The Balance Keepers #1

The Fires of Calderon

Rate this book
The first book in an epic middle grade fantasy adventure series that takes place in an underground society at the center of the earth. Packed with action, humor, magic, and mystery.

After following a mysterious map into the woods and then under the woods, eleven-year-old Albert Flynn learns he’s a Balance Keeper—someone with special magical skills for fixing problems in three underground Realms at the Core of the earth. His new job is important; if the realms fall out of balance, the world above could be in great danger.

Albert and his Balance Keeper teammates Birdie and Leroy arrive in the Core not a moment too soon. There’s an Imbalance in the Calderon Realm and it’s threatening to bury Albert’s hometown of New York City in a mountain of ash.

The three must train hard completing mental and physical challenges, but above all, they must harness the power of their Tiles—unique superpowers given to each Balance Keeper. So far, Albert’s mastered the art of not mastering his Tile....

With the situation in Calderon growing worse every day, can Albert, Leroy, and Birdie restore balance before New York is destroyed forever? Will Albert master his Tile before it’s too late?

Perfect for fans of Percy Jackson, The Unwanteds, and the classic Journey to the Center of the Earth.

Yay, I've officially read all of the Lindsay Cummings's books! Haha. :)

This probably won't be a super long review, but I guess I'll just say why I decided on a 4 star rating instead of a 5. I feel like if I had read this when I was 10-13 years old I would have LOVED it! It's a really amazing adventure book about friendship and magic. I just found it hard to connect with the characters, as the three main characters were all 11 years old. I hate to say that, but it's the truth. That being said, I still *adored* the three main characters! I found them all to be super funny, unique, and brave!

Even though there were a lot of similarities to Harry Potter and Percy Jackson, I feel like the story still managed to be unique. I loved the tiles! I thought that aspect of the novel was super cool, and now I want to know what my tile would be. :P

One thing I didn't love about this book was the 3rd person POV. I'm more of a 1st person kind of girl! I feel like if I had been inside of Albert's head, I would have felt a stronger connection to him (e.g. Percy Jackson).

But overall, I really enjoyed this book! On those hard days it was nice to remember that I had the magical world of Balance Keepers, strange creatures, and powerful tiles to pick me back up again and let me escape reality for a while!
I'm definitely going to be recommending this book to my younger siblings (ages 9,11, & 13) and I'm excited to hear their thoughts on it!

Really excited for book 2!! :)

I was lucky enough to get my hands on an ARC of Balance Keepers. Cummings sculpts a madly creative world with impressive ease. The imaginative settings are stellar and by far my favorite part. I also enjoyed the clever way the characters acquire their powers. Balance Keepers is reminiscent of some of my favorite series, particularly Harry Potter and even Ender’s Game- without giving too much away, “the Pit” in the story reminded me of the battle room in Ender’s Game (one of my favorite books of all time.)
Exciting and entertaining. I couldn't turn the pages fast enough. The kids will devour this one.

So I loved this book! Don't usually read too much in middle grade, but I liked this one. The characters were well-rounded and didn't feel super-cliche. The idea of the Balance Keepers was interesting and I can't wait to see what the other realms look like. I like that just because certain characters are teamed up with the most unlikeable ones, doesn't always mean that they're all just as mean and spiteful (a.k.a. NONE of Slytherin staying to fight). Even the "bad guys" can surprise you from time to time, and especially at this age - just because someone is a bully in middle school doesn't mean that's who they'll be for the rest of their life.
Also, I can't decide which I want more: a dog with flashlight eyes like Farnsworth or a Guildacker. Tough call.....

After following Lindsay Cummings online for a few years now, I finally picked up one of her books after finding The Fires of Calderon at a library book sale. This is a middle grade fantasy novel, and the first the Balance Keepers trilogy. Readers follow a boy named Albert who is visiting his father for the summer. Albert plans to work in the Dead Letter Office at the local post office, but his summer changes when a dog named Farnsworth brings him a letter that needs to be delivered. This letter grants Albert entry into the hidden world of the Core at the center of the Earth. It turns out Albert is a Balance Keeper, and that he has magical abilities that help control the Earth he's always known aboveground.

I absolutely adored The Fires of Calderon! It has a Harry Potter and Percy Jackson vibe, but is its own unique story. My favorite part of the book is the magic system. Upon arriving to the Core, new Balance Keepers must dive underwater to find a tile with a symbol on it. Whatever symbol you retrieve is the magic power you possess. There are water tiles, strength tiles, quickness tiles, and more! I think this magic system is quite unique, and I really enjoyed how the characters really had to work as a team to solve problems because each only has one power.

Speaking of the characters, I really loved them! Albert has two teammates named Leroy and Birdie, and they are all extremely likable. Each character has something relatable about him or her, such as coming from a blended family or being a tomboy, that will help younger readers connect to the story. Of course, there are the bully characters as well, and I think Cummings handled the mean Hoyt and his pals quite well. One of my favorite characters, though, is Albert's grandpa, Pap. While he doesn't play a big role in the novel, Pap is so heartwarming, and his scenes are some of the most enjoyable, I think, for older readers.

Another thing I loved about The Fires of Calderon is the inclusion of magical creatures! The Core is abundant with fascinating and new animals, such as the sea turtles who help escort the Balance Keepers to dinner. My favorite of the bunch is Albert's companion animal, Farnsworth. I just love that Albert has a dog with special powers – his eyes light up like a flashlight! The inclusion of Farnsworth makes the book that much cozier for me.

As for my critiques of the novel, I did find that the world-building needed a bit of strengthening. For example, Balance Keepers who leave the Core lose their memories of this underground society. However, it was unclear what the rules regarding this memory loss are. I know that when Albert and his team come back in the next book they will remember the Core, so I'm hoping we get more information about this in the future. I also spotted a handful of editing mistakes in the novel.

Otherwise, I absolutely adored The Fires of Calderon. Cummings has a great writing style that, while geared towards a middle school audience, is still enjoyable to me as an adult. She does an excellent job at concluding the storyline in this first book while also setting up the plot for the next one in the series. I immediately ordered the second book so I could read on in the Balance Keepers trilogy! If you enjoy middle grade fantasy novels, I highly recommend giving this one a try.

I got this book based on the rave reviews and ignored the negative ones. After struggling to finish the book, I see the issues others were talking about. The story itself is fine and I'm sure young kids will find it appealing who don't know or remember much about Harry Potter. With that in mind, that was my problem with this book. I lost count as I finished the novel of how many ideas in this story are reused ideas from Harry potter. They are outright glaring and anyone who has read HP knows what I am talking about. I feel bad the author had to create a story using so many elements from that series.

What really bothers me is all of the high quality self published books for sale that are denied by agents/publishers because they are different and unique. I guess the only great idea is one already used to make money with in the publishing world. I have yet to read Lindsay's YA book, if I do I hope it is not more of the same. I will most likely not be reading the rest of the Balance Keeper series, unfortunately.

Ok, this book may be geared towards the younger readers but I am still a kid at heart (So that counts right). I loved this book. The magical world that the author built was great. Instantly I like Albert did not want to leave. I was a little sad when the book was over. Which it seemed like I had barely just opened the book before the story ended. It was a very fast read. As I was reading this book I could not help but picture Harry Potter. While Albert is not a wizard, he is a great Balance Keeper. He and his two friends, Leroy and Birdie make a excellent team. Each one brings something different to the group. They are like Harry and his friends. I am excited to read the next book and see what additional powers that Albert possesses and if he and his friends can help protect Earth.

First of all, I want to say that this review is entirely unfair for me to write. I usually don't exactly like MG books because obviously I've grown out of them and have no idea what it's like to love a book so... childish anymore. But I'll try my hardest to act as though I was a 10 year-old reviewing this.

When I first heard what this book was about, I was all like "YEA! I LOVE HARRY POTTER!" But I also heard it was a crossover of Percy Jackson too and I'm like "UGH I don't like Percy Jackson!" So I had mixed emotions towards this book.

This was such a fun read, full of creativity and adventure, and featuring a great humorous voice. I could definitely see middle-grade readers who loved series like Harry Potter and Keeper of the Lost Cities eating it right up. And Farnsworth deserves a special mention as both best pet and best-named pet in recent memory. :) Kudos to Ms. Cummings on a terrific MG debut!

When Albert is given a letter to give to someone in the woods little does he know that its the start of a magical journey to save the world. He is told that he is a Balance Keeper and will spend the summer in the Core training to keep the balance between the realms. Along with his teammates Birdie and Leroy, Albert must train as fast and hard as he can because there is a devastating imbalance in the Calderon Realm and the world above is suffering. Albert also needs to figure out his magical powers before its too late. Will the trio figure out the Means to save Calderon and will Albert figure out his abilities before New York gets buried under Ash?

Every so often you read a book that you know from the get go that its one in a million. Well this is that one. Without a doubt, the best Middle Grade book I've read since The Harry Potter and Percy Jackson series. I didn't just read it, I devoured it!

I loved Albert. He is spending the summer with his dad and grandfather and is bored. He is supposed to be helping his dad in the post office, sorting the dead letters. Next thing he knows, a dog arrives with a letter in his mouth. The letter is from his dad and tells him that he needs to deliver the letter to someone in the forest and that the dog knows the way. He is at the age where all he wants is adventure and he dives into every thing that's thrown at him with gusto!!

Birdie and Leroy were awesome as well. Birdie is the dare devil of the group, while Leroy is more cautious. When they first arrive at the Core, new recruits are told to dive into the fountain and retrieve the Tile that calls to them. Birdie goes first and gets her Tile in no time. Hers gives her the ability to breathe underwater and she has an affinity with water. Leroy goes next and comes up with his Tile. His one gives him photographic memory and Knowledge. Albert is last and it seems to take him a long time to find his Tile. When he eventually comes up his Tile is different to everyone elses. While theirs are White with a black ruin, his is black with a white ruin. Why is his different and what does it mean? I loved the Tiles. They were a unique way of giving the kids powers. It makes a nice change from where they suddenly wake up with powers!!

I dont want to say much more because I dont want to give any spoilers! All I can say is that this is a must read!!! Filled with action, adventure, battles, fantastical creature of all sizes, Balance Keepers is one of those books where once you finish, you wish you could reread it for the first time again. From its fantastic characters to its magical realms, Balance Keepers is amazing. Action packed, thrilling and gripping, I loved it and can not wait for more!!!!

The Fires of Calderon is the first book in Lindsay Cummings trilogy, the Balance Keepers. In the book it follows a boy, Albert, who is from Herman and all he wants to do it have a great adventure and make some friends on the way. His wish is granted. At eleven years old he is called to the center of the Earth to become a Balance Keeper. A Balance Keeper is someone with powers, based on the tile they pick when they first enter the Core.

There is a great imbalance in the Calderon realm and Albert, and his two new friends, Leroy and Birdie, have to train to use there new power and compete against other teams to see who is the strongest team in case an emergency calls and they are needed in the Calderon realm instead of just a practice run.

Can the Balance Keepers save New York before calling on a new team? Can the Balance Keepers save New York before it is covered in ashes? Can the save it before it causes a world wide problem?

This book is so good.

I have only read one other tween book, The Iron Trial, and I didn't enjoy it a whole ton so I put off reading tween books for a while till I bought Lindsay Cummings tween book then I had to read it right away. Lindsay Cummings is an amazing author and beautiful writer. If you haven't read a book by her go pick up The Murder Complex or this book right now. You will fall in love.. Also Lindsay Cummings is such an amazing person.. Her snapchat stories are hilarious and she is so active to her followers on instagram! She has commented on three of my photos, and liked a ton more. One time she said I looked a little like Meadow-ish from the Murder Complex and I had a freak out... I still am freaking out.

Anyways, I will stop talking about Lindsay Cummings and get on with this book. The plot was really good. It was a little cheesy but I can understand it is a kids book, and the plot was at times predictable but again it is a kids book.

I really liked Leroy. He was the nerdy kid that is super awkward and it super careful but throughout this book he breaks out of his shell and I was so happy for him. By far he is my favourite character.

It is a very easy read, and it didn't really make me have to stop doing homework to read it. It was really fun and easy to read it around school work.. If that makes sense? Not dead set on dropping everything to read the book but an amazing book and you need to know what happens. You need to know if Albert beats Hoyt at all, or if they ever get called to the Calderon realm.

A very good kids book that always keeps you on your toes asking for more. I am for sure going to buy books two and three!

Can I tell you I really loved this book? I am quite fond of Middle Grade reads because they are so fun and have such strong stories full of imagination and make believe. I read Lindsay Cummings YA book and loved it so this book was a must for me to read and she did not disappoint. She created a world underground and 3 lovable characters that reminded me a little of the friendship in Harry Potter. I adore Albert, Leroy and Birdie and I loved the friendship they had, three quiet kids that connect with each other and work as an amazing team.

The story starts with Albert, it's in his POV, he is chosen to be a keeper in a world that is located underground. With a Harry Potter feel and a journey to the center of the earth layout, this was so much fun to read. I really enjoyed it and I look forward to having both my kids enjoy this book when they are ready for a fun adventure in a world unlike any I have every read. The world build was great and I loved all the characters in the book. The only problem I had with this book was the end was a bit rushed. It was so exciting I kind of wanted more of that and less of them training, I also wanted a little more back story of the characters however not knowing didn't take anything away from them but I wished I had a little more detail. The kids each had to find tiles and really enjoyed how each one gave the person who wore it a different ability, very interesting and unique idea. I wonder what I would have gotten; I hope the one that Albert received because that one seems really cool. I think a lot can come from this story I look forward to finding out more about the characters, world and tiles in the next book. I am 100% for sure reading the next one I can't wait.

I honestly want to rant and rave about this book but I don't want to give anything away. I love Lindsay's imagination and her writing style is wonderful. She can tell an incredible story. I am happy to add her as one of my favorites and pretty much am looking forward to anything she writes.

I gave The Fires of Calderon 4.5/5 stars. Action, Adventure, Friendship and a whole new world to explore, this is a fantastic book for middle grade and adults. I would 100% recommend this book, Lindsay did a fantastic job and I really can't wait to read were she takes Albert, Leroy and Birdie next.

*NOTE: This is a review of the entire trilogy.*

I'd heard great things about Lindsay Cumming's The Murder Complex duology. I hadn't heard many things about her Balance Keepers trilogy, but I had been wanting to read a lot of middle grade fantasy books lately, so I figured I'd try it before The Murder Complex. I ended up loving it. In fact, I loved it so much that I read the entire trilogy in two days, which is no easy feat considering the size of the books.

I loved everything about The Balance Keepers trilogy. I can't think of one thing I disliked about it. It reminded me of Harry Potter, combined with parts of Ender's Game, and brought back a lot of nostalgic feelings for both series. I loved how fast paced the series was. There was never a single moment where I was bored, or wanted to put the book down. It was interesting to see how the main characters used their resources to solve the problems in the realms. There were some that I didn't think they were going to be able to solve, but they did in surprising, and shocking ways.

I loved each and every one of the characters. I don't think i could pick a favorite if I tried. Each one of them had something unique to bring into the trilogy. The three main characters reminded me a bit of Harry, Ron, and Hermione from the Harry Potter series. Even though I didn't like him at first, I even ended up liking Hoyt. He might be a jerk at first, but in the end, he redeemed himself, and became one of my favorite characters.

I was not prepared for this trilogy to end. As I turned the last few pages of The Traitor of Belltroll, it felt like I was losing a home, and a friend. I really hope that Lindsay Cummings writes a spin off series. Maybe she could write one where the main characters are older, and making their decision about whether to live there all the time. However, I'd be happy with any sort of spin off series in this world. I'm not above begging, pleading, and groveling to make this happen. This will definitely be a series I buy physical copies of, read multiple times, and probably read to the children in my life. I'm more than slightly addicted to this trilogy. I really do wish more people would read it.

I picked up this book because I was a massive fan of Lindsay Cummings’ previous novel THE MURDER COMPLEX, yet it sat on my shelf for months before I finally found time to sit down and read it. And I’m so glad that I did. I don’t read a lot of Middle Grade, but books like this remind me of why I should. I’ve heard BALANCE KEEPERS be described as ‘Harry Potter meets Percy Jackson’, and while I don’t normally take reviews like that to heart, I have to say that if you love either of these series’ (or both!) as much as I do, then you really should pick up this book and give it a read. A final quick thought that I have on this book is that it is, in my view, incredibly visual. As I read, the descriptions provided are so vivid that everything seemed fully formed and fully defined in my mind, something that I’ve seen many writers try to do but often lack in. The Fires of Calderon is the first in the series, and is an absolutely fantastic opening to what I’m sure will be an incredible series.
I absolutely adored the three main characters; Albert is an excitable kid who thrives on the adventure aspect of his new life, while at the same time understanding the danger of it. He does everything he can to help his friends. Leroy, on the other hand, loves the theoretical side of his new life and could probably do without the danger. (My favourite line in the novel was when he says “Talk about spooky […] why couldn’t it be called the Forest of Fluffy Bunnies or something?” (p.274). And Birdie. What can I say about Birdie? She’s the most awesome eleven year old kid since Annabeth Chase. And that’s saying something.

This book has all the elements that will draw young readers in and keep them turning pages: a likable, adventuresome main character in Albert, well-drawn sidekicks in Birdie (she's full of feist), and Leroy who is not so adventuresome, but totally endearing and a jolly, mysterious mutt. The world building is wonderful and the writing is both clever and beautifully descriptive. Kids will love the fantastical Core creatures, and root for Albert and his friends when they come up against challenges that are both life-threatening and as ordinary as boasting bullies. I thoroughly enjoyed it! In a word: COOL!

Albert is in the dead letter office of the post office in Herman, Wyoming for the summer. His dad is the postman. Albert is asked to deliver a letter and finds his way to a whole new world. He becomes part of a team with Birdie and Leroy.
The story is well written and imaginative. It is the beginning of a series. I really like it because the kids just keep working at getting better at their new job of Balance Keepers in spite of bullies and challenges. Like most children's books they end up the heroes, but they worked hard to get there. They were kind to others along the way. They stood up to the bullies.
I think the author did a good job of world building.

Predictable. Nothing new or fresh about the idea. I was looking forward to this a lot. It felt like the author was forcing the story and characters on me, to make me like it all. It was hard to get into also, not sure what all the high reviews are so far except probably friends and family and over excited fans. Will be interesting to see over time how the general fans respond to the book. The story also, to me, was hard to tell if it was MG or YA, since the author already as a YA book out and a second on the way.

Read this to my son who's 8 and he had this to say;

"I loved the book very much. I liked the adventures they all had together. I loved how you made Alberts tile unknown. I want the next book to come out VERY soon!!!! I love your book so much Lindsay."

I enjoyed reading this to my son. Very similar to Harry Potter series, perhaps too similar for my liking, but without the darker edge to it. A good clean fun read and not too scary for the sensitive hearts.

Lindsay Cummings is such a masterful writer. I was just amazed by the writing style and how she pieced together such a great fantasy world. The world of the Balance Keepers is a really interesting place. The overall plot was very much Harry Potter meets Percy Jackson but there was a lot of original and creative ideas.
This is one of the best middle grade books I've read.

This was fine-ish, and I think kids will really like it. Maybe. Kids are weird. I mean, I work with them every day and I still don't get what drives kid trends.

Anyway, I got about halfway through and it felt like a slog. I could pretty much guess where everything was going.

A thought: why can't the Chosen One have two girl friends? Or BE a girl? Perish the thought.

DNF at 37% - I love these types of stories, but this one isn't working for me. Cummings paints a strange world, but not one I find exciting and I don't feel any sort of connection to the characters. I guess there are only a certain amount of times I can handle the 'chosen one' plotline.

this was just what I needed! I felt a slump coming on and this definitely cured it.

+I was a bit hesitant to Lindsay Cummings writing I've been watching a lot of her writing videos on her YouTube channel since I'm in desperate need of advice and motivation. I've gotten to know her writing process pretty well so...why was I nervous? One word: ZENITH. I've been reading a lot of Zenith reviews lately since it is one of the first ever booktube books (following Cloaked in Shadow and BYLTHM) and the reviews have been very mixed leaning more towards the negative side. Some of the writing qualities in Zenith found were definitely in The Fires of Calderon. The overuse of italics was common in this book, but it didn't bother me as much as it did other people. Otherwise, I couldn't find many flaws in this book, I wasn't even reading that critically it's just the Zenith buzz made me question some things.

+This book was some sort of Harry Potter, Percy Jackson, City of Ember hybrid that worked? Other fans of those three series would probably call this book out for its similarities but when I was reading I felt very "at home." The characters were well developed even if they were very similar to the Golden Trio and Percy, Annabeth and Grover. The magic system, as well as the world, was so neat !! I went into this book thinking that it was probably going to be a trip back to 8th Grade Earth Science but it wasn't ! I really REALLY want to read the next book but my library doesn't have it and I don't really want to buy it either? I don't know...I JUST NEED MORE.

Recommended to those who want to reread HP but can't find the time to do so.
