Isabel Allende Llona is a Chilean-American novelist. Allende, who writes in the "magic realism" tradition, is considered one of the first successful women novelists in Latin America. She has written novels based in part on her own experiences, often focusing on the experiences of women, weaving myth and realism together. She has lectured and done extensive book tours and has taught literature at several US colleges. She currently resides in California with her husband. Allende adopted U.S. citizenship in 2003.

Isabel Allende has been my favorite author since I read House of the Spirits for the first time twenty years ago. I have read many of her other novels including Daughter of Fortune and Portrait in Sepia as well as Ines of My Soul. Just last month I devoured The Japanese Lover in a day. Yet, I have never welcomed myself into her life and read one of her nonfiction memoirs, limiting myself to her fiction.

The Sum of Our Days is the memoir Allende dictated to her late daughter Paula over the span of 13 years. Allende writes of the pain the family fell into following Paula's death and all of the trials and tribulations that come with being a matriarch of a large, extended clan. Usually author memoirs are of the writing process, and they are included here in passing, but this book read like a novel that only a master storyteller like Allende is capable of telling.

In this book we meet all the members of Allende's extended American family as well as some Chilean members. We intimately follow her relationship with her second husband Willie as well as that of her son Nico and his children. Yet despite the achievements that come with being a world renowned writer, all Allende's milestones flow back to Paula and the measure of time in reference to when her daughter passed away. Willie has allowed Allende to come out of the most dismal period of her life and the two venture into the least likely of relationships, resulting in marriage. Along the way we meet the cast of characters in Allende's life, each playing a distinct role enriching each other's days.

In spite of living her youth in a Catholic country, Allende does not view herself as Catholic, but a spiritualist. Willie has constructed for her an actual House of the Spirits on a hilltop overlooking San Francisco Bay. The extended clan lives in the same neighborhood and many memories occur at her abuela's actual table of the spirits imported from Chile. Allende uses the table along with astrological signs to predict all that has happened to her family during the period encompassed in this memoir, including births, deaths, and the subjects of her next books. As I had already read a number of Allende's novels, I found her system for choosing subject matter to be a fascinating endeavor.

Isabel Allende could write enduring prose based on anything she even witnessed in passing. Writing on what she knows the most intimately allows for effortless and nearly flawless prose even in translation. I feel that after this book I have come to know her and her family better and now reading her books feels like meeting with an old friend rather than a famous author. As always I look forward to when I can curl up with her novels and memoirs.

Ha....I bought it myself! I 'use' to own a physical copy --but I gave it away --
Now I'm happy to own the ebook copy myself. (a keeper! I could easily re-read this gem)

Even if.......you are not a fan of Isabell Allende's fiction books (can't understand way) -- lol --but even if not -- this is the BEST little human-story!!!! Or maybe --its just me -- (I love it) -- and simply wanted to share its a great price today --for those who are interested -and haven't read it!
If you have grandkids -you'll especially be charmed!

I LOVE LOVE LOVE this book! I wish I owned a copy of it!!!! Damn--I need to get myself a copy of this book!!!

I bought it for my sister after I read it.

I wanted to invite Isabel Allende over for dinner when I was done reading --
I wanted to be part of her tribe of friends!

I fell in love with Isabel -and her family!

I STILL talk about funny parts of this book....(when her husband wrote a book),
Isabel went to a party one night and a dentist asked what she did for a living. Isabel wanted to lie to him, but told him the truth. He said...."Really, a writer, huh", well, I'm going to write a book when I retire". I was dying laughing when she told the guy she was going to PULL TEETH when she retired.

Later that night --the conversation she has in the car with her husband driving home is sooooooooooo funny!

Many wonderful 'personal stories' in this memoir.
I'm not even a huge memoir fan! But this one was soooooooooooooooo much fun --so warm --so CRAZY GREAT!


I'm only sharing about this book today ---because another GOODREADS FRIEND had 'marked' it to read. I got excited for her!

كنت في الصيف الماضي قد عزمت على قراءة السيرة الذاتية للعزيزة إيزا، الجزء الأول باولا ثم الجزء الثاني حصيلة الأيام و كنت أجهل تمامًا أنهما متوفرتان بترجمة العظيم صالح علماني في المكتبة التي أرتادها!

و بدأت هذا الصيف بباولا ثم قلبت حياتي رأسًا على عقب، يبدو أن إيمان إيزا بروح باولا قد أثر فيّ و جلب لحياتي أحداثًا لم أتوقعها يومًا...




و لم أستطع قراءة الجزء الثاني، كلما اقتربت منه، يحدث ظرف خارج إرادتي و لا أستطيع إطلاقًا، حتى تأذن الأقدار بالموعد المناسب ليكون هذا الكتاب هو ختام قراءات عام ٢٠١٨ الذي كان حافلًا بالنسبة لي في كل شيء، في دراستي و في علاقاتي بأصدقائي و في قناعاتي الشخصية ثم في تفكيري في مستقبلي!

لا أريد كتابة مراجعة، سيكون انتهاكًا صريحًا لمشاعر شخصية للغاية، لإن حياة إيزا في هذا الكتاب لا تعنيها وحدها، بل أعترف أني صُدمت عندما وجدت نفسي في الكثير من جوانب شخصيتها، الجيدة و السيئة، هي ليست سيرة ذاتية، بل لقاء حميمي بين إيزا و أقرب الناس إلى قلبها، زوجها الجميل ويللي و ابنها نيكو و روح باولا و أحفادها و صديقاتها العظيمات...
إذا كنت معتادًا على طبيعة إيزا السحرية في أعمالها...فستجدها هنا طفلة و مراهقة و زوجة و أم و حبيبة و أم فقدت روحها ثم حبيبة تكتشف نفسها ثم جدة و أم كبيرة لقبيلة قشتالية في بيت الأرواح الخاص بها...

توقفت أكثر من مرة أثناء قراءة الكتاب.
و لو أني من هؤلاء الأذكياء الذين لا يكملون كتاب لم يحبوه لكنت فعلت ذلك.
للأسف الكتاب الذي من المفترض به ان يكون خليفة واحد من أروع السير الذاتية في باولا كان بالنسبة لي بشع
ذكرني الكتاب بشئ أكرهه للغاية في عروض الستاند اب كوميدي عندما ينجح أخيرًا الكوميديان و يبدء يتحدث عن زوجته و أسرته و أطفاله و يصبح هذا الهراء كل محتواه الإبداعي
من تزوجت من تطلقت من الأطفال مرض او زحف او تكلم او تعلم السباحة.
و هذا هو أغلب ما يقدمه الكتاب بالإضافة الي نظرة لعقل ايزابيل و شخصيتها و التي احبها كثيرًا بغرائبيتها
فايزابيل ملحدة تؤمن بالأرواح و بالتكهن و النبوؤات و الكثير من الهراء الذي لا أؤمن به و لكن أحب شخصيتها و أنها مؤمنة به الحقيقة و أحب لو كنت مثلها في بعض الأشياء
الحدث الوحيد الذي ما زلت أتذكره و أحبه من الكتاب هو مقابلتها لجورجي أمادو فأنا أحب جورجي مع اني قرأت له رواية واحده فقط و لكنها كانت مبشرة جدًا بإبداعه و هي فتيان الرمال
أحببت في الكتاب ايضًا كلامها عندما تكتب كتاب جديد و كوميدية أسلوب إيزابيل عمومًا في أغلب الكتاب فعلي عكس باولا التي بكينا معها ستضحك هنا و بسعادة لأن إيزابيل مضت بحياتها و تستغلها أحسن إستغلال ، و لكن هناك بعض الحزن علي الأخص حكاية جينفر ابنة ويللي زوج ايزابيل و حكاية زوجة ابنها و خطيبة ابنها الآخر التان سوف يصبحان مثليتين و يسببوا قلاقل عديدة في حياتهم و حيوات المحيطين بهم ، ستتعاطف مع الأطفال الذين اجبروا علي المرور بهذا الإنفصال فجأة و علي الفتاتان التين سيبصح كل من يعرفوهم ضدهم و علي الشابان الذين فقدا حبيبتيهما في الوقت نفسه بدون اي ذنب فعلوه بالضرورة
الكتاب سيروق للكثيرين الحقيقة فالبعض ليس عندهم مشكلة بالقراءة عن مشاكل الزوجية و مشاكل الأطفال و رحلات قبيلة إيزابيل العديدة
و لكني لم أشعر حقًا ان الكتاب يمثل حدث مهم في مجمله مثل باولا و الذي تعرضنا فيه لأحداث كنت تشعر معها كأنك تشهد التاريخ نفسه..

اولین باری که با ایزابل آلنده آشنا شدم چند سال پیش بود که تو یه مجله مقاله‌ای در موردش خوندم که یه تیتری شبیه این داشت که بدون دست زیر چانه‌ات هم نویسنده‌ای یا یه همچین جمله ای و اولش پرداخته بود به اینکه تو همه‌ی عکسها دستش رو زیر چانه‌ش گذاشته.از همون روز ایزابل آلنده به دلم نشست و با خوندن این کتابش فهمیدم که چقدر میتونم دوستش داشته باشم.کتاب دوست داشتنی و دقیق و صادقانه‌ای بود.

حصيلة الأيام

هذا الكتاب هو نصف الحكاية – النصف الأول كان باولا -، حكاية السنوات التالية لـ 1992 م في حياة الكاتبة التشيلية ( ايزابيل الليندي)، ما بعد وفاة ابنتها ( باولا) وذرها لرمادها في غدير صغير في غابة كاليفورنية، حيث كانت تعود في أيامها الصعبة لتقترب من روح ابنتها، رغم أنها تؤكد طيلة الرواية أن روح ابنتها كانت موجودة حولها على الدوام حسيا ً، لا معنويا ً، وهو مكون ثقافي تشيلي سحري، ربما تسلل من السكان الأصليين، ولم تفلح سنوات عيشها في أمريكا في تخليصها من هذه الأفكار التي تبدو مضحكة للعقلانية الغربية.

الكتاب كتبته كاتبة وروائية محترفة، ولكن سطوره لا تبرز لنا هذا الملمح من ملامح شخصيتها، وإنما نجد أنفسنا في مواجهة أم وسيدة تشيلية تمضي حياتها بين أبنائها وأحفادها وهمومهم ومشاكلهم، وزوجة لاتينية لزوج أمريكي يجر ورائه عائلة أمريكية مهشمة ينغمس أبنائها في المخدرات.

ايزابيل رائعة جدا ً ككاتبة، وتجيد احتجاز القارئ بين سطورها، وإع��دته إلى صفحاتها مرارا ً، تفعل هذا في كل كتبها، ولكنها هنا لا تفلح في إظهار عالمها ككاتبة، رغم كم الكتب التي تتكئ عليها، فلذا تظهر عناوين كتبها وكأنها محشورة بين أحداث حياتها الغريبة.

في كتابَيّ ايزابيل الليندي "باولا و حصيلة الايام" تكشف لنا الكثير عن حياةٍ حافلة بالدراما عاشتها كإمرأة شُجاعة (لاتلقي سيفها تحوّطاً لأي طارئ) مسلحة بالثقةِ و الصبرِ و الوعي..
و الأمل  بتحسن الحال مهما اشتدت الصعوبات و ثقلت الأحزان اذ إن ( لابد للعذاباتِ ان تنتهي يوماً ما ) ..

عن أهميةِ الحبّ و الصداقة و العائلة و الأطفال..
عن تجاوزِ المِحنِ و المُضي قُدماً..

السيرة الذاتية كما يجب أن تكون، من لا يتمتع بهذا القدر من الصراحة و القدرة على المُكاشفة، عليه ان يحتفظ بذكرياته في صناديقٍ مُغلقة ..

اعتقد اني لن استطيع مفارقة عالم ايزابيل اللندي السحري، لحسن الحظ لا زال امامي الكثير من حكايات شهرزاد امريكا اللاتينية الساحرة و الماكرة و الآسرة ♥️

On the other hand, the writing and candour is much appreciated.

ما بعد باولا
كيف تتغلب الليندي على غياب ابنتها باولا ، نعلم ان الحياة لا تقف حين نفقد شخص غالٍ على قلوبنا نحن نستمر في التجول حاملين جثة ذلك الحب معنا
حين لم تنجح محاولة الليندي في ترميم وجه لمستقبل باولا و اصبحت باولا ذكرى مجيدةفي قلب أمها ، الذكرى تجسيد يحتاج احترام منا ، يحتاج حيز في مشاعرنا ، من منا له القدرة في مكاشفة ذكراه بكل اموره اليومية وكأنها حاضر لا ماضي

أمر مربك حقاً أنحن نحتاج للتشبث بالذكرى لننجو و نواصل مسيرتنا الحياتية
هذا يبدو مألوف لدى الليندي
دوامة هذه الكاتبة و الكم الكبير من حياتها يبدو واسعاً ك كون مبهر
أفكارها وطريقة قصّها عميقة و مذهلة

Me ha encantado conocer parte de la vida de esta autora tan especial, a través de "Paula" y "La suma de los días".

Al tratarse de una biografía, el ritmo no puede ser trepidante, aunque se trata de una cosa bastante interesante a la que le falta poco que añadir. Son continúas las sonrisas que desata, las emociones e, incluso, las carcajadas. Siempre recomendable .

Isabel Allende's books are treats I only indulge in occasionally because there are only so many of them and she's 74 (that worries me.) Still, I don't know why it took me so long to pick this up, it was released 10 years ago. It's wonderful, right up there with The House of the Spirits and Paula. We've had The Japanese Lover in fiction recently, but come on, Isabel, we need to know what happened after 2006. Another memoir, please?

هكذا أنا...بات لي أصدقاء لا أعرفهم إلا من خلال حروفهم...يقتلني الفضول للتعرف عليهم أكثر...ولا أصدق لمعرفتهم من حديثهم الذاتي عن أنفسهم

وهنا حديث الذات الأكثر إمتاعا وصدقا

فتلك هي إيزابيل الليندي كاتبتي المفضلة...تماما كما تخيلتها...تحيا بالروح التي تكتب بها...وتكتب بالسهولة التي تحب بها...
فاتنة آسرة محبة مغامرة مليئة بالشغف وبالمرح وبكثير من الجنون...غارقة بالحنين وحزن دفين لا يكاد يغادرها

أمها هي أطول علاقة حب في حياتها، لم تقطع الحبل السري بينهما أبدا، وابنتها باولا حيّة ترافقها كوجود ناعم...وتحاورها حتى آخر صفحات الكتاب


"كل الأحداث ما زالت طازجة في ذاكرتي. الجزء العاطفي ليس مرهقا، لأن سنوات كثيرة مرت وتعلمت منها كيف أعيش مع روح ابنتي بطريقة مريحة. ومع أنني اتمنى بقاءها على قيد الحياة، لكنها في قلبي."


مزيج غريب قدمته لنا إيزابيل في حصيلة أيامها...جمعت فيه تفاصيل حياتها وحياة أفراد أسرتها وخصوصياتهم...بتأملات ودروس حياة زاخرة...وبروح متراوحة بين الجد والمرح...تبكينا بالعمق الذي تضحكنا به...وتعلمنا كيف نحول خساراتنا إلى فعل..فثمة قصص لها القدرة على الشفاء

وهكذا كانت حكاياتها بالنسبة لي...دواء ناجع لكآبتي

روح كتبها تحوم بين الحروف وإن كانت لا تحتل الجزء الأكبر منها

تملأ الليندي بئرها وتغذي خيالها بالسفر...الذي تستمد منه حكايات رواياتها وتفاصيل شخوصها...ومن ثم تعكف على اكتشاف المزيد بدراسة تاريخية للواقع الذي ترسم حكاياته...وتكمل الوصفة بسبر أغوار داخلها وتجاربها الغنية وذكرياتها


"مم تتغذى المخيلة؟إنها تتغذى على ما خبرته، على الذكريات، والعالم الفسيح، والناس الذين عرفتهم، وكذلك الكائنات والأصوات التي أحملها في داخلي وتساعدني في رحلة العيش والكتابة"

لتبرز بعد ذلك شخصياتها من الظلام بكامل قاماتهم، بأصواتهم وروائحهم، يقتحمون عليها كوخها ويغزون أحلامها ويحتلون أيامها


يعجبني دوما في كتابات الليندي شخصياتها النسوية...وإدارة الدفة بينهن...وقد تحدثت هنا حديثا رائعا عن ذلك


"ففي كل كتبي تقريبا هناك نساء متحديات، يولدن فقيرات وضعيفات، ومقدرا لهن أن يكن خاضعات، لكنهن يتمردن مستعدات لدفع ثمن الحرية مهما كلفهن ذلك"


"أفضل لرواياتي بطلات قويّات لا يقدم لهن أحد أي شئ، وإنما يحصلن على كل شئ بأنفسهن"


جددت نيتي بعد هذا الكتاب أن أقرأ لليندي كل ما كتبت...ولكنني سأوزعها بين قراءاتي...كحبات الشوكولاتة الداكنة التي تمنحني شيئا من التفاؤل والرغبة بالمزيد.

"The Sum of Our Days" is a moving memoir by Isabel Allende of her family during the 1990's and early 2000's. She wrote it in response to her readers' wanting follow-up about her family after having read her first memoir about her daughter Paula; Paula had died as a result of a medical mistake in her 2o's.

Allende is a bright and interesting woman in her own right. I find myself wanting to call her Isabel in this review, as she wrote such an intimate picture of herself in the book. Isabel has experienced both great tragedy and joy in her life. She was a political refugee from a harsh regime in her native Chile which first led her to Venezuela. Later, she settled in San Francisco. To this day, she writes all of her books in Spanish.

She was abandoned by her father as a small child and raised by her mother (who later married a man that Isabel adored and called Tio). As of today's review, Isabel has been married 3 times. This book is about her relationship with her second husband, Willie. Isabel has two children, her son Nico and her deceased daughter Paula, whom she mourns daily.

What was remarkable to me in reading the book was Isabel's insistence and success at forming a tribe of both family members and close friends who live and work together. Her tribe has included her children, Willie's children, their spouses and exes, and all manner of adopted family members. Sometimes, the book felt too intense to read, due to being privy to so many people's personal struggles and sadness. For example, all three of Willie's children had severe substance abuse issues. He and Isabel feared that his daughter was dead; She vanished with no further contact.

Life is not static. What is offered in this book is a picture of Isabelle's life at the time she wrote it. Fifteen years later, I am certain that her life is different today. Readers will enjoy learning more about the Isabel behind her books when they read this. Her vitality, resilience and personality are on full display here.

I am now reading Violeta. In a podcast with Isabel Allende, she said this. "When I don't know what to do, I ask myself, 'What is the most generous thing I can do here?' And, if I do that, I can never go wrong."

تواصل المبدعة التشيلية سرد مذاكراتها بعد 13 عشر عاما من الجزء الأول المعنون باسم ابنتها باولا. أسلوب القص سلس إلى حد مزج التراجيديا بالكوميديا دون إرباك القارئ. كما أن النص مطعم بشخصيات فريدة، واقعية كالواقع وغريبة كالخيال.

تدور أحداث الأعوام الماضية من حياة ايزابيل الليندي في الولايات المتحدة الأمريكية. لذا فأسلوب الحياة وطبيعة المصاعب مختلفة عما ورد في "باولا". هناك تنوع عرقي، وجدال سياسي، هناك شذوذ جنسي، إدمان للمخدرات وعلاقات عابرة وغير ذلك من مواضيع الكتاب. لم يفوت النص الفرصة في انتقاد المجتمع الأمريكي في أكثر من موضع، بالذات في سياق التفكك الأسري الذي لا يشبه في شيء التكتل القبلي للعوائل التشيلية.

كسابقتها، تمتعك هذه المذكرات بصور زاهية من مناطق شتى في العالم، بعضها ناء والآخر مأهول حد الإكتظاظ. ترى بعيني كاتبة السطور، مناظر ومواقف قد لن تشهد مثلها ماحييت. وهو ماحدا بي أن أتمعن فيما فعلته ورأيته في ماخلا من سني عمري الثلاثين.

تتفوق "حصيلة الأيام" عن "باولا" بإيراد تفاصيل صنعة الكتابة، بدءا بتبلور الفكرة الخام، مرورا بطقوس الكتابة ثم النشر والترويج. كما يشهد الكتاب ميلاد كاتب شهير بعد تعسر مخاضه، تجربة تستحق التأمل.

هناك قصة جينيفر، ابنة ويلي زوج ايزابيل، قصة تفطر الفؤاد. تلوح لي كثيرا للأسف. بالرغم من النشوة الحاصلة من الكتاب ككل، يظل مصير تلك الفتاة يؤرقني ويدفعني للتساؤل عما قد يخبئه القدر للبشر من أحزان.

If I were feeling charitable I would give this memoir three stars, but since the book ended with a TMI scene in which Isabel and her elderly husband get naked together in a jacuzzi and she asserts her "non-feminist" love for him, I won't. It's a shame that this is the first Allende book I've read, because now I'm not sure if her fiction is any good. Based on the meandering nature and average prose of this memoir, my guess is not really, but maybe I'll still give The House of the Spirits a go since Isabel wrote it when she was younger (and presumably less pompous).

Most people who write memoirs do so, I feel, because they have a compelling or unique life story to tell. Usually these seem to involve poor or usual childhoods, which the author reflects on with humor. That or a celebrity pays a journalist to wrangle their scattered recollections into something resembling complete sentences. But Isabel is not a celebrity, at least not in the traditional sense; although she is doubtless extraordinarily wealthy, she leads a very normal, family-centered life, which does not exactly make for an engrossing plot. Some people have the gift of making the ordinary seem more interesting than it is, but such is not the case with Allende. Nor does she have any particularly sagacious advice to offer, or opinions that stray from beyond the realm of normalcy. She really wants you to know that she hates George Bush, for example, but so did a lot of people, and Allende's logic for doing so is neither unique nor particularly analytical. So, really, don't read this unless you already like Allende and want to know what her spoiled life in California is like. Oh, and who each of her children marry, and which grandchild she considers the most attractive.

After reading this memoir, I feel like Isabel Allede is maybe not as good of a person as she thinks she is. She repeatedly refers to herself as the matriarch of her "tribe" (and I have always found it distasteful to use that word outside of its anthropological definition), and meddles endlessly in her children's, stepchildren's, and various daughter- and son-in-law's affairs. Her daughter, Paula, dies from porphyria-related complications near the beginning of the book, but Allende has already written a second, separate memoir about that time (entitled, you guessed it, "Paula"). With the proceeds from the memoir about her daughter, Allende establishes a charitable foundation to help women and children after going on a trip to India and meeting a desperately impoverished woman who tries to give her baby daughter to Allende. Isabel never says what the name of this foundation is, though, and it's unclear what the foundation does (though Allende, in a typical show of nepotism, hires her daughter-in-law to run the foundation). She also gives her remaining offspring, Nico, a house, and frequently describes how attractive he is and how lucky any girl would be to have him as a husband (eew). She gives money and employment to various members of the close and extended family, which is cool in one way I guess, and also a bit disturbing and cloying in another (to what extent do her relatives view her primarily as a source of funds?)

Isabel also engages in a fair amount of body-shaming, which is not an attractive quality especially in a middle-aged woman of considerable means. She constantly harps on about how short she is; as a short person myself, I can assure you it's not that bad. At one point she describes how she teeters around on high heels and must cling to her husband's arm for support, and then later in the memoir she claims to be low-maintenance. She often observes that she is "no beauty", but from the few photos of her that I've seen online, Allende is not exactly unattractive. Isabel claims not to place a great deal of importance on physical beauty, as evidenced by the fact that all of the heroines in her books are "strong women" who cannot simply glide through life on looks alone. In reality, however, Allende's modus operandi is to surround herself with beautiful people. She decides that Lori, with her "model-like" figure, is a suitable match for her son Nico. She incorporates a gorgeous Greek-American woman (unrelated by blood or marriage), Juliette, and her two sons into her tribe and provides said "Aphrodite" with a job as her assistant. And she is constantly claiming that her husband, Willie, looks like Paul Newman, in a seemingly congratulatory aside to herself for snagging such an attractive partner.

The most cringeworthy part of the book, though, is probably her handling of Celia's story. Celia, an opinionated Venezuelan, was Nico's first wife and mother to Isabel's three grandchildren. After giving birth for the third time in almost as few years, Celia descends into a depression and eventually concludes that she is gay. She tells Nico, who says he has been betrayed, and decides that they must divorce. Isabel is outraged. She seems to blame Celia for causing discord in her family, and instead of being understanding, Nico asks Isabel to sever all communications with Celia. Allende recounts these developments in a dramatic fashion, and never concedes that Celia's oppressive Catholic upbringing might explain why she was not able to acknowledge her homosexuality until the age of 27. The Celia/Nico story takes up a large chunk of the book, and Isabel often remarks how embarrassing the entire episode was for the family. It is almost as though she takes a perverse pleasure in the gossip and drama the episode created. I found it distasteful that Allende would make this one of the primary plot elements in her memoir, as it seemed exploitative rather than essential.

Once Isabel has accumulated some money from her book sales, she and her husband purchase a large plot of land and build a custom house for themselves. She becomes, in her own words, a castellana: Mistress of the Castle. She goes on a trip to the Amazon. She takes her grandchildren on safari in Kenya. She has a heated pool installed. You know, rich people stuff. None of this would be so bad, perhaps, if she recounted it in an interesting way, but there is a cozy, almost cloying quality to Allende's writing. I thought at first it might be a fault of the translation, but Isabel herself asserts that she checked the English version before it was approved for publication. She seems to think her readers will find it interesting that she has sexual fantasies about Antonio Banderas, or that she helps her husband's accountant select a mail-order bride from China. She comes across as a meddling matriarch - something she herself acknowledges - and seems to be unduly proud of her status as castellana. She is simply not a person who I relate to very well, and I couldn't figure out why she cares about half of the things she did. Some might chalk this up to cultural differences and the importance that Chileans place on family, but Isabel's interest in her tribe seems to spring from a need to control others. Besides, it's not necessarily about the quantity of family you have surrounding you, but rather the quality and character of your familial relationships, which should be mutual acceptance, not judgement.

Oh well. I'll try House of Spirits and nothing else.

ضمت هذه المذكرات جميع أسرة ايزابيل بأستثناء ابن زوجها هارلي والذي كان لا يريد أن يظهر في هذه المذكرات.


انتهت رحلتي مع حياة ايزابيل كانت رحلة مليئة بأحداث حياتها، وتقلبات القدر،مرت على حياتها شخصيات وأسماء قد تكون خذلتها أو استمتعت بمعرفتها لهم، تحدثت في مذكراتها هذه عن الآمها عند وفاة باولا وذكرت أنها رثت ابنتها من خلال كتاب الفته عن حياة باولا ،ذكرت ايزابيل مغامراتها عند فترة مراهقتها وبينت أن لجدتها الفضل في تشجيعها في الكتابة والتأليف. سافرت معها إلى الهند حيث الفتيات ذات البشره السمراء والشعر الأسود الطويل واكملت رحلتها إلى الصين ومن ثم عدنا إلى تشيلي وكاليفورينا
وصفها للأماكن والأحداث جعلني أعيش معها تأسفت لما حدث مع ابنها نيكو وخيانة زوجته له وأصبحت من اؤلئك المثليين. منذ أول سطر في الكتاب ذكرت فيه سيلينا لم تدخل إلى قلبي لم أشعر بلحب نحوها أعتقد أنها بلا عقل أو عديمة النعمة -_-
أحببت نيكو ذلك الأخ الذي تمنيت الحصول عليه ):
أصبح نيكو ولوري ثنائي جميل يليقان ببعض 😀
كان ويلي الرجل الأصيل الذي لم يخن زوجته وصبر على مرها وحلوها هنيئا لها على الحب التي رزقت به .
وجدت بين سطور هذا الكتاب صداقة بين تابرا وايزابيل وأيضا في ما بعد أتت جوليت جميلة تلك العلاقة على الرغم من اختلاف العرق والبلاد.

تستحق حياة كل شخص منا أن تكتب وتصبح رواية في خلف الأبواب أسرار لا يعلم بها الناس

A partire dalla morte di Paula, e rivolgendosi a lei in un lungo racconto, Isabel Allende comincia a fare il punto della situazione ripercorrendo gli eventi significativi della sua vita, raccontando le storie e tratteggiando i caratteri di tutti i membri della sua “tribù”, una sorta di famiglia allargata a cui appartengono anche i personaggi più stravaganti e dove si scoprono le situazioni meno convenzionali.
L’intersezione tra mondi diversi e il tentativo di comprenderli e accoglierli senza giudicarli è uno dei fili conduttori della scrittura di Allende e questo vale anche per la molteplicità dei piani della realtà, che non può essere ridotta a una sola dimensione, un solo punto di vista...ma di cui va accolto e rispettato il mistero. Le esperienze negative, comprese le più dolorose o le più assurde, diventano allora occasioni per disvelare, togliere ombre all’opaco e incompreso scorrere dei giorni.
Si comincia dal dicembre 1992, quando tutta la famiglia andò nel bosco a spargere le ceneri di Paula, secondo le sue precise indicazioni, e attraverso un percorso a capitoli si arriva al momento presente, nel 2006, quando, attraversati gli anni, i paesi, gli eventi, che spesso sconvolgono un ordine sempre provvisorio, Isabel e suo marito Willie si concedono una vacanza e una tregua, lontano da tutti e vicini a se stessi.

This is a sweet and absorbing compendium of the goings-on in Allende's family in the years since her daughter's death. Though it recounts heartaches and sadnesses, the overall tone is wry and upbeat. It's really just a tale of life in a kooky but loving extended family, with emotions and ups-and-downs that a lot of us can relate to--not the specific events, of course, but the general feelings. Not that many of us take regular trips to the Amazon or India, have a daughter-in-law come out of the closet after 3 children and move in with your stepson's fiance, or go on a four-day drug-induced hallucination. But the desire to create a family circle, the daily irritations of marriage, the grief that sneaks up on you, the sorrow of not being able to remove others' pain, these common emotions are what draw you in to this very personal work. Allende is open with her grief and fear, and self-deprecating with her humor.

Having heard her read from the book when it came out made a big difference in how I read. I would have enjoyed it anyway, but more of the dry sense of humor came through when I imagined it in her voice, much the same way as I experience reading David Sedaris. (I can't believe I'm comparing Isabel Allende to David Sedaris, but there it is.) At any rate, it is a pleasant and absorbing read, whether or not you have read any of her novels (though you may have a better sense of her if you've read some of her other work).

La segunda parte de Paula no es Paula, ni deja el imborrable calado que Paula deja. Pero volver a pasar unos días con el clan Allende no tiene precio. Saber qué fue de ellos después de la tragedia que marcó el gran punto de inflexión de sus vidas. Darles la mano en su día a día, más cercano al realismo mágico que a la rutina que suele corresponder al mortal anodino medio. Maravillarnos ante la forma de sentir, interiorizar e interpretar la vida de Isabel Allende, ante su sentido del humor y su honesta autocrítica...

Me quedo un poquito huérfana. Siento que en mi vida ahora faltarán ya para siempre Isabel, el tío Ramón, la Memé y el Tata, Nico y Lori. Inolvidables, simple y sencillamente.

Isabel Allende writes of her life after the death of her daughter Paula and how her family, her "tribe" stays together with love and respect through joys and tragedies. I learned a great deal about myself as I listened to this audio book narrated by Blair Brown.
We all need a tribe, a family we create for ourselves to sustain us and to give us something to live for, but we also need our own space. Allende is good at the tribe building, but not so good at the quiet self nurturing. I am good at cocooning away, but have let my tribe fall vacant.

A good insight into a complex author.

كثيراً ما سُئلت من أين يأتي إلهام كتبي لست أعرف الإجابة إنني أراكم في رحلة الحياة تجارب تأخذ بالانطباع في أشد طبقات الذاكرة عمقاً وتتخمر هناك *وتتحول ثم تنبثق في بعض الأحيان كنباتات غريبة من عالم آخر .

وكما أحببتها دوماً قوية \ رقيقة كنسمة في رواياتها سيرة إزابيل لليندي هذه التي كتبتها بطريقتها وكما ترى هي ذاتها وأسرتها ساخرة من الحياة ومن مشاكل الحياة ومن ألامها , تتحدث في هذا الكتاب وكأنه رسالة طويلة لأبنتها ( باولا) التي ماتت بعد صراع مع المرض وخلفت فراغات هائلة في قلب وحياة وروح والدتها إزابيل الليندي التي بحثت عن كل الطرق لكي تتواصل مع ابنتها بعد الموت مرت بطقوس لأديان غريبة , ترى روح باولا قريبة منها دئماً تحدثها وكأنها بين يديها أو تتكئ عليها كما تفعل الأمهات دائماً حينما يتحدثن مع بناتهن الأقرب إلى قلوبهن,

مرت بطقوسها المصاحبة لكل كتاب تؤلفه بين زياراتها الخاطفة الدامعة لغابة باولا التي قذفوا برمادها كما أوصت في بحيرة كانت تكتب قابضة على حفنة من رماد جسد ابنتها تخلطه بتربة الأزهار ورمل الحديقة تخلطه وكأنها تريد لباولا أن تنمو من جديد بجانب غصن الوردة أو أن تفلق الأرض لتخرج وتنفض عنها جذور الأشجار وتبتسم لعائلتها , أحسست بقرب التقاليد التشيلية فيما يخص العائلات من تقاليدنا, دائماً مجتمعين متقاربين تعيش في مكان واحد قريب يتواصلون ويكبر الأحفاد قريبون من الجدة الحنونة , أحببت كفاحها كيف تقرب أبنائها وكي تقوم لهم اعوجاج أيامهم , كيف تكون حماة غريبة الأطوار وكيف تكون جدة تدلل حفيدها وتراقبه يكبر , كيف تكون زوجة مكافحة, كيف تسافر بحثاً عن الإلهام لقصة وكيف تحاول خلق رحلات تعيش في عقل أحفادها وتحفز خيالهم ,
أحببت عائلتها وخصوصاً الجدة هيلديتا التي بكيت كثيراً على موتها .

حياتنا هنا ( نحن معشر النساء ) عبارة عن ترجمه لرغبات غيرنا لا تكون أبداً خياراتنا إلا ما ندر نابعة منا حينما قرأت حياة إزابيل بكل طقوسها الغربية وأفكارها عرفت بأننا لا نلمك تجارب حقيقية هنا ولا خيارات نابعة من ذواتنا الحقيقة مجرد بعض تجارب مكرره نمضي بها على مضض خوفاً أو لا مبالة أو كواقع مفروض علينا .

Isabel Allende is an author who knows how to write AND live a full life. In this memoir, which is post Paula, she takes us on some of her many adventures and lets us into her soul. Although there were times when I was overwhelmed with the sheer number of people in her “tribe”, she needed to introduce us so that we could see her outreach. Her generosity and tolerance for drama were admirable. Her possessiveness about her grandkids was over the top. She used therapists, fortune tellers, ancient rituals and challenging trips for her personal clarity. She figured out ways to keep her family intact and incorporate others into her tribe. Her memories of her daughter Paula were etched into her soul and shaped her actions. Not for one day did she forget her life and death.

The insights into her writing research and habits were interesting. Starting a new book every year on Jan. 8th both centered and frustrated her. Her research and contemplation before beginning a book was extensive and seemed to pay high dividends. I totally agree with her comments about writing children’s books. Publishers try to protect children from the ‘evil’ in life that many of them have already experienced. Their emphasis on positive messages insults middle age children’s ability to find their own messages.

Isabel and Willie’s relationship was a constant that I found very endearing. His patience and love for his extended family were admirable. Their gradual, deep appreciation of each other was beautifully written. Thanks for letting us into your world.

Io amo sempre la Allende quindi la recensione di questo libro è anche e molto dettata da un gusto persona e una sorta di affetto per questa autrice calda, coinvolgente, che porta il realismo magico nella dimensione contemporanea.
Questo libro è una raccolta di istantanee della vita dell’autrice, scritto come una lunga lettera alla figlia defunta Paula (se non avete letto l’omonimo libro, fatelo. Ma piangerete, vi avviso.).
Momenti significativi dove emerge chiarissimo non solo il modo potente, incantato e passionale di attraversare la vita da parte della Allende, ma che presenta una schiera di vicende e persone reali tanto incredibili e vividamente descritte da sembrare romanzo.
In tutto questo emerge forte un senso di fatalità, fiducia, forza nel navigare la vita e il destino.

This is Allende's second memoir, and she writes it to her daughter, Paula, who died maybe about 10 years earlier. It is an account of everything that has happened in Allende's family since Paula's death. As it is a memoir, clearly, it reads very differently from Allende's typical saga stories. The narrative arc, following the day to day events of life, is not always so smooth, naturally. What I really loved about this memoir is Allende's ability to talk openly about some of the deepest pains in her life and in the life of her family. She is not one for melodrama, not at all... instead, she has a talent for getting right to the heart of the matter and describing it with compassionate precision. I admire this ability greatly, as I find it very difficult to write clearly and truly sincerely about some of the most painful moments in my own life. Allende does it with such ease and such beauty that it inspires me to write more and try harder to really say what has happened in my own life without any pretensions or ideas of how it "should" sound.
