Derek Landy is an Irish writer and screenwriter. In addition to the bestselling children's/YA series of Skulduggery Pleasant books, a supernatural mystery series starring Skulduggery Pleasant, a skeleton detective, and Valkyrie Cain, a young female magician, he has written two screenplays that have been made into films: the IFTA award winning "Dead Bodies" and the IFTA nominated "Boy Eats Girl". Landy himself was nominated for an IFTA for Best Script.

He doesn’t like to brag about all the awards he’s won, such as the Irish Book of the Decade, or the Red House in the UK, or all the other awards that he humbly displays on his mantelpiece. He is also far too modest to mention things like the first book being a Publisher’s Weekly Best Book of the Year, but would like to extend an invitation to Oprah to pop around one day for tea, in thanks for selecting his book for the Oprah’s Book Club Kids Reading List.

Derek plays too many video games, reads too many comics, and watches too many movies. He lives in Ireland with too many cats. Occasionally he talks to real people, but only when he absolutely has to.

This book was AWESOME. It’s my first book of Derek and it will not be the last.

I cannot remember reading a book and having so much fun. Do you know the CW’s show Supernatural? Well, this book is just like the show. It’s funny, adventurous, slightly creepy and addictive. In the first few seasons of Supernatural, whenever an episode started, there’s this creepy moment and then boom! A spray of blood and the title card. Demon Road started just like this. The book grips you from page one and you just cannot stop reading. It’s quite a big book (500+ pages) and yet I finished it quickly.

They smiled at each other, and she gave his hand a little squeeze and went to let go, but he held on. His eyes found hers, and they softened, and he leaned it.
“I swear to God,” she said, “do not try to kiss me.”
He faltered. A moment passed, and then he hugged her arm and let it drop. Another moment passed.
“This was so awkward,” said Amber.

Amber Lamont, our main character, can sometimes be a little whiny and stupid. But it didn’t bother be that much. I mean, I would be just like her if I found out my parents are demons and that they want to eat me (literally!). Her whole world is shaken up, she’s freaking out and oh yeah… let’s not forget about those horn she has. The fact that she has her weak moments is totally understandable and I wouldn’t have wanted in any other way. Amber had her brave and badass moments. She’s amazing and I loved reading in her point of view.

But my favorite character of this book might be Milo. The guy with the badass car (a 1970 Dodge Charger that eats people) and a million secrets. I liked him immediately. Through the book, we get to know him a little better, but I wanted more. I would love to have a little prequel about him! He surprised me a lot during the ending and I cannot wait to see how he will be in book two.

“Now just wait, Amber, okay? Yeah, there are times when we’ve butted heads, all three of us, but that’s what makes us a good team. We each contribute. You’re the brain. Milo’s the muscle. Me? I’m the heart.”
“No, you’re not.”
‘Then I’m the soul.”
“You’re not the soul.”
He frowned. “Then what am I? I’ll be anything.”
“You can be the appendix,” said Milo.
“Then I’ll be the appendix!”

Then we have Glenn. Oh Glenn… He was always talking. He just couldn’t shut up. Sometimes you wanted to pinch his cheek because he’s too cute. Sometimes you wanted to slap him in the face. Either way, you still automatically like him. He weirdly fitted with Amer and Milo. He made everything so funny. But… I didn’t think he got enough attention in the end and that made me very sad :(

Character development is very important to me, side characters included. But they were all brilliant. Her parents and their friends were the creepiest and most disgusting bunch ever. I loved it. I even loved Edgar and The Shining Demon. The supernatural creatures were awesome. This book is full of adventure, blood, humor and action. The ending was brilliant! It ended on a sort-of cliffhanger and I’m dying to read book two (March please be here soon)!

Instant silence.
Except for Glenn.
“Ohhh my God! Holy crap! Would you look at my arms? See the goosebumps? What the hell was that? That was creepy! Oh yikes, y’know?

The only negative thing I can say about this book is: it’s not a real thriller. I don’t know about other readers, but to me a thriller is a book that makes me scared and freaked out when I’m alone reading at 11PM. I didn’t got that feeling while reading Demon Road. The last 100 pages were more disgusting than creepy. The fact that it wasn’t a “real thriller”, didn’t changed my opinions about this book. I thought I should mention this, because I originally thought this would be scary as hell.

I would definitely recommend this book to readers who love a good supernatural book. It isn’t focused on a forced and twisted romance, which makes it even better. Pure awesomeness, combined with lots of fights, blood and humor. A perfect October read!

By the way:
I saw this gorgeous Limited Platinum (and SIGNED) edition at Waterstones in Brussels last week! So pretty!

I'm so conflicted about this book. On one hand, Amber really pissed me off with how naive she was during the book, but she somehow redeemed herself (too little, too late?). Combined with the most annoying character I've ever met, Glen with his constant blabbering and lack of self preservation, it was just such an annoying read.

On the other hand, there were really cool parts though, like all the supernatural occurrences and creatures that they needed to avoid. Lots of blood and gore and hair-raising action scenes.

Full review to come!

---

I’m conflicted about Demon Road. On one hand, I really liked the supernatural creatures and the anti-hero main character, on the other, the characters really annoyed me which resulted in my struggling to finish the book. Therefore, this is going to be a tough review.

What I liked

- Supernatural setting. When I first read the blurb, I thought it was exactly like my favourite show, but it added so much more to the plot. Although finding someone for the crossroads demon is the main goal of the book, Amber and Milo made multiple stopovers along the way which lead to different supernatural encounters. A sinister serial killer, vampires, demons and hexes which made it so exciting! I loved the variety and the depth in Demon Road.

- The anti-hero demon. Amber is the demonic spawn of her monster parents and she’s running away from her parents who want to eat her to gain more power. But as a demon herself, Amber kills people and does demonic things from time to time. I loved how the lines of good and evil were blurred here, Amber isn’t really the picture perfect heroine.

- Hilarious witty dialogue. Each of the characters are zany, with Amber’s naivety, Glen’s blubbering self and Milo the mysterious protector. They engage in some hilarious dialogue with each other that was really entertaining.

- The blood and gore. If you haven’t picked up already, there is a lot of blood and gore in Demon Road which leads to exciting action scenes and demonic moments.

What I disliked

- Amber’s naivety and stupidity. I mean she’s a BADASS DEMON for god’s sake, who could have gotten herself out of any situation. But 80% of the situations in here could have been prevented, where she trusts someone, believes their lies or does something completely stupid. For example, she wants to admire her demonic form, and changes IN A TRUCK STOP REST ROOM! Where anyone could walk in! She believes the lies of a tricky serial killer and gets herself trapped in a dollhouse! There were so many situations here where I wanted to reach in and slap Amber silly.

- Glen’s annoying clingy self. This guy has the gift of the gab and babbles incessantly throughout the book which annoyed the crap out of me. Doesn’t matter what situation it is, he’ll garble on throughout the road trip, dangerous situations and even when there are people dying or being killed. Glen just won’t shut up or go away because he thinks Amber and Milo are friends with him.

- The weird, random slights at Amber’s looks. There were multiple times during the book where random people would pop up and point out just how ugly (not even plain) Amber was as a human. I believe the words, troll-like and fugly were used. What the hell? After the 4th time I was sick of it. Yes she’s incredibly stacked and beautiful as a demon, but what was the point of telling us over and over again just how ugly Amber was as a human?

- The amount of times Amber randomly fell asleep. I’m just being picky now, but throughout multiple exciting action scenes in the book, where Glen gets taken away or where they’re investigating someone, Amber falls asleep. Whhhat? I wouldn’t be able to fall asleep with all of that happening! But somehow Amber is able to do that easily.

IN SUMMARY

Filled with wit, action and gore, Demon Road was an fun and exciting supernatural adventure featuring the antics of an anti-hero demon, a cursed Irishman and a mysterious older protector. It’s characters were vibrant and filled with personality, however some of these polarising personalities grated for me. It’s my first Derek Landy and I love how snark and witty the writing is, and I look forward to the rest of the series.

But seriously, what’s with that cover. It’s more offputting than anything.

I received a review copy from the publisher in exchange for an honest review.

Actual rating: somewhere around 3.5-3.75 stars, rounded up because I did enjoy it, overall. Most of it.

I'd probably give four stars to the first three quarters of it, and .. 2.5 to the last bit, or something like that, but I'm very sure there are people who will love the final bits, so there's that.

Anyway. I should say right away that - as anyone who knows me even a little bit will probably be aware of - I'm a huge fan of Skulduggery Pleasant. This is both a good thing and a bad thing when it comes to reading (and reviewing) Demon Road because comparisons are going to be inevitable. And I was both anticipating this book and rather expecting to be disappointed, because really, how could anything measure up to the glory that is Skulduggery?

So I was a bit anxious, really, when I got my hands on the ARC (thank you, HarperCollins!), and started reading it last night. Would I love it? Would I hate it? Would I go "well, it's an okay book, but somewhat disappointing?".

The answer, as said above, is that I did in fact enjoy it. Most of it, anyway; most of it a very great deal.

It absolutely has all the things that have become Derek Landy's trademarks: the wit, the humour (slightly less of it than in Skulduggery Pleasant, possibly, but plenty there), snappy dialogue, rounded, interesting and well-developed characters, including even very secondary (or tertiary, etc) side characters who only appear in one or two scenes. Fighting. Lots of fighting. Gore. Lots of gore. Action, adventure, chases, fantastical creatures, a cool classic car.

In that sense, I suppose it didn't really feel that different from Skulduggery: anyone who is a fan of that should probably enjoy this, I think. It's also definitely different enough in its plot and setting that it never felt like a rehash of the same basic story, which can be an issue with some writers with one massively successful series under their belts. Characters... well, yes, there are obvious basic types that Derek seems to like - there's glimpses of China in some of the characters, Glen who unfortunately brought to mind the most annoying parts of Fletcher and Scapegrace combined.

The good.

The characters! Well, most of them. I loved Amber's parents. I liked Milo, although I think it might take another book or two to really get a handle on this guy; what I saw so far, I did like. I think. He has potential, anyway.

Most importantly, what with her being the main character and all, I enjoyed Amber.

Also... hm, I guess the general plot? And pacing. I didn't have problems with that really - I enjoyed the slower bits as much as (if not more than) the faster-paced parts. The flow was good and I only put the book down once, when I really had to go to sleep and there was just a bit too much left to persist. Otherwise it was just hours of reading, which isn't something I've managed a lot this year.

The less good.

Glen. I'm sorry, but I just never really warmed to him, for a multitude of reasons that I will not go into here because I want to keep this as spoiler-free as I can.

The fighting and the gore. I know, I know; how can I be a Derek fan and not enjoy that? Honestly, that was always my least favourite part of the Skulduggery series, and - what I think didn't help here - I've been desensitised enough by now that very little in the last 15-20% of the book either really excited or shocked me, so it was all kinda ... meh.

Anyway. Other than the obligatory gory fighting stuff, did I love it? Yes, I did. Not as much as Skulduggery, no, but more than I frankly expected to. I came to care about Amber and her plight very quickly, there were bits that made me grin and bits that made me nod appreciatively, there's enough intrigue about this world and certain characters that I very much hope to learn more about them. As I said above, I could barely put the book down, and I am very much looking forward to the second instalment, out in March.

Absolutely recommended for anyone who likes a bit of darkness in their YA (this really isn't "typical YA", whatever that means, even though it's got demons and a cool 16-year-old female protagonist in it - and the basic premise in particular would, I think, be considered fairly dark even for fans of dystopian or zombie stories, although this doesn't belong in either of those genres), doesn't mind a light tinkling of horror & splattergore and likes some fun.

* ARC of this book was provided by the publisher through NetGalley in return for an honest review. Thanks!

“How easily the hunter can become the prey. All it takes is a new perspective.”

I'll be completely honest, I picked up this book simply because the cover intrigued me. Then I realized it was the author of Skulduggery Pleasant, a book I picked up in high school; I never finished the series, because I didn't realize it was a series at the time and picked up the third book not knowing what the hell was going on. In saying that, I've known many people who read and liked the series, so I couldn't wait to see what else Derek Landy had come up with.
"When you're on the Demon Road, you dont really talk about the Demon Road. Its considered...crass. You can mention it, explain it, all that's fine.. but just talk about it. And don't call it that, either."

16 year old, Amber Lamont has always thought her parents were weird, cold and unloving, nothing like the parents of her peers- she didn't know how right she was. As things start to unravel, Amber must go on the run, she will no longer know who to trust, the things she uncovers and sees will change her life, her world forever. Vampires, serial killers, killer cars and red skinned demons will open her world up to all that once seemed like a fantasy. Jumping from one threat to the next, Amber will need to be one step ahead, if she wants to stay alive.
"Fine," she said. "What would you call it when I change?"
Glen's grin was immense " Getting horny."
"Oh, I hate you so much"

The plot of this book was like WOW! I loved every single minute of it. Derek Landy put a lot of thought into keeping this book fast-paced, exciting and keeping the reader on the edge of their seat. As soon as you think things are quietening down, the roller coaster begins again, with even more at stake. So much was added to this book, and yet I still wanted more. Thankfully I already have the next book and have started reading it, because it would be so painful not knowing what was going to happen next and having to wait.

"It's the principle of the thing. Wherever possible, you do not antagonize serial killers. That's just a general rule of life."

I liked all the characters. Amber Lamont is your typical teen, well, kind of. The secrets with her keep coming and coming. She is ballsy, determined, smart and witty. Milo has a few secrets of his own, but a real asset to the team and in Ambers survival. He is resourceful, a bit moody, a quiet kind of guy who is always one step ahead. Glen is a bit of an idiot, with the Death Mark imprinted on his skin, he doesn't have long to live unless he can track down the intended person of the Mark and be saved. He is a sensitive, naive, foot in mouth kind of guy.
The banter between the gang is hilarious, and one of the way Derek Landy adds a little brightness to such a dark, gloomy book.

In all, I loved it, I recommend it, and I cannot wait to finish this series. I will definitely be keeping an eye out for more from Derek Landy, and I might even go back and read the Skulduggery Pleasant series. If you haven't read this book, pick it up! Its an adrenaline-filled ride coated in darkness and filled with all sorts of creatures.

http://www.writingis.fun/chudovishta-...

Demon Road is without a doubt, one of the most entertaining releases in young adult this year. Following the storyline of sixteen year old, average teen Amber, her life previously lacking friends and relied on her online presence to socialise with her peers. Her parents barely acknowledge her existence, but rather are too consumed by their group of hipster friends who are not above mocking Amber purely for their own amusement. But their cruel intentions run much deeper than hurt feelings and along with Amber's parents, feel an entitlement to Amber's life. Sending Amber on the run to survive.

When your parents feel the need to sacrifice you to a demon, chances are that you may need to align yourself with allies who can aid your survival, and the gruff Milo is being paid handsomely for his services. Milo isn't a father figure, in fact he barely communicates without precise intentions, making for a very tedious road trip. He ensures that Amber will not only survive, but thrive as she hunts down the only opportunity she has to escape her parents and their sacrificial contract on her life. But what would an incredible storyline be without at least one bumbling and kindhearted idiot... Enter Glen.

Irish, persistently annoying and desperate to be part of Amber's journey. I adored him. We need the slapstick characters in young adult to break up a storyline and add an element of unpredictability throughout. Glen added a lighthearted, comedic tone which only enamored me more to Amber's plight. But fear not lovers of paranormal and urban fantasy, Glen isn't a love interest, I'm not sure he'd know what to do with the opposite sex when faced with the opportunity. He's likely to fall into a barrel of topless women and still emerge sucking his own thumb.

Fantastically written, snarky and utterly charming despite the psychotic demons. Who knew that Derek Landy was not only a brilliant author, but hilariously entertaining! I simply loved it and can't wait to see where he takes this fresh and phenomenal new series.

Actual rating 3.5

Amber’s having a hell of a time lately. She’s having troubles at school, getting in fights with people who used to be her friends, her parents are acting more weird than usual, and now they want to kill her.
Betty met her glare with one of her own. “This is your one chance. The only chance you’ll get. If you walk away, we’ll come after you, and I personally will eat your heart, young lady.”
Amber backed out of the door. “Love you, too,” she said, and ran.

So now she’s on the road with a mysterious guy who drives a car that would be at home in an episode of Supernatural.
“You see any rust?” Milo asked, not rising to the bait. “Storing an old car in this humidity is not generally a good idea, not for any length of time, let alone twelve years. But she’s different. She is pristine. Under the hood she’s got the 440 Six Pack, three two-barrel carburettors, and 390 horses. She’s a beast.”
“Yeah. Words. Cool.”

And an Irish guy named Glen who thinks he’s irresistible to all womenfolk, and can’t take a hint, but at least he’s entertaining.
Glen jogged back. “What? What are you laughing about?”
“Nothing,” said Amber, trying to contain herself. “Did you learn anything?”
“No,” said Glen. “Turns out that old guy is German and doesn’t speak a word of English.”
“Then what were you arguing about?”
Glen looked puzzled. “How should I know?”

DEREK LANDY IS BAE. But for realsies, this is awesome. I love Amber. I love that she isn't like Katniss or Tris or anything other than a freaked out overweight teenager who doesn't always get it right. I love her character development throughout the book. Also Glen. Glen is good value.

[I received a copy of this novel through NetGalley, in exchange for an honest review.]

Mixed feelings here, as some things I definitely liked, and some others rather bored me.

(For the record: I have never read anything else by Derek Landy, so I cannot compare with his Skullduggery Pleasant series. I guess it's for the best, as I can judge this book as standing on its own, then.)

There's a fair share of good ideas in this novel. The strange bodyguard with an even stranger car that definitely sends bad vibes (and digests people). Deals with a Demon, a real one, that doesn't like being cheated and will demand rather gruesome things in payment (not just souls: it's also in how they're harvested). Characters able to transform in demonic creatures. The Road itself, carrying them onto weird paths and into weirder encounters. Little towns that look so nice at first, yet quickly reveal their true colours. Serial killers and creepy doll houses. A wooden witch that has her own human quality in spite of all her wrongdoings. Blood and gore and fighting—and the author doesn't shy away from those, nor from offing characters, I'm not saying which ones.

There's dark humour, too, sometimes in dialogue, sometimes in situations or descriptions. It fitted well enough with the overall serious matter of Amber having to run from her parents, since they want to kill and eat her. Her parents. Who are great in their own ways, see the scene where they handle the school's principal, and this is where, straight from the beginning, you realise that this family is definitely a screwed up one.

However, I couldn't warm up more to this novel, for two main reasons.

The first was the plot itself, as it quickly assumed a repetitive form: get in the car, arrive in new place, look for information, get into dire straits, solve issue, get into car again, rinse and repeat. There were vampires (of the rather traditional type) and witches and killers, but... after a while, the pattern became monotonous, and I found myself sometimes skimming to get faster to the final confrontation.

The second was some of the characters. Milo was alright, and hilarious in his own deadpan ways, although there's quite some room left for more development here. Amber... I couldn't decide whether I liked her or not—I'm somewhat annoyed at the whole "dull, vaguely fat teenager that every other guy calls ugly, but who turns into a sexy demon" (what's wrong with being just plain average, and why did she have to be called on it anyway?). As for Glen.... Uh, he's the kind of character you will either find incredibly sweet and bubbly, or incredibly annoying from being too chatty—and also too stupid to live. After all, the guy ended up with a certain dark mark for basically just... nothing? Being an idiot? I just couldn't stand him anymore after a while.

There's no romance, though. No useless love triangle. If only for that, I am glad!

I'm still somewhat interested in this series, as the ending opens up on pretty gloomy and dangerous prospects, but this will be more the kind of novel I'll borrow from the library, not buy. 2 to 2.5 stars.

We're all monsters. Metaphorically, I mean. The whole human race. We hate, we kill, we do terrible things to each other and to the planet.

4.5 stars
I love this book and I'm so glad that I took the time to reread it.
The whole setting (supernatural quest, a classic car, road trip all over America, motels, monsters in every corner) reminds me of Supernatural, my favorite tv show ever. The writing is typical Landy, dark, sarcastic, lots of magic. It all reminds me a little of his Skulduggery Pleasant series without giving me the feeling of copying his work. The dynamic between Milo and Amber's amazing but (and some might not like me saying this) Glen really gets in the way of that dynamic. I don't like him and I don't really care what happens to him.

WE'RE ON A HIGHWAY TO HELL.

Oh my god, I'm still amazed I actually read this book. I half expect to wake up any moment and find out it was some weird fever dream. Thanks to some wonderful Harpercollins employees, the RADDEST FRIEND EVER (Kribu, you are a gift from god), and a lot of nagging on my part, I managed to get my hands on this book 3 weeks in advance.

I spent the entire day reading in a fervent daze and can not wait until this book is released for the rest of the world so i can scream about it at people. I had INCREDIBLY high standards - SP is my favorite series, and I generated a LOT of hype in the year since this book was first teased - and I was still BLOWN AWAY by how much I loved it.

It's not perfect. I wanted to smack Glen the whole book. The book does much better when he's not in it - he's like if Scapegrace and Fletcher had a baby and that baby was a drama queen - but there were lots of funny moments from him/as a result of him which made it a bit better. Due to him I think my rating would be more like a 4.5... or a 4.75.

There are also some characters/dialog that are VERY reminiscent of Skulduggery - I don't think the characters were EXACTLY like the SP ones, but they had very similar archetypes (with different personalities.) Not a weird SP AU fic, though, thank god. :P

It was FUN and horror filled and AMBER, I LOVE AMBER LIKE SHE IS MY OWN CHILD. (i'm hesitant to say too much about Milo - as he's like a walking spoiler in himself - but I loved him too!) The side characters were great too, especially Amber's parents. (glen can take a long walk off a short pier)

also shipping is going to be insane in this fandom, buckle up (HA, HA, PUN)

I didn't mind the length - i enjoyed all of the little adventures and subplots - but am worried about that length when the next book is out in 7 months. Hopefully it doesn't hurt it too much. Can't wait for the next one.

GO GO DEMON SQUAD.

Closer to a 4 and a half.
This one pleasantly suprised me. Much more grown up than the Skullduggery Pleasant books, Landy manages to move very well into the YA / adult style.
No romance at all in YA fantasy Major bonus points for the author .
Really good story and idea , and gets you in its grip quite early on.
It gets quite nasty, and holds little back in a plot fueled by demons and serial killers , some of these being the "goodguys" in this story .
It got a tiny bit bogged down in the late mid section with incidents on the trip with a witch encounter probably not needed for the overall story but only a temporary setback and recovers well for a really strong well though out finish .
Some very intelligent moments and the introduction of the lost Irish guy brings a strong comic relief that manages not to grate .I'd definitely recommend this not just to Landy's fans but other fantasy readers.
Definitely be following up with the series.

THINGS THAT WERE FANTASTICALLY BRILLIANT AND THEREFORE I LIKED VERY MUCH

+ Amber! Amber wasn't perfect, she could be annoying, make stupid decisions and be as exasperating as a lid of a jar that just. Won't. Come OFF., but I think that's why I liked her so much! She was also brave, compassionate, smart and made an awesome demon! ;)

+ Other characters! NONE of these characters were boring although *cough* they reminded me slightly of the Skulduggery Pleasant at times...not that I minded at all though! ;)

+ That ending!! OMG THAT ENDING. *brain blows up* That whole book was worth reading JUST for the ending!

+ The CAR. Hehehhehehe, that car made me laugh SO much! It very definitely had a life of it's own and was probably one of my favourite things about DEMON ROAD.

description

it ate people a little bit like this

+ THAT ENDINNNNNNNNG. Derek Landy just knows how to write good endings that end on painful cliffhangers and make you want to stick a fork in your eye. URGHHH. Where is book two?! Please don't tell me I have to wait another year!
+ It didn't have the dry humour that Skulduggery Pleaseant has, but it was still funny! And I laughed a lot which is ALWAYS a good sign!

THINGS THAT MADE ME GRUMBLE AND EVER SO SLIGHTLY CRANKY

+ I couldn't help feeling that it was WAAAAAY to long. I thought at least 100 pages could've been chopped BUT THAT'S JUST ME. I just found it seemed to take my attention away from the story but it was still good!!

+ I loved the killer car but...was a) disappointed that the way it ate people was kind of boring and b) I felt like half of the book was just spent IN the car and the other half actually running around having adventures and killing things and avoiding being killed themselves!

+ It definitely lacked the humour that was so bountiful in Skulduggery Pleasant. It was still funny, but not AS funny and the humour didn't feel fluid but a little forced. I still enjoyed it, but I was a bit sad that the Skulduggery edge didn't seem to be there.

+ I found it to be quite slow in a way a book can be slow when it's based around a girl trying to find a way to stop her demon parents and friends trying to eat her while road tripping with a guy who owns a car that is literally alive and likes to eat people and other awesome things happen, but for about 95% of the book I felt like we were going at this really slow steady pace and then BAM! That last 5% was so action packed and thrilling and just AMAZING and really, really fast paced that I thought the whole book is worth reading just for the last 5%.

+ It's set in America. So one of the things I adored about Skulduggery Pleasant was that it was set in Ireland! IRELAND!! It was different! It was refreshing! I loved it! And while there is absolutely nothing wrong about setting a book in America...90% of the YA books I read are set in America.

OVERALL

I LOVED this book! Eeeeek where is the next one??!! Sure, I had a few problems but in the end this book is REALLY good. GO AND READ IT NOW!

WHO KNEW I COULD LIKE PARANORMAL? NOT ME.

Although, let's be honest, Glen was one of my favourite parts of this book.

But I loved how this was PACKED with awesome stuff - demons and vampires and witches and cool things. Full review to come!

_______________________________________

WHO would have thought that I could ever enjoy a paranormal?

Not me, that’s for sure.

BUT I ended up really enjoying this book. Despite the fact that it’s wildly different from what I usually read (ie sappy contemporaries/heart-wrenching contemporaries/basically…contemporaries).

I think my FAVOURITE part of the book was Glen.

He’s this character who’s picked up along the way. He’s kind of like a sad puppy who keeps tagging along despite not being wanted. He’s kind of adorable. And talkative. REALLY talkative.

Basically, he adds humour to a novel with man-eating cars, and I think that’s pretty impressive.

And of course, Glen’s not the only humour – Demon Road is filled with Derek Landy’s characteristic wit and hilarity.

I mean, I’d like to take him seriously, but I mean, a MAN-EATING CAR? That’s just too hilarious to take seriously. And despite villains I wouldn’t want to meet down a brightly-lit alley (never minding a dark one), there are moments of humour that just make it so much more appealing than other YA paranormal books out there.

Plus, there are just SO many things happening!

There are vampires and witches and demons and all sorts of things. Even people shrunk down and trapped in dollhouses. Yep. Derek Landy may actually be crazy – I’m withholding judgement until I read the rest of the Skulduggery Pleasant series.

I think a LOT of the time what puts me off paranormal is the insta-love/love triangle/dramatic teenage angst. None of that is present here.

And, yes, there was a Supernatural kind of vibe going on. Even though I’ve only seen like three episodes. Okay, mostly because of the car, if I’m being honest.

And the sass. The sass was good.

My only real complaint was with the length.

There were a LOT of detours and I felt like some of the plot points were stretched out unnecessarily. And, you know, don’t listen to me because I’m already prejudiced against big books. Because I’m just a simple-minded peasant, remember?

PLUS, Amber got on my nerves occasionally. I honestly would rather have had Glen as a narrator. Because he was hilarious. Best sidekick ever.

(and by that I mean worst)

Oh, and the ending got INTENSE.

Because apparently your parents trying to eat you isn’t intense enough, Derek Landy brings out the BIG GUNS. Because while Skulduggery Pleasant is arguably for a middle grade audience, this is young adult. This is BLOOD.

So yep, Derek Landy has convinced me of the worth of paranormal YA, and that is no easy feat, so hats off to him – and read this book!

Thank you to HarperCollins UK, Children's & Derek Landy for my copy in exchange for an honest review.

Holy hell mother of all demons!! WHAT JUST HAPPENED?! This book is amazing I couldn't put it down.

This is the first time I have ever read any Derek Landy's books and boy am I glad I got the chance to read this one! It's full of action, nail-biting moments with some pretty weird friendships that I totally love. I always love a little romance in books but this had so much going on that it didn't need it seriously think about it... who has time for romance when there is serious butt to kick?!

The story follows a young girl named Amber who just like any other teenager thought she lead a pretty normal boring life, yeah her parents were a bit odd but who has parents that are completely normal? Certainly not me or my friends. She has an ordinary job, goes to a pretty posh school and only really has friends online (again like most teens) but suddenly her life changes... one headache at a time.

Amber is a demon, and I don't mean just any old regular demon (do you get regular demons? in my mind you) but full blown mother & father demon DNA. She finds herself in a spot of trouble which sends her on a quest making some unusual friends and in some life or death situations. She is pretty weak at the start of the story, just a normal moody teen but then grows so much in the story that you really get to know and respect her. She turns from the whiney teenager into some kick ass machine that starts to make some tuff decisions that I really liked.

My favourite had to be Glen, he was hilarious! His one liners had me in fits of giggles from the start. He was so witty and always made everything light hearted which made the book, my heart was racing with his story and the banter between him and Amber was awkwardly amazing.

The story was top notch honestly, there was so much going on a I couldn't keep up but I was engrossed I just wanted more! This is a must read and I can't wait to move onto book two.

“Milo turned to Glen. “What about you? Can I trust you not to do anything stupid?” “I am a creature of the night,” Glen whispered. “That’ll have to do,” said Milo, and hurried out.”

My excitement at receiving this book!

Derek Landy is an author that I have heard so many good things about - 90% of those were probably from Amanda - and he's an author whose books I have wanted to try for quite some time. Demon Road instantly appealed to me, not only because it sounded awesome but also because it reminded me quite a bit of Supernatural, which just happens to be one of my favourite TV shows. When I received a signed ARC of this book, I squealed with excitement because this was a book I wanted to jump straight into and devour. And I did, all 500+ pages of it in less than a day. Having now finished the book, I can say that Amanda was right about Derek Landy and that Demon Road is a fantastic supernatural YA read, that had elements that reminded me of Supernatural and made me love it even more.

It must be said that this book starts with one of the greatest opening sentences, one that grabs your attention straight away and makes it rather hard to put the book down:

Twelve hours before Amber Lamont's parents tried to kill her, she was sitting between them in the principal's office, her hands in her lap, stifling all the things she wanted to say.'

reaction animated GIF

That sentence was enough for me to feel confident that this was going to be a book I was going to enjoy. I'd known it was a roadtrip style book, one that would see our character travel across the supernatural US, whilst on the run from demons. I didn't know those demons were her own parents, who were rather eager to end her life. It's not every day you read a book where the main characters parents are out to murder their own child. It definitely added something different to the story.

Amber is a really interesting character who is dealing with quite a lot. It's quite rare that you find out your parents are demons who want to kill you and then eat you. She handles that quite well, probably a lot better than I would handle myself in that situation. I will admit that she has a habit of making some really terrible decisions. I honestly hate characters who fail so epically at making decisions. But Amber can also be quite the badass heroine when she wants to be, so I can forgive her for her poor decision making skills.

Supernatural Castiel animated GIF
This is me about 80% of the times

 Amber makes a decision

This book offers a whole host of weird, wonderful and downright creepy secondary characters that add so much to this story. From Milo, the stranger that Amber finds herself travelling across the US with in his car, both of which aren't what they seem. To Glen, a funny companion that they pick up along the way, who has only 40 days to live. To a whole host of creepy, supernatural characters including an undead serial killer and vampires.

ROADTRIP!!!

The story itself is one that is action-packed from beginning to end. It's a roadtrip book - something I love - that sees the character travel across the USA and running into a whole host of supernatural characters and a whole host of trouble. The deeper into the supernatural world Amber finds herself travelling, the worse her situation seems to get. She needs to track down a man who even a ridiculously powerful Demon has been unable to hunt down, otherwise she will have no power against her parents. I found it impossible to put this book down because I had to know what would happen next. As soon as one situation resolved itself a worse one would pop up and make it so I couldn't close the book until I knew how it turned out.

My one and only grumble with the book would probably be that it felt a little lengthy at 500+ pages. A lot happens in this book, it's what makes it fell so action-packed, but it also works to make it feel like maybe too much is crammed into this one book. Sometimes it could feel like it was dragging in places and maybe could have used with this being a little shorter.... or some of it being put into the next book.

4/5 Butterflies

I really did enjoy this book and how impossible it was to put down, it's also made me desperate to get my hands on book two - I am sure the wait for that may actually kill me! I loved the whole cast of crazy, weird, supernatural characters and how dark this book could be in places. It could get pretty grotesque in places, which could be hard for me to read as I am quite squeamish, but I kinda loved that about it. I became far too invested in the story and gave up much needed sleep to find out how it would all turn out. I'd recommend this to anyone looking for a fast-paced, action-packed YA read, especially if you have a love of all things supernatural.

- романът спокойно можеше да е с редуциран наполовина обем и нямаше да загуби нищо от този факт;
- хореографията на битките беше изключително еднотипна и досадна;

The whole time I was reading this book I was thinking to myself, why aren't I enjoying this more? Our heroine, Amber, is pretty awesome. It's definitely action-packed and full of descriptive and gruesome scenes of blood and guts (which I enjoyed- mostly, some of it got REALLY intense). There is a fantastic vein of humour running throughout and I was actually laughing for a good bit of it.

I think what was holding me back from enjoying it more was that it didn't seem to have much depth to it. I loved the premise and it started off really good but it got into a kind of tv series thing where something would happen, danger everywhere, and then it would be solved. Moving forward, something else would happen, problem would be fixed. It happened like four or five times before they got to the big climax and then that was sorted.

Now, if that's the kind of thing you enjoy then you will probably love this! It's well written and the characters are great. It could be just that I'm becoming more mature in my old age ;) but I just wanted something more!

Thanks for HarperCollins for the arc!

I received a fantastic signed proof of this from the ever lovely publishers at Harper Collins!

Absolutely phenomenal.

A belter of a book filled with demons, gore, heart pumping action and endless humour and sarcasm.

Demon Road is exactly what you'd expect from Derek Landy and then some!

Amber, Milo and Glen are the new dream team that everyone wants a piece of...literally.

A rip roaring ride across the blackroads of America filled with monsters at every turn, and as Amber soon realises...not all monsters have horns.

I cannot wait to read more! Pity I have to wait even longer for the sequel now!!

I love Derek Landy, I love him so much. I really do, although I have to admit that I've only read the first two Skulduggery books so far. As soon as I heard that his new book was coming out just in time for Halloween I knew I had to get it. Well, so here it is. It took me only like four days or so to read it because this book is pure awesomeness.

Demon Road is without a doubt one of the most entertaining releases this year and one of the best books I've read so far in 2015.

Demon Road tells the story of sixteen year old Amber, average teenage girl with a lack of friends and a huge internet presence which means more to her than her actual real life. Her parents barely acknowledge her existence and spend more time with her weird friends than with her own daughter.

Their cruel intentions run much deeper than hurt feelings; they actually want to hurt her what actually forces her to run away if she wants to survive; if she wants to live. But she isn't alone on her journey across the supernatural landscape of America. There is Milo who is being paid handsomely for his services. Milo isn't a father figure, actually he's the total opposite of that. He doesn't speak much and all he wants to do is fullfill the order he was given. They end up being on a road trip to escape her parents but what would a good storyline be without a warmhearted idiot?

Glen. An irish annoying young men who has to bear his own deathly cross and who is desperate to be part of Amber's and Milo's journey. I'm still not sure what to think of him. At times I loved him; totally adored him actually but at other times all I wanted to do is slap him right in the face to shut him up. But what he did was, he added a comedic tone to that whole bloody and cruel storyline what I absolutely liked. I also liked that Derek Landy didn't make him a love interest. It was so nice reading a book without a messed up lovestory.

I absolutely like Amber. And how much I like her. She's not that typical YA heroine. She's overweight, awkward, average and doesn't look like a supermodel and she always tends to make the wrong desicion BUT she's also strong and tough and i just loved her from the beginning of the book. And then there is Milo. Milo, my bae. I can't even tell you how much I love him. He's awesome; he's my hero. He's always so serious and has so many secrets what makes him so mysterious. He's such an interesting character and super super nice. I fell in love with him right away.

There is so much action in this book and so much blood; it's amazing, mind blowing and just so so good. It's the perfect fall read and I can't remember the last time I read such an amazing scary book.

The end actually left me behind with a little shock. In the end Amber does something what I haven't expected but this made it even better. Because usually YA authors like to play safe and this book doesn't. Not at all. It's fantastically written and so charming despite all the psychotic demons, witches, vampires, serial killers and so on. I knew that Derek Landy was brilliant but I didn't know that he can be so funny. I simply loved it; well I adored it and I don't want to frikkin' wait so long for the second book to come out. If you haven't read it yet, you should all make sure to pick it up as soon as possible because this book is awesome.
