Words of wisdom from The Celebrity Whisperer.

If you've watched the popular reality competition, Dancing with the Stars, then you're aware of Derek Hough. He is an extraordinarily gifted dancer and award-winning choreographer. But that's not all he is. Mr. Hough also possesses a virtually preternatural skill for pulling remarkable performances out of skittish famous people. Actors, singers, comedians, athletes - those who, for the most part, got skunked by an agent into signing on - find their fear pretty quickly when tossed a pair of ballroom shoes and told to lace them up. The network knows, of course, that pairing a crew of highly-competitive and devoutly narcissistic professional dancers with a group of insecure, B-list celebrities looking to increase their exposure is a recipe for a delightful amount of melodramatic disaster and there are meltdowns every single week. Yet as the many seasons of this program have unfolded, Derek Hough has emerged as the coach among coaches; the fierce and fiercely-compassionate pro-of-choice to lure your inner butterfly from its imprisoning chrysalis.

It was only a matter of time before Mr. Hough's advisors nudged him toward the writing of this book. The pleasant surprise here is how earnestly he's taken up the challenge. A dancer's chosen mode of expression is bodily movement. The written word is a secondary means of communication for him and, as such, will not convey his ideas as effectively as the one he's made his life's work. He knows this, every dancer knows this, but he gives it his best shot anyway and has produced a perfectly respectable sketch of an autobiography enhanced with motivational strategies that have proven helpful to him over time.

The best way to gain a better acquaintance with Derek Hough is not through reading this book. It's to experience his dancing. That's where (and how) he's going to tell you all you could ever wish to know - and likely knock your socks off in the process.

Of course like any one else in the world, I am familiar with who Derek Hough is. In fact, my one co-worker and I like to talk Dancing with the Stars (DWTS). So I wanted to read this book. First off what I learned but already knew is that Derek is humble, kind, a hard-worker, and talented. In essence, Derek is just like the person you see on television. This is so refreshing. A big part of this comes from his family upbringing. For example there was a quote by his mother that I liked:

"Derek, I don't care what you do. You can be a garageman, a mechanic, a plumber-whatever you want! Just be the best at it."

While this book was a memoir, it was also a guide book or rule book on how to live your life. One lesson at a time. It was nice to read all of the different people share their experience being and working with Derek. Of course, if you are a fan of DWTS and are looking for some juicy gossip, you will be disappointed. This is not that type of book.

So Derek Hough was my favorite dancer on DWTS. I celebrated his mirrorball trophies and watched his talented dancing and choreography. So when I saw his book at B&N, I had to read it! I learned a lot about this phenomenal man. Not only did he share his highlights, but I feel he opened up about his pain, his background, his family upbringing and his path to success. I enjoyed reading about his friendship with his sister, Julianne and with his best friend, Mark Ballas. I appreciate Derek's vulnerability as he talked about his mental struggles and sometimes the anxiety to think more in the future and having a hard time concentrating on the NOW (don't we all?) Reading through Derek's story made me applaud him even more for who he is and what he's accomplished. Thank you Derek for not only "taking the lead" on Live TV but using this book as a mantra for all those wanting to pursue their passions and follow their dreams.

This should have been a great book but instead it's Hough's really dull retelling of his successes, filled with all sorts of bragging and very little insight into himself or his life. Yes, he admits that he's hyper and a bit of a rebel. But he doesn't go into any depth about his upbringing, his Mormonism, his rebellion, his living away from his parents in England at age 11, etc. This guy must have a fascinating story but you won't find it here.

He tries really, really hard to "inspire" with little summaries at the end of each chapter meant to "teach" you something from his life. The problem is that almost all that he says is trite and he hasn't given any depth to stories to back up what he has learned. There are only so many times you can hear him talk about how he was sick or injured, yet somehow pulled through to win the world ballroom championship or win Dancing With the Stars! That's the whole book, over and over.

Looking for anything about his beliefs in Mormonism? You won't find it here. Instead he preaches Eckhart Tolle! Looking for an explanation of how parents can let an 11-year-old boy and 9-year-old girl live in England with unrelated strangers? Nope--other than him saying how devastated he was by his parents divorce he acts like riding the London subway by himself late at night as a little kid is normal! Looking for anything about how he and his sister really get along? You won't find it here--he claims they always love and support each other! (Snore!) Looking for any idea about his sexual experiences or even preferences? You won't find that here either. He doesn't have anything in the book about dating and only makes passing references to thinking some of his teen dance partners were pretty.

In the end it's not inspirational at all. It does prove that a hyperactive rebel who is allowed to live a world away from his parents at age 11 can turn into a success without much education. But I'm not sure that can inspire the average reader.

This little book was a pretty good read, better than I'd actually expected. It was straightforward and plainly written, very appropriate for this story. Derek Hough, for a man not yet 30, is an introspective thinker and that leads him toward his perceptions and how he acts on them. It feels a little peculiar to read the lessons he's learned because at first glance he doesn't appear to be someone who has had time to have learned so many lessons. But he makes a good case for each, and seems totally sincere when he shares them. I enjoyed the book.

5 stars!!! Or actually...10 stars!

I usually read fast enough to enjoy the book and slow enough to absorb and fully understand the content and ideas of the book and what the author has to say.
But this book... It was the first non fictional book I was hardly able to let go once I had finished it.
To say that the book was amazing and truly inspirational is just an understatement, but the strange thing was how connected I felt to it and ...Derek, the author.

During the process of reading it, I developed a beautiful routine; I would read a couple of chapters every night before sleep. I loved it

I'm a huge fan of DWTS and Derek Hough, which is why I read this book. It was surprisingly well written, and interesting, although I would have preferred more "behind the scenes" details, which were lacking.

I was very interested in reading this book when I saw this at a book store. I am a dancer and had known who Derek Hough was. I really look up to all his work he has created and how well of a dancer he is through different varieties of dance. His choreography is exceptional and his creations are so moving. I wanted to learn more about how he became a dancer and what it took for him to be known around the world.

This book is all about how Derek Hough grew up and eventually became one of the top ballroom dancers in the world. This did happen very quickly to Derek. He grew up in Utah with four sisters. His sisters would always be at dance class except for him. One day he tried dance, and eventually fell in love with the sport. He was bullied as a kid and shared many stories of how this made him always feel depressed. It eventually made him skip school and dance classes. His parents did not know at the time and recently found out right before this book came out. It was very moving to read and all the struggles he had faced and changing schools several times because of this. One day something changed, the Ballas family came to his dance studio to teach a class for a period of time. Shirley and Corky Ballas saw something special in Derek. They were world champion ballroom dancers and had won many other titles as well. They offered to have Derek come back to England and train with them. He stayed with the Ballas family in England to add to his dance abilities and train hard to win many titles. They also had a son named Mark, that was about the same age as Derek. He also ballroom danced. They became close, almost like brothers to this day. Derek trained so hard and was dedicated to dance, that he won many titles by training with the Ballas family. It led him have an amazing career on Dancing with the Stars. He wrote a lot in this book about how the show changed him and inspired him to learn more. He was a star and won the show multiple times. His career was skyrocketing, even landed him to be in multiple movies, and earning multiple Emmys. He is an inspiring man and I learned so much by reading this book.

I like how he put in a lot of detail when writing this book and sharing stories that he did not tell that many people about. It showed what kind of man he was and what courage he has. I liked how he showed the struggles he had and made himself out to be just like a regular person, than a star. He also had written inspiring stories and ideas that are so motivational. He also had mini sections from people that have are friends or have worked with him. It showed what an impact he had made on other people's live as well. He is an exceptional writer, dancer, choreographer and person.

I don't have anything bad to say about this book. It makes you want to believe more in yourself and live happily. I wish there was a chapter about how Corky and Shirley made an impact on their lives and how it was like training him. It would have been amazing to read. Hopefully, he will come out with another book to add to all of his new achievements and new experiences he can share. I someday hope to meet Derek Hough. His hard work and dedication payed off. He has created a wonderful name for himself.

I honestly just picked this up to annoy my friend Nikki, who is not the world's biggest Derek Hough fan, and then somehow found myself reading the whole darn thing. There is nothing bad about the book per se - it's just not particularly good, either. It's just the working definition of bland. I don't fault Hough for the lack of depth - I just don't get the sense that he has fully internalized many of the "life lessons" he tries to impart to his readers. Probably only a good choice for die-hard Derek Hough or Dancing With the Stars fans.

As a lifelong fan of ballroom dance, this book was a pleasure to read. But even more so because Derek Hough comes across as a genuinely happy guy and I wanted to learn more about what drives and inspires him.

I would like an updated book with a chapter on Bindi Irwin, because it was clear that partnership fed off positive, unbridled enthusiasm!

Derek has learned the power of NOW (nod to Eckhart Tolle) and the immense joy found in serving others and helping them succeed.

I appreciated the numerous life lessons in this book. My respect for Derek increased tenfold.

This book was fun to read because not only is Derek funny, but I am a dancer so it was easy to relate to all of his dancing stories he shared. This was a quick easy read and I loved all his motivational quotes and life lessons. I enjoyed his positive outlook and how he approaches those around him with love. It also kind of made me want to go sky diving and then go chase after my dreams. I appreciated how honest he was and that he shared some low points and embarrassing moments in his life. Overall it was a fun little read.

Fans of Dancing with the Stars -- this autobiography is for you! Derek Hough describes being bullied as a young child, his natural and adopted families, and his desire to be a dance competitor. His talent and ambition are unique; his positive attitude and creativity overcome many obstacles. Short chapters are followed by his lessons for life, such as excuses hold you back. Where will life take him next? An enjoyable, quick read.

4 stars . Loved the early stories of young Derek growing up in Utah and then London. His relationships with his family and friends and the glimpse into his DWTS partners. Reading it you know why he's a winner. Positive mind set, flexibility and taking charge to overcoming obstacles for himself and his partners. I would love to let him lead me on the dance floor.

I was surprised that he got Kellie Pickler to write the forward; I didn't realize they were so close and thought he would have gotten a family member or coworker. But it was sweet hearing that he would pull audience members onto the stage during commercial breaks and dance with them on DWTS.

I just watched World of Dance yesterday where Derek told a girl who had anxiety to name it, and he named it Anxious Annie, exactly what he told Kellie to do!

I liked reading his thoughts on writing the book in his introduction. He said taking the lead isn't simple, and that isn't the kind of guts it takes to go skydiving but the kind required to figure out where you're going and what it takes to get there. I liked hearing that he was scared to write a book about his life and he didn't know what to say or how to say it.

He says when you seize control of life you're no one's doormat or punching bag and you can't even stand in your own way. I had heard he was bullied and was surprised to hear it was physical and emotional, worse than I thought. But it was inspirational the way he said fear is a great motivator and you can use your fear to propel you forward, and kick your demons to the curb.

I was thinking this book is so short, so it was funny when he said he could write 10 books with everything that's happened in his life but he just chose the ones that made the most impact on him.

I was surprised when he said the Ballases came to his studio because I didn't know he'd grown up with Mark and was taught by Mark's parents. I had heard he lived in London from a young age but didn't know he'd stayed with Mark's family. Their history was crazy! I couldn't believe they hated each other at first.

It was special to learn that Derek introduced Mark to drums and Mark introduced him to metal music. He originally stayed in London for 3 months but then wanted to move back. Mark's partner outgrew him and Derek teasingly suggested that he dance with Julianne, and so they tried out together and were good together. I had never heard that Julianne and Mark were ever partners. Mark is a year younger than Derek and Julianne 3 years younger than Derek.

It was such a cool story that Jennifer Gray tricked him into thinking her back was hurt and she was going to the doctors, to get him to go to a therapist.

I was disappointed that he went off on a bad path after his parents' divorce. He started skipping school, smoking, getting drunk and acting out, things I never would have imagined him doing.

I was shocked that he quit competitive dancing at age 19 and turned to the theater. I didn't know he acted any, and that he didn't dance the whole time before DWTS.

It was cute that Derek would try to get Shirley's mom to say she loved him. He would grab her and say he wasn't going to bed unless she said she loved him back.

I really liked that he said if you want something, ask for it. We're afraid of rejection or embarrassment but leaders aren't afraid to ask for what they need and want. It's respecting yourself and you worth and there's freedom in asking for something instead of waiting and being disappointed that you didn't get it.

I really liked the pictures but wished there were more. They didn't cover enough of his life, but I really liked the ones of him diving the water shirtless. Thank you for those!

I was absolutely shocked that Julianne introduced Derek to DWTS because I thought she got on there way after him, because of him. It was mind-blowing! She was doing a tour after the 3rd season and she told him they needed another guy dancer. I couldn't believe that was on before him and actually got him on the show. He did backup on the tour. She was a pro in season 4 and he came on and did a guest spot where he danced with her for the first time. A producer asked if wanted to join and he turned it down and said it wasn't his thing. I couldn't believe that he didn't want to do it, because he was my favorite on there. Instead he was playing in the band with Mark, and I didn't even know he did music back then.

They called him again and it turned out Mark had auditioned in a video and so they agreed to go on together. I didn't know they came on at the same time! I wish he had wanted to be on the show though, because it seemed like he was just trying it out for the heck of it and that was disappointing.

I empathized with Derek when he first met his partner Jenny Garth at age 22 and she told him he looked 12! That's the story of my life.

It's funny, I thought it would mostly be about Dancing with the Stars, but it didn't even come into the book until over 58% of the way in.

He lost out to Julianne and I didn't even know she had won! But I was glad to hear that he wanted to continue and make a difference in someone's life. It's inspiring how much he put into it, wanting to break the ice and then holding hands to get a physical connection, and then dancing alone and together so they feel the push and pull of a partner. He said there's a lot of embarrassment and cussing, and that's funny. He forms a connection, tries to understand them and how they work, sees things in them that they don't see in themselves. He wanted them to rediscover themselves and show their feminine sides. It's funny when he said he's no therapist and he's just trying to put together a damn routine!

I liked the chart with him explaining all of the dance styles. But when he talked about the rumba he said it gives you permission to get intimate with your partner but it depends on who he's dancing with and his mood that day, which I didn't like because it sounded like he didn't like being close with some of his partners.

I was thrilled that he said the paso doble is his favorite dance because it's mine too! And surprised that he'd never danced the Argentine Tango until his season with Lil' Kim and he had to learn it.

I liked to hear him talk about DWTS. How he tells his partner to listen to the judges' constructive criticism. Sometimes it's just their opinion and he doesn't agree, but it's usually valid and he doesn't want to be too close to the situation or let his ego get in the way.

It's amazing that he was never a choreographer or teacher before the show.

I wouldn't have expected him to talk about exercising and food but he shared some helpful tips. Like how a little exercise is better than nothing and our bodies were made to move. He said water soluble foods like cucumbers and greens give nutrients and energy and lean proteins like chicken are good. I was horrified that acidic foods leads to conditions and diseases. We need alkaline foods to give ourselves a healthy immune system.

I was happy that he included a list of alkaline foods.
Vegetables: beets, broccoli, cauliflower, celery, cucumbers, kale, lettuce, mushrooms, onions, peas, peppers, pumpkin, spinach sprouts, wheatgrass

Fruits: apples, apricots, avocados, bananas, blueberries, cantaloupe, cherries (sour), grapes, melon, lemon, oranges, peaches, pears, pineapple, raspberries, strawberries, watermelon

Protein: Almonds, chestnuts, whey protein powder, tofu

Spices: cinnamon, curry, ginger, mustard, sea salt

I was disappointed that he always sought the prefect dance that would feel just right with his partner, and when it didn't happen he would have tantrums and throw things, as a kid and on DWTS. He seemed so easygoing and positive and easy on his partners do I was surprised he'd act out because of them.

He seemed to think of his partners in a way I don't think the others pros would. He knew they liked different learning styles and some he could be tough with and others wouldn't like it. He knew he had to find a way for them to understand, said great teachers try to get through. He wants them to see what they're capable of.

It was disappointing how he said he didn't use to have patience for those who were depressed or upset, felt they should snap out of it and he would tell them to get over it.

It sucked that he felt Amy was just what he needed after season 17 because he had won back to back and had 5 mirror balls total and wondered what else he could get out of this. He needs to be learning and growing.

It's inspiring the way he compared dancing to snowboarding and memorizing the run in order to get her to understand. I had just read Amy's book recently where she talked about their partnership and that she brought a kid with a disability to the show every week to be in the audience.

It was so cool that an agent reached out to Derek during his DWTS season with Kellie Pickler and told him that Meryl Davis and Charlie would love for him to choreograph their Sochi 2014 ice dance routine. It's cool that he did it because he knew nothing about it. When he practiced with them the 3 had to wear wireless headphones so others couldn't hear the music. They won gold and it was the first time the US won gold in ice dancing, and Derek got to be a part of it!

He was writing this before the spring season would wrap up and he was about to go on tour with Julianne. It was nice to hear that they didn't want a residency in Vegas, but wanted to go where the people were at and travel around to meet them.

It was sweet hearing how close he is with Julianne. He said there's no one else he'd rather be with on the road and they have that sibling connection and respect each other. They don't even need to talk during the dance and he'll just catch her after she jumps.

It was so interesting that someone asked him if it's hard to separate chemistry with the connection to your partner, and he said some partners have come in and said they dreamed about him last night and they just laughed and moved on. He said you don't need real chemistry to carry off the dance and I wondered who he did have real chemistry with!

I liked the question about what happens backstage because we don't get to see that. But there are wardrobe malfunctions and they all have to wear pasties and a woman checks them! The question asking if Len is as grumpy as he seems and if he can understand Bruno is funny. I couldn't believe Derek knew him as a kid in London and Len would blast him on stage and then tell him he loved it backstage. They shouldn't have asked if Carry Ann always cries though...she doesn't always cry, and he stuck up for her, saying good for her for being open. Derek didn't say if he could understand Bruno, said he's crazy and as long as he keeps his shirt on he's good!

I liked the one about how can you bring out the best in your partner, because you can apply that to other areas. He advised to identify something your partner does well, the great qualities they have and build on them. Don't force someone to be who they're not and appreciate what makes them unique.

He knows so much: about life and diet and exercise and lessons to be learned and the best way to live. I just wish this had taken place after his season with Bindi because I wanted so badly to hear his thoughts on her and get a quote from her about it. I hope that goes in the next book!

May 2 pg. 121 Some things are disappointing and there's been some surprises. It's finally gotten to DWTS. He has a lot of inspiration and more self-help tips than I would have expected.
May 3 pg. 189 Loved hearing about DWTS but wish there had been so much more. It felt like a lot was left out and so much more could have been included. Liked the Q&A and hearing some of his answers. But there were some disappointments.

Very interesting. But I have to say that too much of it was somewhat repetitive. He's a young man, and there is only so much life he's led so far. I did like the commentaries from the different DWTS contestants. Towards the end I had to kind of fast forward some. I love the show and Derek is a genuine personality that helps to enjoy it even more.

Inspiring and honest are words that come to mind after reading this book. Enjoyed reading the backstories on Derek's partners and upbringing.

"There are days I want to jump off a cliff. But saying that, even on my bad days, I make a conscious decision to be happy. You have to make that decision every day, many times a day. I want to be happy, so I am."

"Regardless of your religion, I feel like the best way to show your gratitude to those we love and to our creator is by living our lives with passion, purpose, and happiness."

AMEN!

I'm a huge fan of Derek Hough's from Dancing With the Stars. He just seems like a really genuine, awesome person. He's done so many things with his life and goes after every dream. His book is all about his life experiences and at the end of each experience/chapter, he talks about which lessons he learned from that particular experience. I actually didn't finish the book because it was due at the library, but what I read was a fun biography with lots of great life lessons from one of my favorite celebrities!!

I can't believe how much I loved this book! I've seen Derek on DWTS, and I'm not surprised to find him so inspirational. It takes a special kind of person to focus on the positive and bring out the best in other people. He covers everything from conquering your fears to being a leader - even exercise and nutrition. Keep on doing what you're doing, Derek! The world needs more positivity! My only complaint was the book was too short :-)

Taking the Lead

This was an interesting book because it doubled as a book of life experiences as well as a being motivational. Drawing from his personal experiences and his interaction with his family and his dancing partners, Derek intersects and promotes a very positive message, living a balanced life and find unhappiness in perseverance. It will be interesting to see "the rest of his life" unfold before our eyes.

Derek is one of the professional dancers on the show Dancing With The Stars. If you watch the show you will probably like this book. He talks about his childhood years and gives inspirational advice that he has learned along the way. I was a little bored when he talked about each dance competition he had been in. I could have done without the excerpts at the end of each chapter where people in his life talked about what a wonderful guy he is. 3 stars.

It’s an easy read and gives a little insight into this extraordinary individual and how he approaches life with tips on how applying a positive mindset and some leadership principles can go a long way and lead to a fulfilled life.
