"Tara folded and unfolded the pink referral slip. Her fingers made sweat marks on the paper. "I can't be pregnant. I haven't had sex.""

Lisa M. Lilly's heart pounding new novel, "The Awakening," tells the story of one young woman who finds her life at risk over a phenomenon she cannot understand.

Tara Spencer is at a loss. She has recently learned she's pregnant, despite never having had sex. Her fiance breaks up with her, convinced she cheated on him, and even her parents and best friend doubt her story.

But when Cyril Woods, a member of The Brotherhood religious order, claims to believe that Tara is still a virgin, she believes she has finally found understanding.

The Brotherhood sees Tara's child as a possible new messiah-that is, until they learn she is expecting a girl. This revelation convinces them that the child is actually the anti-Christ, and they are determined to prevent Tara from giving birth at any cost.

As the forces aligned against her close in, Tara's only hope for survival is to solve the mystery of her pregnancy. But who is her friend and who is her enemy?

Will Tara find answers before it's too late?

I received a free copy of this book from Audiobook Blast in exchange for an honest review. This is it.

I requested this book because it was categorized as horror with the description being -

A young woman finds herself on the run when a religious cult becomes convinced her mysterious virgin pregnancy represents the first stage of the apocalypse.

My mind first went to Rosemary's Baby. I loved that book so I thought I would love this one. That seemed like a reasonable conclusion but I was wrong. After completing The Awakening, I went to the author's web site and saw that the first two blurbs compare it to The Da Vinci Code. That explains a lot. I hated The Da Vinci Code. I wish I read those blurbs before I requested the free copy. This was, in fact, similar to Dan Brown's novel which explains why I disliked it as much as I did. It just wasn't my thing in any way, shape, or form.

If you enjoy Dan Brown, you may want to check out The Awakening. It has all sorts of bizarre religious conspiracy theories and perhaps sets a record for the most rhetorical questions ever asked by an entire cast of characters concerning those conspiracy theories -

Is it true?
Is it not?
Is it true?
Is it not?
... you get the idea. It reminds me of that skit from Amazon Women on the Moon,

Is it bullshit... or not!?

My two star rating is a reflection of the fact that I never should have been listening to this to begin with. I feel obligated to let everyone know that this is not a horror novel any more than something written by Dan Brown so if you are looking for horror, look elsewhere. This was more of a paranormal thriller. The writing and narration were both professional though; I'll give it that.

Yes, I read my own book! Hundreds of times as I wrote and rewrote it. The Awakening is a thriller about a young woman whose mysterious pregnancy may bring the world its first female messiah -- or trigger the Apolocalypse. You can find it on Amazon for Kindle (or any smartphone, laptop or computer with the free Kindle app) and on Barnes and Noble for the Nook.

I finished this book, but I did not like it. The story revolves around Tara who is pregnant but has never had sex. The first months of her pregnancy are the seven longest months ever and the pregnant/no sex questions or statements are repeated way too many times.

The ending was abrupt and rushed and leaves the reader with a dumb founded look on his face.

The blurb about this book is very misleading. I will not be reading the other books in this series.

I enjoyed this book and enjoyed the approach. I think it is extremely brave to take on a topic such as the 2nd Coming and keep the storyline under control. The central character of Tara was excellent, not only because she came along as twenty something nobody, but also because she had severe doubts about faith. This made it far more enjoyable for reader such as me, a cynic who wants to read this as a character study than a book about being a Christian.

Great things to recommend. Feminine challenge to the Catholic faith...great concept and really should be followed up, the lengths religions will go to protect the status quo and the number of groups obsessed with bible interpretations to suit their own delusions.

Things I'm not so hot on were Tara's willingness to believe in old testament rubbish as a key to interpreting her condition, I thought she would find that harder to accept, despite her seeking solace in anything that supports her condition.

Strangely enough I had more leanings towards Rosemary's Baby (60's horror film) than any religious outcomes in this story, but that's me.

I gave it four out of five, not because of the writing or the story, more because it was more of a leap for a cynical forty something to switch into the head of a confused kid, but still applaud the author for taking it on.

Well-written book. I appreciated that the herione did not do stupid stuff to advace the plot. A lot of research went into the book about the ancient religious beliefs and the the possibility of a new messiah.

First let me say that this is a DNF book. I've given it a chance and I'm at the point that the story is so far fetched with what is going on that I can't read it anymore.

I read this book for the author. I have to admit this is not my normal topic of reading. The story sounded interesting so I gave it a shot.

I am unsure what my own religious beliefs are. The idea of a second messiah coming sounded strange.

In this story Tara claims she doesn't know how she became pregnant and that she was still a virgin. Cyril comes out of no where. He not only believes Tara he gives her a reason for her pregnancy.
Cyril claims there are people out to hurt her and her baby and will protect them. I find it hard to believe that even if Tara's family and friends don't believe her that she would think its a good idea to go off with a stranger.

I think the ending was rushed, nothing was explained. Was her child the new messiah? Did she suddenly remember how the child was conceived and the father? The ending left more questions than answers.

Lisa Lilly is a talented writer, and she tells a good story. I'd give this five stars, but there was a huge problem during a pivotal scene. **Warning** Spoiler Alert. When Cyril has sex with her, there should have been some indication that she was exactly what she says she is, a virgin. Her hymen would have been in place and he would know without a doubt that she was a virgin. None of that played out, which led him to call her a whore and a slut. That whole scene didn't feel right, even though it was a necessary part of the story. If she had lost her hymen some other way, that should have been addressed earlier in the book. Up to that scene, the writing pulled me in. It was fast-paced, believable, and I liked the characters. I'm debating whether or not to read the remainder of the series. It is very well done. However, that scene threw me out of the story, and I couldn't get back in.

This book either didn’t have a professional editor or they weren’t very thorough. Character traits were all over the place, and the pacing was horrific. The plot was far-fetched, but it would have been more interesting and a bit more enjoyable if everything was just consistent. Tara’s hair that was auburn in the beginning was naturally blonde halfway through, her sister went from an 11-year-old that was big from steroids to a tiny 10-year-old, and what started out with a supportive stepfather and accusing mother ended up with a supportive mother and I supporting father. No answers were given to any plot points, just that the series continues.

I hate myself for having read half this book when I should have stopped after the third chapter when I wanted to stop. I pushed myself reading to the middle hoping it would get better but it didn't. I went to this story thinking it was going to be this horror/ thriller type of book, but what I got was a disappointment.
I am too tired to give a full review. I was duped to believe this was going to be something similar to Brown's, DaVinci's Code but in the end, it didn't deliver.

I wouldn't say this book was a horror; more like a paranormal thriller. I enjoyed the first half more than the second, though my interest piqued again with the introduction of Protennoia towards the end. I also liked the focus on a female Messiah or possible antichrist, driving the story, which gave a different slant on religious tropes in genre fiction. Would have liked the ending to be wrapped up more to work as a standalone; I felt the loose ends were geared more towards needing to read the next book(s) in the series.

I truly loved this book. It makes you think how would the world accept a divine pregnancy?!?!? I think this book would make a fabulous movie. Hope the next book is as good as this one!!!

Tara's life is changed forever the day she finds out she is pregnant. It's an impossibility because Tara is a virgin! She has never had sex, not even with her fiance, so how can she be pregnant? That's something she has to find out, but with her parents thinking she is loosing it, her fiance breaking it off because he thinks she cheated on him, strangers trying to kill her and everyone calling her a liar, it's harder than you think to get answers. That is until Cyril comes into her life. He has a crazy theory that she is either carrying the next Messiah or the next anti-Christ. From then on Tara's life is one fraught with danger, deception, betrayal and heartache. She needs to find answers before it's too late.

There is a lot to like about this book. It's fast paced, intense and an engaging read, but one thing that brought it from a 4 star down to a 3 star, for me anyway, was Cyril. I really enjoyed the way the story was going for the 2 of them until Cyril takes an about face and completely changes his personality in one night!! It was unreal and in my opinion, unnecessary. They were so good together and for him to treat Tara like that was horrible, and really soured my taste of him. I think I know why the author did what she did, but I still didn't like it!!

Anyway, with that being said, I still enjoyed this. It had a Da Vinci Code feel to it, in that it had so many conspiracies and beliefs in it. It's chock full of intrigue, mystery, suspense and twists. You can tell that the author did a lot of research and put a lot of effort into the idea of the book, because it shows. It's a well thought out and executed plot and will keep you turning the pages.

The characters aswell were well written. Poor Tara has so much to deal with, yet she stays true to herself and is firm about her virginity, despite so many people telling her differently. They tell her that it's impossible and she must of had sex, but she knows the truth and is adamant. I liked her strength of character, though thought she was a little naive at times, especially when it came to trusting.

In all this was a really good listen and I can't wait to see what happens next. The ending felt a little rushed and leaves us with a lot if unanswered questions but since book 2 is out already, I'm ok with that!! Lol.

Jewel Greenberg did a good job with the narration. She did great with Tara but didn't have enough of a different tone with some of the other characters. I also wanted her to be a little more intense with some scenes. It felt like she read the story great but didn't give much of a performance. She needed to give a little more.

*I received a copy of this in exchange for an honest review. All thoughts and opinions are my own.*

I hate to give this book only three stars, because I pretty much loved it. It was great until the "appearance" of Protennoia (about 77% into it); then it was good. But the ending... was absent. There was no closure, no climax, no wrapping anything up. I am guessing the author was going for it being open for interpretation, but it fell extremely short. I seriously felt like everything that happened in the entire book was pointless.

That said, it was written amazingly well. It is difficult to write such a controversial topic so unbiasedly, but that is exactly what Lilly did. There was enough research done and included to make it plausible, but not so much that you couldn't follow. I would love to read more by this author, but the ending has me re-thinking that. I hope she doesn't use this tactic in all of her books.

I found it fascinating to see how a story of immaculate conception might play out in todays society. There was a lot of research done into different religions, but the book is not preachy. It is an exciting thriller that challenges the patriarchal religions.

I liked and related to the main character. This is the first book in the series, so it left me with lots of questions and a desire to find out what happens next.

I listened to the audiobook edition which I received free in exchange for an honest review. The narrator spoke clearly and at a good pace. She performed great characterisations and accents. Jewel didn't pronounce the "g" on the end of any "ing" words, which bugged me a little, but didn't take away from the story. She used her voice well to enhance emotion and build tension and suspense.

Review is on the page. This book made me think. And I loved the feminist, pro-choice, patriarchy of religion, over and under tones. But it isn't specifically any one of those things. The author remained absent and allowed the characters choices to be their own. I tried to understand the controlling factor of main character Tara Spencer's family/friends and am glad that I don't have people like that in my life. This is a challenging book if you are set in your mind about religion. But if you just open your mind and think of the possibilities, then this book is a great one for a group of friends who can have a friendly discussion about religion, sex before marriage, a female Messiah. Really a great read.

I was really excited to read an antichrist story, some of my favorite stuff! But wow I HATED this book. Tara's parents are awful and act like their daughter having an abortion is the same as her committing suicide. None of the people in the book feel like realistic characters. If the author was trying to emulate Dan Brown, she did a great job with all the cardboard cutout people in this book. Also NOBODY cares to mention when a classmate CONFESSES TO RAPE on NATIONAL TV and NOBODY SAYS OR DOES A THING.

I can read a lot of crappy horror and enjoy it, but I will leave this series alone now, thanks.

This is a great, thought provoking book. I loved the strength of the female characters and the paranormal and thriller combination. The only reason I couldn't give it 5 stars is because I have a son and was bothered by the general negativity towards males. The main male character was a bit too weak-minded in my opinion and it bothered me. All-in-all a very fun, intense read with an interesting premise.

I loved the conflict(s) that the main character, Tara, experiences throughout the novel. She's got conflict on all sides. What a predicament to be put in! I found myself wanting to know what will happen next to poor Tara and then her not knowing whether or not she was carrying a child for the good of the world or for the destruction of it made it even more intriguing. This novel is truly unique and quite a read!

I tried so hard to finish this book but I just couldn't.

The premise sounded extremely promising. As many people have pointed out, it seemed like it would be a modern Rosemary's Baby. However, unlike Rosemary's Baby, this book was absolutely excruciating to get through. I could not bring myself to care what happened and I ended up throwing in the towel at 79%. I had really hoped the book would get better but unfortunately, it did nothing for me.

I really liked this book. while it had moments that I really questioned the sequence of events, overall it worked. I liked that the religious theme wasn't over the top so much that I couldn't follow. I'm looking forward to the next in the series.

Great intro to a new series

The Awakening is a well crafted story that delves into folklore, urban fantasy and religious doctrine.

This is a great intro to a "what if" on the Second Coming,

A definite title to add to a TBR list for all you fantasy lovers out there.

When Tara finds out she’s pregnant, her life turns upside down. She tells her boyfriend, and he freaks out and immediately breaks up with her. He’s positive Tara cheated on him!

The problem is Tara’s a virgin, and no one believes her. Not even her friends or her parents. She puts medical school on hold and tries to grapple with what’s happening to her.

When a mysterious stranger from a religious cult approaches Tara, he tells her he believes she’s a virgin. She’s uneasy with all the religion being thrown at her, but Cyrill seems sincere.

Tara takes a DNA test and discovers a shocking truth. Things get interesting when Cyrill tells Tara she will trigger an Apocalypse.

I started reading this book and could not put it down! The pacing is taunt and runs at a breakneck speed. Once Tara confirms her pregnancy, things move quickly. She maneuvers from one obstacle to the next, taking the reader along for the ride. Throughout the book, (and the series) it’s never clear who is really being honest, which really ramps up the suspense and the mystery.

There is quite a lot of religion in the book, which I thought was necessary for the plot to work.

The first book is free, and I guarantee you will be totally hooked on the characters by the time you finish book one.

Tara Spencer just learned that she’s going to have a baby, though she claims to never have had sex. Her parents want to have her committed to a psychiatric facility because now she’s been told by a man of a ‘Brotherhood’ that her conception was divine. With her boyfriend bailing on her, thinking she’s cheated, his sister being her best friend also thinking the same, who’s this girl to trust??

After various trips to this place and that, Tara realizes she’s kind of on her own. When those around her are dying behind her at every turn, she’s wishing that maybe she had only had sex, that way things may have been a little bit easier.

This first book in a series by Lisa Lilly, is pretty good. I read it in 2 days, unable to stop. I’d say that’s a pretty good book. It definitely held my interest, though I got a bit confused with all of the religious information and I’m a Christian. I still recommend this book.

This is an excerpt of the full review on camilleareads.wordpress.com

As a reader, I wanted to see the mother choosing her baby over the world. I wanted her to fight fiercely for her child while That would have been far more controversial than the idea of a female messiah. Give me a protagonist who would have used Cyril’s protection to her advantage, who would have rather let the apocalypse rain down than have her child on a dangerous quest, and a woman who would have felt guilt at it, who would have argued whether she was doing the right thing or not, whether she was religious or not.

I gave this book a 4 basically because I was able to finish it pretty quickly (3 days) and it held my interest from start to finish. Something that is hard for me with the majority of books I start. It was well written but I had a problem with the idea that in today's day and age Tera proving she was a virgin was so difficult for her. Any doctor could have provided proof and it should have definitely been obvious in one scene. The bomb also was never really explained. I am not sure if I am going to read the next book in this series though.

Not my typical genre. Thought I would step out and expand my horizons. A bit disappointed this wasn't quite as good as it sounded (which is sad because it really did sound like it could be a great book). There wasn't much character to the characters, the story kind of became well.....far fetched or at the very least it just fell flat. Not my taste, maybe I just didn't get it. I am glad it was a free book from Bookbub or Freebooksy.
