Biografia księżnej Kate, żony brytyjskiego następcy tronu i ulubienicy Brytyjczyków!
This book is extremely dull. It doesn't reveal anything new or interesting about the Princess of Wales. It drones on and on about the Princess's early years work so many times that I lost count, but it's just repeating the same thing again and again - giving the impression that the author was just trying to reach a word count but didn't have anything else to say. It's very clearly a PR fluff-piece intended to big her up (with plenty of digs at Harry & Meghan) and isn't in any way impartial. It doesn't stick to facts at all, the author very regularly throws in his own opinion. It's so badly written and edited that I struggled to finish it. I had to report numerous text errors (I read it on Kindle, rather than a printed copy) where words were misspelled, missing or typed back-to-back without spacing. The writing quality was more like that of a teenager doing their homework than a professional author or journalist. This book paints the Princess as a perfect saint rather than offering any sort of balanced view. Definitely would not recommend this book to anyone unless you wanted a lesson in how NOT to write a biography.
I neither loved this book, nor really disliked it so gifting 3 stars for the book and 5 stars for the narration (best listened to at 1.3X) by Lucy Scott.
This book feels a little pre-emptive, as Catherine has just recently become the Princess of Wales. For anyone that is familiar with Catherine and William’s story to date, this will read, for the most part, like a regurgitating of many of the news articles, appearances, other authors opinions, etcetera, of things most would already "know" about them. There was nothing new, or not already widely known in this book about Catherine, Princess of Wales. While Jobson repeats some of the stories he covered in the earlier chapters again in later ones, I like that he continues to mention, with proof, that Catherine and William’s marriage is one of love, and that investing in doing the hard work required to have a close and loving family for their children to grow up in is of great importance to them.
We get mentions out of Spare – I am not a fan - with a few side trips into the Harry and Meghan (and Omid Scoby's) sideshow, yet I'm pleased Jobson called some of their spoutings, and those of an online squad, out for what they were. He also makes mention of the harassing, hatred and bullying directed at Catherine via the paparazzi, the press, news outlets, and via social media. No pun intended, but I think he gives the press more of a pass than they deserve. To be fair to Jobson, it feels like he was trying to (?) give Catherine a fair hand, mentioning her strengths and hard won achievements along with areas, choices and moments, that have been deemed less than successful (he also includes much of the salacious gossip spouted about, and around her though which I could have done without.) In the preface to the book, concerning Catherine going public about cancer, it feels like the author is making excuses for Colbert, in my opinion Colbert did not apologise, by expressing regret, for his nastiness directed towards Catherine and William, Rose and her husband, after his smut spiel - he just spouted excuses. Jobson earnt points for me (Chapter 19) with clearly stating where the source of that wholly false rumour, about Rose, came from and it's lack of veracity; and, for penning this: Catherine is not a shrinking violet, not a prig, but a self-assured woman who knows her worth. Her friends insist she is not a jealous person. Today she has transcended any malicious commentary and instead chooses to rise above inane chatter to focus on her family and duty. Catherine accepts her role within the royal family where others have kicked against theirs. She understands it is an honour to serve and she embraces her duties carrying them out with a minimum of fuss, epitomised by her hosting of the Christmas carol concert at Westminster Abbey ......
E invece no. E si vede, purtroppo.
An easy read. Not totally awful but a bit patronising and like lots of articles from Hello! Magazine stitched together with no new insight whatsoever. The Sussex bashing was also in my opinion a bit unnecessary.
I wasn’t going to buy this book because I am not a fan of Jobson but my husband brought it for me as a surprise because he knows how much I adore Princess Catherine and didn’t realize that Jobson has been unkind sometimes to Catherine and too kind to the Sussex duo.
However, as I had it I decided to read it. I must admit it was actually ok. The reason I gave it 3 stars is because I removed a star for not revealing anything new. All the information on the book is already known and written by other people so there were no surprises, especially if you are a fan of Catherine and follow her work.
I also removed a star for not going into more detail about the lies told by the spare and his first wife. Either he shouldn’t have mentioned them at all in this book or as he did so he should have gone harder on the lies that the spare and his wife told which have been proven to be lies. I felt like he was being too cautious.
All in all it was just an average book. I’m glad he tried to at least address some of the critics and lies and so it’s for that reason that I gave it 3 stars.
Jammer.
Okay so this book has me realizing I’ve never actually read a biography, only autobiographies. Still, I was expecting much more depth than I got. This felt like a gathering and listing of other interviews and news articles without much more color added. I was hoping for a better look into the beginning of Kate’s life, pre royal family. I found those small chapters very interesting and left me wanting more before jumping into everyone else in the royal family and her relation to them rather than anything deep about her. In general, I wanted to see a glimpse into her as a person, with just an ounce of vulnerability or personality. This book remained surface level and politically correct. I still actually enjoyed it, mostly because I listened and had a lovely British lady in my ear, but I just think it could’ve been done so much better. The author kept criticizing journalists for only caring about Kate’s outfits, then proceeded to detail her outfits more than anything else. My opinion of Kate really didn’t change and I felt this was way too safe. (I’m now convinced I need to explore other books and the show the crown though???)
This insightful new biography of Catherine, the Princess of Wales, gives readers the chance to learn about Kate’s early life, how she met and fell in love with Prince William and insider details on her life now within the Royal Family. The author of this biography is a veteran Royal correspondent who was able to draw on connections within the royal household and have conversations both on and off the record with various sources to present the world with a revelatory biography that tells the full story of how Catherine, the Princess of Wales, became the woman she is today!
This review is hard to write. I love the Princess of Wales! I went the day of it this books release to purchase it. I even made myself read it slowly to enjoy the first 4 chapters. I found several enjoyable pieces of information I did not know. If someone is reading this to get an overview, most of this book is a great way to get a big picture of the princess life.
However, near the middle of the book is where the author lost me. To me, it felt as if his thoughts on one topic. Events and reports started to me mention repeatedly. This made the book a challenge to finish. I also found the author kept repeating his description of the princess. In the end, the writing style of the author felt as if maybe he was drowning to make it to the end.
In the end, it is a book that will stay in my library as a source of information.
2.5 stars—right in the Middleton with this one. :-)
Kate owes her PR (or canonization) team a big thank you. The book paints her as practically flawless, and while it’s likely true that she’s an exceptional person, the fawning tone can feel over the top. She’s portrayed as the behind-the-scenes superstar holding the royal family together—even if that occasionally means extending an olive branch to Harry and you-know-who and holding her own nose while doing so.
Don’t get me wrong: Kate is great. But the overwhelming praise could have been tempered a bit for a more balanced and realistic portrayal. Additionally, the book doesn’t seem to include much original research, relying heavily on descriptions of photos or widely known news stories we’ve all seen before. It may be an interesting read for fans, but it lacks depth, juice, or fresh insight.
Kate is referred to exclusively as “Catherine” or “Duchess/Princess” throughout the book, with “Kate” only mentioned when describing external incidents involving her name. But again, her story is undoubtedly extraordinary—a modern-day fairy tale of a commoner (a term I dislike for its condescending tone) falling in love with a prince in classic storybook fashion.
She’s portrayed as a dedicated mother and someone who has worked diligently to fulfill her role as a royal figurehead. And yes, it is a job: getting out of bed, preparing for where she’s going, studying up, and looking polished in the perfect outfit—it’s all part of the work. And doing so with a cancer diagnosis makes it all the more admirable.
However, has she leveraged this platform for something truly groundbreaking? Not yet, though perhaps her own experiences, such as her cancer journey, may spark deeper impact in the future. Unfortunately, Harry and Meghan’s ongoing controversies have been an enormous distraction, and it’s hard to ignore how unfair that is to her.
Anyway I’m sure someday Andrew Morton will write the Kate bio we all need.
My rating 3.8 This book was factual and followed a typical biography in laying out Katherine's life in chronological order, showing who she was and what she has done since marrying Prince William. However, most of what was written has been in the news through the years, so wasn't new to anyone who watches the news regularly. The book was neutral, not salacious, in content. It felt like anyone who put in the effort could have written the same book with some effort. If you want to know about her life, worth a read.
Summary: An attractive, clever, and ambitious girl from unexceptional beginnings meets and falls in love with a wealthy prince when they are both college undergraduates. Now, with the British monarchy in transition, Catherine is destined to become the first "commoner Queen” in British history since Anne Hyde, wife of James II.
Since her wedding on April 29th, 2011—and since becoming the Duchess of Cambridge—Catherine has endeared herself to the people of the Britain and America with her extensive travels, with her infectious smile, sense of style, and down-to-earth nature. With her self-deprecation, willingness to laugh at herself, solid work-ethic—along with William’s warmth, and accessibility—this dynamic duo has become the most popular members of the royal family.
As interest in the royals continues to gain legions of new, younger fans, there is increasing interest in the histories and back stories of the principal players in this story. Through the author’s connection with sources both on and off the record within the royal household, this dynamic new biography tells the full story of how Catherine became the woman she is today.
I do love reading about the Royals and especially Catherine. I admire this young woman a lot! I'd say 95% of this book was not anything new to me but still interesting. There were some things I didn't know about, like Queen Elizabeth before she died (I won't share any spoilers if you didn't know) and also a few tidbits on Catherine's family history. That said, the story was mostly told well, but at times the quotes the author shares of what others said felt simplified and not particularly helpful in the topic she was sharing. The author shared the information well, but it also felt a bit "stilted" at times. I also wondered if she was writing as a pro-Catherine fan. I wouldn't want to read an anti-Catherine hate book, but it felt a bit "gushy" at times.
Overall, it is a good book to read if you don't know Catherine's history and are interested.
This is a classic example of a biography that isn't remarkable in any way. I find that there's a huge difference between collecting info from articles and making a book from them, as opposed to collecting those articles, looking into the royal history and other narratives around royals and THEN writing a book about a 40+ year old princess in context to all that. The book does not need scandals or revelations; it needs a soul.
This is a writer's love letter biography to Kate Middleton as Princess of Wales and nothing else.
I was impressed with how far back the story goes. I was also impressed that they didn’t sugar coat everything. They told about the crappy break up William and Catherine went through. They also hit upon the rough time Catherine went through with news and public (same as Megan). The difference is Catherine is a lady and can handle it.
The most reassuring thing about this book is that there are no new stories or leaks. Catherine and William's circle remains as tight as ever. As a fan, I'm glad for them and their family. As a reader, I wish I could walk away with more of who the Princess is. To be fair, the first royal biographer I read was Andrew Morton's Diana: Her True Story, so I don't think I'll ever be happy with the access given in a new royal biography.
Overall, it's a great anthology, any easy reference to speeches, interviews, appearances, and even rumors and speculation. A very good addition to the biography collection for royal fans.
Jobson is Team Charles/Camilla, and he makes sure to sing their praises often, and occasionally at the expense of William (though not a bad word about Kate, which I appreciated). As a Diana fan, his need to dig at her was disappointing in some instances, but he did take great care to point out her strengths as well. I wont say he was fair, as he spent a lot less time on Charles' faults, but she was not a saint and it's in line with Diana's "particular brand of magic".
This book was boring and about as unjuicy as any book about Kate Middleton could possibly be. I know as much about Kate as any other casual royal observer and I didn’t learn one new thing in this entire book. Save your time and read something else. Good audiobook narrator.
