Book 4 in the Mystery Series, this adventure novel is set in 1950's Britain and will suit anyone who enjoys Nancy Drew, the Hardy Boys or the Famous Five.
Paul Moxham hails from Melbourne, Australia. He's best known for his children's mystery series which follows Joe, Amy, Sarah, and Will as they have adventures in 1950's Britain.
Another action-packed children’s mystery. This time the children, Joe, Amy, and Sarah are visiting their grandmother in the country, and Their friend Will has come along, as he always does.
They begin to explore the farm and surrounding area. When they get to the top of Claw Mountain, they hear a dog barking on the land next to their grandmother’s. It was their grandmother’s dog. He was trapped in a mine. They rescue him and decided to explore the mine.
What are they thinking? Mines ae dangerous. Don’t they realize that you should not explore a mine without a canary? There can be mine mist in mines, and it can kill you. You bring in a caary because he would die first since he is a little. If the poor little thing dies, then you run. At least they have a torch (flashlight with them.
And what happens when they go deep inside? They hear men’s voices. Ah, more danger. But these kids don’t know to run from danger. They meet it head on. If they didn’t, there would not be much of an adventure. I will tell you a secret: They run later in the story.
3 1/2 stars. Fun mystery story for kids set in 1950's Britain. It's simple stuff, but I think that's part of the fun. Just a good old fashioned adventure and kids being heroes without annoying adults (i.e. parents) getting in the way. I thought the girls missed out a little in the story, but the boys are older, and perhaps that's why they shone a little more in the story.
3.5 Stars. Reminded me or the camp x books by Eric Walters. Actually felt as if I was reading a Walters book. Fourth in the series, but you don't need to read the others to understand it. A few sentences referencing the other books I assume but it didn't confuse me.
My Grandsons like me to read these books to them at bedtime. They are very middle class and along the lines of Enid Blyton. That's a compliment if the authors reading this!
Paul Moxham – The Mystery Series Bk 4 – The Mystery of Claw Mountain – Reviewed 10/4/14 Who would have thought visiting your grandparents could lead to another great adventure?

What did I like? I guess that I have to say this, each book just keeps getting better and better. The kids are having so much fun visiting their grandparents in a new place, Scotland. They just cannot keep their noses out of the adventures. This one is sure dangerous, but I have found that the kids are so levelheaded that they can handle most anything that is thrown at them. It is also wonderful, the fact that they take the time to think things out. Even being scared does not hold them back!
What will you like? The action is really intense, plus it is on almost every page! The characters are fascinating and incredibly unique. I was blown away with the storyline. Well thought out and sure keeps up the pace throughout the book. This is a definite book to add to your kid’s library, but do not forget the kid in yourself and read it too!

The Mystery at Claw Mountain by Paul Moxham Have loved this series and books can be read as stand alones. I was able to get a lot of them for free when author promotes his books so have read most of the works. Kids are at their grandparents house in Scotland and they brought Will along also. SO many adventures as they discover the farm, lands, pond and claw mountain. Love the dog as he has super powers and he aids them in their troubles. Like that the parents allow them to sleep overnight at the shepherd hut after they clean it all up and even carry wood up the path. Love all things snow and the kids do also. They get into the thick of things when they go exploring INTO the mine at the mountain. Before long they are in deep trouble. So many events occur, they get captured, escape and caught again. Dog helps a bit and it's fun to learn about what's in the mine. Loved this book and can't wait to read more of the kids adventures. Loved hearing about the farm in Scotland and hope they get to visit soon again and do more exploring.
I really enjoyed The Mystery of Claw Mountain! It was packed with action and suspense. The criminals are realistic. In this book, I did feel like the kids weren't at careful as the other books, but it wasn't too obvious. Amy, Joe, Will, and Sarah are spending time with their grandparents for the holidays. During this time, many people act scared and warn the children about Claw Mountain. This book had two unanswered questions which I would like to know: First. Who is the creature? What became of it? Was it connected to the men? And second. How did Joe and Will escape. I think these might have been skipped because the exposition was long. Although it was packed with action, I think it would be nice to have it (The exposition) a bit shortened. But all in all, this was an amazing book and I recommend it to any adventure loving kid and pre-teen!
I don't do book reviews like you keep seeing, as I find that some give too much of the plot away and I personally hate that, as it makes the book not worth reading. I much prefer to take the authors back cover write up as a review as it can either intrigue you enough to read the book of provide you enough information to make you decide that the book is not for you. My review rules are: The more stars, the more I liked it. If there are too many typos or errors the less stars I give If the storyline or plot is poor or contains too many errors, the characters are too weak, the ending lacking something, then the less stars I give. Simple, uncomplicated and to the point without giving anything away. Some of the books I read have been given to me by the author as a pre-release copy and this does not bias my reviews in any way
Read to Grace (7) and Alex (5). They enjoyed the story. I felt that it was a bit wooden and boring in parts. Language seemed a bit limited. In the dialogue Moxham always uses, "muttered", and "frowned" turns up a bit too. Still, it was a nice clean read, and the kids enjoyed the adventure.
A nice, simplistic mystery for the younger set. It involved 2 sisters, their brother, and his best friend in the British countryside. It reminded me of the Bobbsey Twins or the Happy Hollisters. Sometimes it's a little unbelievable (like when the children get out of scrapes by surviving a plane crash or jumping in a mine cart to outrun the bad guys).
The Mystery of Claw Mountain — Paul Moxham (25 chapters) June 11-18, 2017
This is a longer story in the series. The story starts slow, but picks up once the Claw Mountain’s name background is revealed. This is another pure escapism for middle school readers. It took me a little longer to finish due to not being able to sit down and read right through it. And the slow start put me off too, but once the real mystery started, I couldn’t put it down.
The kids are on a vacation to their grandparent’s house and bring along Will. The new character introduced in this story is a dog name Jock. He adds a lot to the story. I hope he re-appears in later stories. Although this is set in the 1950’s, and this allows the author to get away with some slightly uncomfortable scenes of gender based reactions, he’s not as heavy handed as previous stories have been. And it still amazes me that the parents allow their kids to keep going on these potentially very dangerous adventures. But that’s what makes this pure escapism. I only hope other young readers enjoying this makes that connect as well.
If you are looking for a clean child-center mystery (à la Encyclopedia Brown or Nancy Drew,) this story series can’t be beat. And even though this series is set in the 1950’s Britain, it really is fun. A great break from heavier adult fiction. By which I mean, an adult reader who also enjoys reading children’s novels will enjoy these mysteries too, if you can get past the few uncomfortable, dated gender-based scenes.
Joe Mitchell along with his two sisters Amy and Sarah and his friend Will go on vacation to visit Grandma and Grandpa Mitchell. They keep themselves busy sledding, ice skating and camping out in an unused hut, but they love a good mystery. When they hear an intriguing story about how Claw Mountain got its name, they know they’ve got a case on their hands. When they stumble on an old abandoned mine they decide to go inside, but soon find themselves in some very real danger.
I loved this story! Mr. Moxham includes all the necessary elements to keep readers interested. Mystery, suspense, action and several sticky situations abound for the Mystery Kids in this book. I especially love the fact that the author has the children working together as a team to figure things out. The situations aren’t just happening to the kids, they’re active participants in the plot. Through character dialogue and kid-friendly action, readers can get a real sense of how well the children manage to work their way through any number of predicaments. That definitely makes these characters excellent role models for children.
The Mystery of Claw Mountain is extremely reminiscent of The Hardy Boys and Nancy Drew, which I absolutely loved as a kid. I would highly recommend this book (and the series) to readers of any age who want to lose themselves in a good old-fashioned mystery.
Series is alright, but the children act stupidly here!
Usual protest about the children's ages (a good 5-10 years younger than the Hardy Boys/Nancy Drew) solving these mysteries. I prefer the late teen age to the preteen one present.
That aside, this was just stupid. The children go into an abandoned/closed mine. That's boarded up. HelLO so dumb, and the author says nothing about the fact that this is dangerous and a possibly life-ending mistake. I've read these books cause they're nice and easy (and I've grabbed them as kindle freebies) but that kindof foolishness I absolutely don't want my kids to think is ok. Definitely talk to your children aboit this safety issue if you let them read this book!
This book has a good story, with lots of twists. It was a fun read, even though I haven't read the previous books in the series.
The fact that the story takes place in the 1950s could be better emphasised, I don't believe it is mentioned anywhere in the book at all. A lot of things seem less strange, knowing that it does not take place today -- but I only found out about this accidentally when I was almost at the end. The book is for children, but I found its language to be unnecessarily complicated.
The story behind the name of Claw Mountain it totally unbelievable for me, that was my biggest disappointment.
Maybe OK for a very young beginning reader, but the writing was awkward and often seemed like a term paper a student was trying to stretch to meet a page count requirement. The story was very predictable. The language was very unrealistic, for example the word 'frowned' more than 40 times and 'glanced' appeared more than 50 times. I don't like to write a negative review, but I didn't really enjoy this book.
I liked this book because it was about an adventure and how many days do you get to have adventures likes one in this book! I would recommend this book to people and kids who like a good adventure, with a little mix of action and mystery! Not scary at all, so that is good for kids... loved this book!
This book was a good mystery. It reminded me of The Nancy Drew books and The Hardy Boys. Some things were left up to the imagination of the reader like what was their reward.
This is the worst book EVER published. I absolutely hated this rubbish, terrible book. I don't recommend it though I did like the bit when Mrs Olive told them about the men.
Two boys and two girls seek adventure and it's exactly what they find as they explore claw Mountain. Their curiosity leads them to a dangerous situation but their ingenuity turns out to be their salvation. a well written story that a young reader would surely enjoy.
