced and getting mired in time skips and explanations of past actions.
It does finish with a bang though! In more ways than one.

It's time to delve into the color theory. Basically this involves speculation and evidence we've gathered about the characters in the comic so far and can be wrong on different occasion. The colors associated with each character represent primary personality attributes. While their entire personality cannot be fully encapsulated by these colors, they do highlight one or two key aspects of their character.
Purple: Emotionally motivated
This one seems the most obvious to me, as every character on this list is highly affected by their emotions. Zeus and Aphrodite are the key examples, with basically every action they take based on how they feel at the time. Artemis, Apollo and Megaera have their world views significantly shaped by their emotions, for example Apollo isn't just a narcissist, he genuinely believes everyone loves him;
Blue: Logically motivated
As a counterpoint to purple, characters that feature blue seem very unlikely to make decisions without thinking them through. Hades can't help himself sometimes around Persephone, but for the most part is overthinking everything all the time. In Thanatos' case, even though is actions are based in emotions, he has to rationalize them before he acts, and even Thetis is straight up scheming. Hera is also shown to think things through and operate on evidence and logic as much as she can.
Pink: Empathy
I think this one basically speaks for its self. Minus the characters we know very little about, Persephone, Eros and Daphne are all incredibly empathic people.
Yellow/Gold: Ego
This one was a lot harder to place. What I think connects the primary and secondary color holders is that they all have a strong sense of self, and their actions and motivations tend to reflect that. Hera, Ares and Eris absolutely will not alter their behavior to suit the people around them, and Apollo wouldn't if he didn't need to, but it is clearly a massive struggle for him those times when he needs to check his behavior.
Orange: Entrepreneurial or Pioneering
Hephaestus basically built the tech industry from scratch. Hestia created TGOEM and organizes civic projects. Chiron pioneered both medicine and psychology. Metis created Demeter, Hestia and Hera (created, not birthed). We've only seen him in silhouette, but I would bet money that Prometheus is also orange (his silhouette background is orange even). The common theme for all these characters is that they are somehow at the forefront of creation and industry. I couldn't really think of a better word than 'entrepreneurial'.
Green: Social awareness
My evidence here is a little bit shakier, but I think what connects these characters is that they all have some degree of focus on interpersonal relationships or social standing. For example, Demeter runs a large business, but seems to use much more direct personal interaction than the well oiled corporate machine of the underworld. Poseidon meanwhile is the only of the three brothers who seems to already understand relationship dynamics, and says things like "We are meant to discuss things like this as a group" (referring to the triarchy) and "is this how the trial proceedings are supposed to go?", showing concern for social structures being maintained.
Red: Truth/Honesty (I know, stick with me)
ok so my first question was Why are Hermes and Minthe the same color? What exactly do they have in common? Well in my opinion the answer to that is, they are both extremely direct and honest, even genuine. Listen, I don't like Minthe either, but there is a reason that Hades was attracted to her in the first place, and I think that is in large part her willingness to speak truth to authority.
When she is being toxic, she doesn't lie or manipulate, instead she weaponizes the truth (or what she/others believe is true) to hurt. And when she goes to far, she knows it and can't lie to herself. Hermes, meanwhile, while he does lie to protect Persephone, is visibly uncomfortable every time it comes up, and avoids answering rather than lying when he can. He is also probably the most open and genuine character in the whole story.
Black/Midnight blue: Mystery/secrets
Black is sort of the universal symbol for mystery so I don't think this one is a stretch. Hecate is basically the god queen of mysteries. Artemis is a legendarily secretive/private person.
Hades, Ares and Eris all have red irises, and Ares and Eris also have red coloration on their face. I think that all of them also show an inclination towards truth and honesty. Now the elephant in the room of course is, what about the Eyes of Wrath(tm)? Well, I think that like solid yellow eyes representing primordial chaos, solid red eyes are clearly associated with a sort of primordial wrath, and I think don't really have anything to do with the primary colors.
White/Grey or maybe seprately: transparency, and isolation.
This works on a couple of different levels- subtle can have connotations of being hard to see or pay attention to, which Athena embodies in her quiet demeanor and limited-but-significant interactions, and Thanatos struggles with as Minthe and the greater Underworld downplay his attentions or contributions.this also makes it a great color for air nymphs for obvious reasons. Hades and Hestia also share this trait as 'unseen' or 'out-of-focus' gods- Hades's impact is indisputable but one of his titles is literally 'the unseen one' and the process of death is referred to obliquely
I felt like not a whole lot happened in this book. It was likely just a wind up for stuff to happen in the next one. As always, the art is gorgeous! Very interested in the next one!
I don't know if the series is dragging on too long, but I am slowly caring less and less. Not only that, I forgot to reread book 8 before this and man I definitely had to look up what happened in that book because I forgot a lot and it made it harder to read this one. My favorite part of this series is the illustrations, they are top notch and so vibrant. I feel like we are getting closer to the end so I plan on sticking around to see it completed, I'm just losing a little steam.
Such a cute webtoon! Hades and Persephone love story is always a classic, you can’t go wrong.
I adored the art style — unique and fitting. It would really drag you into the story, and through shapes and colours make you feel the grandness/fragility of the gods.
Persephone’s story is full of highs and lows, trauma, pain, and healing. It’s not hard to sympathise with her. She’s not perfect, but she’s always true to herself and with pure intentions.
In conclusion, Kore, you really are a Femininomenon! 🌸
I don't want to say I'm getting tired of this story, because I'm clearly still here, but it's definitely not quite as fresh and exciting as it used to be.
A lot of it might have to do with Hades and Persephone finally being together, which is nice and feels like a good pay-off, but it essentially resolves the whole premise of the story. As we're used to by now, the other Olympians all have opinions about this relationship and can't help but meddle, which is what this volume is about: Persephone must embrace her role as the Queen of the Underworld in spite of her mother's wishes and the couple begins to learn more about Kronos.
Persephone and her mother aren't on the same page yet. Demeter is in denial about her daughter's love for Hades and tries to make her see clearly (in her eyes). It's a sign of Persephone's character growth that she is able to hold her own and stand up for her own interests, despite someone close to her directly opposing her choices.
We briefly check back in with Minthe. And it's hilarious! One of my favourite sequences in this volume, probably, because it turns out Rachel Smythe's children are not only super cute-looking, but a great source of comic relief.
The deeper dive into emotional subjects remains a strength. I still think it's sweet how Persephone's and Hades' relationship is full of green flags, unconditional love and direct communication. In a genre that loves drama, hardships and personal trauma, it's a breath of fresh air to spend time with a solid couple who loves to sensibly and empathetically speak about all their issues and insecurities.
I feel ready for the show-down. I think we've got two more books after this one and part of why this particular volume felt like a drag despite still featuring most of the elements that made me fall in love with this series in the first place is that it feels like we're just preparing for the finale now. There are few true conflicts left except for Kronos needing to be dealt with. So I'm just getting impatient. Let's bring him down! Now!
*3.5 I definitely think this may be the weakest of the volumes. It didn’t really have a strong through line and I often found myself bored at the meandering-ness of it.
I did like the Aphrodite and Hephaestus scenes - they made me so emo omg. Also the bonus scene that was included in the BN exclusive edition was amazing. Demeter continues to be infuriating…
I think volume 10 might be the last one? So I guess one more to go!
20/07/2025 4 ⭐ A pretty underwhelming volume tbh. I feel like the series should be well and truly wrapping up now, if not fully wrapped up and just waiting for a big bow to go on top, but somehow there's still a bunch of things unresolved...
Hm. I’m not sure how to rate this one. It barely gave us anything, did it? No real revelations, much of the same lovey-dovey Persephone and Hades scenes and a frustrated Demeter. This felt like a lot of filler material, without much substance. I was a bit frustrated at the end of the book, NGL.
5 ⭐️ 1 🌶 I just absolutely love this series! We get to witness Hades and Persephone FINALLY get the quality time they deserve. This book really highlights Persephone's personal growth - not only with her relationship with Hades but within herself as well. She's gaining confidence in herself and her position in Olympus, and she's such a delight to read. She also faces her estranged, gaslighter mother Demeter, whom there is a super messy confrontation with that gave me the ick towards Demeter. But Hades was there to turn the moment around into something truly beautiful! Also, the bonus chapter does contain a little more heat if you know what I'm saying 😏
And again I sob! <3 This is such a good book! It's about healing from not only her SA but from her Mother's expectations and breaking away from needing her mom's approval. And her and Hades are of course still so damn cute.
I cannot recommend this series enough. Adorable artwork and just a knock you out story. We're nearing the end and it's still pulling the heart strings in all the right ways.
I enjoyed this ninth volume of the Lore Olympus Graphic novel series. There was a lot of plot development, I liked the progress that Kore and Hades made in their relationship. As always there was excellent mental health and trauma content and things were left on a cliffhanger that has me eager for volume ten!!
rating this a 3 rn cuz i read 95% of this volume on webtoon while it was updating and remembered to check the new chapters 2 years later so i don't remember much... yay ❤️
