In Why Beethoven Threw the Stew , renowned cellist Steven Isserlis sets out to pass on to children a wonderful gift given to him by his own cello teacher - the chance to people his own world with the great composers by getting to know them as friends. Witty and informative at the same time, Isserlis introduces us to six of his favorite the sublime genius Bach, the quicksilver Mozart, Beethoven with his gruff humor, the shy Schumann, the prickly Brahms and that extraordinary split personality, Stravinsky. Isserlis brings the composers alive in an irresistible manner that can't fail to catch the attention of any child whose ear has been caught by any of the music described, or anyone entering the world of classical music for the first time. The lively black and white line illustrations provide a perfect accompaniment to the text, and make this book attractive and accessible for children to enjoy on their own or share with an adult.
This is an excellent book for youngsters interested in music. Steven Isserlis, a cellist, has written a very enthusiastic (his playing is also passionate) introduction to JS Bach, Mozart, Beethoven, Schumann, Brahms and Stravinsky. Each composer gets a full chapter with three sections. In the first, Isserlis attempts to demystify the composer and presents him as an approachable human being made of flesh and bones. A selected listening guide follows, and in the third and final section, Isserlis gives us a series of funny and memorable episodes. Attractive cartoons by Adam Stower illustrate the stories, and each Master is identified with a quirk (hedgehog for Brahms, hard boiled egg for Stravinsky... etc).
The goal is to create an amicable persona for each Master.
The best about the book is Isserlis’s contagious rapture and love of music. And although his anecdotes are welcome as a way to make these composers more approachable, I found some just a bit clichéd, such as the supposed rivalry between Mozart and Salieri. There is also too much attention paid to the insanity of Schumann and little to his major role as a music theoretician and critic.
I agree with Isserlis in that if a cruel genie were to send me to a desert island with the music of only ONE composer, I would also chose JS Bach.
As for his playing, I already own his recording on Debussy’s and Poulenc’s Cello sonatas, but am considering getting his interpretation of Bach’s suites.
Fun, entertaining and fact filled children's (and adult's) book about Bach, Mozart, Beethoven, Schumann, Brahms and Stravinsky. Each chapter has an entertaining preamble with anecdotes of the composer's life, a section in layman's terms (complete with glossary at the end!) of the music including where to start, and then an entertaining blow by blow biography. I thoroughly enjoyed it and hope I'll get my kids to enjoy it with me (and thus perhaps circumvent a catastrophe such as their becoming Justin Bieber fans (-shiver-)
Szívemből ajánlom ezt a könyvet mindenkinek, aki érdeklődik a komolyzene iránt. Steven Isserlis világhírű csellista hat kedvenc zeneszerzőjét mutatja be úgy, hogy a szerzemények mögött magát a zeneszerzőt, mint embert is megismerhetjük. Több ez, mint megismerkedés. Ugyanis ezek a történetek életrekeltik a zeneszerzőket.
It's fun and witty. U can feel the composers walking passed u while youre reading the book. It's not only an interesting book for childeren, but actually for all music lovers.
When Mr. Steven Isserlis attended a morning event in Annapolis with folks who support the Symphony, he noted that he was also an author. He mentioned the names of two books he had written for children about composers. One was “Why Beethoven threw the Stew”, another was “Why Handel Waggled his Wig”. As a former Library Director, I was very curious about what he wrote. The Anne Arundel Library did not have either book. They were printed in England. I asked them to find them somewhere in the country. There is only 1 copy of each title in a library in the US. The first was in Berlin, Wisconsin. The other was at Triton College, River Grove, Illinois. I have no idea why either library bought them. I just read them. Both books would interest any adult or child that did not know about: Bach, Mozart, Beethoven, Schumann, Brahms, Stravinsky, Handel, Haydn, Schubert, Tchaikovsky, Dvorak, or Faure. There is just enough written about each composer. Each musician’s story follows a pattern: an introduction, a bit about how they composed music, what to listen to, and facts about their life, all told in an engaging very humorous manner.
Now that I am finished reading them, I see they are available on Kindle.
Read this as part of Cole's torchlight curriculum . I highly enjoyed it and thought the writing was quirky and fun! It was a great way to learn more about some great composers. We played the music recommended by the author at the end of each chapter as we were reading the chapters. There is a lot of talk about alcoholism, partying, suicide, and mental illness (although the artist never literally says the composer was mentally ill.) which some parents may want to avoid. But if you REALLY want to learn who the composer was a person then these topics can't be ignored. I really enjoyed the book but I also felt like it was a lot to squeeze in with my 8 year old boy in just 5 days.
A well researched collection of six mini biographies of famous composers: Bach, Mozart, Beethoven, Schumann, Brahms, and Stravinsky. I like that Isserlis gave these hyper-specific, strange, and sometimes unsavoury details about the composers lives and habits that I never knew.
The book is written in a very accessible manner (as children are the intended audience), which I believe accomplishes two things: 1. Makes it easy to read. 2. Creates this feeling of 'closeness'. Even though these composers were/are super legendary, in many ways they were still very much like us and the people around us. It's humanizing!
This book by a classical cellist is a great starter for children or young adults who want to learn interesting things about some of the best classical composers. Not only will you learn interesting character querks, you will also get a short descibtion of composers' life and even a short guide on which music should you listen first if you're just starting out with listening to classical music. I was most fascinated by Schumann's character traits and Beethoven's life as well as Stravinsky's peculiar way of composing and descibing music! It's a fun but certainly also an informative book.
Most tongue in cheek, certainly, and largely overpowered by the author's personal sentiments about each of the composers profiled within - but that's what gives the book its humor and charm, too. I found it pretty enjoyable to read. I appreciated that Isserlis gave a handful of suggestions for works to start off with in getting to know the body of work that each composer has, because they're vast and somewhat indecipherable to a neophyte.
The book is a brief look at various composers' life, works, and quirks. It does provide some interesting factoids throughout, which I liked, but I didn't enjoy the writing style at times. It went between giving historical info to then writing asides or extra commentary, often punctuated with a liberal use of exclamation points. (I just prefer books without these additional bits.)
Definitely a must read for those interested in classical music or famous musicians! I really love the way Steven Isserlis wrote about the composers! And also the funny cartoons that tagged along with it.
I'm still not exactly sure how to rate this book. I guess one has to be more of a classical music fan to appreciate this little book. Though some aspects of the book were interesting. I give this book 2.5 stars.
Amusing read, although it's for children I still found some new information in it. Especially like the music recommendations, it's a creative way to turn kids to great composers.
Tavsiye ederim.
