In two weeks, Delaney Reed will marry the man of her dreams. Everything is perfect. So why are the gods following her around like she suddenly needs a bodyguard?
It might be because her fiancé is forced to serve an outsider god who hates Delaney and the town she protects. It might be because the local Valkyrie hired a social media star who is determined to expose Ordinary’s secrets. Or maybe it’s because the king of hell wants to take over the world and Ordinary is standing in his way.
Whichever disaster has the gods on edge, Delaney isn’t going to let anything get in the way of walking down that aisle. But when an attempted murder and kidnapping hit with a one-two punch, Delaney must take on the pain-in-the neck gods, the nosy streamer, and all the demons in the Underworld before her chance to say “I do” is lost forever.
Devon Monk is a national best selling writer of urban fantasy. Her series include Ordinary Magic, House Immortal, Allie Beckstrom, Broken Magic and Shame and Terric. She also writes the Age of Steam steampunk series, and the occasional short story which can be found in her collection: A Cup of Normal, and in various anthologies. She has one husband, two sons, and lives in Oregon. When not writing, Devon is either drinking too much coffee or knitting silly things.
Delaney is just trying to get to her wedding day before some disaster strike ordinary again. She is feeling a little watched since it always seems that a god just happens to show up at whatever she is doing and tries to hang out with her. Seems they are a little concerned about the current King of Hell being interested in taking over the gods vacation town of Ordinary.
This is another fun story with interesting characters and weird happenings. When an influencer comes to town he also seems to be everywhere and if Delaney and Company aren't careful he might just expose their sleepy little town to the entire world.
As is there will be an expedition into Hell with some of our favorite side characters. Excel is hilarious as always and Dragon Pig is the best little piggy looking dragon ever. I really enjoy all the quirkiness of this series. There is always something happening in vacation spot to the gods and it is always entertaining.
Another fun story, maybe not my favorite of all of them but it has enough going on to always keep you entertained as you root for Delaney and her sisters as they try and keep the peace in a town that should be a little bit on the sleepy side of life but is anything but.
Finally... the wedding of the year (decade?) is coming to Ordinary. It's the wedding of Chief Delaney Reed and the love of her life, Ryder Bailey. But of course, it is NOT Ordinary if we don't have any trouble coming before the wedding. This time, a social media influencer, Patrick Baum, is coming to Ordinary, bringing his social media program and his fans... but is he truly without any hidden agenda? And what's with the gods always stalking accompanying Delaney everywhere she goes?
I am VERY happy that Monk decides to deal with TWO things at once in this book. . Those two are the thorn on everyone's side (especially the Reeds sisters) since appear. It's GREAT to finally see it being dealt with and that the wedding indeed happened (yeah, it happens, I won't put THAT under spoiler tag 😆)
So this book ends with a great big sigh for me as a reader. I am sure there are still threats coming to Ordinary () but until the next book, this one ends happily for everyone involved.
I liked this one, but man... it had a hard time keeping my attention, I felt like I was constantly putting it down and it took me 3 days to read, a very long time for me, should have been one in one sitting. I'm glad we got to see the wedding, finally, it seems like it was a long time coming and you knew it wouldn't go off without a hitch. Yet I didn't expect what happened to happen, nor did I think it would be the big battle at the end, one you weren't sure who was going to survive. It's a good thing Crow cheated so that he was there to help out. It made the ending all the sweeter, for the town and for the newly married couple.
Delaney Reed and Ryder Bailey are getting married and of course the last few weeks cannot go smoothly. Demons are up to something, there’s a social media star nosing around, the god that has tricked Ryder into a contract is taking up most of his time, and the gods are following her around like they think something is going to happen to her. Once Delaney finds the perfect dress, she will fight through hell itself to get to the alter and say “I do” to the man of her dreams. Of course, after everything that goes on, the wedding itself is a magical dream, full of family, friends and love, which Delaney and Ryder deserve so much. I have to say, besides their dog, the awesome Spud, the dragon pig is one of my favorite characters. And the antics of the former queen of the demons are always good for a laugh. I really enjoy the stories in the Ordinary Magic series, and look forward to the next one.
Such a great book and series! These characters are all so great! I hope this gets picked up for a movie or a TV show. I could see it go either way on this awesome series! Finally, we had the wedding we were waiting for and epic battle with hell. This book had so much love and war and everything we love from Ordinary. I have three favorite characters but it is so hard to pick just a few. My favorites are Delaney, Ryder, and Than, but in this awesome epic series there are sooo many great characters. When you read this series, you will have your own favorites. Thank you, Devon, for such a great series. I can't wait to see what you write next!
This was such a fun installment! It was full of all the things that made me fall in love with the series in the beginning - lots of great side-character involvement and good humor. The Gods were cracking me up throughout. The love between Delaney and Riley - so sweet! (✮✮✮✮½)
Books with weddings in them are always fun. I enjoyed the combination of cheesy humor and sentimentality in this book, as well as seeing most of the characters we've come to like in the series.
“Brute of All Evil” begins two weeks prior to Delaney and Ryder’s wedding. Delaney is avoiding every aspect of wedding planning especially dress shopping while Ryder is planning everything down to the cheese for the reception. Of course nothing in Ordinary ever runs smoothly and this time is no different.
Patrick “Road” Baum, a popular travel/ destination social media reviewer is in town and he wants to spend time with Delaney so he can get a sense of the town. He just reviewed the town of Boring where Bertie’s sister lives. They are in competition for the best town. However, there is something strange about Patrick and Delaney wants to know exactly what kind magical creature he is.
Additionally, Delaney is convinced that the gods are following her around in an effort to protect her. After several attacks that may not be such a bad idea. Of course, the god, Mithra is running Ryder ragged and seems to have a hidden agenda of his own. However, when someone important is kidnapped all hell is about to break loose.
This was a wonderful installment highlighting the time just prior to the wedding. The gods are still acting in their quirky way and the Reed sisters are trying to control and minimize the damage. There is plenty of action and subterfuge making this read one of my favorite.
The wedding at the end was nice but the rest of the book lacked a bit for me. Mostly because of the pacing (which was exactly what I expected). I think the pacing makes it so descriptions are shorter than I like in fantasy. I probably didn't notice it before because I was enjoying the Graphic Audio productions of the books and that isn't available yet for this book so I just went on and read it with my eyeballs. Graphic audio adds a lot of vibes for me both with the cinematic sounds and the full cast productions so the voice actors eject personality into the characters. And it works because those voices are how mostly envision they sound when talking. Not having the extra layer of the audiobooks did make me notice some things I hadn't noticed before. Although it might just be that it was less present in the previous books.
I absolutely loved the ending (this book) of this series! I fell in love with a character's throughout the series and they were awesome and didn't let me down, I felt that this storyline for the ending was very well written and had a few plot twists that I did not see coming, yes, I was invested with the characters so I cried at the end! I listened to all of the books on Audible using the graphic audio version and all of the voice actors today phenomenal job! I love the way they all brought their characters to life and made the story so much more exciting and interesting. I'm glad that I listened to this story. I also have the Kindle version which was nice because I could read along with the story. Overall, super happy I red / listened to this series!
Can't believe that it's over. I had so much fun with this series, it was whimsical and full of banter, and love. I laughed so much and I will miss that. I kind of wanted to reach the ending but at the same time, I want more of those characters (at least from some of them). I can't say it's a masterpiece, some things should have been done differently I think, more action in the book itself and not just in its ending. It felt like it was supposed to be a really big thing but it really isn't that. It's a light romantacy book, guaranteed to make you laugh, even if some things seem ridiculous (and not all of them in a good way). I recommend this series, it was fun and I will miss it.
This whole series combines the mundane with the extraordinary, using light touches of humor and a solid dose of *consequence* to weave an entertaining whole. This is urban fantasy with a light touch: very little blood, no graphic sex, and a modicum of whimsy. Even the romance parts are sparse.
A few threads left dangling at the end. But the MC finally got her wedding. Not without some insanity on the way, of course.
This is a great story culminating into Delaney and Riley’s marriage. Lots of people coming to town. An influencer spurred on by Bernie’s need to bring fame to the town. Demons coming for Delaney and a naughty leprechaun. The demons are trying to influence Ordinary and Delaney has to try and stop it but not without the help of the town members who have grown to appreciate her. Can’t wait for the next one.
This was a fun romp even when the stakes are high. I mean we have a bet between valkyries about which town is better, an influencer roaming the streets of Ordinary, a wedding that is a mere 2 weeks away and a Demon king who wants to conquer/devour Ordinary. I loved the action in this book. And the laughs. The ending was very well done and if there are no more books in this series this is a great place to end the series.
I am a fan of Devon Monk, and I love the Ordinary series. It may be book 9 of the series, but what an amazing ride this one took us on! I loved that most of the God's had a role in the book and how magical and wonderful the ending was. Thank you for writing such a marvelous and endearing series!!!
I love this series so much that even though the publisher consistently fucks over dedicated readers by refusing to sell the audiobook when they sell all the other versions, this is one series where I will give in to the publisher chicanery and buy both the Kindle and the audio version, because I really cannot wait to find out what happens!
This was yet another great addition to the series!!
I listened and read the other books but I love the graphic audio versions. The other books have this versions available and I am listening again this book is the only one that doesn't have it. Any idea when this one will be available? I like these books lighthearted and have a mystery.
It's difficult to make the leap from Monk's other excellent series, the gritty Allie Beckstrom, to this gentle, funny series about gods on vacation. Both are wonderful, but Ordinary Magic just pulls at the heart a little with its gods trying to take a relaxing vacation. They just want to have fun.
The dramatized audio version of BOAE by Graphic Audio is not to be missed.
I am not a crier... but that wedding scene! Oy vey!! So beautifully written. I felt as though I were there- teary eyed and cheering on the Bailey Reeds. Wonderful series. Thank you Devon!
This world is a lot calmer than your others. Still waiting for your steam punk to start up again. I think this is the end of ordinary unless we start the next generation!
Great book, full of action from beginning to end. I don't usually read books about God's but this series is such a fresh take on the gods stories and so well written you will love them!
Having lived on the Oregon coast for eight months Ms Monk’s words are true and beautiful. There are lots of battles, lots of family and even more love. We drove from Astoria to Gold Beach— Ordinary is well hidden. Thank you so much. Great story!
to write such a great series of gods, demons, harpies, dragons and all kinds of wonderful, magical creatures. The red thread throughout the series is diversity, respect, and steadfast moral principles. Well worth reading.
Book number 9 in this series pulls together different story threads to finally bring together Delaney and Ryder as a married couple. Getting there means dealing with a social media influencer leprechaun, demons, and Mithra ties to Ryder - but all is tied together in positive conclusion.
Gotta love these characters. They make you laugh out loud, roll your eyes and shake your head all within a short period of time. They rise to fight, to take care of their friends and family in an instant. Without worrying about the dangers to themselves. Love this series.
I am so glad that my wish finally came true. She finally got married. That Dragonpig is a hot mess and has labeled, both husband wife as a part of his hoard. It wasn't sure how this was gonna play out. That damn leprechaun worked my last good nerves. If it quacks like a duck...

A boisterous end to a rollicking series. I thought I never wanted to end, but this was a good ending with an appropriate wrap up. Great, loving characters and charming settings throughout.
