All Marine Corps reservist Jake Chalmers wants is to give his dying wife a last, romantic cruise to the Philippines. Unable to save her in a mass murder aboard ship, he washes ashore a jungle island, where he discovers three other survivors. Heartbroken that he failed to save his wife, he is determined not to fail these helpless castaways.
Federal prosecutor Eve Eriksson rescues a young girl and her elderly great-aunt from the same ship. They badly need Jake's survival skills, but why is he so maddeningly careful? She needs to hurry home to nail a significant career trial. And, please, before Jake learns her secret that she's responsible for his wife's death.
Don Prichard is a Viet Nam veteran who served in the Marine Corps Reserves for thirty-two years before retiring as a colonel. He is also a career architect, whose specialty in government work includes the design of prisons, courthouses, and military facilities. Stephanie is an army brat who lived in many countries around the world and loved it. She met her husband at Drake University in Des Moines, Iowa, where she majored in English/Literature. She and Don have lived in Indianapolis, IN, for forty years, and in retirement have turned to co-authoring novels.
The tough rind of his exasperation sloughed to his feet. He'd forgotten about her pain in his determination to conquer distance. Barely able to walk, sore feet, sun beating on her sunburn - she had to be in agony. Really, she'd been a trooper. He should admire her resilience, ignore her mulishness.

I really liked this book. Five people board a cruise ship: Elderly Betty and her 11-year-old granddaughter, Crystal; Eve - a prosecuting attorney undercover to get her man - the evil Captain Emilio who has ties to drug rings; and Colonel Jake Chalmers and his wife Ginny. Jake was a marine in Nam. Ginny has stage four colon cancer and six months to live.
Long story short, Emilio blows up all the passengers. He thinks all 23 have died, but there are four survivors: Jake, Crystal, Betty, and Eve. Now these four brave souls must battle to stay alive on a deserted island in the Philippines. ...
In a lot of ways, this book was amazing. The writing is excellent. The plot is gripping, and the characters are fully formed. Nothing sucks me in like a good adventure story - and what could be more adventurous than being trapped on a deserted island, struggling to survive?
But there is a caveat here, and that is the fact that this is a Christian novel. After completely shredding Robin Jones Gunn's Christy Miller/Sierra Jensen series, you probably think I despise Christian novels.
Not true. Christian novels can be great - as long as the authors are subtle. Christian undertones - I'm on board! Christian overtones - I start to get annoyed. No one likes being beaten over the head with religion. I certainly don't. And the book was subtle, amazing, beautiful, and very understated until about 72%. Then the religious subtext of the book rapidly becomes text. This was disappointing. I feel like religion, God, and especially the conversion of the non-believers could have been handled in a much more muted fashion.
If there's one message I'd like to send to Christian authors, it's that subtlety and delicacy go A LONG way. Leave your readers thinking about your quiet messages - don't beat them over the head with them!
That being said, this novel was a lot of fun. Perhaps extra fun for me because I adore deserted island stories. So exciting! And I guess I should be happy that the authors were content with subtle Christianity for as long as 72% before starting to spew about turning your life over to Jesus and stuff. That's actually a lot of restraint for a Christian author to show.
But I loved the story! Giant pythons, crocodiles, living on coconuts and bananas, exploring the island, dealing with sunburn and trying to find fresh water - I eat this stuff up! There was no end to the action, adventure and excitement!
Tl;dr - Exciting adventure story about people surviving on a desert island. Well-written and gripping. Unfortunately, there is some heavy God-stuff when you near the end. But overall very satisfying.
Happiness marshmallowed in her chest.
I got this for free on my Kindle by just browsing through Amazon, they were having a special. This was entry #6 in Carmen-Downloads-20-Free-Ebooks-Onto-Her-Kindle-Day. More widely known as March 3rd, 2015.
The only saving grace of this book was that it had no vulgarity. The story was literally unbelievable. The heroine was so ridiculous that no stretch of the imagination could make her seem real. The plot was so contrived that I almost stopped reading several times. It is like reading a high school writing assignment.
i absolutely loved this book. I won't give anything away but it was great. Different from the books I usually read. I would recommend this book to anyone.
As a lover of Swiss Family Robinson type stories, I loved the adventurous spirit of this book. I love how the characters came together to become a family of survivors (in more ways than one.) I am looking forward to the sequel so that I can see how their happy little family survives life together in their old worlds.
Well written. Couldn't put the book down. I was a bit disappointed with the ending – too many unanswered questions. I understand there is a sequel coming out, so will look forward to reading that.
Mixed feelings. The story was engaging enough and the writing wasn't superb but it wasn't horrible either. This is a notch above most self-published books. It's a decent story about shipwrecked people surviving on an island and learning to live with each other. I truly did enjoy it and it kept me reading.
However, it is a Christian novel and while it might be thought that I would be a target audience, I found it a little heavy-handed myself. Just as an example: Besides that, it felt a bit episodic with so many close-calls on the island and the ending didn't really resolve the initial disaster on the ship, but overall I enjoyed it.
This was delightfully different. Thoroughly enjoyable throughout. Four quite different characters are thrown together traumatically when there is an accident at sea...or was it an accident?
'Stranded: A Novel,' by Don & Stephanie Prichard is a story full of adventure and for the most part it's believable. Lt. Colonel Jake Chalmers and wife Ginny decide to take a cruise because Ginny has been given six months to live after a diagnosis of stage IV colon cancer, and they wish to enjoy some time together while they can. They befriend eleven year old Crystal and her great aunt Betty right away after boarding the cruise ship. Unknown to them their Cruise Captain, Captain Emilio, plans to fake his own death at sea and doesn't care who gets hurt in the process. Also on board is prosecuting federal attorney, Evedene Eriksson, alias Eva Gray, who is trying to prove a link between Captain Emilio and Danny Romero, "Chicago's premier drug lord," a man they've been trying to pin charges on for the last eight years.
Captain Emilio's plan leads to Jake being stranded on a deserted island in the Phillipines with Eva, Betty, and Crystal. The action is very suspenseful and realistic in these first few chapters and gives the reader a good idea of the kind of writing that husband and wife team, Don & Stephanie Pritchard are capable of producing. Don is retired from the U.S. Marine Corps, so the details from Jake's perspective feels genuine; some of his adventures are bare knuckle, on the edge of your seat tense. From a write up of the two authors, I discovered that Don wrote the first draft of the story, then Stephanie, an English major, became more involved with the story than just correcting it's grammar. Forty-nine years into their marriage, Stephanie became co-author with her husband, Don. The reader benefits from Don's expertise in survival skills and Stephanie's ability to cohere all the parts into a finely textured work.
The novel is Christian fiction, which is not my favorite genre. Often, I find in Christian fiction that the story is sacrificed on the altar of agenda. However, I found these characters likeable and mostly believable. There is a scene with a python in a garden on the island that feels contrived. I wish I could have learned more about Ginny and what she was thinking in the first few chapters. And what was Ginny going through physically? Was she in pain? Another character, Eduardo, gets involved in some of the bad things that are happening at the end of the book. I really like Eduardo, because the authors show that he is conflicted about the bad things he is doing, but I wanted even more from Eduardo as a character. Difficult and tragic circumstances often precipitate a crisis of faith and I believe the authors show this quite well in this novel. There is character growth, which is predictable, due to the Christian themes. The novel is a tad bit 'preachy' at times, but the plot and character development kept me fully involved and wondering what was going to happen next. This novel rates a 3.5 for good solid adventure writing in the Christian genre.
This book was sooo good! I could not put it down and pretty much read thru an entire night, it was that good. The author grips your attention and you are completely taken with the story and the happenings of each character. I also appreciated how the POV was seamless between characters, I love books like that. it's nice to know what another character is thinking or how he/she feels as hardships are endured, them tragedies survived, and joys experienced. Each chapter was very detailed, the background exquisitely described that I could almost feel the humidity of the South Pacific. Jake and Eve are so different and butt heads yet find a way to work together so they can survive while trying to help the elder Betty and younger Crystal also survive. Although mostly everything they endure is really rough, there is a peace and comfort they discover where each one of them can see God's hand bring them thru with victory. great book! There are some answered issues, which makes me excited to know that there will be a sequel....can't wait for that!
Set in the early 1980s, this book defies easy categories…because it’s so strong in many of them Adventure (of course), romance, suspense, mystery, inspirational. I was eager to read this since I so enjoy stories of survival. This one ‘brings it’ and get ready for shades of Robinson Crusoe! The castaways are endearing, flawed, and inspiring. I don’t want to give any of the fun of the plot away, but rest assured, this one brings adrenaline into play. I also enjoyed the numerous allusions found woven into the drama. For example, there’s a garden on the island. The garden reminds you of the Garden of Eden — not just by description, but because of some of the things that happen there. The spiritual element is strong, but inobtrusive, and the historical accuracy is amazing. No doubt, this book will please with its incendiary plot, great characters, and gut-wrenching pathos. I’d love to sit down with the authors and ask them more about the book’s genesis.
Debut authors Don & Stephanie Prichard take the readers on a thrilling ride in their adventure debut. Tension fills the pages, sometimes letting up just enough for the reader to take a breath before the authors drag their characters into more danger. You can't turn the pages fast enough!
The characters are three dimensional and authentic. The island setting is so well drawn, appealing to all the senses, that it feels alive and the reader experiences it right along with the characters. The faith element feels organic to the story and not tacked on.
First time reading a storyline like this one. I must say it was delightful and a chore to put down. The book kept me involved and wanting to know what new trouble would find them. Troubles that found them were not sugar coated and quite in depth. Animal attacks, evil people, bad weather and injuries to name a few. Hope the next is as in depth and well written as this one.
A cruise to remember - just what the doctor ordered. Somehow life has a way of changing abruptly. Join Jake, Eve, Betty and Crystal as they discover repeatedly how very true this is! Do bad things happen to good people? Is there a God, and if there is, why does He allow bad things to happen? Will these stranded souls discover all they can be? Read on, but perhaps not while you are sitting in the woods.
I was sucked into this story from beginning to end. Even though I wanted to kill a few of the characters a couple of times I grew to love their progress and development as characters in a story woven in love. That journey thru a year on the island was fascinating. The story moved fast and kept me wanting to read more even when my eyes were so tired they crossed! Nothing like the Gilligan's island experience. Loved it!
I really liked the story. I also enjoyed that it had a Christian flavor without being "preachy." I feel like it was a realistic and accurate depiction of the struggles that a believer faces when tragedy and uncertainties strike, woven seamlessly into a thrilling story of survival. Definitely recommend. My only complaint is over the rapid, tidy ending that I think was a little too "neat."
This is a Very Intense book but done so well. The actual story was so I interesting that I could hardly put it down but occasionally it was unbelievable and too detailed for me so I paged thru some places. I love the authors' writing styles and I felt so close to the characters. I look forward to reading another of their books.
Really loved reading this book, and more so as the story progressed. Refreshingly unique from the chosen main characters to the WWII mystery. I appreciated the authors' Christian perspective without sugar coating the evil that plagues this world. Thanks for an exciting read.
Book has everything, always something happening. Would recommend to any one who, Loves adventure with surprises. Strong characters and plenty twists. I liked the dual author's seems to have both perspectives. GOOD BOOK!!!
I LOVED this book!! It kept you interested from beginning to the very end! The Prichard's were great at detailing, you felt like you too were right there stranded on that island. Really hope there is a sequel so we find out what becomes of the survivors, Danny and Captain Emilio.
I couldn't put it down. I was hooked from the 1st chapter. The story was well written and the characters were very believable. I hope authors write a sequel. I would love to find out what happens to them next.
This was definitely one of those novels that you just can't put down. I can't believe after all Jake Eve Betty and Crystal went through to end up all surviving not only the explosions on the lighters but to survive everything they went through on that island God was definitely with them there. As much as I wanted this book to end to see them all be rescued I just wanted more. I was sad that Ginny didn't survive the explosion but in the end I think it was better just knowing that she had cancer and she was going to die I was afraid her suffering would have been tremendous compared to what it have been if they were able to save her. I do think if she had survived and they were able to get her to the island her suffering would have been More Than Jake could have Baird. Yes he was so distraught over losing her but just to know that she wasn't suffering anymore had to have been a little bit of a relief to him. Especially with all the hardship the four of them that survived had to endure on this island. The first couple of chapters of a book were dry but boy I'll tell you I really got lost in this book I became one of the characters and I felt like I was living the day today hardships that they were living. I will definitely look forward reading to the next series of this adventure. And like they say you have to have faith.
This review is to cover both “Stranded”, and “Forgotten”. I’ve read other reviews where Forgotten is favored over that of Stranded. I’m just the opposite. While the characters themselves carry both stories, the scene settings and action make Stranded my favorite. Forgotten has more emphasis on the Christian Perception, where almost every action is detailed and analyzed; which interrupts the flow way way too much. I don’t mind the Christian influence, I just don’t like feeling that the reader is being beaten over the head with it. Jake in Forgotten, is an over-the-top Christian; so much that a lot of his actions, or non-actions are unbelievable. The forces of evil influences against Jake, are almost that of Job. Because of Betty, and Eve’s amnesia I found Forgotten to be almost depressing. So much so, that I will likely NOT read an expected 3rd installment. Just too much Drama.
Stranded by Don and Stephanie Prichard Starts out so typical of a cruise, people are boarding and enjoying getting to know one another. Things go downhill from there as they are escorted off the ship to life boats and told not to put on life vests. An aunt and her neice tip over and another helps them to stay afloat but the boat is blown up. Story also follows a man left on the ship and he walks into something that is not right... That ship ends up blowing up and they all wash ashore on an island. They are able to help one another and love hearing about what they discover. Didn't see this book going that way but others come to the island as if the creatures on the island aren't enough to deal with. Like the ending but didn't as it's left open to what happens next... Almost want to get the second book but don't...
