'Good dog! Best friend!' is one of the most underrated plot-twists in this whole convoluted psych-outs filled piece of media!

ACT THREE:

i don’t feel like doing the stupid character breakdown thing this time. i'm just gonna talk about whatever i want. is that cool with you?

wow breaking the fourth wall. i think i’m getting a little too comfortable here.

the beginning of this act makes me so unspeakably happy. this truly is the jade act. she breaks every rule of introduction that has been set thus far and i love it so much. her grandpa worries me, her narcolepsy worries me, and her memory problems worry me, but nobody’s perfect.

compared to act two this one held my attention a lot better. hussie very cruelly continues their pattern of bait and switch whenever the stakes for something got too interesting but i guess that’s just how this story’s gonna work. there’re are also way more animated sequences now which is super awesome.

anyway,

SPOILERS AHEAD :B

i can promise you that whatever comes next in this review will not be in chronological order

FAVORITE PANEL:

truly, the art in this act is so so so cool. this panel in particular is just so evocative. this act i think is where hussie starts to find her footing with coloring and i love it. the way the color shifts as more and more parts of rose’s environment catch fire is a close second. genuinely, distressing.

but also…

yeah…

jade’s colorful finger reminders make me very happy. executive function is difficult when you have a sleep disorder and live in two worlds at the same time.

CG: HI AGAIN, IDIOT.

i’m happy to say in these 395 pages we finally figure out that dave is not cool. he says the f slur once which makes me deliriously happy because i am a dope and a fool. then he goes on this big long rant to an asleep jade about a/s/l, yiff, and his new fursona. ironic intent or not, knowing what these things are disqualifies him from being cool. this delights me.

TG: bro just kicked my ass
TG: thats really all there is to say on the matter

i think it’s really messed up that when dave tries to abscond in his fight with his brother, it says something like, there is no absconding with bro. i don’t like that. i don’t like that he throws him down the stairs and breaks the symbol on his shirt in half. i don’t know what that means but i certainly don’t like it.

baking dad egbert is kicking ass like usual and i love him.

i love john’s letters to all his friends. there so uncharacteristically sincere for homestuck thus far and it means a lot to me. i think it’s cute that jade and john wear each other’s favorite colors.

the little white mailman is so cute. i love them.

i asked my dad to explain bitwise “and” & “or” to me for this comic and it didn’t work. i have come to terms with the face that i’m just not going to understand the esoteric computer science theory based crafting system of this comic.

CG: YOU DON'T GET THAT I AM BETTER AND SMARTER THAN YOU IN EVERY WAY, FOREVER.

i did not know gushers were made by betty crocker and i find that fact deeply upsetting.

the last part of this act moves really quickly and has so many back to back perspective shifts. i also was in a much worse mood when i read the last half because i had just gotten mouth surgery, and was coming down off valium which apparently isn’t fun. i also really love reading out load and I CANT DO THAT ANYMORE. I HAVEN”T SPOKEN IN A DAY AND TWO HOURS. IT’S AWFUL.

anyway, sorry for the vent. i liked this act just as much as the others me thinks even a little more.

Finally back to this, and it came with a bang

Pacing did feel all over the place at times, especially with the constant jumps in chronology, but as a setup for the future, it is incredibly promising. So many interesting things built up to that are all going to explode outwards in the upcoming acts. (I'm still so incredibly confused, but I get the general picture and it's all cool)

Jade is a really nice new addition to the cast, and even if I'm completely lost on her motives, she seems to be cooking up a storm

(and Dave did lose aura but then immediately gained it all back at the climax, my fucking goat)

wait what do you mean act 3 is that short

Breezed through the entire act in a couple of hours, which I was really not expecting. I suppose later acts really skew my mental picture of how long this shit is.

Act 3 was fun and obviously includes more iconic memorable moments, but the pacing did slow down a bit and it was just a bit less engaging - the character development is fun but it just feels like less actually happened than in previous acts. I know that's not the case going forward though, so... intermission time, I guess!

It’s time for time

Fun chapter, Jade is really interesting and kinda weird, her Bass is sick.
Peregrine Mendicant and the Aimless Renegade are fun, I love how devoted the future guys are to their interests plus they are silly little guys.
Jack or Spades or whoever is cool too, love how much he hates harlequin hats, seeing John’s dad owning all the imps is great too.
The art is rad too, love how Hussie draws detailed buildings and castles cool art style, music is also really good this act.

This was so much shorter than I thought it was gonna be??? Anyway, I loved it. Again, SO MUCH FORESHADOWING. And it was nice to revisit Jade's introduction, the concept of dreamselves, Jack Noir, and other cool things!

Time travel, mystery, and for some reason, a lot of actual information about data structures. Yep, that's Homestuck, baby. Also, The Trolls are starting to get teased. I love this shit.

The fourth main character is finally introduced, and fire threatens to burn down a mansion. Homestuck, Act 3, by Andrew Hussie, things pick up and really hit the fast-pace, as Rose combats fires to keep her house up, and Dave combats his brother to stay up. The beginning of this chapter finally introduces us to Jade, the fourth friend/main character, currently, a narcoleptic 'awake dreamer' meaning she sleeps more than she's awake, but her 'dream self' awoke quite early, making her able to control a robot version of herself in her sleep, Dave remains relatively absent during the first half of this Act, and what little you do see of him, he is getting completely beaten in his duel with BRO and Little Cal, who is BRO's demonic puppet hellspawn horrorterror abomination of nightmares. Once routed back to rose, she goes to the crypt of her dead childhood pet, Jaspers the cat, who was preserved atop a pedestal, which later is revealed to be a trap door, and following the corpse into the trapdoor, Rose finds an Appearifier machine, which is able to move things out of there given time-frame, so long as it doesn't create a paradox, which results in a viscous green slime, this machine later shows Rose how Jaspers dissipated, which was the last she saw him prior to being discovered dead, when he was appearified from a separate machine. Once Dave has been completely beaten by BRO and CAL he manages to get down from the roof, he connects to rose as fires engulf her house, and sets up equipment as fast as he possibly can, the two work together in deploying the KernalSprite, and the Totem, which rose places in the machine, this creates the BOTTLE, Rose's version of a game deployed portal, Knowing she can't successfully enter the game, Rose prototypes Jaspers into the kernel, and a shock-wave causes the BOTTLE to roll off the roof, as things wrap up, Jaspersprite adds the necessary second part to his programming with an octopus-princess-squid doll and Rose dive-bombs off the roof to catch the BOTTLE, Jaspersprite catches her and as the meteor looms downwards, she slams the bottle to the floor, in order to move her house out of impending death's way. This act itself is incredibly long, as each act grows progressively longer as the story progresses, and then sub-Acts longer than acts, in it's depth and complexity it can hardly be imagined this review could have done any justice as to the story itself, which has much more than the aforementioned aspects contributing, an excellent addition to the series which i would also recommend to anyone and everyone at all.

Now, more than ever, I need to actually review as I go along, because there's so much going on that if I don't, I'm going to get even more mixed up than I was between Acts 2 and 3. Yeesh.

There are many things that happen on many different time lines in this Act.

The beginning introduces Jade, the fourth player, finally. And the time line just goes downhill from there, because just about everything Jade does messes with the time line in one way or another.

Rose notices this weirdness with the time line by following the progress of her dead cat using a machine she finds in a laboratory, buried underneath her dead cat's mausoleum. Also, her dead cat has been cloned into a four-eyed mutant cat.

Very little of Dave is seen in the first half of the Act. Most of the time the story cuts to him, he's being attacked by his brother and Little Cal, and not really holding his own. His part in the story kind of sits off to the side until the very end of the Act.

John's father fights his way through the evil lair of Jack Noir.

John weeps over the Betty Crocker lie that is Fruit Gushers, but also manages to figure out exactly how fusion and card codes work. (I'm assuming that the game guide write-up of fusion and card code generation was in this chapter - like I said in my review for Act 2, I got the beginning of Act 3 and the end of Act 2 kind of mushed up in my head, so I'm not entirely sure. I just know that I tried looking for that exact page, but couldn't find it. And I'm not going back through both of those chapters to try to find it again.)

The Mayor of Cans ends up not being alone (Serenity aside), as there are also a Mail Lady (who is apparently a lady) and the protector of some ruins that were, in the past, in Jade's backyard. If she even has a backyard? Is the entire island technically her home? I DON'T KNOW!

I've been trying not to think too hard about the time line, and just go with it. It's really the only way to cope.

I'm not even going to attempt to summarize everything here. There's just way too much.

Each Act continues to be a step up from the previous one. 3 here was more interactive than Act 2 was, and with more explanations and Jade's place in the story finally being filled out, some things actually started making sense. Especially towards the end of the chapter.

Nota Personal: O sea, son 7 Actos, o 6 no sé exactamente, y vi una especie de índice de la historia y... DAMN THERE IS TOO MUCH TO READ!!!

YUUPPPPP I KNOW THATS RIGHT!!!!!!
Act 3 is really where plot begins to start. Foreshadowing, thy name is JADE. I've been poisoned to her character later one (IDK maybe I fell for her facade?? I'm working on unraveling this one) but I really do enjoy her early character. Her precognition as a result of constant exposure to Skaia is so interesting -- as well as her narcolepsy, caused by another thing I don't want to reveal on the off-chance that someone reading this review hasn't read Homestuck before.

I'm constantly delighted by the Carapicians. I'm also delighted by the fact that (in spite of this being probably around the double-digits of times I've read this comic over the 12 odd years I've been a fan), I actually don't remember why every single plot event is happening.

I also don't remember what movie Dave's shades are supposedly from ....!!!!!!

Loving all the time paradox + appearifyer nonsense, though -- these closed loops being essential for plot development (in the typical paradox space it's already happened so it must happen, ect) makes my brain go insane.

Rose entering the game is so hype moments and aura. Girl, why are there fire tornadoes weaponizing a 20 foot wizard statue. It's just so ROSE. I love it.
