Snow White might be jinxed -- but at least she has the other grimmtastic girls to count on!
Once upon a time, in faraway Grimmlandia. . .
No matter how many lucky charms she wears, Snow White can't catch a break. She's especially worried that her stepmom, Ms. Wicked, is a member of the E.V.I.L. Society. Snow and her friends Red, Cinda, and Rapunzel are trying to stop E.V.I.L.'s plans to destroy Grimm Academy, but Snow seems to be jinxing all their efforts. Her luck might change if she can find her own truly magical charm -- before it falls into E.V.I.L. hands!
NY Times bestselling children's book author: GODDESS GIRLS series + HEROES IN TRAINING series (w Suzanne Williams); THIS LITTLE TRAILBLAZER a Girl Power Primer; ZERO THE HERO; I AM THE SHARK. Lucky to be doing what I love!
Buddy read with a very cool 3rd grader. I would have rated this 4 stars at first, as in 'good enough,' however 3rd grade is a more target audience than I am and some good points were made justifying 3 stars.
This is pretty sharply written and engaging. It was a successful first chapter book. Favorite characters are there like Principal Rumpelstiltskin and Professor Hump-Dumpty, Cinderella, etc. Great vocabulary, some ok talking points on themes but nothing heavy. There is a mystery that ends on a cliffhanger. Some issues were with the pacing. Some scenes went on too long in a repetitive manner. My reader pointed out "we're still talking about those shoelaces?". And there were a couple attempts at humor that was pointed out to me were cringe. The prince's name is Prince, and that was confirmed cringe
We will be reading more of this series because it's a great learning tool for the target age group, and not a bad cast of characters to keep mom engaged too.
{My Thoughts} – Snow White what a lovely character. I truly enjoy reading about her, she’s just so so wonderful!
The girls are still following the clues they get from the mapestry to try and discover the hidden treasure. X marks the spot right? In this case yes and no. I am always entertained when reading these books.
We get to learn a lot more about Red, Snow, Rapunzel, Cinder, Wolfgang, and Ms. Wicked. These characters and this story blend together so nicely that it is almost like you are reading an original fairy-tale!
The objective in all of these books thus far is for the girls to attempt to find away to save their school and well all of Grimmlandia. Will they be able to? I suppose you’ll need to read the books to find out.
If you enjoy fairy-tales and retellings of classic tales, I am sure you will enjoy these books, I know I certainly do!
I love how the author weaves in elements of the traditional fairy tales in a unique modern twist, like how Snow is allergic to apples and afraid of mirrors. My daughters and I look forward to reading Rapunzel's story in the next book!
Snow, Rapunzel, Red, and Cinda are best friends at Grimm Academy. But EVIL lurks when the girls find Mr Hump Dumpty talking to Ms Wicked, Snow's evil stepmother. Plus, there's the whole deal with the mapestry... EVIL wants to find it and take the treasure. And then there's Prince Prince who's new to the school. Will Snow end up going to the ball with him?
I thought this book was ridiculous. The author was trying to be so cute with her nursery rhyme and fairy tale references that the whole story suffered. Obviously, there was no character development, and it was tough to follow along... and even get through the story. Could have been cute, but I felt like it was an epic fail.
I have anything to do with fantasy... and this book was just that. Nothing made any sense, and that just made the book even harder to read. Maybe kids would see it differently?
I wanted to read a fun and easy book that was still exciting. I got this book and it was really laid back but there were still mysterious questions that pooped into my head while reading the book and there was still lots of adventure. Joan Holub made the Snow white character insecure and full of bad luck and she was also very curious and creative. I loved how he turned the original snow white character into something different. So if you want to just have fun easing a funny and cool book then this is a really good choice.
My daughter was delighted to get this book from a First Reads giveaway. She read it in less than a day! She loves reading about fairy tales and fantasy, so this series is right on target for her. I read this book after she finished, and it didn't take me long, either. My favorite parts are the little references to other fairy tales and nursery rhymes, such as the fact that one of the people working in the school's infirmary is the lady with the alligator purse.
Very clever in weaving (practically all the) fairy tales/objects/rhymes, etc into the storyline. A fun read...But a 4+ rating...mmmmm, not so sure. While it's a fine standalone book, starting from the beginning of the series probably would have made this a better read.
This story is about Snow White who faces her evil stepmom who might be part of the E.V.I.L. Society. I would recommend this book for children aged 10~12.
