Book info: I am the author of the Iron Seas steampunk romance series. I've written a guide to the world (including a map) on my website.

I also write a paranormal romance series, the Guardians. That series guide is also on my website, including a "The Story So Far" feature, which allows you to catch up on all of the books that previously released in the series if you start after the first installment.

Goodreads info: I am slowly, slowly adding to my shelves and reviews. It's unlikely that I will join many book discussions (especially of my own work) simply because I don't want to stifle reader conversation.

Bio: Meljean was raised in the middle of the woods, and hid under her blankets at night with fairy tales, comic books, and romances. She left the forest and went on a misguided tour through the world of accounting before focusing on her first loves, reading and writing–and she realized that monsters, superheroes, and happily-ever-afters are easily found between the covers, as well as under them, so she set out to make her own.

Meljean lives in Portland, Oregon with her husband and daughter.

This part like its predecessors begins with a letter from Zenobia to her brother Archimedes. I love these letters. First, they give the reader a location and a time stamp so that there is an idea of where we are in the story. Second, they give the reader a sense of Zenobia's mind and condition at the beginning of this part.

Ariq and Zenobia are separated. Zenobia has got to be one of the most kidnapped characters ever. She is a little blase about it, seeing her kidnapping as essentially a business transaction. Zenobia knows that Ariq will find her, however she doesn't just hang around and wait to be rescued. I love this about Zenobia - I love how she thinks so quickly and looks for a way out on her own. And Ariq - have I said how much I want an Ariq of my own? He is just awesome as he fights, swims, and fights some more for his love.

I am just loving this. I've enjoyed the Iron Seas series thus far but the Kraken King has got to be the most exciting book so far. The world is so detailed, original, and fascinating. The contraptions and gadgets are so interesting and cool. I loved the jellyfish balloon. And the land and seas are full of dangers - boilerworms, megalodons, and kraken. Amazing.

I love the main characters. Ariq and Zenobia are perfect for each other. I love how they take care of each other. There's a perfect mix of brain and brawn.

I like that each part of this book is a small, self contained story. There really isn't a cliffhanger per se, but you'll want to have the next part ready.

Should you purchase this book as a serial or wait until the full book comes out? That is a good question. If you love Meljean Brook and are familiar with the Iron Seas world, then purchasing this book in installments would be a good idea. The final book looks like it's going to be quite long, around 700 pages, so a full book may cost more.

I think one of the things that gets me the most about Zenobia is how fragile she is. Not physically, but emotionally. She has such a hard time believing Ariq would want her for her. Her captors strike right at the heart of her fears, but instead of breaking her, it gives her the strength to fight back.

As an aside, what the general did to Zenobia pained me. *quietly kicks things* I hope he gets what's coming to him. In a big, painful way.

Meanwhile, Ariq's determination to get to Zenobia despite all the roadblocks thrown in his way made me squeal. I admire a man who will do the unthinkable and stop at nothing to keep a promise. *slow thumbs up* to that.

It's going to be very hard waiting for the next installment. I want to know what's coming for our heroes. I want to know how they're going to work their way out of the issues that have arisen. *flails dramatically*

I feel like a junkie waiting for my next hit.

Zenobia has to believe Ariq will come for her. If she loses faith, she might as well curl up in a ball and give up on life. It isn’t until her abductor decides to have tea with her, and in doing so he dashes all her hopes, that she decides to save herself.

Ariq escapes and nothing matters more to him than getting back to Zenobia. Her captor was wrong; he would move heaven and earth to get back to her.

But still he has to worry about the Empress of the Red City sending her navy down to Krakentown. If she believes the lies and half truths being fed her, his town is doomed.

But will the Empress allow the Kraken King an audience?

And she did it AGAIN!

"I intend to brand myself so deep into you that you could write a thousand stories but still not picture a life without me. That is my purpose."

The first third of this serial, I wasn't sure if I was going to like it. I was feeling a bit irritated by Zenobia's insecurities, was wondering if Brook is going to do another back and forth, fell upset about the separation...and then BAM! *insert a turn in the story* And I was all over this shit!
I was eaten out of Brook's hand, was gobbling up each word, was feeling gooey, was impressed and awed and well left another pile of mush on the floor wishing it was Tuesday.
So as you might gather out of my rumblings, the story lines was rather satisfying.
The world building. Should I repeat myself? Oh well, I am going to. If you don't wanna hear AGAIN how amazeballs it is.. go ahead and skip this. But seriously, this has probably the least world building of all the installments so far. But even then Brook added new exciting elements to the ever growing world of Iron Seas. Her descriptions had me mentally gasping. She painted beautiful moments with her words, add another surprising element to it all and well, I.. well.. left me moved by the beauty she described and kinda speechless.
This installment is heavy on character building. It left me officially and certified in love with Ariq. I could fangirl for hours on end. But I shall just say: Loyal, strong, caring and hot! *Fans herself*
Zenobia was a tad annoying about certain things, too insecure too doubting.  And coming from miss commitment issues over here that says a lot. But then again it does fit her character, it is understanding given her history.
In fact in this installment I connect most with the two MC's, it felt like I got to become friends with someone I kinda knew.

I am swamped with work- so Serial Thursday ended up being the following Monday post. I think this might have been one of the few times I was glad that I only had time to read on Sunday night... less wait till Tuesday. Cause I am waiting here with baited breath! Less the 48 hours to the next installment! *looks at her kindle in anticipation* soon! *grins*

On a different note:
As I said before, I like the idea of Serials. For sentimental reasons mainly, but also I enjoy the whole getting tidbit here and there, waiting, the anticipation, the waking-up to a new serial on my kindle... all of it is fun. Though I had my doubts after the third serial- I am loving the process and enjoying the whole event.
My biggest issue though about it is the price, quite frankly I refuse to pay more than $11 for ebooks- with very few exceptions- I then rather will spend money on a hardcopy. So paying $1.99 per serial... makes this nearly a $16 book. SO frankly I have been wondering if I should have just waited and bought a paperpack. There have been lots of discussion about that issue and this week Brook sent out a mail explaining why she does a serial:

First of all, the answer is a flat-out NO. I would never do that. I know that not all of my readers like the serial format (or the price tag) but I didn't release the book like this to bilk as much money as possible from those who are willing to pay. Quite simply, the serial was the only way I could get the book to you before this upcoming winter. If you don't like the format, please be aware that the full book is still coming later this year, which is when it would have been released, anyway. The serial just offers an option to those readers who would like to get it before the regular release date later this year. (If you would like a longer explanation, I talk about this more on my blog here.)

And with that Brook has won me over on the price tag as well. Because honestly, I spend more than $2 on coffee each day. After all I am enjoying my Serial Thursdays and with that I am actually happy to pay that price.
So this week Brook won me over on many many levels and reconfirmed her place among my favorite authors.

For frame of reference, this part starts with Chapter 16 of The Kraken King.

I just have to start by saying... OMG... Zenobia's letter is freakin' hilarious. Each section opens with one of her letters, each being spectacular, but this one is the best yet.

This week’s installment opens with Ariq and Zenobia, captured and separated. Ariq is on a ship, supposedly leading Admiral Tatsukawa, his brother’s father, to a massive war machine. Meanwhile, Zenobia is on a separate ship with General Ghazan Bator, heading in a different direction. Tatsukawa and Bator think that by holding Zenobia captive, Ariq will disclose the location of the weapon, but as we all know, Ariq would never put so many innocent people in danger. I feel I need to put a “spoiler alert” on this review because I do reveal whether or not each escapes and if they reunite. So, if you do not want to know that information, do not read further!

The Kraken King and the Iron Heart shares with readers an in-depth look at both Ariq and Zenobia, and the reader is treated to some wonderful emotion-filled prose. First, the story centers on Ariq. The opening chapter gives careful detail and vivid descriptions of Ariq’s escape and all that he feels during those moments. We learn that Ariq is incredibly loyal and how serious he takes his vows, especially to Zenobia. I truly fell in love with Ariq at this moment. In addition, I appreciate how his impeccable honor is imbedded into his every thought and action.

Meanwhile, Zenobia takes the reader on some highs and ultimate lows as she experiences capture by Bator and life on his vessel. She has amazing fortitude, and I am impressed with how she keeps her wit about her when Bator will do anything to break her spirit. I love when she jokes that she didn’t get paid for Nipponese translation of her book. However, Bator does something unbelievably cruel, and my heart ached for Zenobia. This scene was well-written and emotionally difficult for me as I experienced Zenobia’s pain.

Yet Zenobia hardens her resolve and the reader is treated to an incredibly exciting, punctuated with humor, escape and the reunion of Zenobia and Ariq. Once the pair are alone and on their way back to the Red City, the story takes the perfect time to allow a true emotional bond to develop between the couple. The story does a great job of slowing down the pace at just the right time, yet building anticipation for what is to come next.

When reading any book, I tend to highlight my favorite passages, but rarely do I add quotes to my review. However, when Ariq thought these words, I just swooned so hard, and I was compelled to share my favorite quote with you:

“He hadn’t known that simply holding her in his arms would feel like a gift.”

Overall, The Kraken King and the Iron Heart is my favorite part of the book to date. The story slowed down after its initial burst of action, giving the couple some quality alone time and building a beautiful romance. I adore that Ariq put his heart and intentions out there, and the couple share some very hot personal moments. However, as the personal intensity shifted, it makes way for a powerful ending that is in stark contrast to the slower tempo held for the bulk of the tale. I cannot wait to get my hands on Part VI.

So romantic. I just adore Ariq.

Review originally posted at http://fictionvixen.com/review-kraken...

When we last left our couple they had been taken prisoner and the identity of the villains and their motives were revealed. Knowing they would be separated and Zenobia used against him to guarantee his cooperation Ariq made her a promise that he would come for her before the next new moon. And of course, our hero keeps his promises. :) Unable to wait any longer to be rescued Zenobia attempts a daring escape, only to be surprised when Ariq shows up and spirits her away. Now they must travel back to the Red City to get help stopping what Ariq fears will be the destruction of both the smuggler’s dens and Krakentown.

Even with the daring rescue at the beginning, this episode of The Kraken King is mainly about Ariq and Zenobia finally, finally spending some quality time together and coming to an understanding on where their relationship stands. It’s romantic, very sexy and has several swoon worthy moments. This couple is quickly becoming one of my all time favorites. Zenobia is fierce, cunning and completely caught off guard by the giant of a man who sweeps her off her feet and tells her she is everything to him. She doesn’t know exactly what is going on and it’s so very hard for her to trust. I love, love, love that Ariq is determined to convince her of his feelings and is waging a battle for her heart. Ariq is such a wonderful hero.

This won’t be a long review, part 5 is only chapters 16-20, just know that I am so in love with this serial. I didn’t think I would ever say that, but it’s so true. Meljean Brook has made me fall hard for this hero and heroine. Final Grade- A

On to The Kraken King Part VI: The Kraken King and the Crumbling Walls.

Favorite Quote:

Leaning over the rail, he looked to the dark water below. It was a long drop. A damned long drop.

But that didn’t matter. His wife was waiting for him.

As part 5 opens, our hero and heroine are still separated. Zenobia is being held while Ariq is forced to give up the location of the Skybreaker, a war machine that he has no intention of helping his captors locate. While separated, the scene I’ll remember most about this part involves Zenobia and the letters from her brother that she treasures. This particular scene is heartbreaking and I felt Zenobia’s spirit get crushed, and I hated it. I mean, I loved it because of how emotional it was but UGH, I want this woman to catch a break and be happy. Those feelings are coming, in the form of Ariq.

I hope this doesn’t come as a shock or spoiler, because Ariq and Zenobia are eventually reunited in part 5. Come on, we all knew it was going to happen, it was just of matter of how and that sequence is quite a bit of fun as we see Zenobia take matters into her own hands and come up with her own plan of escape.

I almost always read a book wanting my hero and heroine happy. Ok, I always want this. But here, my want for that is so strong for Zenobia. She’s always lived her life afraid and taking a chance on Ariq and his feelings is the ultimate risk for her. Seeing her realize that Ariq is real, his feelings for her are very real, hits her hard and she goes from having some doubt to wanting him, badly.

We’re left with our fearless couple enroute to an important stay in the Red City as Ariq’s home and people are now depending on him to stop an impending attack and war. No pressure…

Zenobia, oh, Zenobia. Alone and waiting for Ariq to keep his promise, her captors strike at her heart and the loss and anger stir her to action - it is great to see the woman who still sees herself as fearful act so bravely. And Ariq *sigh* his heart may be iron but he is one of Brook's most romantic heroes, as he works to keep that promise and to convince the woman he admires more and more that she belongs with him.

Whenever I read the Iron Seas books, I am so awed by the intricate settings and twists the to world, but I am truly amazed by the people who inhabit that world -they are always so well developed and unique and that means that reading this series I never feel like I am reading the same romance. And the Kraken King is turning out to be one of my absolute favorites because I am really loving Zenobia and Ariq, and I am loving them together. I am so happy that the time for the romantic payoff is at hand and I am not just talking the smexy time -though there is a bit of steam here - but romance that is more substantial than just the attraction that had been drawing the pair together. Though I am looking forward to the other as well, that is if they get a little more time to catch their breath.

So, this was a really great episode with lots of excitement and lots of emotion - I am really enjoying the fact that the weekly installments are keeping me immersed in Zenobia and Ariq's adventure and courtship.

I love Steampunk and enjoy reading Meljean Brook's work. I have been following The Kraken King religiously as they have come out. It is building up to become a great story, solid 4+ if you I was to rate it overall from book 1-5...

On a personal note: I am becoming NOT a fan of the serial/"Part" release trend.

Zenobia has been kidnapped to try and force Ariq’s hand and make him reveal the location of a devastatingly powerful weapon to the Horde rebellion – as an added threat, general Tatsukawa threatens to unleash the might of the Nipponese empire against his settlement.

Zenobia doesn’t expect rescue. Ariq is a ruler, he has people he is responsible for. And she’s no stranger to being used as a bargaining chip. While it hurts, the sensible thing is for Ariq to comply and leave her, or look after his people – and leave her

But Ariq does not respond well to threats

This book managed to play with a lot of romance tropes that could be very headache-worthy to read (because I’ve read so many) but manage to do it in a way that makes them really work. This seems to be a pattern with the whole Kraken King Saga and I have to say I love it

Take Zenobia’s pain and angst that Ariq won’t rescue her. She’s sad about that, it hurts her that she isn’t his top priority. But at the same time she understands it. She doesn’t think he won’t rescue her because she’s unworthy or not important to him or otherwise flawed and unloved. She doesn’t think he will rescue her because, as a leader of his people, it would be impractical and even selfish for him to do so. She knows how kidnapping works – you are held, unharmed, for ransom. There’s no reason for Ariq to make her a priority. It’s painful, but it’s based on solid logic.

Similarly, her own attempts to escape are not based just on how much she needs to see Ariq and how sad she is without him, but because she’s tired. She’s tired of always being the victim, of living her life in fear of being a target for her brother or – now – her lover. She has motivations and thoughts and pain and trouble which are not based on Ariq and are deeply personal and, in many ways, separate from him. Zenobia has always been her own characters – as has Ariq – which has always made their romance more compelling because they both have so much in their lives above and beyond each other. Their romance is an important part of the lives of two fully rounded and involved characters – but it isn’t their sole reason for being; these characters were created for more than just being a vehicle with which to display the romance

Zenobia isn’t good at escaping – it isn’t her skill set – but nor does she meekly wait for rescue and nor is she incompetent. Her plan is flawed, but reasonable. This book brings her to one of her lowest ebbs, but, again, her pain is very personal and a very reasonable part of her character – and completely separate from Ariq. She aches because of an attack to her family and her work and it cuts her deeply. I like that she’s not invulnerable but also that her vulnerability is not her love interest.

Review for parts 5 & 6

PARTS 5-6:
Man, this book is looong! I'd never thought I'd say it but I'm thankful THE KRAKEN KING is a serial otherwise it'll be one long epic adventure and I mean that literally!

So it's quite impossible not to read parts 5 and 6 back to back because of the events that happened. In part 4, Zenobia Fox was once again abducted for the nth time! So of course in The Kraken King and the Iron Heart, it's expected that Ariq will waste no time in rescuing her. And that he did single handedly with a little help from Zenobia of course. Aside from Ariq's daring rescue of his romantic interest, I'd like to highlight that something sad happened here. Zenobia's precious letters from Archimedes as well as the manuscript for the book she's working on were confiscated by her abductors and burned it. You might think, "But Braine, those are just letters," true but said missives were very important to Zenobia for a lot of reasons ranging from it's sentimental value to providing inspiration for her stories.

My favorite so far is part 6, The Kraken King and the Crumbling Walls. Why you ask? Because finally, after 5 parts of constant teasing, flirting, and seducing Zenobia, Ariq finally had some boom boom pow! It's sexy time LOL! But it's not just sex for the sake of sex, Zenobia and Ariq's romantic relationship made leaps and bounds here. I guess Zenobia's abduction was the necessary push needed for these two to finally take their attraction to the next level.

Ariq is such a complex hero and very traditional, very Asian, but still the gorgeous Alpha hero if that makes sense. There are slight nuances regarding Ariq's character vs other heroes in that his attraction to Zenobia didn't necessarily stem from her looks whereas the usual lead male responds to his love interest's female attributes. Not that Ariq is any better than them or is immune to Zenobia's wiles, it's just refreshing to read a hero that looked for and got attracted to the heroine's more substantial qualities than her superficial ones.

So it's a given that this serial is worth a try. And for those of you who are curious if you can read the Iron Seas books as stand-alone, yes you can. By Meljean Brooks' admission on her FB page, she said that the series doesn't have an overarching arc and from a reader who jumped to book 4 without reading the previous 3, I can guarantee that you won't feel lost. Zenobia might mention her brother but whatever happened in Archimedes' book bears no weight in THE KRAKEN KING.

Review of installments IV-VIII

Ariq has discovered who Zenobia is, but he still needs to uncover all her secrets, as well as win her heart, as she has surely managed to steal his. But he has a plan, her walls will fall under his sensual assault and she will learn to trust him and tell him all her secrets. But, as well as the battle to win Zenobia's heart, Ariq must also discover who is threatening Kraken town and stop their plot before a new war begins.

I confess I waited till all parts of this serial were out before I read them; it was so painful to stop at the third one last time! And it was well worth the wait, I loved it, Meljean Brooks sucked back into the world of the Iron Seas with ease and I couldn't stop reading until I had finished every word of The Kraken King.

I can't work out what I liked more, the romance between Zenobia and Ariq or the exciting world Brook has created, full of such intrigue and originality. I may have to say the romance, when a man as strong and wily as Ariq thrown in front of you, why resist? I loved his attack on Zenobia's"walls", as he calls them, desperate to win her trust and her love, especially when he seemed to have no idea that she was already defenseless against him. And Zenobia, it isn't often that I like a heroine as much as the hero, but I loved seeing Zenobia grow from writing about her brother's adventures, to having her own. It also helped that Ariq and Zenobia together were hot, the connection between them was tangible and the sex scenes were sensual.

I enjoyed seeing more of the world Meljean Brook has created as well, I love the way it is original, yet familiar as the figures and things we know from history are put slightly off kilter, giving us something new and exciting to explore. The Kraken King had an interesting and intricate plot, and I enjoyed reading not only to see Ariq and Zenobia get togther, but also to see what evil schemes were afoot.

I really enjoyed this book, it had a love story that managed to tug on my heart strings, a plot that kept me engrossed and a world and characters that just keeps getting richer the more you read. If you pick up one book this summer, make sure it is The Kraken King.

This is the fifth part at the eight part installment release of the Kraken King. The Kraken King with the 4th book in the Iron Seas series by Brook. I continue to enjoy this series a lot. Although the novellas always feel pretty short.

Zenobia is being held captive by the marauders who attacked Krakentown, while Ariq is forced to help these same men find the weapon Skybreaker. However, Ariq has no intention of showing them where Skybreaker is and is determined to escape and rescue Zenobia. Zenobia is certain Ariq will rescue her, but when she loses that she holds most dear, she decides that she will rescue herself.

This book was back to the action-packed plot of the first two parts. I was so happy to have all of the action back. Watching Ariq and Zenobia deal with their subsequent captures and escapes was exciting and wonderful fun.

Ariq is stunning in his daring and loyalty to Zenobia. He is truly the Kraken King and you see that more in this novella than in any of the previous ones.

Zenobia grows a lot as a character in this book. She’s been kidnapped and held for ransom a number of times, but this time is the last straw. She decides that she needs to rescue herself for once. She is a wonderful heroine; she is a lady and a bit of a dreamer, but she has a core of iron when she has too. I was really impressed with her as a character in this book.

In addition to the exciting action, there are some amazing new sights that Zenobia sees. I was enraptured by the jellyfish air balloon, some of the scenes in this world are just so creative and magical. There were also some exceedingly well done romantic scenes between Ariq and Zenobia, Brook does such a great job with making characters that have great chemistry and are completely engrossing.

Overall this was my favorite installment in this serial book so far. I absolutely loved it. Tons of action, interesting new steampunk creations, and wonderfully engaging characters made this an absolutely engaging read that was over way too fast. I am not a huge fan of the serial novella style here and in the future I will wait to just read the final book when it comes out. However I am really enjoying this story, I just hate having to stop just when I get involved in it again. This whole series is highly recommended to those who love steampunk stories with some romance.

ironship north of Australia; empressess' war airships; the light jellyfish-like lantern fish that formed the balloon part of a very light, very fast balloon flier;

before they are separated, he "...humbled himself before her. He'd let her set on his hand to show everyone that there was nothing he would place above her. It was a gesture meant to show loyalty to a khagan, but by kneeling, by submitting to her foot upon his palm, he declared that she was his queen."

They are separated... she is allowed to walk the ship... and on the 4th night, Baton, with extreme politeness, invites her for tea, burns her papers - her brothers precious letters, and part of her manuscript... and undermines her trust in Ariq, that he would put his town over her...

He bides his time, establishes patterns.. Taka does not think he can escape - and then when there is cloud cover, he kills his 2 guards (who allow him to get too close), throwing them overboard to draw the mechanical sharks, jumps in (feel first, like an arrow), swims to the nearby coast, requests a fast balloon - and makes it back to Zenobia, who had determined she would escape - making a bag with her torn sleeve, and stuffing it with gold coins... she makes her way to the light fliers, and as she is looking for the guard to bop with her bag, realizes he's on the ground... and whaps her husband's arm when he does show up.... but realizes who it is... they disable the fliers, and escape to his flier...

and they have a few days in the balloon... he is determined not to make love to her in such a place, but he does bring her to climax with oral sex kissing... they talk, he realizes she doesn't see him as husband... he explains their vows made them married by this country's standards... and she agrees to stay until all is returned to normal, and he vows to do his best to make her feel for him...

"And it was rather marvelous. Her heart was an overfilled inkwell. She couldn't keep up with the spill. There were words she could write with that ink, phrases that might describe the sensation of his touch or the sound of his voice, but as soon as she captured the right ones they were obliterated by the overflow. No description could capture the joy and pleasure of simply watching him."

Our Review, by LITERAL ADDICTION's Vivacious Valkyrie - Marta:
*Copy gifted in exchange for an honest review

Episode five in this adventure that has this reader absolutely gripped! This stunning tale blends a steampunk world with heart stopping romance and it's a simply fantastic ride! Do not read this without the previous parts as you would be missing out on an awesome journey. Sit back and allow this author to whisk us away to a fantastical land filled with daredevil escapades and monstrous events that will leave the reader breathless .
Zenobia has been separated from Ariq but not before he vowed his heart and soul to her. She's not really sure she can trust his feelings but one thing she does believe is he's a man of honour and if it's possible to rescue her he will. Ariq has no such doubts and is a wily type who will not go quietly. He knows the whereabouts of a war machine the likes of which the world has yet to see but refuses to stand by and quietly watch the world go to blazes. Zenobias very safety is in Ariqs hands but he's a man with a plan and woe betide any who get in his way!

I am loving this series and so wish I'd discovered this author sooner. The world building is fantastic and if honest I don't have enough superlatives to describe just how vibrant it truly is. This particular part is almost in two halves as we have initially the escape plans of both Ariq and Zenobia to follow and then we are treated to a very passionate encounter! Zenobia may not be fully convinced of Ariqs true feelings and intentions but believe me when I say that he's a very persuasive man!

Things are certainly heating up for our intrepid hero and heroine but Zenobias adventure is far from over. The question of evading recapture is playing heavily on their minds but equally what would happen if they succeed is never far from their thoughts. Will Zenobia take her chances and stay with Ariq or return to her brother and the saner world she's used to? Zenobia feels that she's lost so much but sometimes when all is gone the only thing left is hope!

2.5 stars. Rounded down, because I disliked Ariq in this section.

After the romantic and action-filled previous installments -- which I loved -- I have to say that that this was a downer of read for me. I was glad when it ended, because I wanted the unpleasantness to stop.

Rant: /Rant.

The resolution to the marriage mix-up was quick and anti-climactic, too.

So, not a good read for me. So sad!

Edited to add: *See Man of Steel, Woman of Kleenex, as a reference for my comments in above rant.

Joint review of Parts V & VI

For those who loved THE KRAKEN KING AND THE INEVITABLE ABDUCTION, Parts IV and V of THE KRAKEN KING serial keep the action and the passion turned all the way up. Blackmail, hurried marriages, daring escapes and a love match worth savoring, these two portions of the serial show how great THE KRAKEN KING can be.

Part V, THE IRON HEART, now ties THE INEVITABLE ABDUCTION as my favorite of the series, as both Ariq and Zenobia get a chance to exhibit the skills that make them awesome apart and so amazing to imagine together. Even better, Brook’s talent for writing nuanced and fully realized characters extends beyond her hero and heroine to the foes and allies they encounter. Ariq knows the names of the guards he must defeat to escape, and Zenobia faces a foe who is chillingly implacable… and intimately acquainted with Ariq. Everyone has the capacity for surprise and self-interest in this world, and these flaws are as interesting to read as their plans for the future.

While THE IRON HEART is full of action, THE CRUMBLING WALLS slows things down a little bit as politics and intrigue replace daring escapes and blackmail. Luckily, to balance this out, Ariq and Zenobia are covering new ground in their relationship. While it is clear that these pieces will fit together to form an amazing book when finished, the pacing and character development of THE KRAKEN KING has completely won me over to the serial format. Formidably in their own right, I can’t wait to see what Zenobia and Ariq accomplish together.

Sexual Content: Sex scenes.

I'm assuming that if you're reading this, you've read the first 4 parts (but not necessarily this part, so no spoilers for that here).

I was a bit anxious at the end of the last installment, when we had the "inevitable abduction" of the title. Was this going to be the beginning of a long separation? Even though Ariq and Zenobia are good enough characters to be able to keep me interested on their own, the joy of this book has been seeing them interact.

Well, no long separation here, I'm glad to report. Ariq and Zenobia are fabulous separately for a while, but it doesn't take long before they're being fabulous together again. The installment starts with some exciting action (which, very nicely, continues to develop our understanding of the characters) and then we get some lovely quiet moments.

I think what I appreciated the most in this part (and this is something that I've been seeing throughout this serial -and all of this author's books) is just how much deeper than most authors Brook goes with her characterisation. The reactions always go beyond the obvious and mechanical, and tell you exactly who these people are, and that they are interested in looking under the surface of who the other is. It makes the books unpredictable. Certain situations will take place and I, after reading romance for so many years, will automatically expect a particular thing to happen, and it almost never does. And when it does, there will be a little twist, something that will add an extra dimension. It makes Brook's books incredibly satisfying to read.

Ariq is biding his time, waiting for the right moment to rescue Zenobia after she’s taken hostage in exchange for him leading his captors to the Skybreaker. Little does he know Zenobia is done waiting. After a thrilling escape they know one thing is clear, they must stop the men behind their kidnappings before Krakentown becomes a target.

Zenobia awaits Ariq’s rescue, and he’s doing his best to get to her, but the destruction of treasured items pushes her over the edge and she prepares to become her own savior. Her mind, determination, and will are her greatest weapons and she wields each masterfully. Ariq is no slouch. He is battling his enemies while trying to earn Zenobia’s forgiveness and heart and he’s pulling out all the stops.

“…Everything I do is to persuade you to stay. Every time I touch you, every time I look at you, every time I kiss you. Every time I get inside you I won’t stop until you’re crying my name. I intend to brand myself so deep into you that you could write a thousand stories but still not picture life without me…”

Part V of this fun adventure ends with Zenobia and Ariq rushing back to the Red City to convince the Empress there’s a traitor in her court in hopes of stopping an invasion that will destroy Krakentown. Can’t wait to start Park VI.

This part felt longer, a lot more dialogue than the others and some insight into characters that had been mentioned before. Some scenes were heartbreaking and others simply beautiful.
Again Meljean Brook transports you into a magical world, and this time I was introduced to glowing jellyfish, there is a lovely story behind it and the air-balloon.

I could call it a romance, but I think by saying that the love story developing between Zenobia and Ariq is beautifully written. As Zenobia tries to push aside her emotional fears she is definitely a fighter and Ariq could easily be every women's dream come true.

But these two wonderful characters and their beautiful love story is not the only thing that keeps me anxiously waiting every Tuesday for the new series to be available, there is a political plot that I am curious as to how it is going to end and I am truly excited to see what happens when they reach the Red City.

Zenobia is one of the most (realistic) resourceful characters that I have ever read about and if any man did for me what Ariq did for Zenobia I would marry him on the spot.

Another great series and left with so much to look forward to.

Part Five-The Kraken King and the Iron Heart

Tensions run high as Ariq’s past is revealed and we learn the full story in regards to his parentage and the truth behind his moniker. Our lovers find themselves dragged into a political game they have no hope of winning. An unusual declaration proves to all that Zenobia is under the protection of The Kraken King and beware to all who doubt that. When Ariq is forced to leave Zenobia behind in order to save her, Zenobia prays he remembers his promise to come for her. But when Zenobia suffers a terrible loss, she realizes that sometimes, you have to save yourself.

Brook’s brings in the big guns with bold actions and her outrageous imagination to shoves the conflict into high gear, revealing a situation that rocks the very core of the story. The past and the present intertwine, showing Ariq and readers that you can never fully escape your past.

6/10: Good light-weight read, well done.

OK, so the story is good, but the disjointed nature and often short & incomplete instalments detract from the overall enjoyment for me. Which is a shame, because part of me believes I'd rate this serial higher if it wasn't a serial at all.

This time, though, I must say, Zenobia's continued doubts in light of Ariq's continual open bluntness began to annoy. I understood her reluctance to trust, but maybe coupled with the broken reading pattern of a serial it just became a "not again" frustration.

Ariq. What can I say? Determined men just do it for me...

Know this, too: Everything I do is to persuade you to stay. Every time I touch you, every time I look at you, every time I kiss you. Every time I get inside you I won't stop until you're calling my name. I intend to brand myself so deep into you that you could write a thousand stories but still not picture life without me. That is my purpose.

He alone gives me hope a four star rating will appear before the end of all eight instalments in this serial.

I have been loving this series. The characters, world, and plot are all fantastic.

One teeny thing that bothered me in this part though was

That said, I still love this series more than words can say and I'm definitely looking forward to reading next week's part.

Zenobia has been quite blasé about all her kidnappings so far; but she is definitely not going to be a passive spectator for this one. Long distances separate her from Ariq, and familiar doubts creep up.

The Kraken King seems to be more complex-er than the author's previous stories. Not only do we have this convoluted politics between all the Dens, but also those fascinating descriptions of exotic places and practices (Kraken penis, anyone?). I enjoyed the detailed description of the jellyfish balloons and naval ships..

Fav quotes:
Hoping so much was exhausting, like exercising an unused muscle. Had she hoped so infrequently in the past that she couldn’t maintain the effort now? Zenobia didn’t know. But it seemed that hope quickly wore itself out and made room for doubt. No, it didn’t just make room for doubt. It built a pantry, with shelves stuffed full of worries. And Zenobia couldn’t stop herself from nibbling, but those doubts didn’t nourish her or vanish with each bite. They only grew fatter.

Her heart was an overfilled inkwell. She couldn’t keep up with the spill. There were words she could write with that ink, phrases that might describe the sensation of his touch or the sound of his voice, but as soon as she captured the right ones they were obliterated by the overflow. No description could capture the joy and pleasure of simply watching him.

"I will look for you and I will find you" could any word have been truer. in this installment of the karen king we have both Zenobia and Ariq separated. the word ringing true to both but would it happen? We soon come to find out what awaits our two characters and it does not disappoint.

I don't know what is more tortuous waiting for a whole year for more or the anticipation that in a matter of days you get to have another short snapshot. this story does not disappoint. I lo e the word building and anticipation that it brought me to the forefront of the story. it made me feel like a voyeur but in an nonintrusive way. I can't wait to see what new adventure awaits them. for now I have my own thoughts and ideas of where the story can lead. love it.
