I knew the second I got a chance to read "The Girls' Book Of Glamour: A Guide To Being A Goddess" by Sallie Jeffrie I was in for a treat. Part "etiquette guide for girls" and part "life skills tips" it's a comprehensive how-to manual geared for the Young Adult market in a time of conflicting media and societal messages, that're making a lot of women feel insecure about themselves. This book does just the opposite, it strives to make the reader feel good about themselves, instead.
Some parts satirize Hollywood and the fashion industry in sections on "How to Put On a Fashion Show", "How to Air-Kiss", and "How to Give a Great Interview" but then others give profound advice any woman would benefit from. Personally I found the tips on "How to Apply Eye Shadow", "How to Create Your Own Personal Style", and "How to Accessorize Fabulously" to be invaluable, and easy to follow.
Designed by Zoe Quayle and illustrated by Nellie Ryan, at 126 pages, this book is an extremely easy read that had me going over it again and again in pursuit of more how-to magic.

This book belongs to Simone. But one day, when Rena and I were eating in her room (it's a long long story involving Golden Week), my eyes happened to fall upon this book. It just so happens that I had lent her my "Friends" book (same series) so the books looked like a set when my eyes fell upon them. So before I begin, I should start with my friend's comment "The friends book seems to be written for older people and the glamour book for kids."

And you know what? Her comment sums up the two books perfectly (now, if you're lazy or don't feel like reading, you can stop here). The glamour book is basically on how to be more feminine (I guess that's how they define glamour).

What was nice about this book was that it had practical (if often heard) tips on protecting your skin, taking care of your hair, etc. Most of this stuff is found in any beauty book, but it is written in a way that would appeal to younger girls.

What I didn't like about this book was how at times, it seemed to encourage one to behave like a brat. Things like How To Convince People You're A Celebrity and How to Convince People You're A Hand Model have suggestions like "be unreasonable wherever you go" and getting your parents to "insure your hands for a million dollars." While these articles are very very few, it was enough to put a bad taste in my mouth.

Overall, this is a nice book for girls. It's a bit simple for anyone over say, 15, but it generally has positive messages. But do beware the few "celebrity" sections. It may be modeled on how celebrities seem to behave, but that's no reason to encourage others to behave like them.

[Read a long time ago. Can't remember rating. I do remember when my mom bought me this book while in line at a TJ Maxx. It's been years since I've read it, but I feel like there was a how to write a message with invisible ink activity. Or, maybe that was the Daring Boys book?]

I thought it would be worse. Kudos to Sally Jeffrie for making it for what it is, seeing especially as I'm not usually into these kind of books.

Note: This review DOES contain spoilers of the events in the book, so if you have not read it before and wish to discover the secrets of the book for yourself, it is not suggested that you read this. --A.M.G.

Don't understand why, but this book really calms me down when I read it. Treating every girl as if she is a goddess with beauty accepted in every which-way, I encourage girls of all ages to read this and try some things out. Visually appealing as well, just the drawings are enough to make me want to try some of the suggestions.

I haven't tried all of the experiments myself, but here are some of the ones that I have tried and which have proved to be effective.

How To Eat Your Way To Beautiful Skin/How To Get The Shiniest Hair Ever
Usually I only try the experiments that I think will really benefit me, and from the list, this is one I knew I had to try. One of the suggestions is to eat a lot of fruit, but since I'm a picky person with my food, instead I chose the easier option of drinking a lot of water. You become a water baby in no time, and it does get you hair shinier, as well as gives you better, hydrated skin!

How To Turn Bathtime Into A Relaxing Treat
Some things work more than others, but bubble bath is definitely recommended, and besides which, it gets your skin smelling nice and feeling smooth. The only thing you'll be missing is a rubber ducky.

How To Jazz Up A Boring Ponytail
Recently I've gotten a haircut, so the natural volume of my hair now takes over, but before I used to be able to do nothing but tie my hair up with a headband and leave it at that. But following some of the pieces of advice in the book will help you keep organized with what things you may or may not want to do. Experimenting with your hair is fun!

How to Have A Good Night's Sleep
For those who've read it, you'll know what I mean. They suggest this "box" trick for your worries, and it always helps me a lot. Any one of the suggestions is good for a night of rest and pleasant dreams.

How to Figure Out Your Face Shape
More beneficial than you'd think, and surprisingly fast!

How To Make Your Eyes Look Brighter
The most interesting thing I have ever tried. And it actually does work, though you'll need to wet a towel for it. It also produces a calming effect on your eyes though and gets them shiny as well.

All Hair Techniques and Suggestion
With washing, conditioning, and blow-drying, all of their suggestions have become my weekly routine.

All in all, a nice book to read and fun experiments to try.

The Girls book of glamour :a guide to being a goddess by Sally Jeffrie is another great book in the series. The awesome tells more ways to have a glamorous life.Like how to tie dye a t-shirt and how to make a door curtain. It was fun to read a book like this and be able to read a book that was at my level and was non-fiction.The book was created to make you feel confident, glamorous, gorgeous and be the goddess you were meant to be .If you are looking for a book that suits you I would highly suggest to read this book.It had great tips for girls and was even better than the first book.I would recommend it to anybody who wants a just right non-fiction book to read for fun.Sally Jeffrie did it again and found the most useful tips to be glamorous.

i found some the information giving in this book to be false, such as the proper temperature to wash your hair. Some of the tips also don't work for certain girls like myself because this book is based off a typical European-American in my opinion and what seems to be in all of the pictures.

I thought the book was really helpful to be honest, from helping you find out how to dress based on the shape of your face to making a relaxing bath there are many helpful tips that all of us could use. There are definity some things that we might never use but they're still funny and it is not taking away from the important information in the book. For example how to gracefully exit a limo, this might be an important skill to certain people one day but average people don't need to know this information. But then around this page are helpful tips like how to get rid of puffy eyes or how to clean your makeup brushes. Overall I think this book can help young girls be more confident and I think that there are definitely things we could all use.

I decided to reread this so that I could officially mark it as read. But I already had marked it as read. What a waste of time.

Now, as an adult, I recognize that a lot of this is kinda tongue-in-cheek and not meant to be taken seriously (like all the guides to act like a celebrity), but as a child I took it in earnest. And as a child, the final page about “How to be a Goddess,” as well as the title, made me deeply uncomfortable.

There’s some things in here that are interesting, like how to French braid or pretend to do the Flamenco, but this book is just not for me. It was never for me. It’s the girl’s book of glamour, and I am not that kind of girl.

Very cute and whimsical, I wish I had something like this growing up. It was filled with lots of practical advice as well a beauty recipes and just a touch of fantasy. I will definitely be saving it for all the tween and preteen girls in my life.

Cute

Cute book, but has the potential to get kids in trouble. I would have had big problems with my parents if I had decided to pretend to be a hand model and refused to do any chores involving my hands. Lots of fun ideas and DIY tips though.

For what it is, I thought it was pretty interesting. I didn’t gain any new insight into myself or whatnot, but I don’t think that was the goal. It’s supposed to be a fun little book on little tips to improve yourself and the more non-serious tips were great. It’s a non serious casual book. I didn’t expect anything more from it.

Adorable little scholastic book for young girls. It's fun and semi-anecdotal. I think it's perfect for a pre-teen. Super quick read for adults. Has some fun tips and tricks for young girls to navigate their pre-teens. I'd buy this for my daughter (if I had one).
