Rate this book
Located on the outskirts of Nullsville and run by the insidious Engineers, Miss Weaver's Academy for the Scientifically Gifted and Ethically Unfettered ― also known as Hollow Fields ― dedicates itself to raising the next generation of mad scientists and evil geniuses! Classes include Live Taxidermy, Cross-Species Body Part Trans-plantation, and Killer Robot Construction. For their own survival, students must master their lessons quickly...the student with the lowest grades at the end of each week is sent to the old windmill for detention―and so far, no child has ever returned. Once thought to be a shoo-in for detention, recent transfer student Lucy Snow has come into her own at Hollow Fields thanks to Doctor Bleak―a mysterious box-like artifact that Lucy found in the library. Now with Doctor Bleak on her side, can the duo uncover the mysteries of the windmill and reveal the scope of Miss Weaver's evil plans before its too late?

I give this volume 3.5/5 stars, but I'll go ahead and give it a full 4/5, since I'm sure I'd enjoy reading it time and again if I space the times out far enough. I enjoyed seeing the Engineers before they completely changed themselves. They were all pretty, especially Miss Rickets, and I'm surprised how pretty Miss Weaver was. I supposed that all (or almost all) of the Engineers were, at one time, just as human as anyone else. They merely figured something out that nobody else had, some inhumane way to preserve their bodies and minds. But I bet they all smell like rotting flesh. The sour but sweet smell of slowly rotting flesh which is still mildly preserved. Although, they likely also smell of preservatives and other sorts of chemicals they likely use to sustain their cells. And poor Doctor Bleak, he's been captured. I kept thinking Weaver would crush him, but she hasn't yet. And... Ms. Notch AKA Emily Notch, did she actually want to become what she is now? She seems happy, but... In the flashback, when Rickets and Weaver spoke of turning her into a machine, she seemed unhappy with the talk. Of course, who wouldn't be? But, the question is, was she a wiling subject? Or did she only become accustomed to her new body after she was forced into it? Or maybe her mind was even programmed to feel and think a bit differently... Who can say? But this volume gave some very interesting insights, and it developed the story at a steady pace. It was a bit exciting too, but only enough to keep you reading for more, not excitedly, but still like "I am genuinely interested in seeing what is to become of this." I thoroughly enjoyed it, and I anticipate reading the conclusion to this mildly innocent trilogy. My favorite part of this volume was being able to Simon again, technically. At least he's alive? He doesn't seem to be tortured by the results of the experiments done on him at the windmill. He really did care for Lucy... To escape just to warn her, and attempt to ease her, then to be caught and locked away.

Fun and Original!

A Fun, dark, sinister, and deeply outrageous story line with beautiful color illustrations! Lucy Snow continues on with her “unusual” studies at the foreboding Hollow Fields academy where nobody likes anybody, the decrepit teachers are terrifying, and everyone seems to be bent on annihilating her. Watch out Lucy!!! Somehow, however, through it all, Lucy manages to keep up her sweet disposition and positive outlook. She really is quite darling….😘

Not only is it as good as the first one, it adds even more depth to the story through explaining the history of Hollow Fields and the villains who run it. It's surprising how you care for even minor characters, like Carmen for example. In any other series she'd be a faceless minion to the queen bee Summer, but she feels as alive as any of the other characters in the book, and you kind of root for her to get out from under Summer's thumb.

I'm really enjoying this series, and I think I'm hooked.

I have so many questions! What is Miss Weaver's personal experiment? Is it to somehow transfer their consciousness into the bodies of Hollow Fields' students and ensure their immortality? Who is Doctor Bleak and why is he in the form of a mechanical cube? Why is it always raining around Hollow Fields and does it have anything to do with Miss Weaver's experiment? How are the engineers still alive using clockwork mechanics after all this time? Here's to hoping that the third and final volume of Hollow Fields will answer all these questions!

I liked this one as much as the first. But, just like the first one, there is a huge cliff-hanger at the end of the book. I really liked the characters that were kinda forgotten in the first book, so it's very creative and cool at the same time!

I'm liking this series more and more. The story is broadening and the will to survive has become more intense. A flashback was introduced, so the characters have become much more understandable, if not more menacing.
It was a lot of fun, and I can't wait for the third and final instalment!

*3 or more is good for comics, manga or graphic novels. I never really know how to rate some of these. There are some where I'm totally in love, know automatically it is a 5 star, but then some I am just not sure about in the first couple volumes.*

I think anyone with a brain could have seen Summer was up to no good. It's going to get interesting with both Lucy and her classmate going to the windmill next. I probably would have eaten this story up when I was much, much younger.

I really enjoyed the second volume, it was just as fun and cute as the first. In this volume things do begin to get more serious and we get to meet some new and fascinating characters.
