New character Hijiri comes on the scene, further making the reader wonder "what even is worldbuilding in this series?" No one's motivations make any sense. Also, does someone's appearance and voice change entirely when they transform? That's the only way I can account for Maron/Jeanne having no clue about .

Oh, and let's not even get into what happens in the latter half of this book. (CW: sexual violence) Just no, absolutely not! Pure patriarchal bullshit.

Jeanne's decision is taken out of her hands when , somewhat draining that sequence of some potential power and pathos. Along with the notion that women have no control over their feelings when it comes to love, there's an ongoing thread of Maron/Jeanne lacking the power to guide her own destiny, which puts a nasty pall over the whole thing.

Oh well, the art's still gorgeous.

2.5 stars. Despite an excellent plot twist at the end that makes narrative sense but hasn’t been telegraphed at all, so it was a legit surprise when I first read it, the storytelling in this one is an utter mess.

Clearly I'm not the target audience for this story, and I do recognize that, so I'm more accepting than I normally would be of the big moods that are teenage hormones and the emotional gravitas that they engender. Every big scene in this book swings for the fences each and every time and that's a little overwrought from my perspective but I think it's something that would work for the younger audience.

Still, the heavy sections in this book concerning Zen, a new character, go a little overboard because they're trying to make you care an incredible amount about somebody who was introduced and then written off within the span of a volume and it doesn't work. Maron's investment in him makes a certain amount of sense, but their emotional bond goes from 0 to 100 unbelievably fast. If he'd been in the series, even in the background, from the get-go it would have resonated way more.

I've also been pretty content with Tanamura's art so far, but her male characters are SO ridiculously interchangeable that the addition of two more in this volume is enough to make the reader wonder if they've developed a highly specific male-centric prosopagnosia because every guy looks like every other guy.

Speaking of, the less said about the teacher character, honestly, the better. He’s not a good foil for our heroes and his abilities are all over the map (spoiler you can figure out in five seconds: he’s evil and obviously the demon guy who’s been showing up).

He appears to have some sort of influence over Maron... for about five seconds, when that gets tossed aside and he decides that trying to force himself on her is the better plan. This feels so incredibly tacky, not even counting how it comes as Maron is reeling from a tragedy.

It’s also a serious plot hole, as this guy has had Maron unconscious for hours and despite the vague idea that she might actually willingly go along with this instead, there’s no reason for him to not accomplish his goal then (let me be clear - I’m very glad this plot hole exists because ew). He’s also been waiting around for centuries to meet up with Jeanne again - what the hell has he been doing all that time? The guy’s library card must be worn to a nub.

Then, prior to the shocking conclusion of the volume we get an extended date between Chiaki and Maron where he jerks her around for most of the day before deciding to be nice and that’s only after SHE apologizes to HIM. Sigh.

There’s also a bizarre cameo here from evil teacher where he pops in for a couple pages and then vanishes for the rest of the book and it’s so weird and without explanation that I was seriously wondering if my copy was missing pages.

Despite my grumping, I will say that the date is worth it for the scene where Miyako spots them and comes to the devastating realization that for all her bluster, Maron and Chiaki dating doesn’t bother her nearly as much as the thought of being replaced as Maron’s best friend does. It’s the most realistic and well done part of the book and the closest it comes to its previous strengths.

Yeah. So. Clearly flawed. I’m going to follow this to the end, but my honest opinion is that so far Maron is a great character who deserves a better series than she got. I went into this re-read thinking I was too harsh on the series when I first read it years ago, now I’m at the point where I feel I might have been too generous with my reviews of the initial volumes.

"I know you haven't said anything because you're worried about me but you're not being fair by keeping it all to yourself. Seeing you struggle is far more painful to me than anything else. So stop hiding things from me!!"

I read this two days ago and I STILL have been trying to process the shock of that ending because I was SO caught off guard and NEVER expected the turn of events! I mean, was ANYONE prepared for that to happen?!

Rewinding though I really enjoyed this volume overall!

The biggest reason I didn't SUPER love it?

The new character that shows up…

I cannot stand him! I knew he was shady right from the start, but I never imagined it would get worse! He is awful in every single way and I hope he will be taken down by the end of this series! Again, he was awful and will warn that he caused a very triggering moment (due to SA) and was absolutely furious!

However, the other parts of this volume were so emotional and very much cried when it came to Jeanne wanting to steal this one specific painting and the outcome. My heart felt broken and it made it much worse when you find out why a certain person interfered…

On the other hand, I feel there is such mystery around Chiaki and exactly what his angel told him (though wouldn't for the longest). Seeing his resolve to stop Jeanne at all costs was really surprising honestly because he had a different seriousness to him that's been shown thus far.

Speaking of him though, the date was SOOOOO wonderful!! I squealed...only for that cliffhanger to happen and have no idea where things are going to go from here!

I'm nervous to read the next volume, but I'll definitely be reading it!

As someone who grew up on Cardcaptor Sakura, Sailor Moon, Tokyo Mew Mew and Magic Knight Rayearth 90s magical girl series speak to me on a whole other level. I wouldn't for a second say that Phantom Thief Jeanne holds up to those bastions of maho shojo culture but it hits all the sweet spots for me as well as managing to be subversive in a few other aspects.

I do have to start off with a disclaimer however that this has some pretty heavy religious tones, absolutely not true to source and gets pretty buckwild, so I think this has the effect of probably putting off people that aren't religious and aren't interested in angels and fighting for God. But also turning away people that are as the religious themes are...pretty wild. I think that not being reglious myself did help me to enjoy it a little more to be honest.

The other disclaimer is that this is absolutely a product of its time and so has messy ideas about women and is pretty sexist in some areas. The main character is strong and tough and doesn't need anyone until she starts to struggle and then can't do anything without the male lead who is constantly rescuing her. This isn't particularly uncommon in shojo manga but the extent to which it is portrayed in this series gets pretty tiring.

That said, the art style is gorgeous. All the hallmarks of 90s shojo with adorable clothes, flowing hair and giant eyes. The idea of angels and reincarnation is an interesting slant for a magical girl series and, while as I mentioned it gets pretty wild, has its moments. This is definitely more pushed towards romance than anything else, while romance is often a big trope in magical girl series, it seems to be the predominant focus of Jeanne, even pushing aside Maron (the lead characters) job as phantom thief, I found that grating at times.

I think over all this is great for a nostalgia trip but alot of tropes are out dated, and in some places outright damaging (there's an absolutely wild idea behind using gods power and its ties to your virginity which...yeah.) but if you're able to overlook these things and suspend your disbelief for what is a pretty short series you might find enough in it to enjoy. I can absolutely see alot of people being turned off by this series though.

Still enjoying my time with this series though it seems like everything is happening quite quickly! Wish there was more time to hang out with these characters and really get to know them.

I have two problems with this series. The author keeps dumping in new characters while I'm having trouble keeping track of the ones already there. Also, I find it hard at times to follow the story; it's as if she leaves stuff out.

The rape consequences were handled so bad or.. Well they weren't handled at all and in this volume it felt like no one was taking Maron's feelings in consideration besides?? Miyako who appeared so little compared to the other volumes.
This was really the most unpleasant to go through as of now. hopefully the next one are Good

This volume contains a series high point, with the big reveal about the 'wind of God' and Zen being a fantastic mesh of so many tropes I love. But there's also, well, a scene of sexual violence that has me mixed. It's seen as evil, it's portrayed as horrible and terrifying, it doesn't try to look sexy (which is a huge gripe with me when it comes to comics and manga, that the sexual violence is used to show gratuitous nudity and framed as something 'sexual' instead of 'violent'), but it also sends a bizarre message of Marin/Jeanne and her strength.

We have a running theme in this series that our protagonist acts strong, but is inwardly weak, and it feels like this volume was building to her realizing some inner strength that isn't some fake projection but true to her personality and motivation. It looks like she is becoming strong as herself, not as a soldier of God or reincarnation of Jeanne d'Arc but as a loving and kind girl who wants to help people in need. And then we get to a point where she is robbed entirely of her own control and needs to be saved AGAIN, and she's knocked down further than she has been before.

There's some good development of the plot here, and some very nice artwork, but I'm confused as to what this series is actually doing. I'd like to see our protagonist able to stand up for herself without getting knocked down and invalidated over and over and over.

This is a cute, light series that although similar to Sailor Moon, I find easier to read because the two protagonist’s, Maron and Chiaki, are more developed. There was a fairly problematic scene which I don’t think was resolved properly, or needed to be there, hence the 3-stars. I can see how Tanemura’s work as matured between this and her new series, Idol Dreams.

I am enjoying the budding romance between Maron and Chiaki. Although Maron declares her love for him pretty early on, it continues to develop like a normal highschool romance. I like that Maron fluctuates between an immature teenager, and showing the maturity that comes with her experience of essentially raising herself, and now being Phantom Thief Jeanne.

Read wholly and properly from June 15 (the wee hours of the morning) to June 15 (the pre-dinner hours spent too much travelling). Now, typically, my hubris is great and I think to myself: "I shall bring multiple books, in case I finish one and run out of things to read." So, of course, it figures that the one (1) time I lowball my self-estimation and say to myself, "I could never finish all three library books that are overdue," I actually do finish the one I brought and run out of things to read! Man! Wasted opportunity to finish them all; I actually could have!

The story is still a classic, but I really judge the translators of this reprint for calling the Devil "the Demon Lord". Cowards!

I'm getting really annoyed with all the characters looking similar.
The only reason I'm even finishing this manga at this point is because it's only 5 volumes long.

The story is decent. The characters are decent. The art style is different, but the costumes are beautiful. The only reason I'm rating down is this concept is so entirely overdone I feel like I've read this five times already.

Silly storyline. Choppy transitions. Too many gags. Unbelievable motivations. A slight rape scene. I’m done. I stopped reading partway through. I have no interest in finishing the series. I usually love Tanemura’s work, but this one was simply too cluttered and clunky to get through. Pretty art, though.

Chiaki's romantic attempts towards Maron sometimes border on sexual harassment and objectification, I do not like it. Also, Maron's powers disappear if she has sex? Wtf is this shit. There's still some mild redeeming qualities but it's losing me.

Also what is with all the weirdly absent parents in this series who think never contacting their children for years is somehow good?

Very nice continuation of the series.

It did have some more mature themes, like non-consensual touching and death of a character.

The manga ended on a cliffhanger which makes me more eager for the next book.

Lots of twists in this volume! I’m still so unsure about this series but I don’t think this story is bad. The pacing is just too quick. If there were more time between events and more time for characters to bond, the story would flow better.

Rape scene was the biggest unexpected turn off. The inevitable betrayal?

~4/5

[Read more at my blog, Geeky Reading!]

Now this series is getting really exciting. I love it.

We meet a new character in this volume, Hijiri, and that leads to the Jeanne plotline getting serious. Maron being a reincarnation of Jeanne d’Arc hasn’t really been important till now, but now it really is. I won’t spoil why, though. I will say I’m not a huge fan of Hijiri, though, particularly when he tries to force himself on Maron.

Then there’s a few chapters where Maron meets an ill boy being possessed by a demon, and has to deal with the decision to exorcize the demon or not. I remember the boy from my previous read, and was not quite as emotional this time, but it’s still sad, and I still really like him. His parents kind of upset me, though, because I don’t agree with their decision.

This leads to a confrontation with Chiaki, and the revelation of something that has been hidden from Maron from the start. And it’s kind of horrible. It’s a huge betrayal, and the cliffhanger is really horrible. I can’t wait for the next volume, so I can read where the story goes next.

I’m loving getting to read this series again. And now that the story is getting serious, and into the more exciting plotline development, I’m really excited about it. It’s getting to the really good stuff now.

Well, I started warming up a bit more to this series with this volume, despite the Sailor Moon rip off. I'm trying to put it behind me and just take it as it is.

I really do enjoy the characters of this series. They're all super fun. I do enjoy the humor in the drawings. I am enjoying it. I really enjoyed the storyline with Zen. It was very touching.

And it needs to be said... Miyako and Chiaki's dad are the greatest!
