So this is a book based off of a movie, which was based off of a book?
The original book is called Here Be Monsters! I probably should have read that one, I guess. This one sticks close to the movie, but the writing is terrible. I would have given it fewer stars but my kiddo enjoyed it. I'm curious if the original book is as close to the movie?
Very fun with a lot of lessons about self-identity, doing what's right, the abuse of power, and the power of family. Eggs has grown up believing he is one of the ingenious, mechanically adept, below-ground dwelling Boxtrolls. His identity and courage are tested when he first meets evil and has to confront that what he knows about himself and his family--and even the survival of his dear Boxtrolls. Winnie too has to deal with her worldview being corrected, with good being evil and evil being good. I think it was good to have both strong male and female characters one from the "human" side and one from the "Boxtrolls" side. There are plenty of close calls and frustrating no-one-is-listening-to-me moments to keep the tension high. The resolution is worthy of a rousing cheer. This is one of the few movie-to-book pieces that I've read (and I haven't seen the movie) but I have to say the the storytelling holds up well and does seem to capture the cinematic quality, while feeling as full as an original book. It would be a nice schoolroom pairing to read the book then see the movie and discuss them. I enjoyed it as a quick, easy read with a dramatic flair.
It's hard to say what to rate this, because it is a good adaptation, but it becomes redundant reading if you've already seen the movie. And you should see the movie. It properly brings the characters to life and shows the quirkiness of the boxtrolls which the book is only trying to emulate. I suppose it is a good resource for children still getting into the reading game and there are some details Kimmel added which weren't in the movie (which makes me wonder if she made them up or if they were details not able to make in the movie). But for older readers I'd just save the time and watch the movie or read the original book this is all based off of if you're truly interested. Although Here Be Monsters is pretty different from this story it is still a fun read and you see much of the inspiration that was used for Boxtrolls.
The story I read was called “The Boxtrolls” by Elizabeth Cody Kimmel. I would say I liked the book because Eggs is raised like a boxtroll, but sooner finds out that he is the Trashshaw baby. I like the way Snatcher dies because it doesn’t include someone killing him like by gun, knife, etc. The main characters are Eggs, Fish, Winnie, Snatcher, Lord Portly-Rind,Trout, Gristle, Mr.Pickles, and the other boxtrolls. The main conflict is Eggs wanted to get the boxtrolls out of the factory, but he can’t because Snatcher was a problem because he wanted to kill the boxtrolls for a white hat. I would recommend this book to children. One is I think the book is for kids because it does not have anything bad, but adults could read it too because the plot is good.
This book is about two types of "residents" living in one town: humans above ground and Boxtrolls below. When their worlds collide because of one adventurous trip, everything they thought to be true came crashing down.
While this book has a potential to be good, I was pretty disappointed in it because of the way it was written for the targeted age group. Check out my book review blog to see in-depth reasons why I don't recommend it.
I originally picked up this book because it is based on the new movie, which I now cannot wait for! This book has very loveable characters, an evil villain you love to hate, and wonderful life lessons hidden in the pages. Most of the action happens in the last half of the book, so if you are having a hard time getting into this story, stick with it. Its worth it!
"Only a year ago, humans and boxtrolls had been enemies, one hunting the other. Now they lived in harmony, side by side." Anyone who knows me would understand how this line would make the line, hook and sinker for me. Our world suffers through so much hate, and for so little. This story is relatable on all aspects of life, and as younger folks are the future of our world, there is high value for its moral.

I really enjoyed this book. I read it as a precursor to the movie that is coming out based on it. I wanted to read it so I could recommend to my tutor students and also to my daughter who teaches second grade.
This was a good book but it left me confused because of how quickly some parts went back and forth between characters. I was a third of the way through the book before I was sure who was a person and who was a Boxtroll.
I loved this book! Such a quick and imaginative story. I know the book was written for the movie, so I hope they are identical. I would love to see this silly movie and maybe one day watch it with some of my own silly kids. =)
I wish I had a friend that was a box troll! I think their so cutie! But there is a conflict in the story between the box trolls and someone else. But who? And who's Fish, and Egg? Well, are you interested in it now! Check it out.
Very good children's literature. Characters were easy to get attached to. Read the book before you see the movie. You can really relate to their losses and how other friendship helped them to grow and be better as a friend
Entre un complejo y algo exasperante tres del inicio, y un encantador cinco al cierre, he decidido dar un cuatro a Los Boxtrolls. Un gusto reencontrarme con Egg, Fish y Shoe :) Mi última lectura del 2015.
