Charles Lewis Grant was a novelist and short story writer specializing in what he called "dark fantasy" and "quiet horror." He also wrote under the pseudonyms of Geoffrey Marsh, Lionel Fenn, Simon Lake, Felicia Andrews, and Deborah Lewis.
Grant won a World Fantasy Award for his novella collection Nightmare Seasons, a Nebula Award in 1976 for his short story "A Crowd of Shadows", and another Nebula Award in 1978 for his novella "A Glow of Candles, a Unicorn's Eye," the latter telling of an actor's dilemma in a post-literate future. Grant also edited the award winning Shadows anthology, running eleven volumes from 1978-1991. Contributors include Stephen King, Ramsey Campbell, R.A. Lafferty, Avram Davidson, and Steve Rasnic and Melanie Tem. Grant was a former Executive Secretary and Eastern Regional Director of the Science Fiction and Fantasy Writers of America and president of the Horror Writers Association.
This is the third volume in Grant's long-running horror short fiction anthology series. He preferred cerebral terror to explosive violence, and his editorial choices always fit well with dark, quiet nights and spooky sounds and shapes in the shadows. Cue the creepy music...

So far I've read books 1 - 5 & # 10 of the SHADOWS series which features stories of "quiet horror." Most of the stories are somewhere between mediocre & competent. At this point SHADOWS 5 is easily the best one because its stores easily rise a little bit above the others. My intent is to get through all eleven or twelve Shadows books and through another 5 or 6 of these Grant edited anthologies unless their continued mediocrity scares me back to something a little more wet.
Why Living Social only includes Shadows 1, 2, 3, 6 & 8 and does not include #s 4, 5 7, 9 & 10 is beyond me.
A great series of horror anthologies, often featuring stories from lesser known writers but ones with more imagination than the mainstream stuff being published at the time in novels. This series influenced my desire to write horror.
I truly enjoyed this book. All of the collaborative stories were interesting, even though some I loved more than others. However, even when I didn't like a story as much as my favorites, there was always something written within a story that I did enjoy reading.
