Trisha's Table: My Feel-Good Favorites for a Balanced Life: A Cookbook

Rate this book
NEW YORK TIMES BESTSELLER

The country music superstar, Food Network standout, and bestselling author shows how delicious and wholesome dishes are part of a balanced lifestyle.

Trisha Yearwood is as much a force in the kitchen as she is on stage. But after years of enjoying decadent Southern comfort food, her culinary philosophy is evolving. As Trisha says, “I have adopted an 80/20 rule: 80 percent of the time I make good choices; 20 percent of the time I let myself splurge a little.”

Whether surprisingly virtuous or just a little bit sinful, the recipes in Trisha’s Table all bring that unmistakable authenticity you’ve come to love from Trisha. You’ll find brand-new dishes emblematic of the variety and balance Trisha champions. They skimp on anything but flavor, including dairy-free Angel Hair Pasta with Avocado Pesto, low-calorie Billie’s Houdini Chicken Salad, vegetarian Smashed Sweet Pea Burgers, and tasty, high-protein Edamame Parmesan, alongside too-good-to-give-up family favorites, such as Slow Cooker Georgia Pulled-Pork Barbecue, Chicken Tortilla Casserole, Snappy Pear-Cranberry Crumble, and Chocolate Chip Cookie Dough Balls.

Trisha wants to feed her loved ones—and yours, too—food that tastes good and food that’s good for you . So pull up a seat at Trisha’s Table and dig in!

Patricia Lynn Yearwood, professionally known as Trisha Yearwood, is an American country music artist. She is best known for her ballads about vulnerable young women[1] from a female perspective that have been described by some music critics as "strong" and "confident."

Trisha Yearwood signed with MCA Records in 1990. She came to prominence with her debut single, "She's in Love with the Boy" which became a #1 hit on the Hot Country Singles & Tracks chart in 1991. Her second album release, Hearts in Armor (1992) reflected Yearwood's own personal issues, which won her widespread critical acclaim among music critics and further success in country music. Her later album releases such as The Song Remembers When (1993), Thinkin' About You (1995) and Everybody Knows (1996) also demonstrated her creative control, featuring collaborations from Rodney Crowell, Willie Nelson and Garth Brooks.

Yearwood also found major success in country radio during much of the 1990s, including with the 1997 song "How Do I Live." Initially released on the soundtrack of the film, Con Air, the song was also issued on her "greatest hits" compilation entitled (Songbook) A Collection of Hits (1997) and would eventually win Best Female Country Vocal Performance from the Grammy Awards. In addition she would also win accolades from the Academy of Country Music and Country Music Association Awards in 1997 and 1998. Aside from her success in country music, she has also donated her time as a philanthropist, working with Habitat for Humanity and the Make a Wish Foundation. In addition she also set aside a project to release her first cookbook in April 2008 titled Georgia Cooking in an Oklahoma Kitchen, which consisted of southern cooking recipes from Yearwood, her mother and sister.

I have Trisha Yearwood's other cookbooks and I think I much prefer them to this one. It states that this is a lower calorie way to explore the mantra of 80/20, which means you eat healthy 80% of the time and splurge some the other 20%.
I'm not seeing that.

I'd eat the dang cheesecake in a heartbeat.
Not that the recipes are bad. Her recipes are always easily followed and the images throughout the cookbook are gorgeous. It just didn't seem to be what was advertised on the blurb for the book.
I'm definitely up to trying several of her recipes though.

Love the Trisha Yearwood cookbooks. This one balances some healthier options without sacrificing Southern flavor. A great addition to any cookbook collection. Good pictures and reminiscences accompanies the recipes.

I'm not a country music fan. But I do like a good cookbook. And trisha's table, featuring Trisha Yearwood who also happens to be married to Garth Brooks, is a wonderful mouth watering cookbook.
Southern comfort food at its best. Now I'm from the South and a southern cook is always looking for a great dish to serve her family and friends.
But what I like most about this cookbook are the low calorie, not.so.heavy on the mayo recipes. And the beautiful photos!
I made Billie's Houdini Chicken Salad not just because it's low calorie but because we love chicken salad. We eat chicken salad by itself, we eat on bread-to make a sandwich, we eat on a hoagie roll, we eat on Hawaiian bread....well, you get the idea we eat chicken salad!
This weekend I'm going to make the Chicken Tortilla Casserole. And I'd may add the Chocolate Chip Cookie Dough Balls, too. And I made the White Chocolate Cranberry Cookies...Oh!My!Word!!! they are SO Good!
There are sooooo many wonderful recipes to try.
As we all try to eat healthier and a little lighter I think this recipe book will help with those goals.
This hardback book also makes a GREAT gift!

So far, Trisha has delivered delicious and accessible recipes that I'll be trying again and again. In addition to the awesome food photos (which are a must in any good cookbook), she has included snapshots and brief anecdotes of her life with people who have introduced her to various recipes and whatnot as related to the book's contents. I like her ease with food, her Southerness (to which I can relate somewhat), and her clear handle on being an amateur chef along while displaying a level of confidence in doing what she loves—and doing it well.

Yummy! Four Stars! You always want great pictures in your cookbook and this book does not disappoint. The pictures of the recipes are great. The only drawback is that there is not a picture of each recipe. The recipes are easy to follow and the ingredients you can find at your local grocery store. I also liked the stories regarding each recipe, they bring home the Trisha Yearwood that we see on TV and have come to love. This cookbook would make a great gift for Trisha Yearwood fans and beginning cooks. In this cookbook, Trisha has “lightened” up some of the recipes, to showcase a healthier version. Awesome! Now the food….the CINNAMON ORANGE ROLLS are to DIE for, yummy, ooey, gooey goodness. WHITE CHOCOLATE CRANBERRY COOKIES and BANANA PUDDING CAKE…heaven here I come. The CHICKEN ENCHILADAS AND CHICKEN TORTILLA CASSEROLE were easy with the substitution of the cooked rotisserie chickens. This cookbook is packed with doable recipes. There are also recipes for foods that I would love to get my family to try but traditionally they won’t eat because they are “healthy” and thus do not taste good. So I plan to try the QUINOA CORN CHOWDER and the ZUCCHINI CAKES WITH HERBED SOUR CREAM. I am also excited to try the GRITS AND GREENS CASSEROLE. I wished the book contained the nutritional information on the recipes, this would have made it a 5 star for sure. Nonetheless, this is a good cookbook.
I received this book from Blogging for Books in exchange for my honest review.

The first thing I do when I get a new cookbook is to flip through it checking for pictures and to get an overall feel of the book. This delightful addition to Trisha Yearwood's offerings is bursting with color. The photos are mouthwatering, vivid, and plentiful. Reading the book and Yearwood's stories give you a cozy feeling, like sipping lemonade on a warm summer's day.

Down home stories and remembrances precede each recipe. Clearly Yearwood and I like the same food because, with the possible exception of the pickled okra and tofu anything, there was not one recipe that I didn't want to try. And who doesn't love a woman who places Cran-Apple Crisp among the breakfast offerings?

I did try many of the recipes, all with great results. This is comfort food, some of it light comfort food, at its best. Our particular favorites were Hummingbird Pancakes, Unfried Pickles, Cornbread Chili Casserole, Chicken Tortilla Casserole, and Spaghetti Casserole. Believe it or not, we are generally not a casserole eating family, but we enjoyed every one of these.

Recommended.

a good cookbook. Not as great as her first one. I ended up purchasing that one. This one I was able to grab two handfuls of recipes from that I will add to my collection.

None of these recipes are new or interesting. If you know Southern recipes or basic vegetarian recipes, you can do all this on your own without this book.

Trisha's Table: My Feel-Good Favorites for a Balanced Life had some good recipes, with an emphasis on eating more healthy. Ms. Yearwood also provided some cute stories behind the recipes, including information about her Mom, Dad, her husband, Garth Brooks, and her sister Beth.

This is my first Trisha Yearwood cookbook. I really enjoy her show on the Food Network so I was eager to check this out. Overall, this is a good cookbook, not great but quite good.

The book itself is constructed very well - the photos are fantastic as is the design. I do wish every recipe had a photo but most of them do in this cookbook. The quality is high on the production of this cookbook. It looks and feels great.

Although there were quite a few recipes that I liked, there were more that didn't appeal to me. I was hoping for something that I didn't find ... I liked that they are fairly simple and easy recipes. But, nothing really jumped out at me as I looked through it. I found it to be more basic in its approach so perhaps it's better for those who aren't as experienced in cooking.

But, I do think it's worth checking out if you're a Trisha fan and enjoy her style of food (from her show). It's not a bad cookbook but it just wasn't what I was hoping for.

This is a good cookbook! I like the stories she relates about her family. The photos of her grandmother, parents and sisters are great additions to the recipes and the story that accompanies them. The apple pie recipe is certainly on my list of things to make from this book.

There are healthy options for the traditional southern food such as oven fried chicken instead of frying in oil. Lots of tips and established recipes you will love. I also like the fact that the ingredients for recipes are not hard to find. A typical trip to the grocery store, nothing fancy, easy to make dishes. The short list of recipes I want to try soon are maple salmon, apple pie, the steak with the honey marinade………drool worthy chow here!

A nice tribute to her upbringing and the food that helped make memories. I would be proud to write a cookbook like this one.

We enjoyed the book. All recipes were delicious. But we did have some reasons on why the book did not get 5 stars from us. First this was not a weight loss or a weight control book. Second there were a lot of mistakes in the editing of this book. Some recipes were cooked to long while some were still raw in the time required. All recipes were a hit though they included the chicken enchiladas, cranberry apple crunch, cornbread chili casserole, mushroom risotto, no-bake peanut butter pretzel squares, and praline cheesecake bars. The Texas sheet cake with chocolate ganache was a hit as well but we were wondering if it was another editor mistake because our idea of sheet cake is that it is a chocolate cake with chocolate frosting and this wasn't. It was good but it wasn't our idea of a Texas sheet cake.

Trisha Yearwood is a country-western star and she has a cooking show. Now she has decided to share some of her Southern comfort food with others. In this book she shows how to follow her philosophy of making good choices 80 % of the time and splurging 20%.

This book is filled with her view of some wonderful recipes. Included is a Houdini Chicken Salad, Edamame Parmesan, Slow Cooker Georgia Pulled-Pork Barbecue, along with some tasty sweets like chocolate chip cookie dough balls.

For the down-home cook that enjoys eating well and cooking food that their family will enjoy, this is the book.

I was given this book by Blogging for Books in exchange for my honest review.

Fantastic cookbook!!!

I LOVE that Trisha balances healthy foods with the down-home delicious favorites we all enjoy. Her 80/20 approach to cooking and eating is very practical.

The recipes are not complicated and are all foods my family and I will enjoy.

(Dont you just hate those cookbooks that list a million ingredients most of which you havent even heard of!)

Im so glad I dont have to have any special skills with these easy to follow instructions.

The color photos are glorious. I love that Trisha shares her family with readers.

You wont want to miss this one…So pull up a chair to Trisha’s Table and enjoy!!!

I wish that some nutritional information was included. A few recipes looked great, most looked easy to make, but few jumped out at me as "must make" recipes. I like the candor from the author and how you can see that the traditional heavy recipes have been lightened up, but sometimes I just felt like the substitutions were simple, ideas I could have come up with on my own, such as ground turkey for ground beef.

Still, there are a few recipes I'm looking forward to trying, including the Honey Marinated Steaks, Broccoli Slaw Chicken, and the Butternut Penne.

Trisha's Table. Trisha Yearwood's newest cookbook.

I enjoy Trisha's cookbooks because they are filled with recipes that are just plain down home cooking! She has a way of making cooking easy. I am looking forward to trying many of the recipes in this cookbook.

Not as good as the first two. This one focuses more on healthier ingredients. As Trisha says, “I have adopted an 80/20 rule: 80 percent of the time I make good choices; 20 percent of the time I let myself splurge a little.” I usually go the opposite. Plus, Quinoa recipes ~ yuk!

I enjoyed reading the stories about each recipe. Trisha seems to be a down-to-earth and warm person with a good sense of humor. I tried the chickless pot pie recipe for a vegan potluck, and everyone loved it!

was not bowled over by this one (though to be honest, i only really love ina garten and rachael ray books from the fn empire). the pork, apricot, rosemary and garlic skewers, as well as the pound cake with apple, pear and plum compote, sound amazing though, so those might have to happen.

Feel good is right

I think this book is as good as her others - no, it's comforting, doable and lighter. Definitely a winner. The anecdotes are almost as good as the recipes.

WHile I like the show, most of her recipes seem basic at best. Nothing groundbreaking here, that's for sure, but some nice recipes that would round out anyone's repertoire.

A lot of these look good, but aren't the kind of thing that I cook.

I liked this book, didn't love it. Maybe I'll read it again when I'm in a more receptive mood.
