Rate this book
It's Superbad meets Spaceballs in this hilarious extraterrestrial road trip!

Just a few days before prom, Bennett pulls off something he never imagined possible: his dream girl, Sophie, agrees to be his date. Moments afterward, however, he watches Sophie get abducted by aliens in the middle of the New Mexico desert.

Faced with a dateless prom (and likely kidnapping charges), Bennett does the only thing he can think of: he catches a ride into outer space with a band of extraterrestrial musicians to bring her back.

Can he navigate alien concert venues, an extraterrestrial reality show, and the band's outlandish egos to rescue his date in time for the big dance? Fans of King Dork and Winger won't want to miss this!

Short Review: So i grabbed this because the title and cover got me. I had no idea what it was about. And then i read it, and i still not sure what all went down. It was a crazy ride for sure. The scenes where the love interest is being kept was a bit deep. Overall a cute read :D

★★★★★ 5 SPACE-INVADERS STARS !!!

But look. In the past few days, you have become one of the few humans who have definitively learned that not only are you not alone in the universe but there are literally almost an infinite number of options out there. All problems are small, and remarkably solvable.

YES.YES.YES!!!

This book is just a giant disco ball of parties, really. It's an incredible combination of Hitchhiker's Guide To The Galaxy and Scott Pilgrim VS. The World and Almost Famous (and a bit of Paper Towns). This a romantic comedy about a teenage hero and his quest to get his sweetheart back after she got abducted by aliens 5 days before prom. So yes, it's adventurous as much as it's absurd and sarcastic and romantic. Like, OMG. I LOVE THIS BOOK. LOVE. I can't believe not many people have read it like guyss this is SERIOUSLY GOOD!!!

So we get a textbook loser, Bennett Bardo, who wrote a bunch of song no one ever heard, harbored feelings for girl who never acknowledged his existence, and applied to only ONE college and hoped for the best (who the hell does that??)

“My brain is developed.”
“No no, we definitely got a reading that your decision-making skills were subpar.”
“You can’t know that from a scan. I’ve always done great in school.”
“If I remember correctly, our equipment said you only applied to one college. Anybody whose brain was fully developed would never do that kind of thing.”
Impressive technology.

And then we've got effortlessly cool ass chick, Sophie Gilky. A mystery. A muse to possibly every single one of Bennett's unsung songs. A Margo Roth Spiegelman to Q. A Norah to Nick. A Ramona Flowers to Scott Pilgrim. She's an essential part of the equation, and now she's gone. Right in the middle of New Mexico desert, a headlight shone up in the sky and BOOM she was gone.

Right after she promised to be Bennett's date for the upcoming prom this Friday.

So it's up to Bennett now to get her back. And so the journey half way through the universe began. From the belly of a gigantic space beast to Dondoozle, the galaxy's biggest music festival, Bennett would have to do everything in his power to rescue Sophie from alien freaky experiment and take her to the prom in time. If you like an underdog hero, badass heroine, a bunch of fun people, great music and hilarious stuff then this book will never ever disappoint you!

Supporting characters were the main source of power that surged this story forward. The Perfectly Reasonable, aka the one billion sixteenth most popular band in the galaxy, showed up right just in time to scooped Bennett up from the earth soil and on to the rescue of Sophie. I fell in love with their stupid band dramas and snarky comments about eat other. They were hilarious and their unsaid bond was super adorable.

“When you don’t get something you want, give yourself a moment to feel terrible about yourself, and when that’s over, remember that all rejection means is that every other possible path has just opened up to you. It’s freedom.”

You see, this wasn't just about a typical romance but also the rebuilding of courage and friendship through the most awesome thing in life called music. This book has BROMANCE MATERIAL that got me teary eyes and the last 1/3 of the book was probably one of the best literary experience I've ever felt. I got teared up, seriously, with goose bumps and all. It's all about courage and friendship and doing what it takes to see your dreams coming to life. This is quite a big deal.

Things would definitely get more and more interesting as pages go. It might take a while to adjust to the tone and style of the book, just hang in there. The story was unpredictable and absurd as hell. I got hooked right from the first page and finished the book in one setting. Believe me when I say, it has great story, awesome characters and Best. Ending. Ever. This book is absolutely worth it.

There are a lot of things about this one that I loved. I think the best attribute of it is that it is different. Okay, there is a definite formula and I could very easily see this in film, but for YA it’s not the sort of story you’d typically see published. Though, there is one unfortunate borderline trope in it (that I’ll discuss in a bit).

This is such a fun book. There is a touch of romance, but more or less it’s not about it. And I’m glad because the romance was one of the biggest flaws of the novel. The best part was the bits and pieces of dialogue. There are several lines that made me laugh out loud. If you watch any show about aliens-to make fun of said show-this book and you are going to gel.

There were even bits and pieces that sort of reminded me of Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy-one of my favorite books of all time. This one doesn’t hit such of a brilliant note, but it is close.

What I did not like about this book is that sometimes it tried just a bit too hard with the one liners and it showed. And it got to be too much like ludicrous speed. Maybe it would’ve been better in another form of media-I noted from the author’s bio that McCoy has had screen writing experience. It shows. This reads very much like the typical movie you’d see Michael Cera star in back in the day.

That’s who I kept imagining Bennet as anyway, while reading it.

The other problem I had with this book was the girlfriend, Sophie. There were shades of the MPDG (Manic Pixie Dream Girl) trope that I hate here. I do like how the relationship eventually resolved itself, but I do not like the MPDG trope. I wonder if guys feel the same way about women’s presentation of guys in YA. I mean, the stereotypical YA boy is severally unrealistic just like the MPDG, I think the only difference is that the MPDG is more of a distinct trope in some ways-I mean, I imagine all of these girls looking like Zooey Deschanel from New Girl.

Anyway, if you like aliens and want a not so serious romp read this. It’s fun, it’s quirky, and a little out there. Overall, it’s very enjoyable, but not special.

Why do books like this make me feel stuff? Like why. I can read really dark or "sad" books and be fine by the end of it. But when I read something fun and ridiculous, most of the time my emotions are brought out. Now, this book isn't sad. But the ending made me feel sad? Nostalgic? Jealous? Dude, I don't know. Explaining how I feel and why is difficult for me. One might say that my emotions are complicated.

But for real, the ending. It's not even sad! I really liked it. Maybe I'm sad the adventure is over? Fuck. I'm not making sense. I would really like to discuss this with someone.

I am feeling very frustrated with this review.

Onto something else. I thought the sequence of events in this book was out of this world. Everything transitioned perfectly.

It's a nice book to read if you want an intergalactic adventure! It pokes fun at certain things pertaining to teenagers, space, even people you meet in the desert. It's almost spoof-like, but not stupid. But it's not really satire? You have to read it in the right way to get the humor.

This review sucks. I deserve to be abducted by aliens.

One last thing before I drive to New Mexico on a moped to await my fate:

That moment of guilt and self-disappointment when you've stayed up later than you should've reading a book that you probably should've held off on for later.
Of course, it's just a moment.

I'm torn between 4 stars and 5 stars. Lately, all the books I've been reading have felt like 5 stars and then later settled down into 4 stars after I think about them more. If tomorrow I wake up and find that I still think this book was great, I'll raise its rating to 5 stars.

This book was great. I loved the quirky characters and the crazy settings. The ending really wrapped things up and all of the characters in the story seemed to become more well rounded as I read.
I thought that Bennett's point of view was really intriguing and different. He had this cool out look on life and a way of saying things that had me hooked from the beginning.
I don't know music. But I can really connect with the idea of being in love with this thing that you just always want to do and I loved that about Bennett.
He's not the only super epic character though. All of them are equally well thought out and interesting. I'd say this book had an interesting storyline driven by interesting characters and you don't find that often.

Okumak isteyenlere keyifli okumalar diliyorum 😍

Kitap ve müzikle kalın... ✌️✌️✌️

Puanım: 2/5

I love this book!!! it is YA and at first I felt like it was meant for a younger generation and felt silly reading it. It's such a lighthearted read. I couldn't help but smile in several parts. One of the most unique books I've ever read.

Reminiscent of Hitchhikers but in a YA setting. Fun and entertaining but it wasn’t long enough to make enough of an impact. I’m just used to the rich (let’s be honest) ramblings of Douglas Adams.

This was a weird one. I did like it though, but the ending I had issues with. No matter how much he "deserved" to go to Princeton, or how hard he worked once he got there I have an issue with him buying his way in.

I liked the cover, but because it was marketed as a romance I didn't think I was actually gunna like reading it, but it was pleasantly surprising.

For the most part we don't see the romance aspect at all, Sophie is in need of a prom date ever since her ex turned out to be a two-timing scum bucket, Bennet- her neighbor [and the dude who's been crushing on her for years] is lucky enough to be outside when she's having a moment and offers to help. Though he's pretty bad at giving condolences, she decides he'll be her replacement prom date. I mean she asks him to ask her and it's a bit awkward for both parties BUT there is no ill will in it. And then the aliens come and kidnap Sophie and now Bennet is on an adventure with a space band to try and rescue Sophie [his prom date]

Now look, I rated it a 4, but it's really a 3.5 [but if we're gunna follow math we have to round up]. I'm not saying I didn't have fun, I had lots of fun on this adventure, and if you're just here for a good time, then you're gunna get it outta this book. There's just a few small tidbits that rubbed me the wrong way every time they came up and they came up plenty enough for me to get annoyed with reading the book.

I'm going to mention them, and they might hedge into spoiler territory but I don't think they're, so if you want to take your chances on making sure this book is good enough for you then warning SPOILERS AHEAD.

1. Over the course of the book Bennet, internally and externally refers to Sophie as his prom date, like that is some formal title she bears, like it's a huge part of her identity, and it really isn't. It's such a small aspect of their just barely there relationship that it shouldn't warrant so much repetition. She's a human being who just got kidnapped and tagged like an animal, your want to save her [while more tied to the fact he's in love with her] should not be so intrinsically linked to him wanting to get his prom date back. It just feels like she only has worth to him as a date to prom every time he says it and I want to hit him for it.

2. There's also a couple of times where he mentions she's the girl he's "wanted" for so many years like, ok yeah true, you wanted her, but can you please say it in a less materialistic tone? Please, I wanted to put the book down every time I read that line, and sometimes I did put the book down. Heavily. Across the room.

3. This is a big one and I'm gunna split it in a few parts cause it has some spoilers in it

3A. When Sophie is rescued [cause we all knew it was gunna happen, it's not a big spoiler] a love triangle is introduced because Cad hits on her almost immediately after her rescue. I hate love triangles, I hate when they're used in books, they mostly have no reason for existing, they never add to a plot, it's just stupid trash and I wish books would stop. AUTHORS STOP WRITING LOVE TRIANGLES, STOP IT, WE DON'T NEED IT. WE NEVER NEEDED IT.

On that note this is actually my favorite love triangle, because it lasts 2-3 pages. THAT'S IT. It's the shortest one in history [probably] and that's why I love it, I didn't have to suffer through it for the last third of the book [which is better than most of the other books but I still wouldn't have wanted that to be a thing]. Basically Sophie hears Bennet threatening to hurt Cad if he doesn't leave Sophie alone. I can respect Bennet for being honest and saying they weren't dating just going to prom, he admits he likes her but he hasn't actually attempted to romance her, he basically says she's her own free woman who can do whatever she pleases now that she's safe, which is very big on his part. His anger and jealousy towards Cad is not unwarranted, but it comes from a spurn heart not the logical reason behind why he should be furious [which is why I was furious]. It felt like the author was poking fun at love triangles [thank you] and Sophie herself shuts it down by blatantly telling Cad she's not interested in him. You go girl, you tell him to fuck off.

3B. Cad is a 30 year old man [while Sophie and Bennet are just 18, so while legal it is still in my opinion no bueno], and at face value seems like a chill dude, someone you can totally hang with. But it comes out that he hits on anything in a skirt, and has even seduced Driver's [the bands drummer] wife the night Driver and her got married. Cad spent the honeymoon with Driver's wife, which is RUDE AS ALL HELL. Which in a way can be realistic, like your best friend could be a nice person but there's one aspect of them that can make them the biggest asshole in the world and it's just painful to deal with that level of complexity that is humanity. Driver doesn't like him, and my respect and fondness for the guy plummeted, and honestly he was a good person up until that point, he was portrayed as someone who'd help you out. But apparently that was all for his own gain, and that is what real people do, they'll look all nice and kind as they're stabbing you in the back. But I'm not mad that he was a douche, I may not like him much as a character but I can't fault the author for giving the guy some 3-dimensionality.

3C. What I'm actually pissed about is that Cad is hitting on Sophie right after she's been rescued, when she's exhausted and starving and vulnerable [especially emotionally]. That is a level of cruel manipulation of a persons mental and emotional state that is at the same level of a super villain. It's fucked up and he just goes for it, like right off the bat, he's either planned that really well or he's got mad practice doing that. I'm not just mad about trying to use Sophie's trauma to win her favor [and maybe a few other things] but also that this doesn't get a bigger reaction in the book. Like Bennet you're a smart ass kid, what the shit, this isn't just flirting, this is a walking carbon based organism for danger for Sophie, how are you this blinded to the situation. Tell your heart to get it's shit together. I'm mad at this level of attempted manipulation, I'm mad that more people [aliens too] didn't notice the severity of the situation, and I'm mad that it just kinda gets swept under the rug after a few pages.

"Oh it's fine he didn't do nothing and the danger was short lived" bitch that is not the point, I don't care how short lived the danger was I would not trust that dude as far as I could throw him, and we're in space so if I opened a window I could chuck him pretty far from anything and everything. It's really creepy and it did not sit right with me at all and to have it be brushed off as such a small moment makes me feel worse. These things are so hard to spot sometimes [in real life] and they need to be addressed, especially in books. People need to be aware of these kinds of assholes and react accordingly, not just move on as if this old ass guy wasn't just trying to prey on a young woman who's been through some traumatic ass shit in an attempt to get to sleep with her. Where are all the red flags?! Where are the space police!!? I have some serious issues with this.

I don't like that part of the book one bit and it really could have been handled better. Yeah, we get it, he can be a total asshole and lothario, that doesn't mean you treat that as normal! Sure Bennet threatened him but he threatened Cad out of jealousy, not cause he was being a manipulating creeper. Bennet gets no good guy points, Cad is in jail [in my mind at this point], and the author has just a little bit of splainin' to do.

But that's me, I tend to nitpick these kinds of quick scenes. Because when you think about it, it's way worse than those 2-3 pages make it out to be.

This was delightful! The plot could have easily tread into predictable territory but while somethings I predicted it ended in a really refreshing way that was as hilarious and sarcastic as the rest of the book. If you're looking for an adventure that is wacky and laugh out loud funny, definitely check this out!

I have been reading some soul wrenching, gut punching books, not that that's a bad thing but I needed a break (with a capital B). To recover a little and laugh a lot, this book was exactly what I needed. It couldn't have been more right for me if a doctor prescribed it or if a tailor darned it especially for me or if an alien came down and declared that it had seen my future and this book was in it. Well that last bit could be true, especially in The Prom Goers Interstellar Excursion's universe. There was a flailing, yet talented, hormonal teenager...Pretty tame stuff...there was a girl next door crush...ultra normal ....BUT.... There were also alien abductions, LOADS of alien types, tech, vices and an overall Otherness that yanked my attention out of introspection and flung it to places I could never have imagined. I dare say that this particular book has a slight air of Hitchhiker's Guide, which happens to be on my list of all time favs, and I don't think I can come up with praise higher than that.

If you hate cliffhangers, instalove or love triangles and want a break from the norm, or Reality as a whole, this book is your ticket out of the left brain and straight into the right. Enjoy!

Update 2017: Okay I still totally loved this book. There were a few things that bothered me but I choose to ignore them for now lol. But somethings that I wanted to point out that I especially loved were the fact that Bennett writes all these songs about Sophie and she could totally hear them the whole time even tho he thought she couldn't, Idk why that was so funny this time. Also, Walter, I forgot about him and he's too funny. And Fergueson, I totally forgot about him and he's too good even tho he actually isn't any good I just kinda love that he's there.

I LOVED THIS BOOK!!! And everything about it!! There was not a thing I didn't like about this book. And for me that's so rare, normally I have more bad than good to say about a book, even books I love. That's just how good this book was. It was so funny! I loved Bennet and he had a great voice that just made it better. The Perfectly Reasonable was my favorite! I loved them, honestly they were so great. I want a Perfectly Reasonable t-shirt with all my heart! Honestly this book though... it was perfect. And my love for it is Perfectly Reasonable.

This book is pure crack on a stick. Don't believe me? It has a character driving around pretending to be a redneck in a broken down pickup truck waiving crutches out of a window trying to be abducted by aliens. See? CRACK. Do not be fooled by the romantic Moulin Rouge-esque cover. No, this is not a romance. Instead, it is a band road trip book involving aliens, concerts inside the belly of space creatures, and the most death-incurring mall I've ever heard of. If you're looking for a unique book that might appeal to all genders and reading interests, try this one. Even though it isn't anything close to what I normally enjoy reading, I did finish it within 24 hrs and enjoyed the journey.

The prom goer's Interstellar Excursion was like a bad version of The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy. Almost the entire time, the main character was made fun if for his body shape by complete strangers. Another main character is impaled by a pair of drum sticks while exiting the atmosphere of a planet, which given the facts was completely implausible. I really did particular ly like any of these characters except for a talking ram. Overal this book was aggravating and I did not enjoy it.

Teen fans of Hitchhiker's Guide will love this very funny spoof! Bennett's voice is wonderful and I fell hard for the Perfectly Reasonable band ;-) The likeable nerd gets the cool girl AND his songs hit the top of the charts in the universe.

I really liked this one -- it's probably one of the more enjoyable YA books I have read. It's not a profound story, no great questions are asked or answered, and no one will be wondering whether to include it in a collection of the most poetical works of English prose ever committed to paper. But it's a lot of fun.

Bennett Bardo is a kind of outcast loser at his high school. Tall and gangly and awkward, he's obsessed with his beautiful neighbor, Sophie. And when Sophie's prom date flakes on her at the last minute, she amazingly agrees to go to prom with Bennett.

But in between that and the actual dance, Sophie is abducted by aliens. To rescue her, Bennett hitches a ride with an In 'N' Out-loving rock band, the Perfectly Reasonable. Once in the top 10 bands in the galaxy, they've now fallen to just below the 1 billionth most popular mark, but they're in their retrofitted tour bus, the Interstellar Libertine, on their way to be the opening act at Dondoozle, which is the biggest Woodstock/Coachella/Lollapalooza type music festival in the universe.

Lots of adventure happens along the way from beginning to end -- it's kind of like "The Odyssey" and "The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy" had a malformed, dysfuctional rock & roll baby. If any of this sounds like something that would be up your alley, you should definitely check this book out.

Here’s what this book is about:”Just a few days before prom, Bennett pulls off something he never imagined possible: his dream girl, Sophie, agrees to be his date.
Can he navigate alien concert venues, an extraterrestrial reality show, and the band’s outlandish egos to rescue his date in time for the big dance?”

I just finished reading this book and I enjoyed it. I liked the synopsis and I liked the story. I liked how this book was written. This book was a lot of fun to read and very interesting. The pacing of the story was good. I don’t feel like it dragged at all. Every time I picked up this book to read it, I was interested in what was going on and where the story was going. The only thing I didn’t like about this book was the humor. I would describe the humor in this book as being silly. There were some parts that I smiled at but that was about it. I didn’t laugh very much while reading this book.

YA, science fiction/fantasy humor
This book was just a fun ride all the way through and had a very satisfying ending.
All Bennett wants is the girls of his dreams, Sophie, and admission to Princeton University. When he finally gets up the courage to ask Sophie to senior prom, she is abducted by aliens. And so starts a unbelievable funny and genre bending story where Bennett joins forces with the extraterrestrial band "Perfectly Reasonable" to save Sophie, sort of, space vehicle that looks surprisingly, or not, like a VW mimi bus, oh, and there is a talking goat!
What is so great about this book is that it is silly and sophisticated at the same time. It really is more about situations that we find our selves in and how we can be our own worst enemy or we can work to make life better. It was a hoot, even though it was totally unbelievable.
"I'm not even human and I can tell she's way is out of your league." -Ranger
"The weirdness of life sneaks up on you quick." - Skark

I'm a little thrown off by this book. I really can't tell you exactly how I feel about it, but let me go over the highs and lows:
- It's very silly. This book doesn't take itself to seriously and I enjoyed that. Sometimes it confused me or threw me off guard, but it's a doozy.
-Some scenes are kinda gross. Won't go into detail but eugh.
- The story felt like it had weird pacing. The plot just felt rickety at times, I didn't know where it was heading, and some scenes are short-lived while others are drawn out a lot.
- There's some great full-circle phenomena that occur through the story. Like, where something is introduced early on that later comes into play, that sort of thing. I really liked that. It's a sign of mindful storytelling. Every now and then things just sort of click together and tie everything up wonderfully, bringing the story full circle. Which leads me to my last point:
- The book has a great ending. Honestly, it's really kinda perfect.

i love this book! it's fun, hysterical, enjoyable, hard to put down, and unique. The idea and premise are the definition of what imagination should be!! Not to mention author's imagination when he describing places around Universe and its music industry in it. Who knew after all this year, Aliens are not just one species like we thought, and they enjoy life as much as we do!
it's fun and refreshing to read.

The words from the book that resonate with me so much are :

"When you don't get something you want, give yourself a moment to feel terrible about yourself, and when that's over, remember that all rejection means is that every other possible path has just opened up to you. It's freedom." 😊
