Monsieur became suddenly aware that he was too calm. He knew well enough that he should try to be more annoyed by the circumstances of life, little by little, in steps, to avoid the tension he was storing up exploding all of a sudden with one big bang.
Previously, he could easily have imagined two distinct entities, unhappily abstract, separate at all points, of which one, immobile was himself, who had always been rather sedentary, and the other was time, moving over his body, whereas at present the idea was coming to light inside him that there were not two entities, but only one, a vast movement that bore him irresistibly away.
People, really.
