For the past eight years I haven't been living, just ... Existing.
The pain, the guilt, and the shame I carry have been locked away deep inside me for so long that it's impenetrable, until him. Until Connor Reeves.
With a sexy smile and seductive eyes, the bad boy rocker walked right into my life without warning, and now the walls I built that hid all of my grief for so long are now crumbling at my feet.
Now I am left wondering if it's possible that just as life can cause pain, it can also heal wounds in a heartbeat.
Liz King is a wife and nurse. In A Heartbeat was her debut novel. She lives in South Carolina with her family. Reading is a passion of hers, and writing is always something she wanted to do. Liz is addicted to gummy bears and coffee, even though her family and friends don’t think she needs caffeine to add to her already energetic personality. She’s obsessed with the 1980’s and loves to sing even though she can’t carry a tune. Liz loves college football and hiking in the Blue Ridge Mountains and the Great Smoky Mountains with her husband.
I absolutely LOVE when a book that I couldn't wait to be released turns out to be freaking AMAZING! Yes, this freshman novel from Liz King is a homerun! She hit every emotion I love to feel when reading a book! This book seriously had me ......
The first in the series In A Heartbeat introduces us to Lynae, affectionally referred to as Nae-Nae by her friends, and the hot bad ass rocker Connor! Everyone knows I'm a serious rock star romance junkie but don't let this book fool you! This isn't your typical follow a band, groupies, tours and party like a rock star book. No, this book is about two broken souls that connect at first glance.
Lynae has a secret she's kept to herself for 8 years. A secret which she felt she was to be blamed for and it kept her from living her life. She feels it was the only means to protect herself. What she has lived through was truly heartbreaking and the Prologue in In A Heartbeat doesn't hold back! We find out within minutes what happened to Lynae at the tender age of 14 and how that affected her until she meets Connor.
Connor, OH MAN! Ladies, I swooned over this boy! He has his own demons he fights. His own secret and own guilt he harbors. He blames himself for what happened and sadly he isn't the only one. Just one glance across a crowded bar before his band, Shameful Regret, takes the stage and his gorgeous green eyes connect with Lynae. That's all it took for him ladies. He know he NEEDED her. As he states in the book Lynae "grounds" him. He is an absolutely sweetheart but the pain he keeps inside is eating him alive. His only outlet is the wrong one and that comes with devastating consequences.
We get to experience the first connection between Connor & Lynae. Where she ends up.....
but that boy finds her again and he helps her LIVE. Secrets are shared but only by one party and the secrets the other party has can annihilate their relationship. Now I can't give you too much but I can say I you will definitely have times where you will just want to curl up in a ball and .....
there's a point in this book where the past for one of them comes back and you will so want to ....
this person! I think it was great how that played out because there needed to be a sense of closure for the character to move forward! When it comes to Lynae & Connor and this....
well let's just say it's HAWT! Also there's a little surprise that had me gasping and thinking ....
I got to the end of the book where demons come out and words were so carelessly thrown that I just had to ....
and then I kept saying.......
and after that I started my major.....
and at the very end I literally was ....
In A Heartbeat is total 5++++++ star read for me. The author did a FANTASTIC job with developing the characters as well as the secondary characters. We are introduced to Lynae's best friend, Sly (firefighter ladies ;)), Michelle & Gabbi. We also get to spend time with Lynae's father and their relationship is written so beautifully that you can't help but love him! Then we have the other "boys" in Shameful Regret ~ Wade, the naughty, perverted hottie that plays bass but really has a big heart, Sean, the fun loving, "look at my ass" drummer and finally Marcus the lead guitarist who is quiet and takes everything in (I fell in love with Marcus and then I wanted to kick him).
I felt the angst the characters felt. I laughed at the crazy antics of Wade & Seth. I cried at the pain that Lynae & Connor are living with. I seriously can not wait for the second book in the series. Make My Heart Beat is scheduled to release Spring 2014 ~ UGH well actually I can wait cause what is about to come out is going to be HUGE!
A phenomenal read that I will recommend to everyone! Yes there is a cliffhanger and I have to put this in cause I LOVE to be left hanging but I know a lot of you don't but believe me it really is worth the reading RIGHT NOW!
Liz King did a fantastic job with her debut novel, In a Heartbeat. It's an emotional, compelling, achingly real story. Connor is a deliciously hot hero - his patience and support of Lynae was endearing and rang so true. Lynae's history was handled with sensitivity. How she dealt with it and finally moved forward, with the help of her friends, Connor and her family, again, felt natural and real.
The final chapters broke my heart - hit me like a punch to the stomach - and gave a whole new meaning to the title. I CAN NOT WAIT for Book #2 to see how the events play out and are (hopefully) resolved.
In A Heartbeat was such a FABULOUS read, full of angst, great characters and some shocking revelations – And a big OMG Cliffhanger! It has been a few weeks since I read it, and I am still digesting what happened!
From the beginning I was pulled into the story by the very real portrayal of what happened to Lynea (the prologue) and the aftereffects that were so genuinely depicted. I loved the MC Lynea, she seemed like a real person to me and absolutely loved that Connor was an unsigned rocker. Liz King did a great job at keeping me engrossed in the plot; I didn’t want to put this book down! The story has a lot of dynamics that I have not seen explored in other books. Lynea has a big obstacle to get over in her life and her story will touch your heart. I found myself tearing up on more than one occasion. Plus, lots of angst in this love story - I loved the ride! Not to mention Connor is so so so so so so so so hot but also not perfect, I found myself loving and hating him, then loving him again! –Then the author leaves me in a Cliffy to top all cliffy’s, and I now I am dying to know what happens next! I am impatiently looking forward to the next by Liz King.
I just hated this book. Sorry, but true. All that lovey gooey stuff. Every one was like "Sweetness" or "hot stuff" It really got on my nerves. And every one was saying " Be careful for my baby girl, it doesn't matter that I'm smaller or whatever, I'll kick your ass and have your balls."
Yes, and she hated everything but also loved it. Yeah, well i only hated it.
In a Heartbeat is an amazing read. I felt every kiss and every tear. Connor Reeves hello dirty mouthy rocker! There wasn't a character in this book that I didn't love except Matt, you'll learn why when you read the book. You know I don't give any spoilers. This is one of those books that you can sit and read in one sitting because you can't put it down! This book pulled on all of my heartstrings and left me eagerly awaiting more from the guys of the band shameful regret.
Didn't grip me as much as I thought it would. A bit too predictable and the 180 character u-turns didn't work for me. Will maybe read more of their story in the sequel.
Lynae (Nae-Nae by her closest friends) went through a heartbreaking horrific ordeal at the ripe age of fourteen, which is pretty much divulged from page 1..She doesn't tell a soul..She seems to think what happened to her was all her fault, that is not the case..
Then we're brought up to date (8 years have gone by) Lynae is now 23 and is a registered nurse, she doesn't date and shy's away from any sort of social life..For the past eight years I haven't been living, just...Existing..But just as life can cause pain, it can also heal wounds in a heart beat..
It's Friday night so she's got an idea that her two friends are going to try and talk her into going out on the town dancing and a new band her friends want to go check out..Being in crowds or dark enclosed spaces tend to make her feel uncomfortable..Something she has never been able to get over..But just to keep her girls happy she agrees..
At the club she feels a buzz creep over her shoulders and opens her eyes, across the room her eyes lock onto a pair of green eyes that leave her feeling like they could burn a hole right into her, his eyes are piercing..
Her friend notices Mr Brooding staring our way, "Holy sex on a stick!! He is fucking gorgeous!! He is totally eye fucking you Nae-Nae!" "He's probably not even looking at me Lynae", says..
The stage is getting set up, her best friends are so excited to hear "Shameful Regret" play, they crowd round the nearest table, with drinks in hand waiting for the moment when the band come up on stage, Lynae just wants the night to be over so grabs her phone to send a text to her other best friend who is like a brother to her, she's so engrossed in her phone that she doesn't notice when "Shameful Regret" takes the stage..
The voice that comes over the speakers is deep and resonating and magnetic, it seems to pull her in, her heart beats hard and fast in her chest as her stare lands on no other than "Dark and Brooding" who captivated her earlier..
He's looking right at her with his lips seemingly caressing the microphone..His voice is amazing!!
"I'm Connor, Connor Reeves, thanks for coming out to see the band tonight."
This is where it all happens without divulging too much about the story, it's not smooth sailing but I will say that you'll have moments where you'll be swooning over Conner, he just seemed perfect for Lynae, he knew just what to say and when to keep his distance, it's a tough road he's going down to make Lynae trust and feel comfortable around him..And I will admit there were moments where I wanted to shake Lynae..
This book could've gone towards the dark side with what she had to endure but it was nicely written..Definitely will be keeping an eye out for book 2..
"Just as life can cause pain, it can also heal wounds in a heartbeat."
This was a debut novel by Liz King and it was a book full heart break and love. It was a book that completely drew me in and kept my attention but still left me with questions. Yes I warn there is a Cliffhanger that left me screaming freaking hell WHY!!!!!!!
“Meet Lynae Michaels, the sweetest thing in Charleston.”
Lynae was this super sweet young woman who you immediately feel for and you immediately break for you when you find out her heartbreaking secret. A secret she never shares with a single person. This secret showed a huge strength in her character. I loved watching her grow as a character and seeing her build this trust with the friends around her and slowly watching these walls fall as love came into her life.
"Oh! Sweet! Lord! It may be possible for someone to spontaneously combust. I feel like I could burst into flames at this very moment. I sit there gaping at him . I still haven’t uttered a single word."
Oh Connor holy HOT, Rocker Bad Boy with a deep secret of his own. A secret I wanted to know more than anything and to be honest I think that’s part of what made me keep turning the pages. Connor had the perfect combination of bad boy mixed with this sweetness. Connor immediately wants to protect Lynae and he doesn’t let her run from him. These two from the beginning were this couple you wanted to work. But in the same sense it was a little to insta-love, a little too fast and I wanted more build up.
“Lynae, I love you. I know we haven’t known each other very long, but I already know that I love you.”
In all this story line itself was good but at some points it seemed like it was moving at too slow of a pace and I felt like I could feel myself wanting to skim but I couldn’t because I wanted this love story that was developing and I wanted that DAMN secret.
I also have to add that what really kept me reading was the love I had for the secondary characters. Wade had me from the first time I met him and I found myself wanting just a book filled with him. He was the crude, flirty rockstar that I can’t help but fall for.
"Wade is obnoxious, crude and an impossible flirt."
And yes I LOVE him!!!
So this book ended with as I said HOLY HELL WHAT THE HELL CLIFFHANGER and now I sit here giving it stars but I still I have a need to have my hands on book 2.
So despite some slow points during the book I still thought this was a good read and would recommend to lovers of the NA genre.
* I received this book in exchange for my honest review**
This is actually a 4.5 star review!!!!
WOW! BONUS that the fact the author is my friend- and her fantastic first novel In a Heartbeat- is very heartwarming.
Lets start off like most books the Prologue- OMG heart breaking.. What a piece of shit! I wanted to scoop poor Lynae up and just tell her it was going to be okay... How dare Matt take away her innocents- take away something she didn't have a choice in giving!- With her secret stored away in her mind her heart no one knew- not even her mother- her bf Sly- no one...
Lynea is now an adult- living her life as a nurse- not letting 1 single person inside her pretty little mind- doing the right things- and only trusting on those that are close to her- this includes all men except her bf Sly- until one night her friends forced her to go out that one Friday and that's when she meets Conner the lead singer of Shameful Regret- she knew something about him was A++++ something about him that she didn't feel trapped!
Relationships grow stronger- for everyone- all people involved- the worse that could happen to Lynea does- but Connor and Sly help her achieve her self confidence back- comes to her defense and helps Lynea grow strong-
A very very wild twist in the end that takes you messaging Liz King and stating WTF when is the next book coming out!! I promise you will love this debut novel from Liz!!!!!
And P.s. thanks for the mention in the acknowledgments --- mwah girl!
After a tragic event in the early stages of her life we meet Lynae Michaels a registered nurse whose barely living til her co workers convinced her to go out with them to club metro. When the hot new band 'Shameful Regret' comes out on stage and Lynaes eyes are Immediately locked on the most mesmorizing green eyes that immediatly make her knees go weak.
Conner Reeves is the lead singer/ playboy of the Shameful Regret. Hes never seen with a girl more than twice. That is until he meets Lynae. one look into her eyes completely grounds him. Its then he knows he has to have her.
Both Conner and Lynae are haunted by their own demons that neither of them willingly wants to share with one another. But is keeping that secret worth risking their relationship??
Wow what a story!! 'In a heart beat' grips you tightly from the very first page. Although some parts of the story was easy to predict an Lynae & Conners wasnt as orginial as id perfer i still couldnt break myself away from this book!
Looking forward to book two Make My Heart Beat coming spring 2014
In A Heartbeat (Shameful Regret, #1) I read this author's book for the first time and enjoy it. Sweet young woman who lost her mother when she was child. And there is something event ,that changes her live forever untill she meet hottie rockstar. Loved all characters and epilogue shocked me. Overall , well-written,interesting,drama,emotional,shocked me,made me angry. Looking forward to reading Connors book. Thank you Liz King!
Loved this book. It's left me very emotional. I laughed, cried, swooned & at times were angry with both Connor & Lynae. Hot rockers are my favourite. The prologue did me in. This was a very intense read, but there are a few laughs with Lynae's best friends Michelle, Sly & Gabbi. Loved Connor's band mates to. Really need the next book soon. All in all an absolute fantastic read.......
The writing was repetitive and boring. The plot was cliche and has been played out a hundred times. The author did not do justice to the topic, nor did she give it a new spin or perspective. The h had mood swings and didn't act consistently skittish or confident. The H got really mad randomly and called the h 'sweetness.'
I honestly didn't like this book. It had potential but it didn't reach it. I absolutely hated how obsessive and possessive Connor was and how she immediately forgave him for everything. Uh hello that's textbook abuse.
***I was given an ARC from MDR in exchange for an honest review***
This is the first book in the Shameful Regret Series. Let me start off by telling you this book ROCKS!!! OMG... I was drawn in from page one. I just couldn’t stop reading it until I was finished.
This book really put me through the ringer. My emotions running high. I felt like I was on a roller coaster. My heart pounding wondering what was next, but I LOVED every freaking minute of it. I absolutely LOVE when a book pulls me in and holds me captive. In A Heartbeat is full of angst, and my heart broke on more then one occasion while reading it.
Lynae who is referred to as Nae-Nae by her close friends had an awful incident happen to her when she was only 14 years old. She keeps this tragic event a secret from everyone. She feels it was her fault and that no one would look at her the same. So Lynae spends the next eight years of her life closed off. Unable to get over what happened to her.
“For the past eight years I haven't been living, just...existing. But just as life can cause pain, it can also heal wounds in a heartbeat.” --Lynae
Then one night at a club she meets Connor, the lead singer of Shameful Regret. Holy moly I freaking LOVED Connor. These two have an instant connection to each other. Connor stirs up emotions in Lynae she didn’t realize she had. At first she tries to deny the connection with Connor. Then she realizes she can’t deny how she feels about him. Man, the chemistry these two had, talk about HOT!!! These two definitely sizzled up my Kindle.
“My heart is flutters in my chest. My palms start to sweat a little. What is wrong with me? I tear my gaze away from Mr. Brooding Stare to take in the rest of the band. I’ve not had a visceral reaction to a man like this before. It must be the alcohol. That and I’m probably just tired from a long week. My mind is forgetting that I don’t really want to be here and that I don’t have any interest in guys.” -- Lynae
Connor is fighting his own demons. My heart broke for him and what he went through. He is such a sweet caring man. Yet, this guilt he has is tearing him apart. Don’t get me started on his family, the way they treat him just pissed me off. We really don’t find out until the end what really happened to Connor to cause him so much guilt.
I A Heartbeat was a big 5 star read. Liz King gave us some AWESOME and INTERESTING characters. Besides Lynae and Connor , we meet Sly Lynae’s best friend from her hometown. I FREAKING LOVED him. He is just AWESOME!!! We also get to meet Lynae’s friends and co-workers Michelle and Gabbi. Those girls are AMAZING also. I loved the banter that Sly and Michelle had. They were like an old married couple. They had me cracking up. We also meet the rest of the Shameful Regret. Wade the bass player he is quite the PERV. Sean is the drummer and is obsessed with his ass he is such a character. Then there is Marcus, the lead guitarist. He is more quite then the other members of the group. I instantly liked him.
When you read In A Heartbeat make sure you have a box or two of Kleenex near by. Another warning there is a MAJOR cliffhanger. I am going to go crazy waiting to see what happens with Connor and Lynae’s relationship, and the little surprise these two are given.
Excerpt:
The DJ is playing some pretty good music to keep everyone entertained until Shameful Regret takes the stage. I can’t help but think that’s an interesting name for a band. There must be some reasoning behind it. The music that the DJ is playing has a nice beat to it, and I find myself closing my eyes letting the thumping take me away. I suddenly feel a buzz creep up my shoulders and open my eyes. Across the room I lock onto a pair of green eyes that feel like they could burn a hole right into me. This man is just standing there leaning against the amp set up on the stage. He has on dark rinse jeans that have a few holes in the legs, and a tight black t-shirt stretched across his broad chest. I can’t see much of his face because he has the hood of his jacket pulled up casting his features in a shadow, but his eyes are piercing.
I shake my head and turn back to Michelle. I can still feel his eyes on me, making my heart race as I tug on her arm. “Hey, lets go find Gabbi and sit down. These shoes are killing me, and I need a chair. See ya later, Trey.” I start to pull her away when she notices Mr. Brooding Stare looking our way, and she stops walking.
“Holy sex on a stick! He is fucking gorgeous!” Michelle says as she leans into my shoulder, then she adds, “He is totally eye fucking you Nae-Nae! You should go say hello!”
As I try to ignore the eyes I feel on me, I continue to drag Michelle along to find Gabbi. “Leave it alone Michelle, I’m not going over there. Besides, he’s probably not even looking at me. Just, come on.” I finally spot Gabbi at a table right by the dance floor to the right of the stage. She’s claimed our spot for the night. I’ll probably just stay at the table and let them go dance and jump around.
I first would like to preface this review by stating that the opening chapter of the book is written with an event of sexual assault , it is by no means written graphically crude or overly violent; however, for some, reading about these events can be an emotional trigger, especially when caught unaware, hence my caution.
Ok, now that we’ve dealt with the serious matters…on with the review. “In a Heartbeat” is the debut novel and the first book in the Shameful Regret Series by Liz King. Alright, I’m going to really open up to you guys here, when I first started reading “In a Heartbeat”, after the first couple of chapters I realized, I didn’t like it…whew, I’m glad I got that off my chest…I thought, “Ok, get through the book, give it a quick, vaguely neutral review, get to the next book”. So, I chart my course and push full speed ahead, but as I delve deeper into this amazing world created by Liz King, I find myself veering sharply, giddily off-course in pursuit of Lynae and Conner’s story. Lynae Michaels is a reserved young woman, seemingly unaware of her graceful beauty, who’s been living the last eight years with a soul fracturing inner shame. After high school graduation, Lynae Michaels flees her hometown and a dark secret, she attends college, focusing her education on a nursing career, while steadfastly avoiding any and all social situations. Lynae’s dedication pays off and she is now employed as a registered nurse in a cardiac procedure lab with her two closest friends, Michelle and Gabbi. Lynae also has another childhood friend, Sly, well, Sly is more like the big brother she never had. Michelle and Gabbi are constantly asking Lynae to go dancing with them to their favorite clubs, they want Lynae to get out and have some fun and start experiencing life as most twenty-three year old women do. But Lynae is still avoiding social settings, she doesn’t date and she doesn’t share her dark secret with anyone. Lynae knows that she can no longer put off Michelle and Gabbi and when they tempt her one morning with two of Lynae’s favorite things, coffee and gummy bears, Lynae finally surrenders to the awesome power of peer pressure, caffeine and a bear shaped sugar rush. When the ladies arrive at Club Metro, Michelle and Gabbi are doubly excited that in addition to Lynae finally accepting their offer to join them, a new band that Gabbi really loves, Shameful Regret, is playing at the club that night. Lynae’s anxiety and discomfort ratchet up shortly after entering Metro, and only increase when she locks onto a pair of intense green eyes staring at her from the stage across the club. Soon Lynae realizes that those sexy green eyes of Mr. Brooding Stare belong to Conner Reeves, the lead singer of Shameful Regret. Lynae literally runs into Conner after the band finishes their set and so begins the wild, passionate and sometimes heartbreaking journey of Lynae and Conner.
I thoroughly enjoyed the dynamic between all the characters, in terms of friendship, Liz King has held true the statement that quality over quantity should indeed by treasured. Lynae and Conner both had a very small group of friends, but the level of love, trust and loyalty was so evident, it is almost tangible. A phone call, with a simple plea of “I need you.” was all that was needed to drop everything, drive for hours to be there for the each other. And yes, I’ll admit I had to run for tissues more than once, shook my fist at Conner and Lynae, and it’s possible, even giggled once or twice before I had finished reading “In a Heartbeat”. If there was any change or editing that would or should be done, my only recommendation to Liz King, and this is nothing involving the storyline or dynamic of the book, just some minor spelling and grammatical errors, which can be corrected in editing, I just don’t want to see a wonderful take a turn at the “piñata” by the grammar and spelling police, you know they’re out there! Other than that, Liz King has done an outstanding job in developing the characters for “In a Heartbeat”, the realism and depth she attained for Lynae and Connor is truly amazing. For me, someone that, admittedly rushed to judgment a little too soon for this book, it speaks volumes that the author has me turn a complete one-eighty to not only sing the book’s praises, but eagerly await the second book in The Shameful Regret Series to discover what next awaits Lynae and Conner. Bravo Liz King, Bravo! ~Kathy
Liz, I need book 2 !!!!! That book was incredible!! I love Sly (who does not want a friend like that to sleep with when you feel lonely ?? ) hahaha Wade and Seth...i sooo like them. They are crazy, fun like little kids and with a good heart . Connor, hmm there were some scenes I wanted to be Lynae (you know what I mean, lol), sometimes I wanted to be there for him and hug him and give him my support. But, almost at the end I just wanted to kick his ass and slap him on the face!!!! grrr Girl, the end!! that end !!! all of my feelings crashed and exploted like a bomb!! I just want to tell everybody what happens at the end, but i know. ..no spoilers! ; 0)
EVERYBODY NEEDS TO READ THIS BOOK!!!! You are going to love it IN A HEARTBEAT ♥
I am reeling, I am mad, I am sad, I am happy, I cried even at one point. This book had me all over the place. Liz King's debut novel had me pondering and squealing.
We begin the book with a 14yr old Lynae who gets raped by her date. She becomes withdrawn and feels as though it was her fault. Which leads us up to now, a nurse that doesn't really go out much. Has a best friend named Sly, he would do anything for her. She also has her 2 girlfriends Gabbi and Michelle. Nae as they call her isn't very social so they keep trying to take her out to party to no avail until finally she reluctantly agrees, meeting Connor. Lead singer of Shameful Regret. He's a rocker, he's pierced with tatts. Typical bad boy. What neither of them saw coming is that they would fall in love with one another.
I liked the premise of the story. I enjoyed the banter between Sly and Nae. Nae and the band memebrs, Nae and her friends. I liked that Connor helped heal Lynae, that he brought her security. She was able to open up for the first time and let her walls down, accept her past and learn to move forward. I enjoyed that her friends were her supporters and there to help with anything they could. Sly is like the best guy friend ever and I would find myself smiling, he just seems like a great guy and the character was built up well.
I am honest and I have to be otherwise there is no point in being a reviewer right? Okay so the parts that had me cringing were the parts where hands were laid on lynae no, no he didn't beat her get that out of your head. Just drunk and holding on to tight, but for me red flags go up. I am a survivor of domestic abuse so this was how things slowly progressed, with him being drunk being a little too rough then apologizing profusely. I got that he had a rough past but I couldn't get past this. I just couldn't. Then towards the end scene, GAH! no, nope I was done. I couldn't see him past being an asshole. Apa or not I couldn't stop cringing and wanting to take her away form this douchenozzle. For me it hit hard. Way too hard, I couldn't see past it no matter how nice he seems. It seemed like the author wanted to make the male lead a broken character but for me, it's never ok, in real life or in fiction, for a man to put his hands on a woman. Even trying to hold her back, it's not okay. Or yelling and degrading a woman. I feel like the author could have made the character broken, but without holding her arm or yelling at her. He could have walked away and yelled to the sky. For me, it just brought up memories of what happened to me personally and I could no longer connect with the male lead and made me cringe for the protagonist.
I am tethering on the rating because I know the author didn't mean for the male lead to come off as he did, so I'm between 3.5 and 4 hearts.
Lynae went through a heartbreaking horrific ordeal at the ripe age of fourteen. She was raped by her boyfriend and she does not tell anyone. Those around her can tell something is off with her after the incident. She thinks what happened is her fault and no one will believe her giving the guy who did this is popular. She is a very strong character, all things considered.
After the prologue we catch up to present day, eight years later. Lynae is 23 and is a nurse. She doesn't date and has no social life, despite her friends Michelle and Gabbi's attempts.
For the past eight years I haven't been living, just...existing. But just as life can cause pain, it can also heal wounds in a heartbeat.
One Friday night she decides to tell her friends yes, and she ends up going to a bar to see a band, and there is a certain lead singer that will forever change her life. She feels a something come over her and looks over to see Connor Reeves, lead singer of Shameful Regret. Her friends notice him looking, but Lynae just shoots it down- like always.
"Holy sex on a stick!! He is F#### gorgeous!"
"He's probably not even looking at me."
She wants to leave, but before she does, she hears Connors voice.
Connor is associated with the bad boy image, simply because he is a lead singer in a band. However, he is the furthest thing from that and when he sees Lynae he just wants to take care of her. Connor can be hot headed but when it comes to Lynae he is an absolute sweet heart, and the true definition of an alpha male. Something about him draws Lynae in and she feels comfortable for the first time in her life.
The two have sort of a whirlwind romance- with Lynae going back and forth with her emotions, as well she should. I can't imagine how hard it is when you have been robbed of your innocence, and it's even harder to move on.
The author did an awesome job developing the main characters- as well as the secondary ones. We are introduced to Lynae's best friend, Sly, and of course her girlfriends, Michelle & Gabbi. She also gives us insight into the relationship between Lynae and her father, it is so poignant you can't help but love her more. Then there are the other men in Shameful Regret. Wade, the naughty, perverted one that plays bass but really has a big heart. Sean, the fun loving drummer and finally Marcus the lead guitarist who is quiet and takes everything in.
I really liked this book a lot, the only downside-it's a cliffhanger. If you can look past that, this was a fantastic debut novel from Liz King. Look out for book two!
This line sums up the book perfectly!! Lynae has been carrying around a secret for the past 8 years that has been holding her back from the world. She has her best friend in the world Sly who has been there through the loss of her mother and the growing pains that come in life but even he had no idea about her heart ache. Then a chance encounter at a night club with her 2 other friends she meets the lead singer of Shameful Regret Connor. To make her friends happy and because for the first time in 8 years she can stand the touch of a man she decides to dance with him but when her nightmare comes to the forefront of her mind she runs. Thinking she will never see the sex on a stick that is Connor again. But fate had other ideas that start a love story that will have you at times curled up in the fetal position bawling your eyes out and then the next fanning yourself and hoping your kindle doesn’t combust. Not only are Lynae and Connor totally lovable add in the other members of Shameful Regret and Lynae’s 2 girlfriends and you get a rollercoaster of a book. I love how Liz King(author) was able to bring the whole group into the story and have you falling in love with each one but still managing to keep the story between Lynae and Connor at the forefront. This book had me from the get go. I found myself crying along with them and laughing myself stupid at the banter between them all. And Connor good grief he is a tattooed, pierced rocker that as Lynae said “he’s not just sex on a stick…he’s sex on a telephone pole.” Even though you can feel the love he has for his friends and Lynae he carries around his own demons that cause a lot of friction in his life. We don’t learn much about it in this book but lord I love that man already and can’t wait to catch up with him and the rest of the gang in the next book. I would defiantly recommend this book and give it 5 heartbreaking stars outta 5!!
My 4 star review of In a Heartbeat Lynae went through a heartbreaking horrific ordeal at the ripe age of fourteen. She was rape by her boyfriend and she does not tell anyone. Those around her can tell something off with her after this. She thinks that what happened is her fault and no one will believe her giving the guys popular reputation. She is also a very strong character, even after her ordeal. After the prologue we catch up to present day, eight years later. Lynae is 23 and is a nurse. She doesn't date and has no social life, despite her friends Michelle and Gabbi’s attempts,
“For the past eight years I haven't been living, just...existing. But just as life can cause pain, it can also heal wounds in a heartbeat.”
One Friday night she decides to tell her friends yes, and she ends up going to a bar to see a band, and there is a certain lead singer that will forever change her life. She feels a something come over her and looks over to see Connor Reeves, lead singer of Shameful Regret. Her friends notice him looking, but Lynae just shoots it down- like always
"Holy sex on a stick!! He is F#### gorgeous!" “He's probably not even looking at me.”
She wants to leave, but before she does, she hears Connors voice.

This is a new adult contemporary romance. Book one in the Shameful Regret series, you most definitely have to read the second book. This is a fast paced book that touches your heart. You will feel every emotion with this book, from tears to happiness. I really felt Lynae's pain and then the security she felt with Sly, her best friend and then the love she developed for Connor. I also felt so much anger for Connor, even with his problems I still wanted to rip his head off. This is a great read that leaves you needing more.
This story is about Lynae a strong woman, that is holding in a painful secret. She is a devoted nurse whom finds peace when she is caring for her patients. She is not one to let people close to her, that was until she met Conner Reeves, a hot rocker that makes her feel emotions she hasn't felt for anyone else.
Lynae feels connected to Conner but finds he has a painful secret himself. Is this relationship going to heal her broken heart or bring her more strife, everything can change in a heartbeat.
My favorite passages:
"Hiya sweet cheeks." Sly answers on the first ring. "There is something smoothing to losing yourself in the lyrics of a song. I can listen to the same exact song on different days, and I can get a different meaning out of it depending on my mood." "Sweetness, you trying to get away from me? Come on, I don't bite." He pauses then adds, "Hard." "My heart seems to be coming alive for the first time in a very long time. Its time I let go of the past and move forward." "Excuse the a**hat (some might find the author's word choice offending.) he has no manners." "I do my inner happy dance. You know, the one that look like "The Carlton" from that show Will Smith was on years ago." "I have become the ultimate Daddy's girl. He spoils me rotten." "Tomorrow is the anniversary of Momma's death. Even though it's been several years, it doesn't get any easier."<3 "You are evil, Babe." "When he comes out, he yells out "I love you Nae-Nae!" "My heart feels like it beats just to know him." "I am broken. Please, make me whole again."
In A Heartbeat by Liz King was a disappointing read. The plot is clichéd and has been done so many times. Lynae Michaels was raped by her boyfriend when she was 14 (I don’t think it’s called spoiling when I talk about the prologue). She never told anyone and carried the guilt with her and never tried dating after that incident.
She meets Connor Reeves who is the lead singer of Shameful Regret in a club. It’s insta-love for both of them and it doesn't convince me a bit. I find Connor too pushy and that behavior puts me off immediately. He can be seen being pushy in the club and also while asking her on a date. If I were in such a situation, I would definitely push the guy away or if required may slap him. But how does the heroine react? She either blushes or nods. This makes me hate both of the MCs.
Connor’s band mates don’t make me like them as well. The only character who I may appreciate is “Sly” Sylvester who is Lynae’s best friend since she was young. I’m gracious the author didn’t make him as a previous lover of Lynae or as someone who loved her all along.
I have a question for those who are reading this. What kind of father laughs when a relatively unknown man who is not the boyfriend of his daughter slaps the daughter’s ass in front of him? My brain stopped there for a moment. The daughter I’m talking about here is Lynae and the unknown man who swats at her ass is Connor’s cousin who does in front of Lynae’s dad John, Connor and Sly.
I could never understand the relationship between Connor and Lynae. Whenever Connor yells or frightens Lynae in some way, I find her acting more apologetic than him. After yelling whatever he feels like, all Connor does is apologize and Lynae immediately takes him back. Any guy who drinks and screams under the influence is a danger. I don’t know how the author thinks Connor can be exempted from that.
On a more personal thought, what kind endearment is Sweetness? I get turned off anytime Connor calls Lynae that. Anyone else who felt the same?
Like I said earlier, the book was quite disappointing and made me rethink giving it a 3 star rating.
Ohh Yeah. Attention girls. Your gonna be addicted. Your gonna swoon. Your fall in love. We have a new band in the building. Shameful Regret.
The bend consist of a 4 sex on a stick band members.
Connor Reeves, the lead singer of the band. (DAMN!!! I love him!)
Wade, bassist of the band. (A really cocky one.)
Seth, drummer of the band. (The swoon one.)
Marcus, lead guitarist of the band. (The shy one.)
This is the story of nurse Lynae Michaels who had a really painful experience 8 years ago that left her with scars and a lead singer of a famous band Shameful Regret, Connor Reeves.
Lynae and Connor met one night at the club when the ban was performing.
The attraction between them is instant and mind blowing, raw.
She run away from him that night because she had a flashback from the past.
That didn´t stop him. He didn´t freak out. He went after her and didn´t stop until he got her.
He found a way through her walls. With time they started to crumble.
Connor is protective, possessive, lovable but at the same time jealous, insecure. He makes some bad decisions that will maybe cost him a lot. And one more thing, he still didn´t let her in full.
Their story isn´t a easy one. It´s raw. It has sadness in it. Some scenes and moments will break your heart and make you cry a river.
Every page brings something new and you just can´t wait to be on the next page to read what will happen next.
Book has a HUGE cliffanger. I need the next book to see the continuation of their story like yesterday because there are a lot of things to be resolved. Liz please hurry up and don´t make us wait too long for the Make My Heart Beat.
Addicted, amazing read that was so beautiful written. I highly recommend this book. I´m in love with every single bit of the book but especially I´m in love with Connor´s and Lynae´s love.
I really hope that all the band members get their books. And there is just one other person who deserves to have his book, Sly, Lynae´s best friend.
This debut novel which will have hooked from the first line…… Lynae is a strong, independent woman who is harbouring a dark painful secret ………she is surrounded by family and friends who all love her yet no one knows her secret. She focuses on her job as a nurse and shies away from social outings…….she isn’t living just existing but this is all about to change……… One Friday night, Lynae gives in to her friends and agrees to go out to see the up and coming band Shameful Regrets…… Conner is Shameful Regrets lead singer…..he is your typical HOT, SEXY, brooding rock star but behind his stage persona he carries the guilt of a dark painful family tragedy which he shamefully regrets. The moment Conner’s and Lynae’s eyes meet across a crowded bar…..you can feel the sexually chemistry………. Lynae literally falls at Conner’s Feet…….she tries to brush the instant attraction away…….. But from Conner’s persuading and her friends egging her on she agrees to one dance …….for the first time in many years Lynae feels instantly safe enclosed within his strong arms…….The beginning of a sweet romance………… Conner makes Lynae want to start living again and suddenly her life is a social whirlwind……..but nothing is as it seems and before she can truly living again…..she needs to let go of her painful past….. This book takes you a painful soul baring journey for both Lynae and Conner as they learning to let one another in and reveal their dark secrets……I loved this story and read it one sitting but OH MY GOD!!!!! The cliff hanging ending I didn’t see it coming….I need the second book like yesterday!!!!! As much as I enjoyed this story and loved Lynae and Conner and all of their supporting Characters: Sly, Michelle, Gabbi, Wade, Marcus and Seth. I found the sweet endearments and the rate their relationship developed a little too much making the story a little unbelievable but that’s my personal opinion ……..but I would still highly recommend this book to all romance junkies and cannot wait for the second book.

This a sweet, sad and sexy story about a girl who carries an awful secret around with her and the guy who walks into her with his own painful past.
Lynae and Connor were a sweet and fiery couple from the beginning. I loved that he was the classic bad boy rocker with piercings and tattoos but that he also had a very sweet side and was so protective of Lynae.
Lynae was a sweet young woman who I felt for immediately after reading what happened to her. The fact that she kept her heart-breaking secret for so many years without anyone to help her or lean on showed what a strong person she is. I was so glad when she finally told people and didn't have to carry that burden by herself anymore and that she knew none of it was her fault.
I also loved the secondary characters. My favourites were Sly because he literally was like her protective older brother and Wade because I loved how crude and flirty he was and then he would also be so sweet and caring when the situation required him to be.
The story line itself was good. At some points it seemed like it was moving at too slow of a pace and I felt like there wasn't enough happening but the romance between the characters was beautiful, I was dying to know Connors secret and I was so shocked when that awful guy showed up, so the plot defiantly kept me wanting to keep reading ahead.
I also couldn't believe the cliffhanger ending and can't wait to find out what happens next. How Connor and Lynae move forward and what the other characters think of what's happening. I also can't wait to hear from the other guys in the band as they defiantly added fun and laughter to this story.
So despite some slow points during the book I still thought this was a good read and would recommend to lovers of the NA genre.

I'm a bit torn as to how I feel about this book. It is definitely a good read as it is well written with likeable characters. Rather than the usual rock star romance, Ms. King has written a book in which one of the main characters, Connor, is in a rock band without making the book all about the rock and roll lifestyle. The story is more about Connor helping Lynae overcome something that happened eight years earlier - an incident which caused her to shut most people out. The fact that Connor is not perfect and, at times, far from it gave the book an interesting twist - just how interesting remains to be seen as I expect more will come to light in the sequel.
I believe what confuses my feelings about this book is Lynae's character. While I felt badly for her and what she endured, I didn't connect with her initially. Now as I write this review and ponder why it took so long for me to connect with a character that I ultimately liked, I realize that this may have been the author's intent. For Lynae to be closed down and effectively keep those around her held at bay, her emotions are held in check more often than not. When she did feel, most of what she was feeling was anxiety, which is not conducive to relationship building - even when that relationship is between the character and the reader. Whether intentional or not, I now think that I didn't connect with Lynae until she opened up and began to connect with Connor and guys in the band, and this makes for a brilliant display of writing skills.
In a Heartbeat is a really good read complete with great characters, hot sex, heartbreaking pasts, and one heck of a cliffhanger. Fortunately for me, I have the sequel cued up and ready to go.

This is Lynae and Connor's story. I gave this book 5 stars. This is book one in the Shameful Regret series.
Lynae has been hurt and left to put the pieces back together all on her own. A terrible thing happens to her when she is just 14 years old. She blames herself, and is shameful and thinks if she tells anyone that they will tell her what she already knows, it was her fault. 8 years later she is living her life the best way she knows how, she has best friends and a great job, but she hasn't dated in all these years. She doesn't think that she can. That is until she meets Connor and feels instantly safe with him. Like all the walls that she has up can come crumbling down. There is a bond between them, and the more time she spends with him the stronger the bond becomes. Can she finally let go and let the things of the past be the past? Can she trust Connor? And when her past comes back to collide with her present what will she do?
I really enjoyed this story. Connor was amazing. He was an instant balm to Lynae's heart, and she so desperately needed that. Sure she has her best friends, but even they don't know the things that have happened to her in her past. She has kept to herself for so long that when she does finally start to put her walls down. Connor is there to catch her. He is her lifeline. Her other half. This story shows you that even through life's obstacles you can find happiness, if you willing to just give it a try.
