The Highlander's Bride Trouble is the fourth and last installment in her Sutherland series and I truly had a fun time with this book. Although its definitely Mary Wine....so of course there is no doubt that I would enjoy this book. I devour her writing style of the Scottish Highlands and she really does the culture and accents so very well. I do love seeing this book just come alive off the pages and was thrilled to find this at my library.
Our story begins with Nareen Grant, and has been on her own for some time. She was raised by her father and brother, but when her brother sent her to court under the guidance of their cousin Ruth, her life changed for the worse. And circumstances became so terrible that she was forced to leave and now works as a companion to a Scottish lady and her life she is content with until she runs into Saer MacLeod who is a very good friend of her brothers and the man that desires her and wants her as his wife but Nareen has no trust in men and has been betrayed by those she trusted the most and is doing just fine on her own and doesn't need any man in her life. But when desire explodes between Saer and Nareen, she can't deny what she is feeling for Saer even if she doesn't trust him fully but she does know that Saer is a good man but determined in getting what he wants.
The Highlander's Bride Trouble is a wonderful book that had me laughing and swooning and boy its been a while since I have read a hero like this one, its definitely a bit old school but I did love seeing how determined he is and getting the heroine to face up to the truth when she is in denial about their relationship through out most of the story. She is very stubborn so she definitely needs someone that will show her the truth even though she doesn't want to see it even if its staring at her in the face. She was a hoot though, and I had a blast with her character. She is feisty and strong and so capable, she was trained to defend herself and we see her strength in fighting and riding in this story and I am so happy that Wine showed that in the story and boy this book can kick ass at times.
We do have a wonderful setting in the medieval Highlands and I had a fun time seeing this and the BROGUE was sexy as all get out. There is something about reading a Highlander brogue that gets to me every single time and which is why Highlander romances are one of my greatest kryptonite. I really loved the traveling across the distances, the alpha male acts of carrying the heroine over his shoulder and the suspenseful ploys in the plot that get you to the edge of your seat. We see how wonderful these two characters are together and the sex scenes. Mary Wine really knows how to write her sexual chemistry and it was very well done in this book and boy does she show how sexy Highlanders can be.
Now I have one complaint about this story that I would have liked to see much more of....the heroine's back story. We don't really see in detail what happens to her with her brother sending her away to court or what happens with her cousin Ruth except in inner dialogue later in the book but I would have loved seeing a prologue of the set up because the first chapter you are bit confused especially if you have read the blurb because the way the blurb is written, it gives the sense that you will see all that unfold and you don't which was disappointing to be honest.
The romance between Nareen and Saer is packed with plenty of tension and boy these two really get into some intense arguments but I LOVED their bantering. They are both prideful and stubborn so it does take a while before they really calm down a bit and really settle into their relationship. But this is what is so gratifying about this story, is with all the angst that we see between them, once they figure out that they love each other and don't want to live without one another, then the tone of their relationship really tones down and we see such intimacy build between them and its truly beautiful. Overall a captivating and richly intoned story that gives you a satisfied feel!!

I've got to be honest... I might be crushing on the bad boy Laird McLeod but this book had the thinnest plot ever. A whole lot of sizzling "Calgon take me away" scenes with very little history to go with all that "I think she doth protest too much" romance. Barely three stars (but lots of kilt action so I can't deny its appeal!).

Nareen Grant has had enough of letting other people dictate her life. Sent away by her brother to her cousin who then attempted to find the highest bidder for her virtue, she is living on her own terms as a lady’s maid to a spoiled laird’s daughter. Determined to submit to no man, she is unprepared when she catches the eye of Saer MacLeod, and fights to resist her attraction to him.
A man considered savage by many, Saer is intrigued by Nareen’s spirit and fearlessness towards him. When she spurns his attentions despite her apparent attraction, Saer pursues Nareen and vows to do everything he can to make her his.
Review-
For me, this story continually vacillated between engaging and frustrating, which prevented me from giving it a higher review.
The storyline flowed well, and kept my interest throughout. Mary Wine consistently delivers a good balance of humor, depth, and romance into her Highland stories. I have read and enjoyed many of her books, and this one was no exception. Her characters are well-written with lots of depth, with a sufficient amount of chemistry and heat to keep the story lively.
On that note, I will delve into the good and bad characteristics of the hero and heroine. First, I appreciated Nareen’s strength and determination, interested in living life on her own terms. Her ability to stand up for herself and for those she loves is admirable. Moreover, Saer’s evolved thinking of wanting a women to stand beside him and share his life, not be submissive and subservient, was refreshing. I loved that he allowed Nareen to train the younger soldiers in knife fighting after seeing her skills. Overall, I thought they were a good fit for each other.
However, while both Nareen and Saer possessed many admirable qualities, their actions were so contradictory to their words that the story became infuriating at times. Nareen’s constant proclamations that she will never wed, never trust, never be owned by a man were understandable considering her past experiences. However, the mantra was repeated one too many times throughout the book and become repetitious and eye-rolling, especially in light of the fact that her words were usually accompanied by a romp in the bed with Saer, showing she obviously trusted him enough to sleep with him.
As for Saer, all his talk about wanting an equal willing partner did not stop him from contriving rather uncool ways to keep her with him. While he was quick to apologize and acknowledge his actions were not the wisest to gain her favor, his high-handedness was grating at times. Plus, his proclamation that he would never love her was surprising and out of the blue, given that up until that point his behavior towards her bordered on the obsessive side and he was doing all he can to convince her to marry him. Both Saer’s and Nareen’s stubbornness got in the way of the story at times and dragged it down a bit.
Lastly, I have one last peeve on a completely different note in that the reader never found out what happened with Abigail. Last she was heard of, Saer left her to be ransomed and then her father inexplicably declares vengeance on Saer, not on her abductor. Then, when vengeance is carried out, this subplot comes to rather an abrupt and unsettling end and does not really tie up any loose threads. Despite her unpleasantness, I would have liked to have known what Abigail’s ultimate fate was and the non-resolution stuck with me. Maybe Wine will address this in her next book, and give Abigail some much-needed character development. Until then, I cannot help but wonder.

Back to the Highlands! Mary Wine is fabulous! In Book 4 of her Sutherlands Series.. Mary tells the story of Nareen Grant and Sear MacLeod.. A story of family connections, and a clan rebuilding. And of one man who can't let one special woman escape his grasp.
Nareen Grant ran wild over her father's land but it seems she was just a little too wild. When danger lurked and she needed protecting her brother sent Nareen to live with an Aunt in the lowlands. To learn the womanly arts of keeping a home. Unfortunately that wasn't the womanly arts their despicable cousin had in mind. Instead of learning how to keep a home, Nareen was being groomed to upper scale prostitution. Managing to escape Nareen swears to never again trust a man and to learn to take care of herself. Instead of returning home, she becomes the companion of a spoiled brat. Who isn't that far off from her cousin in her morals. Things aren't perfect but Nareen is in control.. until Sear shows up and takes over.
Sear MacLeod was born the bastard son. He and his mother were forced off the Clan land because the Laird's wife couldn't tolerate them. Instead of being raised to serve the Laird, he struggled, barely able to take care of his mother. Until the Clan chose the wrong side and was basically decimated. Desperate for leadership, the Clan called Sear home. Now he is Laird of the Clan MacLeaod. A Clan that was decimated by war and must rebuild. For now the Clan is on solid ground beginning anew but Sear needs a wife and he can not forget the lovely Nareen Grant.. Sister of one of his allies..
Sear and Nareen are dynamic! Sear knows what he wants and knows he must gain Nareen's trust before she will ever accept him. Nareen knows in her heart that not all men are bad BUT she just can't make herself trust any of them, including her much loved brother. After all he sent her into hell, albeit unknowingly.
I am on something of a Highlander kick right now and often find books I just question. Not this one, Ms. Wine did an excellent job of weaving her story amidst Scottish History. With both fictional and historical characters sharing the page. In a country that was constantly destroying and rebuilding itself it is a treat to find an author who takes all that into consideration.

This was my first historical book by Mary Wine but it won't be my last. The author's writing style is fluid and engaging and just plain wonderful. She has a way with words that really makes you live in the moment. The characters in this book have depth and are interesting.
Saer MacLeod ranks as one of my all-time top five favorite leading male / hero. How can you not love an underdog who is respectful but demanding, gentle but a tough guy and possessive without being suffocating. Yum. Yum. Yum.
Nareen Grant was also an interesting heroine that I liked for the most part. However, I did struggle a little with trying to understand why she was putting up so much resistance to "submitting" to Saer and "trusting" him. Quite honestly there wasn't enough background about what happened to Nareen with her cousin / brother to make me understand where she was coming from. This was the daughter of a highlander lord, raised to know what her duty was to her family / clan, yet she was shirking that duty because she'd been stripped of her free will for a period of time. It was a little tiresome to listen to her say over and over against that she refused to submit and yet her actions showed her submitting over and over again. (Hence my reason for not giving 5 stars.)
That all being said, this was a beautiful love story with strong characters and well written. I can see myself picking it up again to read my favorite parts.

An enjoyable historical romance, The Highlander's Bride Trouble was a lovely book. I really liked this book and I enjoyed reading it.
Nareen was a good heroine. She was strong enough to survive what her greedy cousin put her through and was determined not to leave herself in a vulnerable position again. However, there were a few things about her that bothered me. 1) From her experience, she decided that all men were terrible. Kind of understandable, but it was a few months experience versus the years of good memories she had of the men in her life, particularly her brother, who never treated her less because of her gender (which made it even more annoying that she spent a while blaming him for her troubles, even though he truly didn't know the nature of their cousin). 2) She was often stubborn for the sake of stubbornness and argued for the sake of arguing, even if that meant lying about what she really thought and felt. And, 3) she did a lot of saying 'no' when she meant 'yes'. For example, when Saer was pressing the issue of marriage, Nareen was saying that she refused to get married. However, as soon as it seemed like her was bowing to her wishes, she would be upset and disappointed. Seriously? Why do you have to play those games?
Despite all this, I didn't dislike her. She wasn't my favorite heroine, but I was okay with her, overall.
Saer, on the other hand, was a delight. He was very sweet and loyal to his clan and determined to lead his clan into prosperity. I liked that, while he was intent on winning Nareen over and could be (annoyingly) highhanded, he always made it clear that it was her choice to be together and that he wouldn't force her into it. But, he also wouldn't take a false 'no' when her actions told a different tale than her words. Despite everything, he was really sweet and devoted to Nareen. I thought he was great and I really liked him.
The romance was good. My one issue with it was that, because of Nareen, it tended to go in circles and it wasn't until the last couple of chapters that she broke that cycle. However, when she wasn't being stubborn, I thought they were sweet together. They both understood each other implicitly and it made them a lovely couple. Not to mention the super hot chemistry between them. Tons of steaminess with these two. I thought they were a great couple.
The plot was well paced and I was kept interested the entire way through, thought there were some parts that dragged.. I enjoyed the story and the ending was lovely.

I have read all of Ms Wine's highlander books and I have enjoyed them. Some more than others - this one definitely falls into the "others" category.
I think my major issue with the book was the heroine, Nareen. I had a really hard time liking her. She was just so stubborn and inflexible - she had such a negative attitude and was a very "I know what I know - so don't confuse me with the facts" type of person she refused to even consider marriage to Saer, because she "knew" she couldn't trust any man or be an obedient wife and that even though he said he liked her the way she was and wouldn't try and change her - she "knew" he would come to resent her and hate her. I know she has been hurt and betrayed by others, but she realized how different Saer was and still decided that she was right in her thinking and no matter what he said, she just knew he would come to hate her. It was really annoying!
Saer was the saving grace in this book. He was dead set on taking Nareen as his wife and wasn't going to take no for an answer. He has worked hard to rebuild his clan and has proven himself as a good man - even though he is a "savage". He proved time and time again that he would not try and change Nareen and that he admired her spirit and her passion.
And so goes the story, they argue and then fall on each other. There were times during the love scenes that I was reminded of the Sam and Diane (from the tv show Cheers) first love scene - you know the "I hate you - kiss kiss-I hate you more-kiss kiss" scene. Saer and Nareen would fight and then have mind blowing sex. Don't get me wrong - I like mind blowing sex - but this just started to get old and boring after awhile.
Needless to say, by the 85% mark of this book Nareen's attitude has not changed and I was hoping that Saer would just let her go. Let her go back to her brother and live a miserable celibate life, secure in the knowledge that she was right. But what kind of romance story would that be? So of course we have a very dramatic life or death moment and she finally changes her mind and they get a HEA.
I am sure there is another book in the works - we don't know what happens with Bastian and Abigail. And Kael is still single. So while this book was not a keeper for me, I will read any highlander book that Mary Wine writes. She is a very talented author and writes amazing books. And while this book was not my favorite - I still enjoyed it and would recommend it.

There were times during the love scenes that I was reminded of the Sam and Diane (from the tv show Cheers) first love scene - you know the "I hate you - kiss kiss-I hate you more-kiss kiss" scene. Saer and Nareen would fight and then have mind blowing sex. Don't get me wrong - I like mind blowing sex - but this just started to get old and boring after awhile.
Needless to say, by the 85% mark of this book Nareen's attitude has not changed and I was hoping that Saer would just let her go. Let her go back to her brother and live a miserable celibate life, secure in the knowledge that she was right. But what kind of romance story would that be? So of course we have a very dramatic life or death moment and she finally changes her mind and they get a HEA.
I am sure there is another book in the works - we don't know what happens with Bastian and Abigail. And Kael is still single. So while this book was not a keeper for me, I will read any highlander book that Mary Wine writes. She is a very talented author and writes amazing books. And while this book was not my favorite - I still enjoyed it and would recommend it.

I must confess: I love this kind of book, this story(many times written and rewritten) doesn’t seem to bother me in the least. By cons, if the heroin uses ill will or is simply too naive, I will loose interest quickly. It’s not the case in this book and on the contrary Mary Wine is able to present us a strong and very spontaneous woman in the character of Nareen. Despite her troubled family past and their shenanigans, Nareen only wants to be free and make her own choice: which one to choose has her husband and maybe even stayed single.
Once Saer MacLeod laid eyes on the beautiful Nareen (in the previous book), he doesn’t want anyone else in his life and especially in bed. Nareen’s temper and refusal toward Saer only ignite his passion and see it as a challenge he can’t deny. Saer is the perfect representation of the wild Highlander who had a difficult childhood to do with the fact that he was bastard born. Now as a Laird, he inherited a wild side, but also a lot of compassion because he knows hunger, shame and poverty. Lots of action and sexy scenes are present in The Highlander’s Bride Trouble.
The end of this book arrives abruptly, my only complaint is that the book is really devoted to the conquest of Nareen by Saer. When the adventure ends, there is a stupid and kind of useless fight that seems to seal the fate of our two lovebirds. Of course, all ends well, happy ending. I think the author left an open ending, a back door exit to write the sequel and get everything coherent in the Sutherlands #5!
Overall, this title was a great read, I fell in love with Saer’s brutality and possessiveness and I felt a strong connection toward Nareen. The Sutherlands series is a must read if you love handsome Highlanders, heroines with spirit and of course Historical Romance!

This was a day read for me after being fully enthralled with this story line.
The book starts will two strong willed determined main characters Saer and Nareen. Both have seen hardship and struggles through out their lives and a shaped by their past. Saer is working hard to rebuild his decimated clan while Nareen is determined to live life under her own terms after being placed under a cruel woman's care and escaping her fate of being sold to the highest bidder.
Saer meets Nareen briefly at court and despite being denied sees something in Nareen that he knows he must have. Saer follows Nareen to the Ross castle where Nareen is acting companion to the Earl of Ross's daughter Abigail. Saer makes his intentions to have Narren to himself clear yet Nareen is adamant in her denial that she can be no man's wife and never life under anyone's rule again after the suffering she endured. Saer never gives up as the storyline follows Nareen and her falling defenses to allowing herself to love and spend her life with the man she has grown to love.
A betrayal leaves Saer on his death bed were Nareen complies to his dying wish to marry Saer ensuring any child that may be growing in Nareen's womb would not live the cruel life of a bastard as Saer had. Nareen grows to see the brilliant strong and compassionate man she has grown to love without the blinders of her past shading her judgement allowing them to both live happily together.

When Saer wants something that boy isn't afraid to go after it, "he did need the stone, and the sooner he had it, the sooner he might depart for MacLeod land. With Nareen. He refused to consider any other outcome. She would be his, if he had to use the savage side of his nature to haul her home." I was surprised by his self control when it came to his woman and her hands on him, "nae here," he growled, but she wasn't sure if he was telling her or himself. His breath was ragged, and his nostrils flared. He pointed one thick finger at her. "Nae here." I mean I was really impressed with his self control, "he finished and stood up silently, resisting the urge to wake her. His co** was standing firm when he removed his kilt and shirt, but he forced himself to slide into the bed without jostling Nareen." And he is such a giver and he reminds Nareen a lot, "I do indeed," he answered softly, enticingly. "When ye wrapped yer thighs around me hips and demanded satisfaction, I met yer demands well and truly. " I really loved this story, well I love any highlander story.

Mary Wine is simply amazing!
I loved Nareen as much as I loved Saer. Seriously there's nothing better than reading a novel and falling in love with both characters. And Mary Wine does that for me in every single one of her books. Though, I have to admit it's frustrating as hell when they are as stubborn as these two. Especially Nareen. Drove me insane with her trust issues, but I understood where she was coming from. Really enjoyed all the arguments and repartee between the two. It felt more like foreplay than any disagreement, which was sexy and hot, since every one of those arguments ended in them clashing with more than words... and tongues. And those love scenes ***shivers*** felt so real in my mind. Mega bookgasm!
I wonder if Nareen's brother Kael is next. Didn't really get much of an indication the next book would be about him. Well, doesn't matter, I'll be looking forward for her next book when it comes out.

Wow... I loved the synopsis but when I started reading this I thought it was going to be a simple and hopefully fun romance. What I got instead was a book filled with courage and fear, lust and love, and a whole lot of stubbornness!
I simply loved the characters. The plot was easy enough to discern but it was the way that everything happened that keeps this book apart from other romance. And the characters! They were lively and full of everything that any person would want to be full of. Some hard times happened to both of the main characters but they used the past to make them harder, both to their detriment and to their learning, but it just filled this book with a ton of fun stuff!

I did not like so much the first half of this book, because Nareen seemed schizophrenic, while Sear just can not listen to her, a classic case of a dialogue between deaf. Continuing though, she seemed to me a little less "too stupid to live" and somehow I grow to appreciate these two characters and a the good storyline.

This book had an incredibly underdeveloped and predictable plot, nothing truly interesting ever happened. I'm picky about my romance novels because I think it's very easy for them to become formulaic, it probably didn't help that I reread Highlander Most Wanted by Maya Banks immediately before reading this book, as that is one of the best romance novels I've ever read. I found both Saer and Nareen mildly irritating, although they did have good chemistry. I believe this book would have been far more interesting if Saer and Nareen teamed up to go after the cousin who attempted to sell her to the highest bidder, rather than letting the cousin's comeuppance happen prior to the events that occur in this book. In sum, good chemistry but boring story.

I really enjoyed the female protagonist, Nareen, she really stuck to her beliefs and did not give into the man desire for commitment, even after living with him. I also enjoyed that the hero, Saer, did not try and change they heroine, or temper her spirit, he encouraged it. I did feel the end was a bit abrupt as if there suddenly needed to be an ending. Overall, it did not effect my enjoyment of this book, which I did complete in 2 days thanks to Goodreads Giveaways!

Another great book by Mary Wine
I give this a rating of 4.5 stars and give it a HOT for the chemistry. I have loved all of Mary Wine's books. Nareen and Saer are both stubborn and lovable. Their love story is sweet and sensual. The sex is hot, hot, hot! I feel like I went through every emotion with the characters in this story. If you love sexy highlanders like I do, then you will love this story.

September 15, 2014I enjoyed this book. I love a true alpha male who is cocky and speaks his mind. However...for 95% of this book, you have to read about a heroine that refuses to trust her feelings but appears she really wants the hero to be her hero. All in all, it was worth the purchase.

This was ok. I gave it 3 stars instead of 2 because of the last third of the book. 2/3 was devoted to Nareen resisting(not really) Saer and the sex that they had. Saer seemed one dimensional until they got the castle/keep. He seemed to only serve as a conduit to Nareen's burgeoning sexuality. However, once they got to the castle and you saw how he treated his clan, how he cared for them and wanted everyone to prosper that the character deepened for me. I love a kick ass woman especially in the historicals because of how women were thought of and treated. So when Nareen used the skills her brother taught her to defend herself and saved Saer's life, She became more than just a whiny, moody character. She had strength and grew for me. Saer respected her more.
The scenes of Saer's injury/illness, near death, the rebuilding of the castle and Nareen's forgiveness of her brother were very moving.
Nareen grew to know who she was and stand in her place as Laird's wife. They were equally matched in my opinion.
It is for these reasons I give it 3 stars.

I liked how the female MC was all saucy and "I'll do what I want and I'm not a belonging to be owned and I can take care of myself." I don't like how the male MC was all, "Too bad, my macho will win." Like, I think he was trying to tell the female MC that she was right, but that doesn't mean he can't offer suggestions and marry her and help take care of her. But what came out of his mouth was generally something along the lines of "But I'm right and I'll prove it." Blech. Too much machismo for me. This was also a "lust = love" story, which is not an equation I support. I need the emotional connection and, "She couldn't explain why she felt drawn to him, but she did," is not an emotional connection. It's lust. And when the lust was active, I was mostly thinking, "Really? That's how that works? I don't knoooowww........" and occasionally, "Bull!" So I'm not likely to pursue further writing from this author. I might give her another chance if she come across my desk, but I won't be seeking her out.

It took me a while to get into but I enjoyed the second half of the book. I just felt like it was the same being being repeated over and over about how Nareen didn’t want to marry and Saer disagreeing
