I honestly wouldn't recommend this series yet I'm not sure why I keep reading it LOL

Dakota is 19. Her “sister “ Eden is 15. Dakota’s parents died a few years ago and her aunt placed her with a religious cult. The leader of the cult is Eden’s crazy father, who arranged a marriage for Eden to be someone’s 7th bride. When Dakota was younger, she had been tortured at the compound in a form of religious punishment. She escaped and took Eden with her. Eden’s biological brother, Maddox, is sent to retrieve Eden and kill Dakota. So, we have that situation going on. And also, a dangerous gang is after Dakota and companion Logan because of events that occurred in book 2. So, book 3 is full of action. That, and some other side stories are going on.

Only 2 stars for the series as honestly, I felt meh at the end. I remember being absolutely confused when the first book ended. Surely the story couldn't be done? It was like 150 pages? I'm not an author or a publisher and have no working knowledge whatsoever of the book writing world but from my humble opinion - I wish the author had edited and pared down a few scenes and combined books 1-3 into one really great 1st book. The description lead me to believe they'd be surviving in the Everglades during this nuclear fall out but we didn't even GET to the Everglades until the very END of book 3. Now, I know there are more books to come but at this point I'm ready to say goodbye to these characters and I'm no longer interested in where they're going.
The dialogue between characters also often felt unrealistic. Dakota spoke like a textbook and her students sat in rapt attention for the lesson. Overall it was a great idea but unfortunately, by the end of book 3 I'm just not that invested in any of it.

Dakota Sloane continues her desperate struggle to exit the fallout zone that almost led to her death and brought an apocalypse of destruction to continental America.
After escaping the quasi-religious cult led by Solomon Cage, known as the Prophet. Her 'sister' Eden escaped with her, after the Mormon-like Prophet decided to take her for his next wife, but now Eden's brother (and the Prophet's nephew), Maddox - member of the Shepherds, who act as enforcers for Cage - is pursuing her, in order to return Eden to the Prophet and condemn Dakota to a lingering and painful death, as punishment for the 'sin' of thwarting the Prophet.

I don't want to ruin anything, but this is a great twist to the apocalyptic genre with diverse characters, horrifyingly real details, and fantastic writing. Definitely looking forward to finding out what happens next!

Dakota arrived in Bellview Point to find Eden’s foster home engulfed in flames and would have died trying to rescue her if not for Logan. Unfortunately Dakota’s past has finally caught up with her and when she regains consciousness she is horrified to learn that Maddox got to Eden first.
The group are perplexed by the tension between Dakota and Maddox, especially when the latter reveals that not only is he Eden’s biological brother but that Dakota kidnapped Eden and killed his other brother. Despite his revelations, the group’s attempts to prevent Maddox from taking Dakota and Eden at knifepoint end in tragedy.
Fortunately Logan later overpowers Maddox who escapes wounded while Dakota and Eden are aided by Julio. Dakota is forced to come clean to Logan about the Shepherds of Mercy cult and it’s nefarious leader who had set his sights on making Eden his wife despite her tender age. She explains how Ezra took them in following their escape. Logan is initially angry that she hired him without warning him of what lay ahead but the two come to a better understanding following her admission.
With Eden suffering from radiation poisoning and Dakota from the after effects of smoke inhalation, the gang make their way to an emergency medical facility set up at Miami airport for treatment. The government’s slow response to the crisis has led to chaos and looting and their journey to the facility is a treacherous one with the threat of the Blood Outlaw Gang in every corner.
When Eden confesses to Dakota that she told Maddox about Ezra’s bunker, Dakota realises that they must reach the Everglades before Solomon Cage and his men kill Ezra. With the cult already hot on their trail however, will they make it in time?
From the Ashes is the third exhilarating post apocalyptic survival book of the Nuclear Dawn series. The book alternates between Dakota, Logan, Maddox and Eden’s point of view. Once again the author has delivered a well executed, tense and compelling instalment. From the offset I found myself completely immersed in the characters and their predicament. Having fled the hot zone, our protagonists must now face off with the best and the worst aspects of humanity now that society has broken down. The government has been forced to implement martial law and are forcing survivors to go into camps in order to gain some semblance of order. It’s also revealed that the Shepherds of Mercy are responsible for the nuclear attacks.
While the first two books briefly touched upon the backstory of the main characters, I was pleased with the character development in this instalment. The characters have been consistently realistic, flawed, complex and relatable. Several shocking revelations came to light regarding Dakota, her relationship with Eden as well as her reasons for escaping from the compound. We learn that as a teenager, Logan had belonged in a gang as a result of having an absentee father and drug addict mother. Maddox, however, is perhaps the most complex character of all. At times one can’t help sympathising with him and I feel that he still has a key role to play in Dakota and Eden’s fate.
In addition to the character development, I was impressed by the graphically detailed scenes which made it easy to visualise each predicament that our protagonists found themselves in. By the third book it’s easy to become invested in these characters. Each life and death situation seems to have solidified the bond between them.
All in all this was a gritty solid addition to a series with a unique twist in the post apocalyptic survival genre with diverse characters and human resiliency to survive against the odds.

This book had so much filler portions that I almost stopped reading it!
☢️ Logan trying to get out of the Latino stereotype that everyone thinks about, I'm rooting for him. He gave up the alcohol that's a total win for me 👏🏽!
☢️ Dakota you better stop been so stubborn and accept the help, sometimes I want to slap her so bad. Also, start learning some ASL before I start hating you.
☢️ I think Eden hasn't been 10% brainwashed that's why she is questioning Dakota or Maddox actions?
☢️ I get it that Maddox, Dakota and Eden grew up as part of a religious cult. But the author does a little too much writing about religion, God and faith... too much for my taste.

There was far too much filler, and the pacing felt off, but by the end I was invested in the story again so I'll keep going

I'm getting pretty attached to the characters now. It's really interesting how characters can struggle or thrive in life or death situations, and how quickly alliances can be formed. The way this book ended I had to immediately pick up the next one. I feel bad for people who had to wait for the fourth book to come out.

This is the third book in the Nuclear Dawn series of Post-Apocalyptic Survival. Miami is just one of many American major cities that has been targeted by a terrorist group with nuclear bombs. Whole areas of Miami have been completely wiped out and survivors are trying to make their way to any safe zones they can find. With so many cities being hit, the emergency services and army have struggles to get going, especially since many of them have been destroyed in the bombing and its aftermath as well.
Dakota is a young woman who has been trained for such an event, due to what has happened in her past. She is working at a bar, when she realises something is wrong, but is too late to grab her go bag. The first two books in the series tell how she survives the initial blast and helped a small group to survive the initial downfall of deadly radiation fallout. She is impatient to get to her sister, Eden, being looked after by foster parents as Dakota isn’t quite old enough, nor have the steady background and support mechanisms, such as safe housing and a stable employment, to become her sister’s legal guardian.
They had a hard struggle getting through the city, fighting with gangs and other survivors, all searching for supplies and uncontaminated water and food, in which to get by. Dakota, along with Logan and others from the bar, manage to reach her sister, but there is a nasty surprise awaiting her. They may have escaped the hot zone, where the most danger is, but they have all been exposed to too much radiation and need to reach a hospital or the nearest emergency aid they can, or they will all succumb to radiation poisoning.
Eden has let out their safe haven location to Maddox, the son of the prophet responsible for all this carnage. She considers him her brother. Dakota and the others need to reach Ezra’s secret hideout before it is overrun with Dakota’s foes, led by Maddox. Dakota, Eden and her small group of survivors need medical assistance asap as Eden has been exposed to too much radiation. Only problem is that the army have now taken over and the governor has just set up martial law. They are being forced to go into camps full of other survivors, but that isn’t where they want to go, nor will Dakota feel safe.
What will happen to them now, once they escape the gangs and even the army, and whether they will find Ezra and escape the clutches of the Prophet, Maddox and the rest of his group, is yet to be discovered. Each of the books has been an exciting and thrilling read, full of action and intrigue. Each one carries the story of survival just a little bit further and adds to the background of the main characters in her group and that of the bad guys. Some of it may seem a little too far-fetched, but with so many countries having nuclear capability and so many terrorist groups around the world now, this sort of attack is more and more likely.
How you and I would ever survive such an attack, or even know what to do, is what many preppers all over the world have spent their lives preparing for. From Anderson shelters during WWII to bunkers during the Cuba crisis, and some have just carried on these preparations. Most of us are too far removed from being able to survive in the wild, or even without all out modern technology, electricity and other comforts. Most have no idea how to hunt or grow their own food and this story shows you some of the impact of that in such an event as they are in.
Another great story and I can’t wait to see what will come from this author next! The series so far has been realistic in the facts that are portrayed about a nuclear explosion in a major city. What to do and what to watch out for from the aftermath are cleverly discussed by Dakota and you have to hope you never find yourself in any such situation. I received an ARC copy of this book from the author and can’t wait for more in this series or any other by this author. Summary:
Dakota has finally found her sister, but unfortunately s has her brother Maddox. Dakota’s past is revealed form the time she was taken to live in a religious community where she never quite fit in. What she didn’t tell everyone was that she was on the run from Eden’s family because she took her away form them. The horrors Dakota lived through was easily seen on her face, but there was more to the story than she had revealed. Their chances of surviving the nuclear fallout counted as little when they faced danger form not only Maddox, but the gangs running rampant as they see little sings of governmental activity. Dakota is determined to take Eden to to the Glades where they will be safe or so she thinks.
This was a fast paced story that was filling with suspense and action form the very start. Is was sad to see how fast society broke down, but the resiliency to survive was inspiring. I for one can’t wait to find out what happens in the next book in the Nuclear Dawn series.

Summary:
Dakota has finally found her sister, but unfortunately s has her brother Maddox. Dakota’s past is revealed form the time she was taken to live in a religious community where she never quite fit in. What she didn’t tell everyone was that she was on the run from Eden’s family because she took her away form them. The horrors Dakota lived through was easily seen on her face, but there was more to the story than she had revealed. Their chances of surviving the nuclear fallout counted as little when they faced danger form not only Maddox, but the gangs running rampant as they see little sings of governmental activity. Dakota is determined to take Eden to to the Glades where they will be safe or so she thinks.
This was a fast paced story that was filling with suspense and action form the very start. Is was sad to see how fast society broke down, but the resiliency to survive was inspiring. I for one can’t wait to find out what happens in the next book in the Nuclear Dawn series.

From the Ashes: A Post-Apocalyptic Survival Thriller (Nuclear Dawn, Book 3) by Kyla Stone and narrated by Stacey Glemboski is another excellent addition that will have you on the edge-of-your-seat! Recommend for those who are following the series or if you’re looking for a new post-apocalyptic series.
The story continues where the previous book left off. Eden has been rescued and the group is together trying to make it to a safe zone for medical treatment. Only problem? Maddox arrives and causes problems. From there the chaos continues for the group. They do get a brief breather from the craziness when they make it to a government run safe zone, but it’s not for long. We learn more about those responsible for the bombs, the religious cult, Maddox’s past, Eden learns the truth, and Dakota learns to trust. The mass panic and after-effects progress. There’s great character development in this book (better than the previous). It does end in a cliffhanger, but shouldn’t really be a surprise since it’s a five book series. Kyla’s writing is detailed and makes you feel like you are right there in the story with the characters.
The narrator, Stacey Glemboski, did an excellent job. She definitely helps to make the characters stand out and brings them to life.

The action, fighting and survival continues and the characters are trying to learn how to navigate this new world they find themselves in.
In all honestly, I didn’t like it as much as the first book or even the second. It took all the way to 50% for them to finally make it out of the ‘hot zone’ and away from parts of Miami that had been destroyed. For the first half of the book, they continued to fight against gang members that are trying to take over the town and I felt like it again really drug on.
I do like that this is still really working on developing the characters and showing their strengths in improvising in order to survive. They are really learning how to trust each other and work together. In a way they are becoming like family. On the other hand, Dakota, the main female character, continues to risk the lives of the people depending on her in order to save others. And the worst part is she knows they are all suffering from radiation poisoning and in desperate need of distance from the hot zone and in need of medical help. Logan tells her she has a hero complex and she totally does.
The religious cult she grew up in is the ones responsible for what has happened across America and Dakota and her group still have not really gotten around to facing them yet. These characters are very devout in their thinking and I am sure they are going to be difficult to fight against.

Dakota, Logan, Eden, Julio, and Shay just cannot catch a break! While this 3rd installment still has a lot of action, it does slow down a bit, which was actually needed. Everyone is ill from radiation poisoning, and/or injured from various fires, gang run-ins, hostage taking, etc...
So, after a while, they all FINALLY get some much needed medical care, much needed government information, and can begin to plan their trek into the Everglades.
I actually appreciated the, short, breather the author gave the characters. No one can be on point constantly without some down time and these characters sorely needed the brief respite they got - that respite almost causes MORE problems for them, in the long run. NEVER trust a government run facilty to do it's best for the civilians, they simply won't. They'll do what's most convenient for the government.
In any case, the race is STILL on. Dakota may have rescued Eden, but now it's a race to their safe house in the Everglades! Will they make it there before their pasts come back to haunt them?

Reunions have taken place, but not all of them are positive and Dakota, Logan, Julio and Shay aren't out of the woods yet. Not by a long shot. Miami is still reeling in the wake of the nuclear destruction, and Dakota is forced to brave honesty with the people who mean the most to her - even at the risk of alienating those she cares for most in the world.
I like how things seem to be progressing at a natural rate here. People don't change overnight, but they do adjust their behaviour based on the situations they find themselves in as disaster starts to bring out the very best and worst in people. Kyla Stone writes a convincing though not overly sentimental account of the changes and challenges life-threatening situations can bring to individuals from all sorts of backgrounds with their equally diverse systems of belief.
As is the norm in this audiobook series, the narration is excellent and the narrator hit all the right notes. I can't fault her efforts, and the pacing and expression was just right.
The story ends on a cliffhanger, and can't wait to find out what happens next. Roll on, book 4!

This book is a great continuation in the series, full of non-stop action. What's not to love when you have a flawed hero, a kickass heroine, a religious cult, and gangs out to kill everybody who gets in their way?
The author slowly reveals the backstory of the characters in a way that really draws the reader into their lives. When you first meet people, it takes a while to learn more about them and what makes them tick, so this type of character development seems very natural. Along the way, you might even change your mind as to your first impression!
The narrator, Stacey Glemboski, does a great job and really adds a lot to the audiobook version of this book. Her pacing is perfect and keeps the listener's interest.
I look forward to the continuation of this series because I have to know what happens next! Some parts of the series seem to be resolved in this book, but who knows? From the Ashes picks straight up from where Book 2 finished. Dakota, Liam and the gang are still pushing their way through the Miami on their way to Eden as the streets erupt into chaos in the aftermath of the nuclear attack. The one of the story lines is tied up with an even more dangerous threat popping up, putting a loved one at risk. There's plenty going on as gangs run the street, the armed forces and FEMA try to control the evacuees and Maddox is on the loose. Dakota's and Logan's past remains unknown for the most part but there's finally some development, although extremely minimal, in their relationship towards each other. As per the other books, the story ends on a cliffhanger for a fairly big plot point and I'll certainly be jumping straight into Book 4. This is a really entertaining series and while some readers might find it a little slow at times (they're still in the city for most of the book), I've found this has made it more realistic. This was another winner for me by this author.

Kyla Stone weaves another story of post-apocalyptic survival packed with action and tension. We join up once more with Dakota and her group of survivors as they head to find Dakota's sister Eden. This instalment of the series hits the reader right from the start and it hits hard. Straight away we’re thrust into the thick of the action and the tension never lets up. Kyla Stone has proven again with this book that she is one of the best at writing apocalypse fiction. There’s added depth to the characters as they begin to grow into the new world they’re forced to live in. Each is struggling with their inner troubles as well as the obvious dangers of roaming armed gangs and deadly radiation. This is a thoroughly entertaining story of tension and surviving against the odds but also one of possible redemption and learning to trust again when the world lets you down. Highly recommended, I can’t wait to find out what happens next.

Filled with tension, fear and page turning action! The journey continues along with the violence. The gangs are getting bolder with the chaos of the people. Everyone is trying to flee the nuclear fallout, no one is safe. Dakota is focused on finding her sister, Eden. The unthinkable happens first. Maddox has found Eden. Everyone is surprised that Maddox is Eden’s brother, but he uses her to get to Dakota. The group rallies with Dakota. Maddox escapes. Dakota must protect Eden and find her way back to Ezra. They seem to get blocked at every turn either by the chaos of the people or the gangs who are out for revenge. The government even seems to get in their way. Finally, they are on their way to get to Ezra. The continuing story of Dakota is tense, learning to trust, learning to allow others to help and opening herself up to the truth. A great read.

This review is based on the audiobook version. Ms. Stone has packed a lot of action in this third installment in the Nuclear Dawn series that takes off from Dakota’s group finding Erin’s foster home and their encounter with Maddox. Along with Dakota's facing Maddox, a couple of new characters make an appearance as they attempt to protect Erin. Additionally, the gang resurfaces as Dakota’s group is trying to get to the safety of the emergency area at the airport. Needless to say the trip form Erin’s foster home to the airport is fraught with danger and numerous hazards. To say much more about the story might provide a spoiler or two, so I’ll just say this installment was a solid addition to this series. Once again Stacey Glemboski’s narration skills make it a story that is hard to put down.

This is the second apocalyptic series by Kyla Stone after The Last Sanctuary and it is somewhat similar (well, it has the same feel about it!).
It's about a terrorist attack on U.S. soil with catastrophic consequences.
I've already read all the books in this series and the story and characters are quite good but it only follows the story of a group a people without telling us much about the world at large.
Fast pacing and well written I quite enjoyed reading this series but it didn't really make it to four full stars in my opinion.

Add to that the effects of radiation poisoning and a complete break down of society with no amenities and little law and order this story would be gripping enough! However, the author also adds into the mix the evil Maddox who is following Dakota and her sister, determined to kill Dakota and bring Eden back to the cult from which they escaped.
As with all her other books, Kyla Stone creates gritty, fully rounded characters and this makes it a real page turner. Highly recommended.

This series is gaining momentum with each successive book; the narration by Stacey Glembowski is excellent, the characters are growing and changing, the plot thickens.
But mostly the characters become more dimensional, primarily Dakota, Eden, and Logan. This story has held my interest for that reason - and also, the science isn't bad. I'm not sure Dakota would have picked up all the details in her brief time spent with Ezra, but it's part of the story. It's "in the script," as it were.
I have to see how this ends. I know people will die, but the bad guys keep getting worse and there are more good guys being introduced. While this isn't the best post-apocalyptic story I've ever read, it's certainly a good one worth reading.

I have the box set of this series and I've found all the books so far to be engaging, disturbing and yet enjoyable. I like the way the characters interact; how we're not sure who will survive - this builds tension and suspense because nobody is safe.
There are always villains, and the cult side of things is particularly worrying; small minds are extremely dangerous. The cult idea, though, does fall into the warning tales of why humans should think for themselves rather than fall under the spell of liars, narcissists and perverts. It also demonstrates how those in charge, e.g. politicians, are useless and self-serving as always.
I like how the story is unfolding, however, I can only hope the right people live.
Highly recommended.
