Rapunzel isn’t the stereotypical Damsel in Distress. Her Bad-Boy Prince Charming is a renowned mercenary, and their Happy Ending plays out like a bad movie. However, she is determined to breakout from her tower prison—love be damned—and do it in a fabulous pair of heels. *** Gunned down by the Mercenary, the deadliest assassin in The Badass Archives, isn’t exactly Rapunzel’s end-game. Falling for him isn’t either, but his Rated-R demeanor is strangely charming. Even though most girls wouldn’t fall for their captors, Rapunzel isn’t like most dames. Her major girl-boner for the Mercenary is so pathetic it verges on cliché. Yet, in spite of his appeal, Rapunzel must escape before she’s locked away in the Château de Immortelle’s highest tower—forever.
Award Winning Author, Sarah J. Pepper, specializes in fantasy and paranormal romance. She unveils the beauty of love in her new adult/young adult novels. Her works envelope dark, paranormal romance - think "happy ever after" but with a twisted, dark chocolate center. Real-life romance isn't only filled with hugs, kisses, bunnies, and rainbows. True-love can be more thoroughly described in times of darkness and tribulation. It's in those harsh moments where you see what a person is truly capable of - both the good and bad. Locks is written by Sarah J. Pepper and is a modern retelling of Rapunzel. In Locks, Rapunzel (or Zel) is determined to escape her tower prison but is brought back and put under watch by a Mercenary that she finds herself insanely attracted to, despite her better judgment.
I was REALLY excited about reading this book. I actually settled for The Death of the Mad Hatter while I was waiting for this one (which I ended up really enjoying). Needless to say I came to this story without much time in between the two books written by Sarah. While Death of the Mad Hatter is a young adult book, Locks is written for a vastly different audience.
Locks starts out as Rapunzel has escaped and is cornered about to be caught. The sexism of the book is really right in your face right away. I have no problem with this, but I was caught completely unaware after the darker, yet much more innocent Mad Hatter. Although the only actual “sex scene” in the book is more PG-13 than rated R, just a lot of sexual tension throughout the story.
Sarah has written a lot of creative characters that I was able to connect with on the level that I could know them through Zel’s feelings. Unfortunately I feel that the description of the majority of the characters fell a little short. I could talk a lot about how everyone made Zel feel, but if I had to draw a picture of most of them I would be left wanting. The environment does lend itself to better descriptors though. Flynn, is described in magnificent detail, as he is the object of much sexual tension throughout the story.
Locks reads like a mystery novel, trying to constantly assess and reassess the allegiance of many of the characters and figure out how it will end. With that being said, I feel like there was a lot of lead up to a slightly fizzle of an ending. The wow factors of things missing from Zel’s memory were written superbly, but the battle was short and not overly detailed. The biggest disappointment for me was the Epilogue… I wanted to know what happened to the ancillary characters as well.
My biggest negative points were the weird technology references that seemed thrown in. If Zel has been locked into a tower and no one speaks as she does, I wonder where she learned some of her “potty mouth” language from. It didn’t bother me, but may deter a more prudent reader. My issues was with talk of things such as cell phones, and then have nobody use them, while the kingdom doesn’t really deal in technology, it seemed rather out of place, and like Zel wouldn’t know much about it since she spends most of her life in a tower locked away from people.
Overall I give this book 4/5 stars. Sarah has a lot of ingenious ideas; she created some really great ideas for characters and some crazy twists and turns to the story. I love the spunk and fire in Zel’s personality, I love her development as a strong woman throughout the story. I love many of the ancillary characters and the possibilities that could come about with them. I love the twists and turns that the story takes. I have to hold back a star for the seemingly out of place tech talk, the weak ending and epilogue. Otherwise, it is definitely a story worth reading, there is a lot to love in it. If you are into fairytales, especially Rapunzel, mystery, fantasy, mythology, Romance, etc., you will like this book.
I've read this book already because I'm one of the editors. Yes, you may all hate me & make voodoo dolls in my honor. So, okay, I just, how do I even start? We all know the story of Rapunzel, right? Well, Sarah took that story & turned it on it's head after tatting it up & throwing in some magic. Rapunzel? Yeah, she's the princess you wish Disney would make a movie about. She isn't some damsel in distress, she isn't cute or sweet, she isn't a princess & she sure ass hell isn't looking for Prince Charming to swoop in and save her. She is all venom. She is sarcastic, feisty, brave, strong, vicious & the girl you want to befriend in school but at the same time you're terrified of. Her leading man? Yeah, he's so far from a knight in shining armor that he's a borderline villain. Don't get me wrong, he's mouth watering & all, but most of the time you'll probably want to punch him...with a brick...repeatedly. This book lead off with action & didn't stop until the very last word. I was never bored. I was constantly on the edge of my seat & lost HOURS of sleep because I just couldn't stop. I promise, this book will take you on a roller coaster of emotions. I cursed Sarah at times, pledged my loyalty to her at others & threatened her life multiple times. You literally have no idea whose good & whose bad until the last moment. You will constantly be guessing everyone, looking for hidden meanings & be ripping your hair out from the suspense. This book is the fairy tale your mom didn't tell you because she wasn't reading it herself! It is worth a lot more than 5 stars & if you only read one book this year, I say read this one! It is all action, love, magic, suspense & AMAZING!
First I would to mention that I received this book for free in exchange for an honest review from the LoP group.
I had a hard time getting through this book. It wasn't what I thought it would be. There was just so much of Rapunzel escaping, Flynn capturing her and bringing her back where she would be punished . For me just that it kept happening was too much. I liked Flynn , he had so many different sides to him but the fact that he really did love Rapunzel made me happy.
The best part of the book was at the end when Flynn had his vengeance but also was there to save Rapunzel and finally when they did get their somewhat of a happy ever after. It was just too much violence taken out on Rapunzel and then she had to heal herself over and over.
I received this book in exchange for an honest review (LoP or Lovers of Paranormal)
Wow, what can I say. This took my favorite fairytale to a new height. Feisty and confidence, not your ordinary Rapunzel I would say. And that hunk of mecenary, I was wondering is he the good guy or the bad guy......until the end of the book. Sarah J.Pepper really spin my heads, just to get my nose off this book is really difficut. The adventures and suspense really something to look forward to.If you're looking for something out of the ordinary, this book just might be it.

New favourite book. Couldn't put it down. A real page turner. What can I say other than this is going to be the version of Rapunzel I tell my kids- which just to clarify are none existent at the minute and will probably be more than a little way away. I have honestly loved every minute of reading this book with its interesting plot twists, turns, backflips and somersaults.
The main characters are Zel and Flynn are straight out of a biker bad boy paradise or at least that's how they are in my head. Zel being Rapunzel has been trapped in her tower for her whole life up until shortly before this book when she escapes. Flynn is of course the man working for the sorceress keeping her trapped, during this book Zel is very much sought out to become the leader of a rebellion against the sorceress keeping her trapped. Flynn on the other hand is Zel's watcher trying to make sure she doesn't escape due to a contract signed by the sorceress while at the same time trying to turn her into the person who could lead the rebellion. Flynn from the beginning says he is not to be trusted and that is something the reader should keep in mind as it may cause a few less heart wrenching moments where you really aren't sure if he's playing the part or not.
The secondary characters are very much part of the rebellion or the sorceress and they really do add to the story either moving the plot along or providing giggles. I loved the characters in the rebellion and thought the sorceress was very well written especially once you learn the back story of her.
The pacing was brilliant keeping information back until it was necessary for it to be learned allowing readers to sink their teeth into and fall in love with the characters before moving the story along to focus on something else. I also liked how the relationship between Zel and Flynn was paced, giving them time to become familiar with each other before forcing them into a relationship.
The story line was fantastically original, and it didn't stray too far from the original story just offered new insight, twists and turns as well as more character developments than what was offered in the original story.
5 stars. I loved, loved, loved this book and probably will enjoy it everytime I read it after this.
the story was an alternate version of Rapunzel. but instead of a Damsel that needed rescue, this version of Rapunzel was every bit as feisty as it could get. she spoke her mind, was sarcastic and a true fighter despite her poor battle skill. she was held captive by Taryn, her mother who yearned for her Theurgist power. with her around, Taryn was able to remained youthful and could freely manipulate her time controlling power. Flynn was a Mercenary hired by Taryn. despite their hate towards each other, they signed a contract to protect them from one another. when Flynn was assigned to supervise the locked up Rapunzel, they fell dangerously in love, forming a relationship that could very well kill them both.
i was given this book in exchange for an honest review (Lovers of Paranormal). for the first quarter of the book, i was overwhelmed with the details compared to what i expected of Rapunzel. her tough personality was such a attractive side of her yet the love struck girl whenever Flynn walked into the room was far less alluring. but at some point, especially after adapting to the person Rapunzel was, i found myself looking forward to every minute they spent together, also the repetitive failed escape attempts, which was a lesson each and every one of them. the book was most rewarding when it came to Rapunzel's growth. from tons of aimless escapes to planned strategies, she outsmart everyone but of course never Flynn, who was always one step ahead of her. there were often times when i couldn't quite figure out where his loyalty laid, but the twists were welcoming as it made the book so much more interesting. i was pleased to find myself loving more than the main characters, even some of the supporting characters and villains were intriguing enough that i wanted more time with them.
It took me a while to actually get into this story, probably because it felt like the beginning of this book was a recap of a previous story, but it's really not (or maybe it is and I just couldn't find any other book with these characters in it). The way some characters were brought into the book seemed like the reader should already know who each person is, and though a bit of information was given on the characters, I found it hard to actually visualize a few of the characters.
The first 30% or so of the book seems to be repetitive with Rapunzel attempting to escape and being captured each time by the Mercenary (Flynn, which may or may not be his actual name). But exactly whose side is Flynn really on? On the whole, Rapunzel isn't your typical damsel in distress and she sure ain't waiting for no Prince Charming to come rescue her. But too bad for her that she has zero skills when it comes to planning and fighting, hence the reason she's caught by Flynn eleventeen times at the start of the book. The story really starts to pick up once Rapunzel is visited by Kinsley and learns of a bombshell that no one could have predicted.
The sexual tension between Rapunzel and Flynn is awesome, and I enjoyed the changing dynamics of their time together. I will say that the ending wasn't quite what I expected, for all of that training that went on, the battle ended way to quickly. But still, this was a very enjoyable story and I'm glad I got a chance to read this.
Oooh! Watch out book world. This one is frackin' awesome!
Who likes fairy tale retellings? You? What about you? Me... Well, I used to think that I wouldn't be able to get into a fairy tale retelling. I've read a few really good ones in the last few years but never thought "Ohhh, a fairy tale retelling! Let me pick that book up!" You know? When I heard Sarah Pepper was going to be writing a Rapunzel spin, I was so excited. I mean, c'mon, have you read her spin on Alice?!?! If you haven't, you MUST go get Death of the Mad Hatter! Loved that book.
Locks was an absolutely brilliant spin on the old fashion tale of Rapunzel! It was fresh, exciting, surprising, and so much fun!
The characters that Sarah created are one of a kind! Yes, even though they spin from the old Rapunzel tale, they're creative, fresh & seriously one of a kind. Rapunzel, AKA Zel - Ahh! That girl's attitude and spunk! Love her!
The plot for this tale took me in a completely unexpected direction. I never expected the directions that the story took. I loved that about this novel! I couldn't put it down and had so many laugh/snort moments, I can't count how many times my husband or whoever happened to be near me in public gave me the "wtf?" look... Ha.
The world building was incredible. Everything was so vivid and detailed just right! I was transported to another dimension! It was so awesome.
I was one of the lucky ones to get this awesome book as an arc, and I do mean awesome! First off I LOVE FAIRYTALES. So let me also say that when someone tries to retell a classic fairytale story, I am a critic. Just for the fact that I love them so much. Locks is the retelling of Rapunzel. The author did an amazing job in the way she made a usually defenseless damsel in distress needing saving, become something different although the tatted up Flynn was still there. You didn't know where his true loyalties were. The story had me wondering till the very end. The author still left all the values to the original story there. Which I found very refreshing. She added a spice and I do mean spice that had me turning the pages faster and faster. The sexual tension between Rapunzel and Flynn was hotter than hot! I CANNOT WAIT to read more from this author. She did an amazing job. Thank you for letting me read your work!
I was given this book by the author and Lop in exchange for an honest review. This is a very well written story the author did an excellent job of creating a world that the readers falls into. This is a completely fresh and unique take on the story of Rapunzel.Rapunzel isn't your ordinary damsel in distress and her prince charming isn't all that charming .I loved that Rapunzel was strong and sarcastic it made her character so much more interesting and relate-able definitely the kind of girl I'd want to hang with lol. Flynn is a hot mercenary who isnt always a good guy I think that makes for an even better story as no man is perfect it makes him more real. This book will take you on a wild ride full of emotion.I definitely recommend it .
I received this book from the Author in exchange for an honest review by the “Lover’s of Paranorrmal” Group on Goodreads.com
This book is bloody fantastic. It is essentially a modern retelling of the Fairy tale Rapunzel. Rapunzel is held captive by her evil Godmother Taryn. But instead of the demure damsel in distress, she is a sarcastic feisty character (despite her terrible battle skills). Her Prince Charming is Flynn, a renowned Mercenary. This book is a fast paced and very entertaining read that will have you turning the pages until the very end. The story is well crafted and very well written. I will be looking for more of this talented Author’s work.
Wow I finished this last night i was a bit apprehensive about reading this book to start with as my normal genre is young adult, middle grade type fantasy. I rarely venture into new adult. I have to say i was delightfully surprised with Locks. Sarah J. Pepper does a great job of mixing fantasy, love, danger and excitement into a delightful tale that keeps you guessing from one leap to another. I thought the dash of adult love situations where balanced nicely with the story line. I highly recommend this novel it a fantastic retelling.
Sarah you are amazing!!! This book was a great read! I literally read it every min I had, which wasn't much, but I tried. You fall in love with the characters and the story plot. Exceptionally well written and I enjoyed the heck out of this book!! Cheers to you Sarah!
Definitely different than anything I have ever read. The author has some mad writing skills as well. If you like spin versions of the original fairy tales then this is the book for you.
The first I heard about locks was from this teaser right here.
I said, "Holy Chiz! No she is NOT!" Immediately I shared this teaser, searched it out on goodreads, found out I had just liked and won a different book by Sarah Pepper on facebook and that she was gonna be one of the authors at Penned Con in Sept! Holy hell peeps, you have no idea how excited I got! When Sarah posted about being a beta reader, I would've groveled at her feet to get my hands on this book. I'm extremely glad I was part of the beta group chosen :)
I knew from page one that this book was gonna be AMAZING! I'm never wrong about these things ;) You guys know what I'm talking about. You crack open that book you've been waiting to get your hands on, and in the first couple of pages, hell the first couple of sentences, it completely surpasses all expectations you had set for it. Well Locks surpassed them in the first few sentences and continued to surpass them through the rest of the book. It knocked me on my ass from the get go and I couldn't put this book down if I wanted to and would've knocked out a mofo had they try and force me to do it.
Locks starts out with the fairytale version so to speak to get you into the fairy tale aspect of the story. You know the pretty wording with beautiful scroll...then bam! You are thrown straight into an alleyway where Rapunzel is faced with a smoking hot hitman with a hard-on for her after she has escaped from her prison tower. The sexual tension from the get go is enough to make grab a fan and a smoke. Holy hell, did I say hot, cause it's hot.
"Confession time: it wasn’t an everyday occurrence that I wound up face to face with the hottest killer in the history of the Badass Archives....Nonetheless, he didn’t pull the trigger when he had a crystal clear shot. Instead, he licked his lips as his gaze drifted momentarily to my knee-high stockings. It was reason número uno why I figured that he wanted to make-out rather than commit my homicide."
Of course, you think he won't shoot her since it seems he has the hots for her....and boy was I wrong. Not only did he shoot her, it's almost like he used her for target practice, but he knew her secret. She can heal any kind of bodily harm, besides a shot to the head, as long as her hair is long. It's her magic. Oooooh yes, I said magic! From here he takes her back to her tower to be trapped once again by Taryn, The Master of Time, a sorceress so powerful no one could defeat her. Taryn keeps her trapped in the tower to siphon her magic so that she never grows old and never dies.
This is where the mysteries begin. Who is Taryn, where did she come from, and how in the hell can she be defeated? Flynn, the smoking hot hitman, works for Taryn and has signed a contract with her stating that he can't try to kill her and has to tell her everything he hears. He talks in weird circles, hides things, and does things behind Rapunzel's back. There is a group of people called the Iconoclasts who are working together to try to bring down Taryn, and they thing Rapunzel is the key. She doesn't think she is and doesn't understand everything going on because so much happens behind her back. Through all of this, Flynn and her grow closer, at least you think they are, until he spills secrets to Taryn. There are so many twists and turns to this story that by the time one of the mysteries are revealed you are smacked in the face with another one. You don't know if Flynn is in it for himself because of things that are revealed or whose side he is on. At times you want to grab him and make out with him, and others you want to kick his ass to the moon and back. Poor Rapunzel has to endure so many beatings, her hair being scalped so she remains weak, and dealing with asshole Flynn who is also the love of her life. When you get to the last quarter of the book your head is spinning with so much information you are about to go into meltdown mode screaming I can't take it anymore! Just give me the answers!!!!!
This book is one of the best books I have EVER read. Sarah Pepper has a way with words. She is able to form her mad thoughts into the most beautiful sentences. She can tell a complex story in ways that would make Neil Gaiman bow to her feet. I could honestly say that Rapunzel has never looked so strong, determined, and as kickass as I have read in this story. If anyone every asks me, "Have you read Rapunzel?" I will answer with, "Obviously you haven't. Because if you had you would've asked me holy shit have you read the real story of Rapunzel?!" The many different facets of her character are awe inspiring. Everyone has their own fave fairytale gal, mine is now Rapunzel. Thank you Sarah for freeing Rapunzel from her Disney prison and making her REAL!
Bottom line, buy this book. It is phenomenal. I can't even write a review that will do this book justice. Buy it, read it, suck it down, and shout from the roof tops about it because this book is deserving of a cult fan base <3
We've all read fairy tales. Yes, even the burly men who act like they don't enjoy it when their child watches Frozen or Little Mermaid, has a soft spot for those cute childhood stories.
What happened to the fairy tales when we become adults? Surely, after seeing the world for what it is, having letdowns, breakups and bad days, we are the ones who could really use a moment to have that fuzzy, warm feeling and a small hope that there is a fantasy world out there?
Enter Sarah J. Pepper.
A brilliant author who knows there is a need for a 'fairy tale' with a little adrenaline, heat and cursing thrown into it. Something real...
Rapunzel:
Long locks, from which someone can climb a tower: Check
Trapped in a tall tower: Check
Held captive by and evil woman: Check
Fell for the first man who successfully came to get her: Check
Her love was a knight in shining armour: uh-oh
Rapunzel knew she had to escape, even if it meant dying. She wasn't going to go back to that tower. She knew that people would be sent for her. She also knew her captor wasn't one for fussing over how her collection got back to her, just that no one else had them.
However, Rapunzel didn't expect such a tall, dark and handsome to come for her, nor did she expect him to shoot her so many times. Either way, she back in the tower and as desperate as ever to get free. At least now she has someone to drool over.
As Rapunzel fights for her life and chance to get away, she starts to learn that sometimes the ones you believe you can trust, turn out to be the only ones you can't, and those you thought a write-off may just be your champions.
My Thoughts
Pepper has given us everything we could want in an adult fairy tale. We have a plethora of love, hate, jealousy, turmoil and passion. Don't forget the curse words and snarking remarks.
With each page, you are drawn further into this excellent story. You find yourself comparing the story of Rapunzel, you heard as a child, to this brilliant adaptation. There are the perfect amount of snippets and details that match up to your childhood tale, to keep you feeling as though you really are hearing Rapunzel's true story. However, there are also just enough changes to really keep you guessing, and give you those juicy moments you can't wait to gobble up.
I found the book highly addicting. I loved Punzie's attitude and fervour for freedom, as it really gave her an adventurous and strong personality. However, she still had the overwhelming hopelessness that one would expect to see from Punzie. She has been trapped in a tower, subjected to humiliation and treated as a possession for her entire life. I felt this made her exceptionally more real, unlike her counterpart from the recent Disney film, who seemed bubbly, happy and oblivious to the fact that she was truly be held prisoner.
I also loved that, just like a lot of people in their younger years, looking for someone to love, she has fallen for the bad boy. He may be more than he seems, but he did shoot her numerous times when they first met. Yet, she still falls for him, just like we've seen in so many real life scenarios (minus the shooting, i hope).
The details and attention to character continuity were done exceptionally well, meaning that you really could just dive in and enjoy the book, from cover to cover, as the characters always stayed true to the personalities they were given.
The pace was also done very well. It was fast-paced enough to have the adrenaline-filled action we want and still has time for the mushy lovey moments we need.
OVERALL: I was impressed with this book. I hadn't read any previous adult-version fairy tales, but this books was one I couldn't put down. I liked it so much, I can't wait to read another of Pepper's works and hopefully grab a few more of these adults recreations. I would highly recommend this book to any adults looking for escape from the norm, a little fun and saucy reading, as well a bit of adventure.
“My friends will die. Your friends will die. Many will die,” In a faint whisper he said, “But, I will join you because you cannot ask me to fight. So fight I must.”
Rapunzel, ‘Zel’, has escaped from her tower, and is trying to put as much distance from it as possible behind her! Unfortunately, The Mistress of Time, who has imprisoned her for as long as she can remember, has sent The Mercenary after her.
Flynn catches Zel in an alley, and almost kills her. Thanks to her ability to regenerate, Zel finds herself back in her tower when she returns to consciousness – this time, chained to her bed.
Zel just wants her freedom from Taryn. She can’t understand why The Mistress of Time would keep her around when she clearly has zero interest in being there. Then Zel find out, highly to her dismay, that she is the inspiration for a rebellion to take down Taryn. Taryn insists Zel bow down to her and swear fealty, but being the insolent ‘child’ she is, Zel won’t. As a result, Taryn punishes her friends. Taryn like to collect people; people with magical abilities. But what possible reason would she keep Zel for? And The Mercenary, Flynn… What did Taryn have on him? Everyone in Taryn’s ‘collection’ bears a tattoo marking them as ‘hers’. That way, should anyone manage to escape, it is never for long.
Flynn is drawn to Zel, but due to the power over him he must report everything they discuss to Taryn. He introduces her to those who will help her…sort of. The more Zel disobeys Taryn, the harsher the punishments, to a point where Taryn shaves her head; thus rendering her unable to regenerate.
Through all of her ups and down of finding out the rest of her family is not dead to losing important people to Taryn’s punishments for being involved with the rebellion, Zel is at her wits end.
Unlike several other dystopian novels I have read lately, definitely holds its own very well! Being set in what we know as a fairy tale world, it allowed the author to use the full range of her imagination. It’s the story of Rapunzel with tastes of Once Upon A Time and The Hunger Games meets The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo series. The girl just wants to be herself, to be free, and for her friends to be safe. Living under the iron thumb of anyone would try the sanest person. I don’t know about you, but when someone tells me ‘you can’t’, my first reaction is ‘why not?’ followed quickly by ‘watch me’. I saw this same outlook on things in Zel and was able to connect with her easily. Zel isn’t ready to lead anyone in anything (except how to annoy Taryn), and she knows it. She fully admits it! But it doesn't keep her from saying ‘there has to be a way’.
I found it extremely hard to put down, being such an independent and strong-willed person myself (Hey, I’m a redhead. What can I say!) One of my favorite things about Sarah’s books is being able to be surprised constantly. I often have to say ‘book’ when I audibly gasp and my husband jumps up and says ‘What?!?” and tries to figure out what’s wrong. He can always tell when I’m reading a book by one of two particular authors from my reactions, and Sarah is one of them. It took me a while to warm up to Flynn, and I’m pretty sure it was supposed to. There was so much depth to him, and in the end everything was understood. I don’t know if they live ‘happily ever after’, but things sure looked like they were off to a great start!
When I first saw this cover, I really wanted to read it! Rapunzel looked so bad-ass up in her tower with the tattoos covering her forearms and the locks around her wrist--not to mention, the hair looks pretty awesome as well! I love fairy tales and what is better for me is that the author specializes in twisted fairy tales. So, this book begins with Rapunzel being chased down by an assassin that was sent by an evil sorceress to bring her back to her high tower. She had previously escaped and was attempting to find a good hiding place among the mundane population outside of the sorceress's realm. The assassin, Flynn and his so-called maniac girlfriend, Kinsley are out for blood and they will not hesitate to kill her if things start to go badly. With ten rounds fired into Rapunzel's body from the assassin's gun, she can only fall to the ground and start the healing processes so that she doesn't die from blood loss. When she wakes up, she is back in that hell hole of a tower with Taryn, the sorceress who has kept her prisoner for her own personal gain. Why, she has no clue but she does know one thing. She has tasted freedom and she will see to it that Taryn does not hold her forever...she will know freedom again even if it kills her. The best characters in this novel are Rapunzel and Flynn, in my opinion. I also really loved the portrayal of Prometheus in this story as well. Since the beginning, Rapunzel was honest, brave, sophisticated and not afraid of violence. Her tact and personality are so enigmatic that I couldn't help being drawn to her character. She was fun to read about because her entire persona was that of an innocent girl looking for her freedom in all of the wrong places. Her assassin, Flynn keeps telling her that she is not too smart since he could always find her or the fact that she couldn't figure out why Taryn was in much need of her imprisonment. His demeanor is always a mystery up until the very end of the book, which is stunning!! The author allows the reader to have their own perception of the characters in question as far as what side they are truly on until the finality. I was happy to know that I guessed right, but there were a few times that I thought maybe I was wrong and the author would throw out another plot twist. Prometheus seems to be very powerful; yet, he too has become a part of Taryn's vast collection. All other characters were fascinating and brought many variations of perceptions and depth to the story; however, these three were my favorite. Overall, I loved this story and congratulate the author on such a well-rounded twisted version of Rapunzel. I recommend this one to anyone who enjoys Fantasy and Paranormal genres. I also rate Locks: Rapunzel Unhinged with five stars since I found it extremely difficult to put it down once I started. The originality and creativity of the novel are astounding and the darkness that surrounds every character is so enticing! The pace was fast, but I really enjoy fast-paced reads since they keep the story flowing. I was able to envision almost every scene and both Rapunzel and Flynn's appearances were in my head with clear and preformed images based solely on description alone. The author's words are so powerful and the passion that is conveyed in her novels continue to amaze me. I absolutely can't wait until her fourth Twisted Fairy Tale Confessions book is released so that I can read it up!!
This book has been one of my most anticipated releases of 2014 and you always run the risk of a book falling flat when you put too many expectations on it but after months of waiting, when I finally read Locks, it was everything I hoped it would be.
Locks: Rapunzel Unhinged is your dark and twisted take on the original story of Rapunzel and although it sticks with some of the main themes of the story, don’t let it fool you for this version definitely isn’t for kids! Rapunzel is trapped in her tower by Taryn – the most powerful sorceress of all time. She’s takes the powers of others ultimately making her unbeatable. However, she has one weakness - Rapunzel. After a meagre failed attempt at escaping from the Spire, Rapunzel gets caught by the Mercenary also known as Flynn although things start to heat up when she finds out that Flynn has a hidden agenda of his own and those that she knew may not be who she thought they were. In an action packed story of secrecy, passion and finding out who you really are, will Rapunzel ever get her happy ending?
The thing you must know is that Rapunzel, or ‘Zel’ is not your typical damsel in distress – far from it. She is a complete badass. Anything you thought you knew about fairy-tales throw that right out of the window because Zel completely challenges your perception of what a fairy-tale princess should be like. Written in her POV, it’s easy to capture the essence of her character – what she’s like and why she’s like it and although she is the epitome of different, she craved a simple life which indicates that she still has some innocence about her. Flynn is hot, hot, hot! He is so dominant, controlling and powerful whenever he was in the scene I fell weak at the knees. He says what he thinks and doesn’t sugar coat anything and some of his flirtatious one liners are enough to have you jumping in a cold shower. Well done Sarah for taking sexual tension to a whole new level.
Sarah’s writing is so different from anything else I’ve read – she draws you in straight away and leaves you hanging on every last word. It was just, effortlessly fantastic. The scenes flow into one another that you’re not even aware of a change of setting. So much research and planning must have gone into the settings and scenes of this book because every aspect and element of the story had a place and a purpose and you can see it as clear as day in your mind. In the mere 3 days in which I was reading, I lived and breathed this story. I didn’t want to put it down and didn’t want to let the characters go – especially Zel who was beginning to feel more like a friend that a fictional character! She teaches you that being perfect isn’t all it’s cracked up to be and being different and standing up for yourself is what really matters. Although very much it’s own, unique story, I loved the similarities between this and the original story of Rapunzel. It was almost like there was still some sort of innocence to it, even thought it was far from your classic fairy-tale.
I wasn't sure what to expect when I started this book but I was intrigued by the fairytale aspect. I have a thing for fairytales and I don't really care if they're way off from the original, as long as they're good. This version of Rapunzel blew me away. It was so on target as far as the original Rapunzel we all know but, at the same time, so different, in so many ways. It's as though the original author glossed over all of the details and just told all of the major plot points, leaving out all of the darker, more intimate facts.
In, Locks, Rapunzel has been locked in her tower since she was a young girl. Her hair is a source of healing, just like in the original, and the woman who's locked her away, uses her power to stay young. The difference here, is that the woman, who is an evil queen named, Taryn, punishes Rapunzel for not being loyal to her by severely abusing her. Broken bones, major internal injuries, head trauma; all life-threatening in normal people but, in Rapunzel, she suffers the pain but is able to heal herself. She spends a lot of her time plotting her escape and, when she manages to get out of the tower, is tracked down by a hired mercenary, Flynn.
Flynn isn't anyone's idea of Prince Charming, in fact, he shoots Rapunzel the first time he meets her. She can heal herself, so he's not worried about her dying but he knows that she still suffers the pain. As we get into the story, we find out that Flynn is a major player in a planned rebellion. He, as well as the other rebel leaders, believe that Rapunzel will be the one to lead them to freedom but, involved in a magical contract with Taryn, he can't help her, he can only teach her to defend herself.
Rapunzel doesn't think she's that strong but finds out that she is a lot tougher than she thought. Using all the things she learns from Flynn, and the other rebels, she tries everything in her power to get away from Taryn. Unfortunately, Taryn cuts off all of Rapunzel's hair in an attempt to control her. She also uses magical tattoos as a way to control her disloyal subjects, trying to squash the rebellion. All of her captives, including Rapunzel, have tattoos that allow her to use their power as her own. I thought this was a really unique concept and, of course, it makes the hero, Flynn, who's covered in them, that much hotter. Most of his tattoos, though, are 'reversed' to protect him from others' magic and, when Rapunzel learns about this, she has her entire body tattooed. She finally accepts that she has to do her part to free everyone from the evil Taryn and officially joins the rebellion.
With punk rocker, short hair, tattoos covering every inch of her, and bad-ass clothes, this Rapunzel is no Disney princess. A very unique re-telling of Rapunzel that'll keep you enthralled until the last page.
I reveiced this book in exchange for an honest review.(Lovers of Paranormal)
As you might have guessed Locks is a retelling of the popular story Rapunzel. I have to admit I remained skeptic throughout the whole story. First thing is The Mercenary's name: Flynn. Where did we hear that name before? It's used in Disney's "Tangled" and at first the stories seemed kind of similar. In addition Flynn's real name is never revealed. At least I guess he has a real name, since Rapunzel thinks something like "That can't be his real name.". So what's his real name? I'm dying to know :( (Maybe it was mentioned somewhere, but apparantly it's not important for the story) So far we have a more mature version of Disney's "Tangled" here, but in my opinion Locks totally lost on the romance level. Rapunzel meets Flynn in not so good -or let's say almost deadly- circumstances and all she can think about is how good looking and sexy he is. Really? The whole story kind of lost in the erotic department. I hate books, where it's always just about people making out, but here it's the exact opposite: people always talk and think about attraction, but there are no actions showing it. There is only one sex scene in the whole book, if you like to describe like 2-3 sentences as a scene lol, and the girl who is always repeating how hot someone is, is latest halfway through the book annoying. That actually brings me to the main character: In my opinion she is the stupidest and dumbest girl I ever read about. A lot of stuff was plainly obvious, she just kind of failed to recognize it. Maybe because she was always way too busy oogling guys *eyeroll*.
The last third of the book was pretty good though. I don't want to spoiler here, so I won't say more about it. But Locks is probably not as bad as I'm making it sound right now lol.
Overall I have to say the target audience was chosen wrongly. I really loved the outline story, but I think the author tries way too hard to make Locks (New) Adult/Romance. If you can't properly create attraction and/or write eroctic scenes, you might want to refrain yourself from using them. Maybe this story would have been better, if it had it's emphasis on something else but romance like the cruelty of the whole situation. A good example would be historic novels, that don't have romance in it. So at least in my opinion this story wasted a lot of potential. :(
Side notes: - I loved the german references! :) - Since when is Rapunzel poisonous? I looked it up on wikipedia, but only found eatable stuff.. - Rapunzel's sister is totally crazy! lol
I was lucky enough to be chosen by Sarah J Pepper as one of the Beta readers for Locks and even in its early stages I was blown away by the story! So much so that I emailed the author while reading to tell her how the book had me laughing, crying and stamping my feet, all in equal measure! Locks is a revised version of Rapunzel, but unlike other fractured fairytales I have read (my favourite genre!), Sarah J Pepper has retained the fantastical setting, rather than moving the characters to a contemporary world. This is a clever idea and only serves to enhance the plot. The relationship between Zel and Flynn is a volatile one, mainly because they antagonize each other to ignore the attraction they feel. The conversations between them range from funny to sweet to angry, and the reader never feels that a romance is inevitable. Yet singularly they are both awesome characters; Rapunzel is feisty, witty and tough but still sensitive with a huge likeability factor. Flynn, on the other hand, is handsome, courageous, playful and talks in constant innuendos! The chapters of Locks are irregularly interspersed with 'storyteller' sections, which appear to be taken straight from the more traditional Rapunzel fairytale. Although the Storyteller interrupts Sarah J Pepper's narrative, I feel as though it gives Locks more credence. The title of this novel is interesting and relates to many elements of the story. For example, Zel wears literal locks on her wrists which Taryn uses to keep her imprisoned in the tower, but Flynn is locked into his Mercenary contract with Taryn, forcing him to be loyal and meaning that he is unable to kill her. The word 'locks' also refers to Rapunzel's hair, which is the source of her healing power, the means she uses to escape and one of Taryn's greatest torture devices; the scene in which she shaves Zel's hair is perhaps one of the most emotionally powerful in the whole story. Although the reader thinks they might know the story of Rapunzel- I had a very well read Ladybird copy- Sarah J Pepper fills her version with more action, romance, sexual chemistry and suspicion. Locks is already one of my favourite books of 2014 and I cannot wait to read more by Sarah J Peper, who has already secured her place as one of the authors I must have on my bookshelf.

So here's the thing I love the film Tangled, like really love it, I can quite happily watch it without my kids and Flynn Ryder well I almost wish he was a real man! I was interested to see what this book would be like taking the Disney Rapunzel in my head and turning her in to a kick ass tattooed taking no prisoners type of dame!
It really is amazing, Sarah does a wonderful job of transforming Rapunzel or Zel as she is called in this from a helpless character and in to one you do not want to meet down a dark alleyway, she still has the hair I am glad to say but she has many other tricks up her sleeves.
She is trying to escape her tower, from the evil Taryn who is holding her captive, at the start of the book she escapes but is gunned down and capture by a mercernary - Flynn, a drod dead gorgeous mercernary.
Now I am not one for spoilers but this book plays out brilliantly with the love/hate relationship between Flynn and Zel, they have the attraction but is Flynn on Rapunzel's side? Obviously we are all shouting for them to get together but the question is will Rapunzel get her fairy tale ending or will she continue to be locked in her tower?
A great take on the Rapunzel tale and it keeps you wanting more as the story continues, if you like your heroines sweet and submissive then this is not for you but if you like your heroines strong and feisty then you will love this, I did and I'm awarding it 4 out of 5
Wow freaking Wow! Sarah has done it again! she blows us out of the water with her newest book locks. I have to say this book was freaking fantastic! I love Sarah's creativity and imagination, no one does it quite like her! This book would make a fantastic movie!
I never knew which way to turn or who was what in this one in true Sarah style as Rapunzel trys to navigate her twisted and confusing life. The ever sexy and edible Flynn who is never on her side but at the same time protecting her confuses the hell out of her and her lustful feelings for him make it even harder.
I kept trying to figure out throughout the book who was double crossing who and what the out come was going to be and in the end I was totally shocked! The ending was totally not what I expected and the bad guys not who I thought they were going to be...lol...Sarah did a wonderful job as always in her confusing and brilliant way of keeping us all on our toes.
The villain Taryn is bloody brilliant! not in many books have I ever come across such a diabolical and self serving villain, not only was she evil and loathsome with a heart born of cruelty but her poisonous personality leaked into others.
I have told Sarah time and time again how much I love the beautiful and twisted inner workings of her brain and this book is a shinning example of how brilliant it is...lol...keep up the amazing work Sarah! I can't wait for the next incredible ride!
Locks is a retelling of the story of Rapunzel. However, this story is anything but tame. It is jacked up with darkness, magic, betrayal, and love. This is definitely not a Disney movie!
Rapunzel (Zel) is locked away in the Spire tower by the Master of Time sorceress, Taryn. Only when Tayrn needs a hit of Zel's healing magic does she visit her. She is tired of being locked up, so she escapes the tower, only to be caught by the Mercenary, also known as Flynn. Flynn works for Taryn, or so it seems on the surface, so back to the tower Rapunzel goes.
She is once again locked away and chained in her tower, but unknowingly becomes the face and voice of a rebellion. Rapunzel is defiant. She is does not willingly give the Master what's she wants and fights her every step of the way. Flynn teaches her how to fight and think in sticky situations. You see, he is also part of the rebellion. He wants Taryn dead, but works for her so he can get her trust and inside information. Rapunzel isn't the only person with a special power that Taryn has enslaved, tortured, and used, there are hundreds more.
If you are looking for something a little different, I highly recommend that you pick up a book by Sarah J. Pepper. Her writing is so clever, and she has a knack for taking well known characters and making them her own. They are witty, charming, a bit off center, and very original. She is truly a talented author.
LOCKS: Rapunzel Unhinged. I'd say! This girl is no sweet damsel in distress waiting for prince charming to climb up the tower and save her. No, she is one badass broad who is going to save herself. And as much as she doesn't believe she can save anyone but, she finds out soon enough that she isn't only working to free herself, but an entire group of people who are under the queen's rule.
One thing I absolutely love about this book is that there wasn't a gigantic struggle of passionate love between her and the main male character. I cannot put into words how much I love Sarah J. Pepper's Fate Trilogy - (Ahem, still waiting on book 3!) - the first book in that trilogy sucked me in with that type of romance, and it was pulled off beautifully - BUT, those things can get tiring time and time again - so It was a great relief to read Locks and find that while there is some denial in feelings between the two, it's done uniquely and there seems to be more lust than love, though that is present later on as well.
As for the ending, well, as usual, I wasn't disappointed. It's a fairy-tale ending: so we get "happily ever after," right? Wrong. It's more like "pretty happy ever after" Nothing is perfect in real life, and nothing is perfect in hers.
I want to thank the author Sarah J. Pepper for offering this book to book group Lovers of Paranormal for the R2R. I was lucky enough to get this book to read for an honest review. I really did enjoy this book. It took a couple chapters to really get into but I have to say that it was written really well. The story line is a total use of the Rapunzel storybook story with a new modern twist. If your not into sorcery or stay away from it as a reader. This book is not for you. I totally enjoyed the characters and how you learned more and more about each one. Flynn and "Zel" were so well written that I was really bummed to have the story end. Sorry I'm not a reviewer that goes over the whole book and writes a lot of spoilers. But the way Flynn and Rapunzel meet is quite interesting. I also love the twists and turns that are taken to make this book different than the original story!! Have to say I just saw movie "Maleficent" and this would be something to compare in modern times. Very interesting how the author takes her own spin on the story. Thank you again for the privilege of reading this book!!
Where to start with this one! This isn't your ordinary fairy tale! Then again, with Sarah, they never are! She is genius when it comes to taking the traditional fairy tale we all know and twisting it into something completely new!
I am not going to go into the plot of the story too much. Reason being, I think you need to find out for yourself just how brilliant this book is!
Rapunzel, looking for Prince Charming? I think not. Rapunzel, looking to escape her life. Yes indeed. We also have Flynn. I couldn't quite get a read on him. Is he her friend or foe? Does he want her; doesn't he want her.
I found myself wanting to punch someone in the throat so many times throughout this book! Back and forth. Kind of like the old verse, he loves me, he loves me not.
Between the great imagination of Sarah, the characters who speak to you and the ever-twisting plot, this book is definitely a good read. Even if fantasy and paranormal books aren't your thing, you will still love this story. I promise!
*I received a copy of this book from the author in exchange for an honest review.*
4.5 Stars for Locks
Locks by Sarah J Pepper tells the story of Rapunzel, a young woman who is trapped in a tower by an evil queen for her beautiful hair. This is where the story of Rapunzel begins to change. Rapunzel was sold to the powerful sorcerous Taryn by her parents and trapped in a tower for her continued defiance of Taryn. She refuses to be cowed or used and is punished for her disobedience. Until one day, she finally flees. She doesn’t get very far as the very sexy and dangerous mercenary named Flynn comes after her and takes her back. No matter how many times Rapunzel is broken, her strength and determination to keep fighting makes her a great heroine. She’s defiant, spunky and sassy. Flynn is dark, mysterious, and deadly. These two butt heads and continuously and it is fun to read. The twists and turns in this book kept me glued to the pages. Loved Locks and I can’t wait to read more books by this author.
