Robert Lawrence Stine known as R. L. Stine and Jovial Bob Stine, is an American novelist and writer, well known for targeting younger audiences. Stine, who is often called the Stephen King of children's literature, is the author of dozens of popular horror fiction novellas, including the books in the Goosebumps, Rotten School, Mostly Ghostly, The Nightmare Room and Fear Street series.
R. L. Stine began his writing career when he was nine years old, and today he has achieved the position of the bestselling children's author in history. In the early 1990s, Stine was catapulted to fame when he wrote the unprecedented, bestselling Goosebumps® series, which sold more than 250 million copies and became a worldwide multimedia phenomenon. His other major series, Fear Street, has over 80 million copies sold.
Stine has received numerous awards of recognition, including several Nickelodeon Kids' Choice Awards and Disney Adventures Kids' Choice Awards, and he has been selected by kids as one of their favorite authors in the NEA's Read Across America program. He lives in New York, NY.
I used to own two different DVDs that had almost all of The Nightmare Room episodes, and I wish that series would've kept going because it's far more intense than Goosebumps. Luckily I didn't remember this episode very much, and come to find out, the book and the TV episode are a lot different anyway. (which I wish was the case with Goosebumps) The story here follows friends Tristan, Ray, Rosa and Bella who get invited to their teacher Mr. Moon's Halloween party...but they're the only students invited. Mr. Moon and his wife Angela want to play sick party games to figure out which of the four is a werewolf, so this is basically a "whodunit"-type thing. I had so much fun with this! Although the ending was pretty predictable (along with the events leading up to it), this was a really fun and exciting read. The Halloween vibes weren't as present as I was hoping, but I would recommend this to anyone looking for a short horror read for spooky season.
I never read this one as a kid (though I have owned a copy ever since it was first released), but I watched the TV episode multiple times as a kid. I watched it again recently and found it didn't age well, but I think the book isn't too bad. It's a bit slow and repetitive, but the ending stuck the landing and gave me a chuckle. A spooky-silly Halloween read.
I've actually had Full Moon Fever from The Nightmare Room in my collection for years. But I had no idea that my copy was signed by R.L.Stine. I found this at a local Goodwill. It still has the price tag of $0.59.So that's already a plus going into this book. The story starts off with a group of kids leaving school. There's one kid named Ray that pretends to be a wrestler named Stone Cold Ray ,which I found hilarious because I am a big wrestling fan.We also got Tristan ,Bella and Rosa. They had to stay after school to help their teacher Mr.Moon work on a science project. On the way out this kid stops them and tells them to be careful. It turns out it's Mr Moon's son ,Michael Moon. The kids talk about the series of attacks that's happened around their town and people are saying that it's werewolves. There's literally descriptions of decapitated cats being found ,and that's really messed up on its own.Tristian gets home and he gets a letter in the mail.He opens it up and it Sparks.Inside the letter is an invitation to a Halloween party, but the party is at Mr Moon's house.Tristan's mom talks him into going and just staying for a little while. Then says he can go trick or treating afterwards. We cut to a perspective change and it's Mr Moon talking to his wife and son about this Halloween party. He has his bookshelf that has these buttons and he presses one and it slides these iron bars down over the windows. The middle button locks the doors. He says he doesn't want any kids leaving from this Halloween party.Okay. At school Tristian asks his main three other friends if they got letters invited to this party and they do, but no other kids did. They end up going to the party. At this party we quickly learn that Mr Moon is a little different. He tells the kids after he's locked all the doors and windows that he invited them there to discover which one of them is a werewolf .He plans on having these weird little games that I'm not going to spoil ,but they all have to do with animal parts and it's really gross stuff. You really need to read it.he even studied up on his werewolf lore ,because he brought along some plogs. What are plugs you may ask yourself.Plogs are little hedgehog-like creatures that bite anyone who is suspected to be a werewolf. They came from Bonasia and if you've never heard of them and you know a lot about werewolves ,this was new to me too .I think this is something originally from Stine himself ,which was a fine positive side of this book .I loved the atmosphere of the Halloween season. It's everywhere in this book.Mr moon was really creepy .If I was in this position .I would have probably knocked Mr.Moon out, or tried. I love the fact that this story takes place 90% of just inside Mr Moon's house. It kept me on edge. I also enjoyed the gross out nature of this book and some of that needed to be explained a little bit I think but it kind of does explain itself but you have to put the pieces together yourself . The only thing that I didn't like about this book. I felt like it started to lose a little bit of steam towards the end.But then it kind of picked back up.It's a little clunky but not bad.If I would read this as a kid, this would been easily a favorite of mine and even now it's probably going to go down as one of my favorites in the series.I predicted part of the ending of this and that's not a bad thing. I was kind of hoping that it wouldn't be that but it worked. I would have left it probably at that. but the main twist of this book was something I didn't expect. But it was also not surprising and I'm kind of mixed on that.I thought it was fine I didn't think it was perfect but overall this book is really great. I highly recommend it .I'm going to give it a four out of five stars. I look forward to the TV adaptation of this ,because I'm curious to see how they're going to do some of the gross stuff. I'm curious to see what the werewolves look like .When I eventually rank these books it's going to be very difficult.
This bag of trick or treat candy is quite mixed for me. The premise and some of the events that transpire are quite the treat, whereas the lack of characterization and the cliche'd and predictable plot devices are quite the tricks. (My attempt at humor by way of referencing the cover... you know? Nevermind... I'm lame, I know)
I really like how messed up this book is. There are some dark Goosebumps books out there, but this one takes a bit of different direction, tackling the heavy subject matter of mental health and kidnapping. Not a spoiler, by the way, these ideas present themselves pretty early on. They are the highlight of the story and the part I enjoyed most about it. Unfortunately, this book suffers from even more shallow characters than typical from Stine (how is that even possible?) I didn't even know who the main character was at times because he and his three friends just blended so closely together. This ruined my investment in the story a little. I also predicted the twist about 20 or so pages in, and I was mostly right. The ending is very cliche and something we've seen a hundred times before from Stine. Not a bad book at all, and is pretty dark and mature for being middle grade horror... but is dragged down by a weak foundation surrounding the plot and characters are awfully dry here. The ending, while not terrible, is just too familiar and predictable for me to be able to enjoy it.
Full Moon Halloween Tristan, Ray, Rosa, and Bella are the last ones at school because they missed the late bus (and it’s kind of creepy). The subject of werewolves prowling around the twon come up and the cats’ heads that were found. Then they start to talk about why Mr. Moon picked them to stay after for the science experiment and how he looks like a vampire. The experiment seems to be injecting strange things into bird eggs. As they make their way to the back of the school, they see an announcement about a school party. Their undecided if they should trick or treat this year because their twelve. They decide they might have a party. But then they won’t have time to trick or treat. There’s someone watching them in the hall. It’s Michael Moon (the teacher’s son). Micheal tells them in a whispery voice to be careful,
Rosa and Tristan talk about it afterwards. Was he giving them a warning or was he threatening them? Once in the kitchen, Tristan sees an orange and black envelope addressed to him. When he opens it POPS and black smoke wafts out. It’s a trick envelope that contains a party invitation and it’s from Mr. Moon. Tristan’s mom thinks it’s wonderful. Tristan and Rosa thinks it horrible. Who wants to spend Halloween with a teacher? And they’ll miss out on trick or treating. His mom says just go and they can leave after an hour.
Meanwhile, Mr. Moon and his wife (Angela) prepare for the party. Angela thinks the house is too shabby but Mr. Moon thinks it’s perfect for the party. Mrs. Moon thinks they should the next time around look for a newer house. Micheal isn’t feeling having a party and begs them not to. His father just sends him out for more streamers. After he’s gone Micheal’s parents test out some controls. Bars clang down over the windows and the doors locked. Mr. Moon is pleased. He can’t have the kids escaping.
At school, they all find out they were the only ones that were invited to the party. The other students don’t know anything about the party. They notice Micheal Moon lurking around and then following them. In class, Mr. Moon gives a lesson on the full moon. He keeps looking at Tristan and Ray. They talk about lunatics. They talk about the significantly abundance of crimes during the full moon. They talk about the pull of the moon on the water. He talks about the werewolf attacks. Ray suddenly exclaims his hands are growing fur.
It's a joke, but Mr. Moon freaks and starts to shake. Tristan thinks about this later as he and Ray try on their costumes. He also thinks about how no one they know will be coming to the party. (Tristan is going as a cowboy. Rosa will be going as a mermaid.) On the way to the party, Tristan tells Rosa he has a bad feeling about this night. Bella goes as Cruella De Ville. Ray goes as “Stone Cold Ray” (a wrestler?). A vampire appears from a hedge. He tells them be careful. If they go to that party they won’t return so don’t go. Then the figure disappears into the night. They blow it off and just figure it’s Micheal again. But then why isn’t he at the party?
Bella thinks it’s all an act. Micheal was probably sent there to add to the “suspense”. When they get there the door creaks open and a vampire opens the door. He welcomes them to the house of pain and motions them in. They notice immediately no other kids’ period have been invited and start to ge scared.
Introductions are made. Micheal comes in and weirdly asks his dad if they have to have the party. He dad says yes. They have so many surprises in store. Then he suggests they play a game. It’s a guessing game. They have to stick their hands in a bowl and tell what they think they feel. Tristan goes first. He feels something cold, squishy, and slimy. Then Bella takes her turn. They both guess liver. Angela says their warm. Then Rosa. Then Bella. Micheal doesn’t take a turn. It turns out it’s animal guts. Ray thinks it’s cool. They others think it’s gross. The teacher says one of them likes animal guts a lot because one of them is a werewolf. He says tis going to be an exciting night and then they all hear the docks click. Mr. Moon says one of them is a werewolf and they’re all not leaving until he finds out who it is.
They think it’s a joke, but then Mr. Moon tells them he’s going to keep them there until midnight. He shows them the wire cage where he’s going to hold the werewolf as prisoner. Mr. Moon then suggests another game. When alone they try to escape, but to no avail. They are able tho to reach an operator. She says she can’t help them because one of them is a werewolf. But it’s Angela. Then Mr. Moon finds them and ushers them back to the living room. Tristan wonders why he’s convinced there were wolves. Was it because he and Ray howled in the halls or because he’s seen Bella eat chicken legs?
Mr. Moon then shows them a bunch of werewolf skins. Its’ skins they collected. Once they have them the werewolf is powerless. He tells them they’re going to put on the skins. So, they do even tho the kins are full of bugs and smell horrid. Tristan asks what’s the point and Mr. Moon says he wants to see who looks the most comfortable. Tristan tells him he’s crazy and Mr. Moon tells him never say that again. Angela takes a picture of them all. He makes them all howl. After a moment of this he says he knows who it is.
He thinks it might be either Tristan or Bella. For the next test, Mr. Moon gives them a brown creature called a flog that looks like a porcupine that’s supposed to immediately attack were wolves. Tristan takes it. Then Ray. Bella refuses. It bites Rosa. So, they now think she’s the werewolf. The Moons bring back snacks but it’s animal guts. Mr. Moon forces them all to eat the raw meat. Tristan gags on it but Mr. Moon keeps insisting he likes it. So, he’s wondering what he can do to prove he isn’t the werewolf.
Bella is lapping up the intestines but then vomits it up. Rosa throws her to the floor. Angela goes to get them something to drink. Angela brings them something that looks like blood. Mr. Moon tells them it’s wolfbane. Just as they are about to drink, the doorbell rings. While the Moons are distracted with trick or treaters, they all find a basement where there’s a window. Micheal is down there with them.
They’re soon attacked by the plogs who have escaped but find another doo way. On the other side they hear a pounding but luckily, it’s just a dog. The dog fights off the creatures but then the Moons find them. Before they can call the dog back (who also doesn’t like were wolves) Tristan tells them to let the others go. He’s the were wolf. He hopes that if he lets the others go they can go get help. Rosa then confesses she’s a were wolf too. The tell him to let their friends go but he says first they have to prove there were solves. He then hands them the silver goblets. Then he orders then all to drink. Sure enough, Tristan and Rosa get sick But the Moons say they know they’re faking. The “wolfsbane” is just tomato juice, chocolate, and raisins. Pretty soon the clock strikes twelve. They hear screams from the other room and then discover the cause. Two wear wolves have appeared from nowhere. The wolves see them and prepare to attack with the Mon’s blood on their fangs. As the wolf’s attack, Tristan pulls off one’s head. It’s Mr. Moon. It’s a joke he and Angela play on their favorite students every Halloween. E except their werewolves. Then he says just kidding. Then he lets them go. Angela tries to open the locks but the button comes off. Mr. Moon gets the button back on and tries it. But the control isn’t working. They’re trapped. Tristan changes. Rosa changes. They all look at the others hungrily. Because they disobeyed the curfew there parents set this is the result. They tell the others now that they know they can’t let them out alive.
Police come in with Micheal The Moons point out Tristan and Rosa and tell them their real werewolves and demand the police capture them. Rosa and Tristan prepare to attack. They don’t believe them. The Moons are arrested. Micheal tells them about their little banit. The police ask if they can get home safely. Rosa and Tristan say sure. Bella says she needs protection but the police don’t hear her and close the door.
My Thoughts This was a really good one! I actually wouldn’t change anything about the ending of this one. I didn’t see any of the twist coming. I *did* honestly think the Moon’s were crazy or that somehow *they’d* be the werewolves (because of their names). When Mr. Moon said “Oh and by the way we’re werewolves.” I thought maybe one guess was correct. They could have easily been were=wolves and lured Tristan, Bella, Rosa, and Ray there just to have a little Halloween “treat”. I didn’t see Tristan and Rosa being the ones who were werewolves. Not even when they said they were. I thought they were just making it up. Then the end was really good with Bella and Ray being left there to be devoured and no one believeing the Moons. I really think this might be the best one in the series I’ve read so far.

Viime aikoina minua on alkanut kiinnostamaan, millaisia tarinoita esiteineille kirjoitetaan. Saadakseni hieman paremman käsityksen aiheesta, lainasin kirjastosta neljä kirjaa, joiden kohderyhmää olivat 10–14-vuotiaat varhaisnuoret.
You hold in your hand the key to a shadow world of shivers and screams. Take a step away from the safe, comfortable world you know. Unlock the door to terror. There's always room for one more in...The Nightmare Room.
Mr. Moon is throwing a Halloween party, and Tristan and his best friend Rosa have been invited. How lame! Tristan thinks. He'd rather be trick-or-treating than hanging out with his teacher!
But Mr. Moon's party is far from lame...because he's got a couple of werewolves on the guest list! Can Tristan escape the party? Or will he find himself trapped by a werewolf in The Nightmare Room?
The eccentric, new science teacher was throwing a Halloween party this year and only 4 kids were invited. Weird. Why just the 4 kids? Why would the teacher talk about werewolves on a full moon? Perhaps because Halloween was a on a full moon this year. Was Mr. Moon predicting werewolves on Halloween night?
“Don’t go to the party. If you do, you won’t return.”
If only the kids had listened. At the party, Mr. Moon locks them up in the house and accuses one of them of being a werewolf. We spend the whole time trying to figure out which of the kids was it while they were figuring out a way to escape.
What happened??? What was that..???!?!!? I'm literally scared by the end. That is what is a thrilling ending. I'm speechless. The process was taking a bit long, like it made me think where all this was going on, but... it slapped me right on my face. The ending sucked my soul. I still can't believe. I do understand it's animal instinct, but it's so creepy how they gave them a few extra seconds to run— dude, what???? I GASPED. Moons were super annoying. That party.. I'm still unable to wrap my head around with that mentality behind it. Mr. Moon gave me chills.
This was a strange book. But yet I liked it was well.
It was strange and confusing about what was going on at that party. It was not my favorite book. But they all can't be my favorites.
It is Halloween and they are trying to figure out if they are too old to go trick or treating. Suddenly they are invited to a party. But it is a party or is it something more than it seems? Not everything is as it seems in this book.
I wanted a quick read and remembered my love of R.L. Stine as a child. I now remember why I liked these books but they do not translate well as an adult. I think my children would love this book but there's really no substance to these books. Just a fun walk down memory lane.
Another creepy book from R. L. Stine. I love any story that involves Halloween and this one didn't disappoint me. I wouldn't go as far as this couple went, but gives me an idea for a future Halloween party!!!
I loved reading goosebumps as a kid! I wanted to read this as it’s spooky season. It’s short, spooky and got some twists. I really liked it. While you may guess what’s happening , it’s still got those goosebumps vibes. Ultimately that is what I was hoping for and that’s what I got.
2.5 rounded up. this didn’t quite have the halloween vibes i was looking for or as would be suggested by the cover. the cover is great, the story is mostly just weird.
The goosebumps books that take place in a school setting (or in a teacher’s house, in this case) are always my favourite. This one surprised me and I enjoyed it a lot more than I was expecting to.
This is a fun and quick read about four kids getting invited to one of their teacher’s parties on Halloween. A little scary and silliness happens throughout the book. Parts of the story seemed very unrealistic (for a goosebumps book). If you thought your teachers were odd growing up, just wait until you meet Mr. Moon!
R.L Stine books always take a mad twist towards the end. I would have given this a five star rating, if not for the plotholes: [SPOILER] 1. It is told that Mr. Moon has halloween parties every year where he catches werewolves at midnight when they turn. But every Halloween on the 31st of October isn't a full moon night! 2. The werewolves, as is later revealed in the story, have kept their secret safe from everyone- even their closest friends. But in the end, the friends and the now-turned werewolves are left in Mr. Moon's house alone, and the werewolves are supposedly going to devour them. But the police just arrested Mr. Moon and Angel! Wouldn't it be obvious the "fake" werewolves would have had been at fault if their friends disappeared now?? Crappy job of keeping the secret. Though the ending didn't specify the friends being eaten up. It was ambiguous. So maybe, the werewolves could try to reason with their friends to keep the secret in exchange for their lives(not so sure, for they were really hungry!!)
Tristan, his best friend Rosa, and two other classmates have been invited to a teacher's house on Halloween night, and even though they are warned away by the man's son, the four kids end up trapped in the house until midnight.
First of all, R.L. Stine is *definitely* the king of horror for the elementary and middle-grades set. This book was creeeeeeeeeeepy. That said, what adult is gonna let their kid go to a party at some teacher's house the first year that teacher is at that school, especially if only four kids were invited?
There was a lot of back-and-forth about whether one kid or another was a werewolf (accused by the Moon family) and about whether maybe the Moon family are monsters. The ending wasn't exactly what I was expecting, either... it kept me guessing as to which way it was ultimately going to go.
I would not let my kids read this. Too freaky. It's all about four 12 year olds and werewolves on Halloween. A teacher kidnaps four children on halloween, holds them hostage and tries to find out which one of them is a werewolf.
It's a neat and freaky little Halloween adventure, but it's definitely for the kids, considering it uses gross out gags, overused plot twists, and it's predictable.
