In a world where secrets are as dangerous as spells, love might be the most powerful magic of all…
Clio Blair is a fire witch—gifted, defiant, and hiding more than just her magic. With the power to speak to the dead and glimpse their final memories, she’s called in by her uncle at Scotland Yard to help solve the murder of Viscount Beachley. His ghost lingers, his wife is missing, and the trail leads straight into the glittering world of the ton… where Clio has no place.
Enter Lieutenant General Thomas Grey: brooding, scandal-shadowed, and bound by honour to assist the investigation. He never expects to be paired with a sharp-tongued witch who walks with ravens and burns like fire beneath her skin. As they’re forced into close quarters and dangerous secrets begin to surface, so does a desire neither of them can resist.
But Clio knows a witch’s heart is a dangerous thing to give away—especially to a man who swore never to love again. And Thomas knows desire alone won’t protect her from the dead who would use her, or the living who would destroy her.
Solving the murder may save them both—but surrendering to passion could consume them completely.
Clio Blair is a fire witch hiding a few secrets. Since she can speak to the dead, her uncle at Scotland Yard asks her to help solve the murder of Viscount Beachley. For this, Clio has to enter the ton, a world different from her own.
Lieutenant General Thomas, though shadowed by a scandal, feels honor-bound to assist in the investigation and gets paired with Clio. The brooding man may not want anything to do with her, but with the dead and the living intent on causing harm, he and Clio have to fight to stay alive and maybe for their future together, too.
The story comes in Clio and Thomas’s third-person POVs.
My Thoughts
Well, I read the author’s books before and know what to expect. Romance takes center stage, and the rest is more of a subplot. This is a brand new series with witches as the female leads.
The setting is London, with some witches in hiding and living like ordinary folk. The FMC comes from one such family/coven, with a sister, cousin, and aunt (I hope the aunt gets her own book).
The MMC is grumpy and weighed down by his past. His initial interactions with the FMC are rude, though it does fit the period. However, he gets better as the story progresses. We also know more about his past, which shows why he was an idiot in the beginning.
The FMC is a fire witch, and her character is quite true to this. I liked her quite a lot, especially her familiar, a talking raven named Sir Robin Goodfellow.
The world-building related to witchy powers is well done. There is enough information to understand the characters and events without being bogged down by pages of description.
The mystery is like a catalyst for the love story, so it is fairly straightforward (despite the red herrings). You will be disappointed if you read it as a mystery.
And of course, there is spice, quite a bit of it too (3.5+). I ended up reading books with some BDSM and kink back-to-back. Unintentional, but okay!
The ending is solid and makes this a standalone. The title for the next book is out, so I know who the FMC is, but no idea about the MMC.
To summarize, The Bewitching Miss Blair is a steady-paced witchy romance set in 19th-century London. There’s a murder to solve and ghosts to meet on the side, while the characters find their HEA.
Thank you, NetGalley and Boldwood Books, for the eARC. This review is voluntary and contains my honest opinion about the book.
I wonderful start to a series! I think I understand Darcy McGuire's formula for series: a group of young women with secrets each get a book and then their older mentor gets the finale. I hope that's how this new series will go.
We have three young women with forbidden magical abilities being raised by an uncle who works for Scotland Yard and a taciturn aunt, also with magical powers. The uncle asks the oldest of his wards, Clio, for help with an investigation, the murder of a Viscount and the disappearance of his wife. Clio can interact with the dead and the hope is that the Viscount will tell all once Clio earns his trust.
Lieutenant General Thomas is a friend of the uncle's and will help Clio access society circles so she can investigate. She reluctantly collaborates with him while trying to conceal her magical abilities. Of course that doesn't work and we get to see Thomas evolve from starchy to more open minded as he witnesses her abilities and the physical abuse she's experienced at the hands of angry ghosts.
While there is a tiny bit of violence, it serves to bring our main characters together and we get to see Thomas' protective instincts. The scenes with the other witches makes me eager to see them each get their own books!
📖 Bookish Thoughts I’ll be sharing my full review closer to publication date.

Gut rating: ⭐⭐⭐⭐ CAWPILE rating: 4.07 Spice: Open door BDSM ARC publication date: March 1st 2026
Tropes: Brooding MMC and stubborn FMC, witch and human romance, private detective, opposites attract, dual POV, forced proximity, stolen kisses, "who did this to you!?", dark secrets
Quote: Sparks. Fire. Heat. She is a living flame. Would my fingers burn if I touched her?
My synopsis In 1866 London, where magic remains a carefully guarded secret, 25yo white-witch Clio Blair works as a private detective, using her rare witchfire and kleptomaniac raven familiar to help lingering spirits find peace and move on.
When a prominent Viscount is murdered and his wife mysteriously disappears, Clio's investigation is pushed outside her social circle. To infiltrate high-society, she's forced to partner with the brooding 35yo Lieutenant General Sir Thomas Grey - a dangerously attractive man shadowed by his scandalous, messy divorce.
As their investigation leads them to the countryside for an intimate house party with the victim's family, they must navigate dangerous secrets, the stuffy upper echelon, and Clio's disturbing prophetic visions. With sparks literally flying between them, can they keep their hands (and secrets) to themselves, or will their flames explode the investigation?
My review What a thrilling story, with a perfect balance between a growing romance and the mystery investigation.
I love a witty sharp tongued woman having to work with a brooding stubborn (but secretly sweet) man. The forced proximity created such fun interactions, with sexual tension (literally) sparking between them as their stubborn natures and growing attraction clashed. Her witchfire played really well into their romance, with the heat emanating from them both creating some unfortunate accidents. With their deep connection, it's a shame the spicy scenes were so short and filled with cringy, outdated terms like "mons" and "channel".
I really enjoyed exploring the secrets they kept from one another, and their character growth was so sweet.
The big infodump at the start made things a little murky to begin with. This was particularly the constant references to a defining event/accident Clio had suffered through. It felt like I was missing out on a really interesting story and important part of her background. I assume the plan may be a prequel novella, although this feels like a standalone story with the romance already at it's peak.
With thanks to the Publishers and NetGalley for providing me with this ARC. I am leaving this review voluntarily.

Darcy really excels at a few things immediately highlighted in this book: laying the groundwork for an epic series and creating MCs who ride the line between hating each other and hating how attracted to each other they are. It’s hot, delicious, and leads to immediate tension between the pair. Clio Blair is a fire witch and can speak to the dead. The latter of which she uses to help her Uncle Lachlan with his investigations for Scotland Yard. When a viscount is mysteriously murdered, and his wife goes missing, leaving behind their daughter, Clio is called in to help. Paired with Lachlan’s best friend and old war buddy, Thomas Grey, the sparks start sparking instantly! A reluctant pair of investigators, the two must learn to work together while keeping their own personal secrets. Between hiding her magic and attraction to the brooding lord, Clio also needs to figure out why her magic becomes unhinged when he’s around. Could it be the elusive spirit match that destroyed both her mother and aunt?
As always, this author delivers on creating a compelling world and premise I’m eager to dive more into. I enjoyed the push-pull between Clio and Grey, and particularly loved how their HEA played out. That said, I quickly grew bored of the bedroom power dynamics between Clio and Grey - “good girl” and D/s dynamics can be really hot, but the market is oversaturated and this didn’t bring me anything original in that space. While it did make sense for the characters and their dynamic, I just wasn’t as invested in this part of their love story. The mystery element delivered, and although I had a suspicion of where this was going to go based on the foreshadowing in the beginning, I was still entertained and gasping at the reveal. While the witchcraft elements of this immediately pulled me into the story, the sparky chemistry between our MCs and the murder mystery had me so invested. Another series starter that sucked me in from Darcy!
4/5 I’m also going to need an HEA for Rowan and Lachlan, two characters who had me immediately gripped in their clutches- what is their history and where can I get more of it?!
‘The Bewitching Miss Blair’ was the perfect read for me whilst I was waiting for the second half of Bridgerton season 4. The book is inspired by Bridgeton and features a few similarities however ‘The Bewitching Miss Blair’ takes you on its own magical journey, there is a sense of uniqueness and it’s a lot more light hearted with added comedy.
There are some nice lengthy chapters that have exquisite levels of detail, it’s clear that so much creativity and thought lies within the storyline, the world building and even the clothes were described immaculately. You can tell that a lot of research has been done on the era the book is set in and it has truly blown me away.
Having Clio as a main character based in 1866 made ‘The Bewitching Miss Blair’ empowering and intriguing. Women in this era were frequently dismissed and had a lack of rights, so seeing Clio as this empowering independent character and taking charge and being the boss was absolutely lovely to see, she knew what she wanted, she knew what to do and how to solve the mystery and so she went with it and didn’t take any nonsense and this is what made the romance side of the story so satisfying. She seemed to love being by herself but then another character comes along and falls in love with her and we can see just truly how much they fall for each other.
I enjoyed the connections between characters, they all stuck together and this is what friendships should be like. I definitely enjoyed having a name twin for the time being with the character ‘Helena’, however my favourite character was ‘Sir Robin Goodfellow’ Clio’s pet Raven, what an iconic bird, I was in fits and giggles a lot of the time over his foul language and sassy attitude.
As a whole, I thoroughly enjoyed the witchy mystery to this wonderful historical fiction and I can imagine this to be a TV series I would get hooked on. ‘The Bewitching Miss Blair’ had the perfect amount of spice, entertainment, romance and seriousness and it makes for an engaging read!
If you’re a lover of a magical romance with spice then this is the book for you but be warned, you won’t be able to put the book down!
Thank you LBT for having me on this book review tour and for my gifted copy of this epub.
This book was so full of magic and fun and tensions and smart. The author does such a good job laying the ground work for this to hopefully please yes become a series cause I’m attached already to these characters and I need more and I hope we have more !!
So Clio Blair is a fire witch and is called in to help her uncle although I don’t really think he’s her real uncle but anyways she is called in to help with the murder of Vicount Beachley. She has a raven as her familiar and she can also communicate and see ghosts as part of her abilities which I find so cool. I think if I were to have powers of any kind I would want the ability to talk to and see ghosts. Gosh that would be cool. I mean I think I would kinda freaked out at first but then I would be great !!! Anyways sorry back to the book Clio uses her abilities to help with murder investigating.
They also have Lieutenant General Thomas Grey helping with the investigation in another way. His job is to help with the high ranking rich people !! He is kinda a grump and sexist and really closed off but then he realizes Clio is a witch and he soon thinks he’s falling for her. Crazy right lol. I loved this so much in this book.
I loved so much about this book. Aunt Rowan and her sisters is something I really want to learn more about for sure. I also loved the apothecary portion and want to learn more that cause I find that fascinating!!!
Although this was a murder mystery we did focus a lot on Grey and Clio and their building relationship I loved Grey’s sister I want her as my sister !!!
Overall I need more. I just feel like so much more is needed and I want more. So please can we get more I sure hope so. I said that a lot I know but I just loved this read so much !!!
Clio Blair is a young lady with some very interesting capabilities, a slight temper and a love of outrageous fashion statements. She firmly believes she is capable of crime solving, certainly as well as, if not better than a man and is out to prove it once and for all in The Bewitching Miss Blair, the latest regency romp from Darcy McGuire. Viscount Beachley is dead, killed apparently by his wife, who has now fled London leaving behind a scandal and much gossip. Scotland Yard is not satisfied with what appears to be and Superintendent Lachlan McDougal wants to know what really did happen. Recruiting Clio, once again against her Aunt Rowans best wishes, she discovers she is to work with Lieutenant General Grey, Earl of Thornbrook, a man in his prime, a man who is tingling her senses in so many ways, which is not a great thing to do to a witch with an often flammable temper. Clio has skills that allow her to speak directly with the deceased, which can be very dangerous, and this does not sit well with Thomas Grey, a man who does not believe in anything etheric. He considers there is only one way to solve a crime and that is the traditional way. Sparks fly in more way than one as they steadfastly plod towards finding the killer, but they also discover there is something else involved, a feeling that neither want to accept nor define, but one that is pulling them closer together. They are not happy, not happy at all about this! Although a crime has been committed and a dastardly one at that, Darcy McGuire has once again created a heroine of outstanding ability, with a hero of very pleasing stature to while away the hours whilst trying to solve the crime committed before romance blooms.
The Bewitching Miss Blair is fun, smart and full of magic.
Clio Blair is helping her "uncle" Superintendent Lachlan MacDougal with the murder of Vicount Beachley. She is a fire witch who has a raven as a familiar named Sir Robin Goodfellow. Clio can see and talk to ghosts, so her abilities always come in handy when dealing with murders. MacDougal has also asked for the help of Lieutenant General Thomas Grey. He will help them with the high ranking rich people so that the murderer and the missing vicountess can be found. He is older, grumpy, a bit sexist and very close minded. He soon realizes that Clio wields magic and that he may be falling for her.
I am so happy to start a new book by this author. I hope it becomes a series because I need to learn more about Aunt Rowan's sisters and how they succumbed to the men that led to their demise. Their small coven is quaint and very astute, I liked the bits that I read about them. The apothecary also intrigued me, I want to learn more about it. Even though this is a murder mystery, it mostly focused on Clio and Grey and how their love for each other flourished. I also really liked Grey's sister Cynthia, she is so kind and empathetic and takes a quick liking to Clio. I loved Sir Robin the most with his random and crazy outbursts. The Duchess of Devon was a hot mess and I liked how she constantly hits on Grey and any male within her radius. Thank you Netgalley and Boldwood Books for this eARC. All opinions are entirely my own.
The writing was engaging from the beginning right through to the end. I looked forward to picking it back up at each reading session.
The chapters were fairly long and sometimes split. This meant that you were able to get immersed in the story and read a good chunk of it before moving on.
There was a good flow between the chapters and I quite happily sat and read it for long periods of time.
There was an interesting pace to the book. Whilst there was a mystery to be solved, that very quickly became sidelined with the romance starting to become the main focus and beginning to take over. This kept us in suspense as to who the murderer was. With regards to the murder, there was a nice twist which I enjoyed.
The characters were interesting. The two main characters' romance was the main focus, and we got to learn quite a lot about each of them as the story went on. I liked seeing all the different sides to the characters.
I loved reading about how strong the main female character was in a time when females were overlooked and forced to play a background part.
Lastly the settings. Whilst it was a character focused story, there were enough details to ground the story well and to ensure that we were fully immersed in the tale.
Overall an interesting read with a wonderful mix of genres.
I adored The Bewitching Miss Blair by Darcy McGuire. This book sucked me in and didn't let go, and I can't wait for the next books in this series. Clio Blair is a fire witch—gifted, defiant, and hiding more than just her magic. She has the power to speak to the dead and glimpse their final memories, which is exactly why her ‘Uncle Lachlanan’ at Scotland Yard calls her in to help solve the murder of Viscount Beachley. His ghost lingers, his wife is missing, and the trail leads straight into the glittering world of the ton where Clio has no place. She walks with ravens and burns like fire beneath her skin, and I loved her immensely. Enter Lieutenant General Thomas Grey: brooding, scandal-shadowed, and bound by honor to assist the investigation. He never expects to be paired with a sharp-tongued woman who challenges him at every turn. As they're forced into close quarters and dangerous secrets begin to surface, so does a desire neither of them can resist. I loved Thomas Grey. He's protective, loyal, and wounded in ways that made my empath heart ache. He swore never to love again, but Clio breaks through every barrier he's built. Watching him surrender to his feelings for her was beautiful. Clio knows a witch's heart is a dangerous thing to give away, especially to a man who's convinced desire alone won't protect her from the dead who would use her or the living who would destroy her. She tries to keep her secret but Grey is a dogged investigator and doesn’t miss a trick. He very quickly knows something is different about Clio and I enjoyed watching him figure her out. The magic system is captivating—McGuire built a world I want to stay in forever. I love witchy and paranormal stories as long as they are authentic and not silly, and this delivered in spades. The mystery was excellent, the twists were satisfying, and the romance had the kind of heat and heart I live for. I enjoyed Lachlan, Rowan, Ellie, and Helena as well—the secondary characters brought depth and warmth, and I'm already invested in their stories. Solving the murder may save them both, but surrendering to passion could consume them completely. McGuire wrote layered characters, a compelling mystery, and a love story that feels fated and hard-won. Excellent.
My first physical ARC and honestly… what a cute one to christen the era with.
I immediately fell in love with Sir Robin Goodfellow, a raven familiar is such a refreshing change from the classic witch’s cat and he absolutely stole every scene he was in. Witty, charming and a little chaotic in the best way.
I also really appreciated having a strong female lead in a Regency setting. Historical fantasy can sometimes lean passive with its heroines, but Miss Blair felt capable and grounded while still fitting the period.
The romance worked for me too, the way submission and trust were written felt soft and intentional rather than overdone, which made those moments stand out.
My only struggle was the pacing. The chapters are quite long and paired with the writing style, it sometimes made reading feel more like a task than I expected. It took me noticeably longer than books of a similar length, purely because the prose didn’t flow as easily for me personally.
That said, the storyline kept me engaged and the ending genuinely made me smile, always the sign of a satisfying romantic fantasy.
A charming, witty historical fantasy with a standout familiar and a soft, satisfying ending.
Intro/synopsis: “The Bewitching Miss Blair” was a new book by Darcy McGuire and the start to what will hopefully be a series. Clio is able to talk to ghosts and so she gets roped into investigating a Viscounts murder with Thomas who is able to get her connections with other peers. The chemistry between them is instant and incendiary but it manifests as dislike as they both do not want to work with each other due to trust issues. Forced proximity forces them together time and time again as they investigate until they can’t deny what they have between them, a real connection. Will their past trauma allow them to recognize what they have together despite their fears? My thoughts: I liked the plotline of this story where they combined historical fiction and fantasy. The secondary characters were fun and the development of Thomas and Clio’s relationship was fun to read. I didn’t love how Thomas would run away from Clio or refused to open up to her but his sister’s support and his acceptance of Clio from the beginning made up for this. The author hooked me into the story from start to finish and I enjoyed this book immensely. 4 ⭐️’s 3 🌶️
I thoroughly enjoyed this part-mystery, part-romance blended with the supernatural. There was intrigue, building sexual tension, witty and sardonic banter, a hilarious talking raven, vengeful ghosts, and fiery witchy powers all against the backdrop of the Victorian era. Societal expectations clash with the paranormal in the form of a highly independent and confident FMC and an emotionally scarred and taciturn FMC. The romance is a slow burn and does culminate in some medium spices scenes. They are well written and my only wish was there was more of them. The mystery unfolds in tandem with the romance and is interwoven skillfully. The side characters are all excellent and I’m hoping a few make it into subsequent books in the series which I’m assuming will follow the sister and cousin of Miss Blair. I loved this multi-genre tale and feel that it will appeal to varied audiences.
Thank you to Boldwood Books and NetGalley for this Advanced Readers Copy. My opinions are my own and are honest and heartfelt.
This is a really strong start to what I’m hoping will be a continuing series. As you know, I absolutely love a Regency romance, and this one definitely delivered.
Blending magical elements, fantasy, Regency romance, and a compelling murder mystery is no easy task, but the author pulled it off seamlessly. The mix of genres felt balanced and never confusing, which made it such an enjoyable read.
One of my favourite aspects was the development of the friendship between the two main characters. The tension and chemistry between Clio and Thomas created such a great dynamic, and I loved watching their relationship evolve.
There were a few well-placed twists, exactly what you want from a good murder mystery, which kept me fully entertained and invested throughout.
⭐ Standout character: The absolutely hilarious, foul-mouthed raven, Sir Robin 😂
If you love a Regency romance with a little spice and strong Bridgerton vibes. but with added magic and mystery, this book is definitely for you! 💕✨
I love it when you get a book that is just amazing all the way through. I was really hoping that I would love this book as much as I loved the cover art and the concept – and I did!
There is everything a fantasy / spice lover would want! We have witches, we have ghosts, we have drama, we have a grey MMC and we have spicy passion. And then throw in some Bridgerton vibes and there is a lot to love in this book.
It was a little bit predictable in places, but I loved it. It was a great comfy, spicy read. The character work was lovely and I’m really hoping that this isn’t the last instalment with Clio and Thomas as I loved how they came together, without sacrificing parts of themselves to be together.
And who can’t love a story with an animal familiar that has fantastic ‘accidental’ speaking moments too!
Please bring out the next in the series soon!! And who can’t love a story with an animal familiar that has fantastic ‘accidental’ speaking moments too!
A witchy, regency romance, whats not to enjoy! I had read a previous book by this author and really enjoyed it, so I knew that this new series would be good! I did find this a book of two halves, the first was a little slow for my tastes. Of course, being the first in the series there had to be an element of world building that contributed to this. The second half however was action packed and had me totally gripped, I had read from the start to 55% in three sittings, from 56% to the end though was read in one go! I really like the characters in this, and those we only briefly meet of Clio's family who will come to focus in their own stories as this series progresses. This tale focuses on Clio and Thomas, who immediately have a fiery chemistry, but as the story progresses and we learn more of the history of each, they are humanised and I really felt for both of them. This is the start to a really exciting series that I would definitely recommend!
The story follows a witch called Clio Blair who can speak to ghosts and uses her gift to help solve crimes. During one such case, she is put to work together with officer Thomas Grey, in pursuit of a killer. I loved loved this book! The plot was engaging and it kept me glued to the book. I really loved the characters and the way it was written. Darcy McGuire is quickly becoming one of those authors whose book I would just start reading without checking a blurb because I know it will be great anyway! Thanks to NetGalley and Boldwood books for providing me with an ARC in exchange for an honest and objective review.
The Bewitching Miss Blair by Darcy McGuire. The Society of Scandalous Witches Book 1. I really really did enjoy this book. I loved the cover and blurb of this book. This is a new author for me. I liked the writing style and the story. I did like Clio and Grey. How they were with each other. I loved Sir Robin. I read this in two sittings. I couldn't put it down. I did like the paranormal part. I do love anything with witches and ghosts. I'm looking forward to the next book. I definitely recommend this book.
I loved this book from the start to the finish Clio is a witch who can see ghosts she is asked by Superintendent Lachlan Macdougal a family friend to assist Lieutenant General Thomas Grey in finding the murderer of Viscount Beachley. This is a cozy funny novel with romance and drama throughout. I loved both of the main characters and enjoyed the twist at the end when you discover the truth and the pair commit to themselves Thanks to Netgalley and Boldwood books for my arc copy

I loved this, a mix of a paranormal mystery, historical romance, and it is a great start to a new series. The writing is sharp, the chemistry and banter between Clio and Thomas crackles, and the progression of their relationship from loathing to love was fun to read. I can’t wait for Ellie and Helena’s books, and hope we get more of Aunt Rowan’s story too.
What an engaging story! Darcy McGuire has a wonderful way of writing and this book was no exception. She brilliantly brought magic, murder and romance together in the first book of a new series. It' s a bit of a slow burn, 2nd son of an Earl and a witch. If that doesn't make you want to pick up this book to read....I can't wait for the next book!
Darcy McGuire is becoming one of my favorite authors. This book got me out of a slump of several lack luster arcs. I loved the Victorian era romance with witches. The growth and connection between Clio and Thomas drew me in and made me want more. I can’t wait for the next book to come out.
Thoroughly enjoyable read. Except for the use of "stoop" instead of step (in the UK, stoop is hunched shoulders...), and also I doubt that anyone in this time, and especially the aristocracy, would have used the truly dreadful "gotten"
Do I love it? Absolutely YES!!! leave it to Darcy Mcguire to make you swooned over an eccentric witch and hurted soldier 🌸✨🔥 she really has a way in her words that made me hooked and connected deeply with the characters she wrote ✨
Thank you NetGalley and the publisher for the ARC! This was so fun. It had mystery, ghosts, witches, magic, and romance. I really enjoyed the characters and it took a while for me to solve the mystery. The author always writes a fun and unique story!
Thank you to Boldwood Books and NetGalley for providing this ARC.
I adore Darcy’s The Queen’s Deadly Damsels series, so I was beyond excited to receive this ARC. I already love the Regency setting, but adding a bold FMC, magic, and a murder mystery makes for an absolute trifecta.
Clio Blair is a fantastic FMC, and I especially adored her family coven - it added so much charm and depth to the story. Lieutenant General Thomas is a complex and compelling character, and I loved getting to know him better as the story unfolded.
A big yes to more stories set in this world and many more murder mysteries!
