Ruby Rose #2

Resisting Ruby Rose

Rate this book
Still reeling from the heartbreaking events that unfolded on Grissom Island, Ruby Rose is trying to come to terms with the fact that she’s gone from a vigilante in killer shoes to a stone-cold killer. Everyone from her therapist to her smoking-hot boyfriend keeps trying to convince her that she hasn’t crossed over to the dark side, but Ruby isn’t so sure. It doesn’t help that her nemesis, Detective “Mastermind” Martinez, is still out there, waiting for another chance to take her down.

When an alleged CIA agent named Skryker shows up and asks for a meeting, Ruby figures it just means more questions about her case. But he has information of an entirely different nature and a job offer: join an elite force of young assassins, including Skryker’s right-hand guy, Quinn Donovan. Quinn is distractingly charming, handsome—and deadly. Ruby resists becoming a killer again, but as she becomes more ensnared in a web of deceit, no one around her is safe.

*My Thoughts*

Resisting Ruby Rose (The Ruby Rose Series #2) picks up five months after the ending of Killing Ruby Rose. Ruby's journey started with her SWAT father being killed in the line of duty, and a desire to seek justice. She started by going after the so called Filthy Five who have avoided any jail time. What she didn't expect was that someone knew everything about what she was doing and unraveled her perfect plans causing ripple effects that are still being felt.

Ruby is no longer sure that she is a good person, or if she has dived head first into the darkside like her nemesis Detective Martinez. One thing for sure, Ruby's life hasn't gotten any easier, or any duller. She's got people around her like Liam Slater telling her that she's fine, while Martinez is once again setting his sights on destroying everything Ruby has connections to. She's being visited constantly by the police, and when a supposed agent for the CIA shows up with a proposition, Ruby's dreams of a normal life slowly fade away into obscurity.

Ruby's goals have included becoming High School valedictorian and upon graduation, attending Stanford, and perhaps, go further in her relationship with Liam. Not yet a Senior, I will say that without a doubt that Ruby's future is headed in a direction that she couldn't possibly have imagined not 6 months before. Her family's secrets have come out on into the open after the events on Grissom Island, leaving Ruby in a state of confusion, and desperate for answers. She has been separated from the woman who adopted her, District Attorney Jane Rose, who I had previously mentioned as being one of the worse mothers of the year.

Resisting Ruby Rose twists Ruby into so many different emotions that you are left wondering if there is anything going to be left of her when all is said and done. She's been put into a position of doing things that a normal person wouldn't consider, while attempting to continue her relationship with Liam. She's discovered the truth about her parentage, only to be lured once again in the dark side without any hopes of finding a way out.

There are a host of new secondary characters who are introduced in Resisting. One of the characters, Quinn Donovan III, throws her relationship with Liam into deep jeopardy. I am not sure why Quinn was necessary to the storyline, but apparently Ruby was meant for something or someone else. Perhaps it is the authors way of saying that Ruby has gone too far and her only hope now is to embrace her destiny and work with someone who doesn't necessarily have her best interest at heart.

As with Killing Ruby Rose, Resisting leaves an ending that could be considered the end of the series. Perhaps there will be a third installment since there are story lines that Humphries can expand on. I have stayed away from hounding on Ruby's background and the fact that she is apparently a pretty decent marksman having trained with her father for many years. We can't dwell on the impossible, when this is fantasy and not reality. It is pure escapism and for awhile, we either accept the plausibility of the story, or we don't.

This is a solid sequel in a series I can't quite figure out how to describe. It's one part murder mystery, one part espionage thriller, and one part assassins and vigilantes. I think I prefer the first book, but this had a few interesting surprises. Also, it introduced a new character that I really enjoyed, but to avoid spoilers, I won't say which one or why.

I received a free copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.

I read Killing Ruby Rose and I enjoyed it. It wasn't perfect, but it was a fun and thrilling mystery. Resisting Ruby Rose was NOT a fun and thrilling mystery. It was what one would get if they mashed together YA Romance and the movie series Spy Kids. (I hated those movies, so that didn't help my love for this book any more.)

The first book in this series was by no means extremely realistic, but it was realistic enough that I could see the plot being on a show like Law and Order or something like that. This book did not even meet that standard, and that was one of my major issues with it. It introduces a secret agency that hires teens as agents. Perhaps that would not have annoyed me if it was not so different than what the first book was; a nice little crime thriller. It came off as cheesy and unbelievable.

Secondly, I hated what this book did to the character of Liam, especially because I liked him in the first book a lot. In this book, he was completely reinvented to be a power hungry jerk who is quite awful to Ruby and prety much the polar opposite of the charming and misunderstood guy that I came to appreciate in Killing Ruby Rose. While I liked that the author made the decision to show that not all relationships last (In YA, the myth that almost everyone finds their true wuv on the first try seems to be perpetuated a lot and that bugs me) I didn't like that in order to show that they gave Liam such an awful personality. (And if I remember correctly, an awful haircut as well. Blegh)

Remember Ruby's shoe fetish from the first book? Well it's back. And mentioned at inappropriate times once again. Like, she'll see a villain in the book and then admire his expensive shoes. This angered me in the first book, and it angered me in the second book too. Ruby makes a lot of weird comments that just should not fly in the real world, in fact. She judges one character for having kiled eleven people, and yet she is nearing that number of people killed herself. Yeah, I didn't like Ruby all that much in this book.

Laslty, the romance with her and Quinn happened so fast. He's holding a GUN to her boyrfriend, and she is thinking about how he looks kind of "sexy" while doing it. Who. Does. That. Honestly, I kind of gave up on this book after reading that line. There is so much wrong with that line of thought. Any chance of me liking Quby or whatever their ship name would be went out the window with that scene.

This was a disappointing sequel to say the least. I will not be continuing with the series, no matter how much I liked the first one, because I have a feeling that after this book, the series will have gone down hill.

I won a copy from Goodreads First Reads.

I'm going to tell you that this one is absolutely delightful. Now, it may had been a while since I read it (because I was going crazy this week), but I can tell you that it is good. For fans of Ally Carter, especially. I know that we are all feeling a bit low after that last book was published. And I'm going to say that this one can fill in that feeling...

Because Quinn is a hottie. He has loads of chemistry with the main character (Ruby Rose), and he is a much more mysterious person than Ruby Rose's boyfriend. I'm going to ignore the fact that he is an assassin, but... There are some really good moments and pieces of dialogue with Ruby Rose and Quinn. Really good ones. Did I mention that he is a great character and such a good change from Liam (Ruby Rose's boyfriend)?

Anyway, the plot goes by really fast. Even though the book is about two to three hundred pages long, it isn't so bad. After all, I really didn't want the book to end, because of how delicious it was. Every bite was (or could be) perfect. There were some sore spots, but it was clear that the author did improve from the last book (Killing Ruby Rose).

Ruby Rose is an excellent character, too. She opens up more in this book than the previous one. I have to admit that it is kind of expected, but it is still surprising to see her... Shut in some parts. (No spoilers, remember?). But yes, there are ups and downs of her character. Sometimes, she sees very well. Other times... Not so well. (That is where I call out how the plot drives the characters and events to new direction. Basically, the plot talks and everything else shuts up). Anyway, Ruby Rose proves to be kicking and alive. Even when she is weak, she is strong. (Although, a little bit too... unbelievable, but I'll ignore it. Cough, cough. I'm not impressed by how little a girl needs to train to kick someone's butt. Cough, cough).

The ending! Don't get me started on that ending! It is a subtle cliffhanger! Maybe not so subtle, but! It is... AHHHH!

Overall, Resisting Ruby Rose is a great book. I'm looking forward to see its sequel (oh, yes. Don't tell me there isn't one, or else I will start banging on the keyboard). There is a ton of action and raw chemistry between its pages.

(And as I write/type this, I think I'm having a fever... Flu season is really killing me).

Such a gripping thriller that I couldn't put down. Here I thought Ruby was safe and all was well. But how wrong I was. In Resisting, she's met with new problems and the stakes are raised even higher. I loved the romantic tension in this book as well. Such a great series by such an incredibly talented author.

I did not enjoy it quite as much as the first book but it was still pretty good and a great Sequel. I enjoyed the kick butt characters and the plot and I grew to adore Quinn. Another guy drove me crazy in this one though. He needs to sort out his priorities. I just wanted to smack him. How can people change so much so fast. I really liked him in book one bit not in this one. He has serious problems now. I wonder if there are going to be anymore books. It still felt pretty openended. And I would like to see the rest of it play out. I recommend this book. If you've read book one I'd definitly pick up this one.:)

Cross Paris Hilton with La Femme Nikita — spoiled teenage brat with killer skills — and you’ve got Ruby Rose. Unfortunately, “Resisting Ruby Rose” brings out the worst qualities of both. It’s “okay,” but . . .

That’s not to say that others won’t find it entertaining. This is strictly YA. I do think the author pretty accurately presented teen angst (Reminded me a lot of the five I put up with ;-) ), but that doesn’t make for likable characters. Ruby is too much like Paris, while Quinn is too full of himself, and Liam is just disappointing. And these are the “heroes”?

I know a book is in trouble when I keep looking to see how many pages are left.

It was an easy listen but best not think about it too hard. It's intended to be a high teen drama spy thriller / mystery romp. Leave it at that and it's enjoyable. If you let yourself think to far beyond the fantasy and the unnuanced character development, especially of the male character, it loses some of its shine.

I really enjoyed Book #1, and this book continues in a similar fashion, but with more angst. Ruby does not seem to grow as a person or character. There is a lot of potential in this character and series; I wish this had lived up to it.

Killing Ruby Rose was a really fun thriller, and I was so excited to get the opportunity to read more about Ruby Rose and her crazy life. Including her gigantic shoe collection! And Resisting Ruby Rose really did not disappoint in any way. It was an excellent continuation of Ruby's story that had me on the edge of my seat pretty much the entire time.

At the end of Killing Ruby Rose, Ruby is safe and finally getting the chance to (maybe) live a (somewhat) normal life. The bad guy is gone, she's got a great boyfriend and a best friend, and a mother-figure who knows what most of Ruby's hangups are. She's still got to deal with the huge secret she had dropped on her, but she's kind of getting there. All she needs is time. But of course, time is what she doesn't get. Resisting Ruby Rose takes all of the stakes from Killing Ruby Rose and makes them SO much higher. The bad guys are more dangerous, the good guys are maybe not-so-good, and the people around her are in even worse danger than before.

I did think it was kind of interesting, and maybe a little weird, that Skryker just all of a sudden lets Ruby in to his super secret group of teenage spies, without whisking her away for training or a debriefing or anything. Also, that Ruby accepted with as little knowledge of all parties involved as she had. Ruby is supposed to be smart, but she makes very impulsive decisions sometimes that can get her into a whole messload of trouble.

And of course we have SO MUCH romantic tension in this book. I liked Liam in Killing Ruby Rose, and I was really happy for Ruby to have found someone who she can trust as much as she trusts Liam, and who makes her feel like she can be more than just a killer. But then Liam has this great idea that Ruby doesn't even want to go along with, and they both end up in trouble (along with a couple of their friends), and after this giant fiasco, Liam all of a sudden no longer understands Ruby's abandonment issues and other problems? He really thinks she would run off with the first attractive guy who comes along? I really would have given Ruby so much more credit than that. I thought Liam and Ruby were great together, but apparently he's kind of an idiot.

I didn't really like Quinn very much, because I was still upset by the fact that Liam has turned into this raging idiot, but after getting to know him as Ruby gets to know him, I could see how he's better for her than Liam. I'm still not entirely sure who Ruby will ultimately choose, but I kind of hope she's over Liam and his stupidity.

Overall, I think this book was even better than Killing Ruby Rose. It's fast-paced, intense, full of romantic tension, and all kinds of other great stuff that a thriller should have. I enjoyed meeting new characters and getting to know old ones better, and I hope that there's a third book in this series so that we can see what happens to Ruby next! I mean, I hope it doesn't get any worse for her, but I want to see where all of these relationships end up in her life (not just the romantic ones). I'd definitely recommend this book to anyone who has read Killing Ruby Rose, and I'd recommend this series to anyone looking for a contemporary, realistic YA thriller. A 4/5!

Shoe-loving teen sleuth/vigilante Ruby Rose is back for a new adventure. It’s been some time since the ending of Killing Ruby Rose. Ruby is recovering from both physical and emotional wounds. She bravely ran into a knife to thwart a madman, but he managed to escape. Ruby is also trying to assimilate the shocking truths that she uncovered.

Ruby hasn't been speaking much to anyone lately. This changes when the CIA reaches out to her. They've been looking for the guy who put Ruby in dire situations in the previous book. A particular agent, Skryker (that's not a misspelling) keeps Ruby updated on the investigation. He also seems to have ulterior motives. Ruby doesn't have much chance to think about Skryker's info after her mother, Jane, suffers a strange accident. At the hospital, Ruby crosses paths with Quin, a guy she finds intriguing and handsome. She isn't too thrilled when she learns Quin is there on behalf of Skryker.

Detective Martinez, Ruby's nemesis, catches up to her soon after. She was taking some time away with her maybe-boyfriend Liam and their friends Alana and Chase. At first it seemed like Liam and Ruby would end up together. They were attracted to each other from the moment they met. Ruby's fight with Detective Martinez complicates things. Liam starts growing resentful toward Ruby. This worsens when Quin makes himself a bigger presence. I wasn't expecting him to have a major role in the book, so that surprised me. Quin becomes a bigger and bigger wedge in Liam and Ruby's relationship. I eagerly kept reading to see where things would go.

The CIA spends a good deal of time and effort to recruit Ruby. They want her to be part of a special ops team. It seemed strange even though Ruby is a skilled combatant and strategist. It's not until later that the reason for the CIA's interest in Ruby is revealed. She ends up joining forces with them to catch Detective Martinez. To everyone's shock, Liam is involved as well. Is he joining the special ops team too? Liam is just a regular guy...or is he?

It soon becomes clear that Liam has changed a lot. He almost seems like a different character. I thought Liam would be there to support Ruby rather than try to be like her or one-up her. It reaches a climax during the final confrontation in the book. Ruby's team executes a plan to catch Detective Martinez once and for all. Of course, all hell breaks loose. A person close to Ruby meets their demise. While she's distracted, Liam makes a terrible choice. It leaves Ruby reeling. Liam did it in his haste to prove himself. I couldn't believe what he did.

This second entry in the Ruby Rose series ups the ante over the predecessor. It felt more fast-paced and thrilling. I also liked how Ruby’s personality develops over the course of the two books. She is definitely not a cookie-cutter character. In contrast, Liam’s story arc is quite shocking. I was not expecting him to take the path he chooses. And the final fight! It was more thrilling than the one in the first book. If you enjoy suspenseful, action-packed mysteries, you’ll enjoy Resisting Ruby Rose. It’s phenomenal.

My rating: ★★★★ 1/2

I was mixed on the first book and liked this one better. Ruby's life is still pretty crazy and she still doesn't have the greatest adult role models but I liked that in this book, she was around other people more so we got to see more of her interactions. Something happens with her mom that makes me hopeful that their relationship can be salvaged in the future.

There is a new love interest introduced (Quinn) and Ruby is attracted to him right away. She's not sure if she can trust him, though. I personally liked Quinn better than Liam and wasn't sure which one she would end up with in the end. Like book one, this one moves quickly and there are twists and turns that kept me turning the pages to see what would happen next. Ruby learns some things about herself by the end and has resolution to a major issue for her. It will be interesting to see if there's another book in this series. The ending was satisfactory and I felt like there were a few remaining questions but nothing burning. If there is more, I would be interested to see the direction Ruby takes next!

There is different content in this one than the last one so I would recommend this series to more mature YA readers. There is quite a bit of sexual tension and kissing, some of which is pretty intense.

I received a copy of this book to review. My opinion is 100% my own.

I received a free digital copy for review:

I love Ruby. She is a good-hearted, sassy, kick-butt girl. She's not perfect and makes mistakes. Her motivations are pure, but her crazy life gets in the way. She is still trying to figure out what her future holds and who she wants to be.

It's interesting seeing how all the different characters evolve from the first story: her mother, Ruby, Silver, and Liam. The book is fast paced and at times gritty.

I'm sure Quinn is supposed to be Mr. Smooth, gorgeous, yet untrustworthy on the surface with supposed true feelings for Ruby. There's no way I could ever trust him after everything we see, so I hate to see Ruby do so.

Things I would like to see in the next book:
1. Less of her "best" friend Alana...Ruby needs to move on to a new friend.
2. Ruby should have a new love interest. She went from "innocent" Liam to Quinn (fast/slick/liar liar pants on fire). She learned something from both of them, but she needs someone in-between. She doesn't need to accept someone who is "broken".
3. Ruby's relationships with each of her parents should grow and mature.

Another wild ride for Ruby Rose. I read this book in 24 hour period, I couldn't put it down. It was fast-moving, intense, full of action, and wild twists and turns. This book starts fast, lets you catch your breath sometimes, but then picks right back up and does not stop until the end. Ruby has some tough choices to make, as everyone around her is effected by her choices, good or bad. Her relationship with Liam is on the rocks, thanks to the mysterious Quinn, and other reasons. :) Martinez is still on the loose and when Ruby's mom is hurt, Ruby knows he will stop at nothing until he gets what he wants.

I love how Jessie write Ruby. She is a great character with a love of danger, shoes, and nicely dressed boys. I liked how Ruby's relationship with Silver is handled. I can't wait for the next book to see what happens to these characters, especially Liam, I worry about him. Great job, Jessie!

4 out of 5 stars. This is book 2 of the Ruby Rose series, the first book Killing Ruby Rose was released in May, you will need to have read the first one to appreciate (and understand) what is happening in this book.

Ruby Rose enjoys catching bad guys. It was just another day in great shoes until Grissom Island. Now she has killed a person and her therapist continues to insist that she is not a killer. Detective Martinez is still looking for a chance to take her down and all Ruby wants to do is go back to the way things were. In waltzes Skryker. He is an agent in a secret organization that would like to recruit Ruby’s special skills. She could become a young spy and assassin, but can Ruby resist becoming a killer again? Who can she trust? Who can she protect?

Resisting Ruby Rose is the second book in this YA thriller series. The action is fast paced and although events from the first book (such as the killing at Grissom Island) are referenced throughout the story, Humphries does not spend a great amount of time reviewing the details. Reading the first book may make this second volume more enjoyable, but skipping to the second book should not cause the reader any undue confusion. Although the main character is a teenage girl, the story will appeal to male and female readers alike. A strong second book and I can’t wait for the next installment.

Between fierce love and psychopathic killers, the life of Ruby Rose is hardly under her control. When her mother's office is blown up, it leaves her in critical condition. Ruby is scared for her mother's life, but not sure if she' steady to let her back in. When she's invited to a resort, she's hesitant to go because of her mother. She goes anyway, but shortly after their arrival she sees Charlie Le'maurque, the murderer she shot in the head. They figure out the resort was a set-up and make a run for it. When Chase gets shot, Alana goes into shock and shuts Ruby out completely. Liam quickly embraces the dark side of himself and turns into a killer. He breaks up with Ruby and later shoots Martinez, the man that Ruby has been wanting revenge on. She hates him for it, but has other problems as Martinez's daughter has been shot in the process. The girl recovers at a hospital, and everyone Ruby cares about is safe... For now. I thought this book was interesting and thrilling. I never knew what was going to happen next and it is enthralling to see how the characters and their relationships with each other change throughout the book.

Received an ARC through Net Galley in exchange for an unbiased review

Ruby Rose is a great character. She is a mix of Cher from Clueless and Veronica Mars. This is the second book in the series, and you really have to read the first (also a great read) to get the full story. This time Ruby's "family" and friends are under threat from several sides, and the action comes fast and furious as we are reunited with favorite characters from the first book and a few new faces. I love how Ruby never knows who she can trust because it makes the story suspenseful enough to keep me interested until the end. This is a book I will add to my classroom library and recommend to my suspense/mystery readers and my fans of the Alex Rider series. Language and sensuality make this appropriate for the high school crowd, but it is a book that adults can enjoy as well.

Great Follow Up

Word to the wise: don't listen to this on audiobook. I made the mistake of listening to the first 60% of this book on audiobook and the narrator drove me nuts. She made Ruby sound like a ditz and the tone made her completely unlikeable. After I read the rest of it, I could actually take Ruby seriously again and with that the rest of the story. Don't get me wrong, Ruby has some extremely unlikeable character traits, but don't most female leads? What Ruby does have going for her is that she's a smart, capable, and formidable opponent to all of the alpha males in her life and she's vulnerable enough to make her plight believable to the reader. It makes for a fun read with enough depth to keep you interested. I'll keep my eyes peeled for the next one in the series.

I actually enjoyed this book better than the first. The first half of this one is less about Ruby being a bad-ass, and more about what being a bad-ass and having killed people has done to her. I liked getting deeper into Ruby's character in this book.

Of course, there's still plenty of action, as Ruby and Liam get pulled into an organization of elite young assassins, and Martinez continues to come after Ruby and what's left of her family.

Quinn is an intriguing and fun new character, and I loved getting to know Damon Silver, Ruby's biological father, better, too. As with the first book, there's room for a sequel without leaving the reader hanging. I will be looking forward to that third book if it comes.

I want to say thank you to Amazon's Childeren's Publishing and Netgalley for letting me read this book. This was a fast pace squel for me. That kept me wanting more and more until it was over. I really love this series and the author never fails to amaze me. I can't wait for the next book. So what may be rate it 3 stars was it started off fast pace and it kept going. For me it didn't give me time to soak up the details I wanted to know. I also thought the main character was a little annoying. I couldn't really connect to her on the level that I like to do with the characters I read about. Overall amazing book really great sequel loved it. I can't wait for more.

I read the first Ruby Rose book in April as my Kindle first choice and gave it 4 stars. I liked the second Ruby Rose book a little less. In the first book, Ruby was hunting serial killers, balancing high school and friends, it came off as over the top but she had a purpose. I didn't feel Ruby had any purpose in book two. Her motives were very vengeful and she just ended up alienating everyone around her. I thought it was weird for her to drop Liam so quick and run to Quinn. Also, I found it hard to keep track of all the male father figures in her life, good or bad there's like four guys around her acting like they know what's best for her.

Great Series!
This is a great series; Resisting Ruby Rose is the second book in the Ruby Rose series. It is best if you read the first book in the series before reading this one. Ruby is trying to come to terms that she has turned into a killer. An alleged CIA agent named Skryker asks Ruby to join his team of young assassins. This book is full of mystery and suspense. I am looking forward to reading the next book in this series.

Really, 2.5 stars but it was better than 2.

Ruby Rose can't catch a break. After being forced to kill several people in the first book in the series, Ruby is estranged from her Mother and trying to lay low and recover with the help of her sexy BF, Liam. Evil genius Martinez is somehow still alive and threatening her family, a secret assassin dude is trying to entice Ruby to his employ and Liam is suddenly a jerk. A serious jerk. His arc is what made this less than a fun read for me.

Hang on for another crazy, twisty ride from Jessie Humphries! Ruby Rose is a fun, sassy, tough character who can kick anyone's butt, with designer shoes. There are new characters in this book, new problems, more kissing, same bad guy. Oh. And a few surprises...
This is a fun, intriguing read that was hard to put down.
There is some swearing and sexual tension.

Thanks to netgalley for the read.

Another enjoyable "escape" book...

Yes, my wife picks on me about these books...... but, I really do enjoy them...especially now after two books. It's as if I know the character's personally, and I look forward to "watching" their lives unfold. It has great action once they get rolling.... this was just as I expected it would be...... " my name is Dan and I'm a closet Ruby Rose series fan...Ha)
