I’d honestly thought I’d read everything there was to read about healthy eating/dieting/detoxing in the past 7 years since I developed life-changing autoimmune diseases seemingly overnight, but here is something I’ve not seen: food combining. The idea is to optimize digestion by enjoying just food from just one group (fresh fruit, starch, animal protein, or nuts/seeds/dried fruit) with unlimited raw or cooked non-starchy vegetables, thereby gifting to your body this extra energy not spent on digesting that then aids in healing through other means. Huh! Outside of leaky gut, digestion is not something I think about, and though I am very aware that the American diet of processed foods and large portions is not ideal, have never questioned the mix of foods on our plates. Meat, starch, veg with white bread and a glass of milk was my Mom’s staple dinner in the 70’s. I eat differently as an adult, as everything is different now. Thus far I haven’t tried the food combining because I skipped right to the recipes. I will add an update after trying it.

Overall, this epitomizes the new style of “cookbook,” with its spare, attractive photos that scream simplicity. It’s chock full of helpful hints for maximizing results with meal plans, shopping lists, pantry staples and kitchen tool suggestions to assist the reader in adopting a healthier menu. What I love about this book is the emphasis on being realistic rather than perfectionist. Most of the recipes are simple (some tread perilously close to my definition of “not a recipe”) but I believe it adds to the ease of transitioning to this way of eating. As is often the case with this style of eating, I would be hard pressed to satisfy my husband with these “meals”, but I have enjoyed everything I’ve made so far. I will say that in my opinion, some things cannot recreated without dairy, and goats milk is where I draw the line, so I will be making the Mac & cheese to see for myself. I borrowed this from the library, so I will renew & follow up. 4 stars for now

Even though I do a lot of cooking and baking, I don't own many cookbooks. In fact, I just realized that this is the first cookbook I've ever purchased myself. Most of the recipes I use I find online, but I'll Everyday Detox is an exception. It's filled with a wide variety of recipes that fit in with a lot of different diet types.

Being that I'm allergic to gluten and dairy and avoid refined sugar at all costs, I can safely make and eat everything in this book. A lot of recipes that fit my diet have a long list of ingredients, which I try to avoid, so I love that all of Megan's recipes are simple, especially the baked goods. No needing half a dozen different types of flour just to make cupcakes!

I've made around a dozen recipes from the book so far and they've all been delicious. My favorite is the raw lemon bars, which were so good I made them twice in one week!

I'm using this cookbook as part of a new regimen-guided by my awesome holistic nutritionist-to re-vamp the way that I eat (which, by the way, I thought was overtly healthy; turns out I was in the right neighborhood but not the right street).

The power of whole and raw foods and the ridiculous transformations that they can make for your health doesn't mean sacrificing the tastes and kinds of meals that we love.

Every recipe in this cookbook looks so delicious, easy to make, and cost-affordable. I've just begun to delve into it but it's most definitely a keeper.

This recipe book left me hungry, and not because it sounded delicious - because every recipe left me feeling unsatisfied.

The idea is that you should eat mostly vegetables and only combine them with ONE of the following categories at a time: fresh fruit, starches, animal protein, or nuts/seeds/dried fruit.

The author uses lots of references to scientific studies to convince you that this "food combining method" is the best way to be healthy and lose weight, yet specifically writes: "there is an unfortunate lack of peer-reviewed scientific research when it comes to food combining" and "this approach remains relatively controversial and lacking in solid evidence at this time."

I received this book from publisher in exchange for an honest review.
And oh god, am I happy that I did!!!
This book is right up my street. If you are interested in healthy eating you will love it. I have not heard about the author before but have now come to love her style of informative writing and the simplicity of her delicious recipes. The first section is incredibly informative and easy to follow. The author also gives you short cuts and kitchen staples you shouldn't go without. I know that certain things might be on an expensive side but that unfortunately is the downside of healthier eating...
Her seven day detox plan is also good and in my opinion easy to follow.
I loved the photos of the delicious recipes as well. Beautifully presented book.
I will definitely recommend!

This book is amazing! I have followed the blog of Megan for quite some time now and was extremely excited to see that she had a book coming out. The book is right to the point when it comes to pairing foods. She makes it very simple and its so easy to get! I love how every recipe lets you know if its Starch, Protein etc and how it lists the different options to make the recipes vegan, nut free etc. By far my most favorite book!! This girl truly has an amazing future!

I got this book from the library because I had read a review of Gilmore's new book No Excuses Detox, which wasn't yet available at my library, so thought I'd check out this one in the meantime. In addition to recipes, the author explains her strategies for combining foods for healthier digestion and natural weight loss. I have to admit I just skimmed the science portion as well as the food lists and combo charts. I was mainly interested in the recipes. I ended up marking 12 of them "to try." Some of the recipes that I passed over didn't seem hearty enough (no protein) or too involved, or else I already have a similar version. The author also has a website that explains her healthy food perspectives and lots of recipes. detoxinista.com One important element missing from her recipes - the nutritional info.

This was awesome! I followed the plan for a full week of whole/food combining meals and was amazed that I was always satisfied and rarely craved for anything else after I'd eaten. It's very helpful if your body just needs a reset. Several of these recipes I'm going to keep and add to my normal diet.

Fabuloso!!! A great read. Motivating. Stupendous recipes. I love her low-key approach to nutritional changes. She adds variations at the end of each recipe for meat etc., so that diets on the spectrum can be accomodated.

The usual healthy ingredients (quinoa, granola, etc.) but in new ways. None of the recipes really jumped out at me as an “oh make it right now” type of dish, but they are good ideas for starting on a health journey.

"Dear Food,
It's not you. It's me.
I've just discovered I've had a dysfunctional relationship with you all my life."

So begins my imaginary letter to one of my life's great loves after reading Megan Gilmore's new book, Everyday Detox: 100 Recipes to Remove Toxins, Promote Gut Health, and Lose Weight Naturally.

I found the introduction and premise behind the book to be both fascinating and insightful. I had never considered that there might be a different experience other than feeling gassy & bloated after eating. Also, I have a very difficult time sticking to any plan that asks me to give up my nearly 50-year desire for something sweet. Gilmore states at the outset that her plan does NOT make you give up those sweet indulgences, nor the pasta or potatoes, nor any other food that you might enjoy. She simply asks that we begin to rethink the need to consume ALL the things we love at every meal. (What? I can still have some chocolate now and again? A muffin? Mac-n-cheese? That's HUGE!)

Gilmore suggests that so many of our digestive and weight issues stem from the fact that we are eating the wrong foods together. She presents some "new rules" for putting meals together which ultimately bring more good news: these meals are simplified, quick and easy, and made from better ingredients (which lend more nutrition, taste, and ultimately satisfaction to the experience). She suggests that we eat meals focused on one food type (think animal protein, nuts & seeds, starches, etc.) with a host of supporting "neutral" cast members (typically, non-starchy vegetables) on the side.

After laying out the method and philosophy, Gilmore then presents a host of recipes from smoothies to packable lunches, satisfying dinners and even sweet treats. She lists out how to stock your pantry and kitchen to make her plan a lifestyle and not a passing fad. She advises that even if you don't want to follow the well laid out plan for a full week of detoxing, taking her advice on what foods to avoid eating at the same time and eating more whole foods (versus processed foods), you are sure to feel better (no more bloat! less gas! higher energy!) and possibly lose some weight at the same time.

I for one am very stoked to dive in and put these ideas into practice. I would love to come away from the table feeling satisfied and full of energy rather than ready to curl up on the couch and nurse the pain under my ribcage. I can't wait to try some of these recipes. (The chia cereal/pudding is at the top of my list!) I'd like to thank Blogging For Books for the review copy I received in exchange for this review!

I kept looking at the scrumptious cover image for "Everyday Detox", from author Megan Gilmore, and finally, I said out loud: "Yes, I want this food--this is the way I should learn to eat!". I know a good amount about food and cooking, and I am not unknowledgeable about healthy eating. I just don't put theory into practice often enough, and as I approach the age of sixty, I need to make changes in my diet. I want sustainable energy, good overall health, mental acuity, and I want to sleep like a baby. I may not achieve all of these goals--I may achieve some of them some of the time--but I can eat well and feel well in the process. Megan Gilmore has expounded on the principles of food combining, incorporating her own life experiences into the mix, and produced an insightful, inspiring cookbook featuring 100 recipes for optimal health and eating enjoyment. This is real food, made with real, easily-obtainable ingredients. The introduction to food combining is followed by segmented chapters detailing recipes for types of dishes by category. Here are just a few of the recipes I found that include some of my favorite foods: "Broccoli Cheese Soup"; "Chocolate Pecan Crumble Bars"; "Banana Coconut Muffins"; "Peppermint Fudge Bars"; "Caramelized Onion & Red Bell Pepper Frittata"'; "Seasoned Sweet Potato Home Fries"; "Simple Sauteed Kale"; "Carrot Ginger Soup"; "Zucchini Lasagna"; and "Strawberry Lime Sorbet". The user-friendly size and layout of the book, along with beautiful food photos, will encourage you to rattle those pots and pans to the rhythm of food combining to naturally detox and revitalize your body and spirit. There are many more recipes, and much more food for thought in this life-changing cookbook from author Megan Gilmore.

I asked for and received this cook book for Christmas. I've been following Megan's blog for years, since before I got pregnant. Her recipes are amazing. They are simple and fairly quick, but most importantly they taste delicious. It has made it so much easier for me to avoid refined flour and sugar. It's also helped me make healthy snacks/meals for my toddler especially since she is lactose intolerant. Her dietary requirements have made this book and Megan's blog invaluable tools for me to feed my daughter since she does not use much dairy at all. My daughter can handle some goat cheese.

From the book I've made the cauliflower pizza crust (with gorgonzola & carmelized onion as per her website), cauliflower fried rice, the broccoli soup, the lentil chili, chia pudding, chocolate chia shake, apple pie smoothie, banana nut smoothie, almond butter freezer fudge, chocolate chip cookies, banana pancakes, banana nice cream, and the red pepper/spinach/onion/goat cheese fritatta. All of these have been kid approved except we didn't love the lentil chili, it was a little bland and my daughter might not have loved the texture of the lentils. But she gobbles up the broccoli soup and the frittata, etc.

This is the one cook book I actually use so I highly recommend it. I'm already excited to get her next one.

4.5 great recipe stars

ARC generously provided by publisher via Netgalley in exchange for an honest review.

So this book has detox in the title which would make you think that it is going to be a fast or a crazy diet detox regime. Well wrong. This book is all about learning to eat foods that are good for your body, things what we were meant to eat, including meat if you choose, instead of all the artificial crap that is in our food today.

It also guides us thru the world of food combining, what types of food to eat with which so that our bodies can properly break them down. I have read a few books about this topic and this one has made it the most simple easy to understand. Ms. Gilmore lays out simple rules, as well as a suggested diet plan, and some wonderful recipes. I have already tried a few and cannot wait to try more. This book is keeper.

I have been looking for ways to eat healthier, to help loose weight, without tasting like diet food, all with no success. When I was offered the chance to receive this cookbook, I was a bit hesitant. However, reading through this has made me want to try out almost all the recipes in this book. Nothing about this screams "I taste like cardboard!".

Now I may not have tried any of these recipes yet, so I can't give you my honest opinion of the taste. But what I can tell you is that the food sounds amazing. Even the desserts sound appetizing. So in my honest opinion, I really can't wait to try out the delicious looking food in this book. You should be running to your local bookstore and picking up your copy today too!

Really lovely book, very informative and, best of all, sensible! I got lots of good ideas from reading the breakdown of the eating plan, and the recipes...look so good!

I've heard about food combining before, and the way Megan explains it makes a ton of sense. She lists the foods in categories and says one can fill up on nonstarchy veg if still wanting more to eat. Alternatives are supplied for vegan, sugar-free and omnivore, so the plan is adjustable for all kinds of eaters. The meals simplify eating, while the body digests the foods completely for maximum nutrition.

Well-written, really nice pics.

I loved this book! I purchased it on the recommendation of my sister and boy, am I glad I did. I can't wait to try the cauliflower rice recipe, as well as the almond fudge, just to name two. But really, every recipe in the book sounds delicious to me so I'm sure I won't stop at those two.

3.5 stars, I attempted several of the recipes and I'm not sur wig I just did them wrong or what, but they didn't all taste very good...some were delicious! Others not so much. And the more I read about the diet itself, the more confused I got and he more complicated it felt...full review to come!
