Undertow #2

Raging Sea

Rate this book
In the first book of Michael Buckley’s Undertow trilogy, the Alpha arrived and the world was never the same. At the start of the second book, most of south Brooklyn is in ruins and the nation is terrified. Nearly everyone that Lyric Walker loves is either missing or presumed dead, including the mesmerizing prince Fathom. It’s up to Lyric to unite the Alpha before the second wave of a cataclysmic invasion wipes out mankind for good. The Undertow trilogy is an unforgettable reading experience that author E. Lockhart calls, "Allegorical and romantic, the book nevertheless reads like an action movie with especially awesome CGI."

I don't like giving books less than 3 stars, but that just seems like too much in this case. I didn't hate it, but I didn't like it either.

The ending did make me like the book a bit more, but I felt cheated and there was some stuff that happened that just made me absolutely despise this book for so many reasons.

Lyric has got to be one of the most annoying main characters of all time and I don't remember thinking that in the first book.

I wish that I liked this one more than I did. I still kinda want to read the last one to see how it all plays out, but I'm not sure when that'll be.

It was completely underwhelming.

I received a copy of Raging Sea from a Goodreads giveaway for a true and honest review. I was not paid for this.

I really wanted to like this book. The first one I liked well enough, which made me want to like this one even more. Unfortunately, I did not. There were a couple of things that bothered me consistently throughout the book.

1. The author says some kind of racist shit. Like, I think he's trying to be inclusive, but not even the editor picked up on the fact that this stuff was coming across kind of racist!?

2. It's not cute when the characters keep saying things like "This isn't a movie"/"This isn't a YA novel". Also the hating on love triangles when there is a friggen love triangle in the book is just so dumb. This has also been done in books before, and it's just not working. (You can argue all you want that there's no love triangle but there definitely is even if the parties are unwilling it's still a triangle).

3. Speaking of that love triangle... Has any boy ever come into Lyric's life that didn't have a crush on her? I could make a list of all of them but the review only allows me to write 20 thousand character reviews so...

4. The "big twist" was super obvious to me. I knew who the client was almost immediately. I also guessed a couple of the other "twists". The only one I didn't see coming was the one at the very end, and to be honest it fell short for me.

5. Lyric kind of becomes this whiney/moody girl she wasn't in the first book. You could argue that this is because she's been through stuff since the first book. But literally saying to a boy (one that had a crush on her - SHOCKING - actually now that I think of that, that boy literally disappears and never comes back into the book, wtf?) "You're cute... enough." Like whoa okay. Also why don't you stop raging about how much you hate Fathom now and let him talk. You can't literally yell at someone to explain themselves to you but then say you don't want to talk THEN GET MAD THEY DIDN'T EXPLAIN THEMSELVES TO YOU.

6. Yelling. Everyone yells everything in this novel.

7. The training for the battle takes forever and is just not interesting to be honest. I can't even say much more. It wasn't interesting.

8. Lyric points out many times that she's ugly and gross and blah blah blah yet EVERY BOY SHE COMES INTO CONTACT WITH LOVES HER.

While writing this review, I really wanted to drop my rating from a two to a one star. I'm leaving it at two just because there were certain parts of it I did enjoy (though brief), and I have definitely read worse books that I would not equate this with. Another review left for this book said it made them want to read the last one because they were invested and wanted to know what happened, but I disagree. This book completely distanced almost every character for me. I frankly don't even really care what happens after this one. Will I read the next (and hopefully last) book in the Undertow (hopefully trilogy) series? If I get it for free. But I don't think I'll ever spend money on it.

My favorite part of this book was the end. Because then I didn't have to keep reading it.

Well damn this book was awesome and thrilling. War has come now that the Rosulka have arrived on the shores. Having ravaged through their once captive leaders, both species are dwindling and the biggest threat as always is the humans. Something has to mend this rift between them, it’s a genocide that need not continue. I imagine it won’t be easy getting Fathom and his people to apologize especially after losing millions. But damnit compromise always has to be possible. Otherwise it’s just a never ending war no one will win as everyone will be dead 😳
While on her way to save her parents Lyric becomes a prisoner and a pawn. I always get so frustrated in these situations as they’re too believable and frustrating to watch kids be hurt and family members be killed all at the whim of a madman or in this case a corporation funded by crazies. Ironic there’s always a psychotic, deranged and rich politician behind endeavors like this. Why must everything be met with hostility? Smh. While Lyric may find a way to see her family again, being a prisoner is not easy. She has powers and there are those who will manipulate her in any way they see fit to get their way. The book also ends with a pretty decent cliffy that makes reading the next book an emergency. I really hope there’s some way to form some type of peace between all in the ocean and on land. I just worry what more catastrophes will occur before the adults can stop the death. I mean it’s a huge ocean, a huge world, why can we not get along?!? (Any name accidents are due to me reading via the audio lol)

Wow. I don't know what it is about this author's writing that draws me in and locks me in a web I can't escape, but I was hooked. The story continues a little bit after the last one left off, but it quickly picks up speed.

In the last book, I was attracted to the interactions between Fathom and Lyric, as their conversations alone were enough reason to read the book. Fathom is just not the type of character you usually see in YA, and honestly it is so refreshing. But beyond that, you have the most freaking kick butt mermaids alpha that you ever did see. The whole book just really plays off that apocalyptic feeling really really well.

The whole time I felt like I was walking into certain doom.

It was one gripping ride, even though I didn't get to see Fathom nearly as much as I'd like. (He was missing for the first bit of the book) however, seeing as he isn't the only good part about this novel, I couldn't really complain.

I can relate to our main character, and so that definitely made me like her more, and wonders upon wonders, there was some lovely character development in this novel. Go Lyric! (ps, does anyone else think her name is a bit of a dead giveaway for what she is? I mean if I had that kind of name I would have been asking some questions here... *scratches head*)

Anyways. The writing really did it for me. Even if the plot had been trash, and there had been cheesy romance, and the characters were flat and shallow, the writing would have been enough to make this a fairly enjoyable novel regardless. Awesome descriptions, awesome world building.

But the characters were good, the plot was good beyond being slow to start, and the romance was most definitely not cheesy. There was lots of tension in this book (and I'm not talking sexual tension, I'm talking 'I think my boyfriend is dead and I'm grieving him' tension and 'I think everyone has betrayed me and now I hate them' kind of tension) basically... lots of emotions.
And the bad guy was actually terrifying. We weren't really facing just one man/woman and their crazed ambitions. We had a whole society, an organization that did terrifying things to our characters.

And it all builds up to the lovely cliffhanger at the end. *laughs maniacally*

Where's the next book?

I had such high hopes for this one... So disappointing. I guess the author was hoping no one was familiar with TX or a trek across it. He made it sound like the entire state was desert. The book starts in a desert and then it turns out they have to go across the state to get to the Tempest compound. So if you're coming from the east coast and have to travel across TX you don't start out in the dessert! So that was a bad start. And then the San Saba part. I guess the author was hoping no one was familiar with the small town. It sounds like all he did was google some stuff and make up the rest. If someone gets separated from their family at the TX border, why would they choose San Saba for their meet up spot? I guess they were trying to lay low. The rest was boring and I found Lyric's unwillingness to listen to Fathom pathetic. And how he doesn't even bother to make her listen. He's suppose to be some sort of warrior not a sad kicked puppy. And the ending was quick and disappointing. Because I enjoyed the first book so much I'll read the next one but I hope it's not as painful to read.

*My Thoughts*

Raging Sea is the second installment in Michael Buckley's Undertow series. In the weeks following the end of Undertow, 17-year old Lyric Walker, her best friend Rebecca "Bex" Conrad, and Titan clan member Arcade, went on the run. Lyric is on the FBI's most wanted list, and is being labeled as the Coney Island Terrorist. Funny since she and others actually tried to save her home of Coney Island from an invading force! Now, with family and friends missing, or captured by a group called Tempest, Lyric and friends will travel from Coney Island to Texas in an attempt to break them loose.

Synopsis: In the first book of Michael Buckley’s Undertow trilogy, the Alpha arrived and the world was never the same.

Review: I thought this was a pretty good sequel! It kept me on my toes and it kept up the terror from the end of the first book. The introduction of the previous characters were well done and it was well summed up and helped me remember what the first book was about. The writing was also well done and the world building was amazing as well.

However, I do think that the pacing waned here and there and that the book had maybe too many plot twists, as sometimes I got whiplash and had to think about what I was reading. Also, I do have to complain about some parts of this book. At one point of the book it uses colors to talk about race (it was a small part, where the author through the main character talks about people of all races and creeds being in a room and in danger) and I felt uncomfortable when that happened. The other part is the pinching of the nose and tilting up the head to cure a nosebleed. That’s not accurate and the nurse should have known better, but the nurse was an awful person so maybe that’s why she did that wrong lol.

Verdict: It was good! Definitely recommend this series.

4.5 stars! Well I was pleasantly surprised... keeping this story on land was a good move. And it did keep my interest. Arcade is a fantastic character! It was suspenseful and creepy. I pictured all of it because of the incredible descriptive details. I was kind of disappointed that Lucus' character didn't develop, but overall it was really well done. World Building+++

Fantastic end to an excellent trilogy. Quick and smart and creative, it has so many storylines that relate to what's happening in the real world today.

RAGING SEA: This book starts out with Lyric, Bex, and Arcade stranded in the desert looking for a place called Tempest. Most of their day is stealing from stores to get what they need. Once they are done they walk until sundown and call it a night. One of these they get caught and have to find a way to escape. This involves injuring police officers which makes them a target for all cops. They end up stealing a car to get around faster. That car runs out of gas and they new one. I loved all the events I could relate to in this book. Everything that happened was different from what you expected and it made me feel so engaged and interested. If you love action and hint of drama you'll love this book. This book is kind of similar to the Five Kingdoms series. This is a book truly everyone could enjoy.

I compared the first book to The Vicious Deep, but this one takes a far more apocalyptic turn more reminiscent of Falling Skies. The East Coast is gone (and, in at least one case straight out of the first Independence Day, a city gets nuked - "may our children forgive us"), and now, Lyric and her friends are traveling west, into more desert-y parts of the country - exactly what you would NOT expect for a story about war between humans and merpeople.

On the one hand, the story's pretty strong awareness of its tendency to fall victim to YA romantic tropes (to the point where there's a line from Lyric saying how she's "living the worst YA book ever" or something similar) is something that, by rights, shouldn't work. After all, awareness of its soap-opera nature was actually a major factor in why I stopped watching Quantico after seven episodes (that and the fact that, really, soaps and terrorism? There's a reason why I didn't even finish the first season of Homeland either.) And yet, because of Buckley's gift for high action and horrifying creature violence (the Falling Skies connection comes in because of an Alpha type that bears a suspicious resemblance to the Harnesses in its primary method of attack), it just feels like it comes with the territory.

Strangely, this book actually dials down the sociopolitical commentary of its predecessor - especially given how the current political climate is such a farce that some in my Twitter feed are breaking a cardinal rule of the internet and engaging the trolls. However, the suspense continues to build up over the course of this middle book, and it all leads up to a terrifying cliffhanger.

So, definitely give this a read, especially if you enjoyed Undertow or The Vicious Deep. However, I'll still never forgive Buckley for killing off Shadow.

Second book failure-2.5 stars
The first 1/3 of the book was slow. The people she met,her memories, her petty little fights just seemed stupid. The MC was so immature, yes i know she is young but this was over the top.
The author has the bad guys do some really heinous deeds, detailed and he has the sex scene fade to black. Yes, it actually says "fade the black" I was sick of her special unbreakable snowflake attitude that she could take them all on and win. She was like a stupid caveman with god powers. Irked me IRK IRK IRK
Then she wakes up after her fade to black night, he's gone. She's worried about telling the other girl about his choice, picking her ?!?!? Oh yes, there is another girl, a fiancee. Excuse me but their wasn't any such talk, or anything about this just a fade out.
The last 1/4 of the book was action packed, and horrifying. Children being used as weapons, dying children. There was this weird death scene where goodish guy kills bad guy, it's so instant so lame and then super bitch takes over ? WTH was that?

I was disappointed. I will continue because I want to see what happens with Fantom, who acted like a doormat in this book- sigh- I just didn't like this book. I will not be in a rush to read #3 but I will read it. It seemed like the author was confused about who they were writing for.

Hm.
I stil don't know what to precisely think of this book.
In general, it was a good read, a really good one. But some elements disturbed me, I'm mixed on my feelings. Lyric is stronger than we saw her in the first book, her powers increased and she is more determined to use it. I think things happens too fast in this book, that the author does not take the time to precise certain parts of the story.
I still liked the fact that we did not forget Fathom (Lyric and him are OTP for me) but... Well, I love his character, he's such a cute and yet weird guy. And he's coming from the sea, who doesn't like a man who's from the sea ? Lyric becomes a real badass but she keeps her human part, which is a really good aspect since we're here in quite a "real" world (you know what I mean).
There are some interessant plot twits that blew my mind, truly. I did not expect many points of the story, that's what pleased me the most about this second opus. Buuut, in my mind, some things are still happening way too fast, some important things tho.

Hope there will be a third book soon because this ending ruined my soul.

This one was just as good as the first one. The entire part where they were tortured and captured, was great (not the actual torture) but it brought a great read and add to the book. It was torturous, brought emotion and definitely kept me reading. Bex and Lyric were a bit more annoying in this book. Bex in the beginning because she wanted to hinder Lyric. Lyric at the end when dealing with Fathom. He was just doing what he thought was best for his people and she just shut him down, shut him off. She's a great and complex character, but she was definitely teenagery there. The actual invasion of all these types of sea monsters was wild. They did a great job of having this variety of monsters. I enjoyed that. The only part that was odd, and I see it was needed for the third book, but the random kidnapping at the end. Also, the two glove scene where she suddenly became overpowered. Odd. I suppose it was necessary, but it was odd.

I’m rather in shock from what just happened

3.5/5 cuz the plot jumped around so much it was hard to keep uppp

• got my transformation moment? kind of?
• follow up I need lyric to have a transformation moment not involving the gloves. she is so much more than just a channel for the sea she IS the RAGING SEA
• I get your 17 but I feel like you could have handled the fathom situation better
• Arcade getting her hand chopped off was the stupidest plotline I’m sorry I don’t make the rules
• the governor being behind everything was also just DUMB
• wth kind of cliffhanger was that ending
• it would be dumb but kind of funny if lyric was preggers with the next heir just sayin
• Doyle deserved so much better 😭😭😭😭😭

I thought I wouldn't remember what happened since I read undertow so long ago but this book was still really good! I love the character development and of course I'm still in love with Fathom and Lyric!!!! The last pages made me crazy!! So much kickass violence and so much love between everyone.

The middle book, which is usually a big miss for most trilogies, does a good job of advancing the story from the "people vs underwater people" to a more nuanced political one (still lots of craziness but now we realize the enemy isn't as clear cut).

I have learned and read about the raging sea she’s a very good children’s book. There are many books from the same author. The Raging sea is a very good intreating and slow book. If your bored don’t have anything else to do read the series from Michael Buckley. It’s bulky and awkward in the begin but once you read until the rest of the chapter it’s get better once you know you reading. These books are understandable if you read carefully.
